Everyone is talking about the body language at the ABC News presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Michael gets some expertise from Joe Navarro, who literally wrote the book on the topic: "What Every Body Is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People." He is a former FBI counterintelligence officer and a recognized expert on nonverbal behavior, explains how to "speed-read" people: decode sentiments and behaviors, avoid hidden pitfalls, and look for deceptive behaviors. You'll also learn how your body language can influence what your boss, family, friends, and strangers think of you. Original air date 12 September 2024. The book was published in 2008.

Welcome back to another episode of the True Fiction Project Podcast! I was intrigued to speak with face reader and introverted extrovert, Brian Galke. Brian brings us along his journey from working behind the scenes in the helpdesk field to how he became a public speaker. He has perfected the art of reading faces, which has propelled him forward through connection and successful personal and business relationships. He discusses the facial features to look for when talking with someone to uncover the best way to interact with them. At the end of the episode, enjoy the short story, How to Human 101, by Parker James, where we follow an alien in a human body trying to learn the art of face reading. IN THIS EPISODE: [1:35] What is an introverted/extrovert? [2:55] Where and how did Brian pick up face-reading skills? [4:45] How did Brian move from the helpdesk to a public speaker? [7:29] How can Brian read someone's eyebrows when they change them (pluck, tattoo, etc.)? [9:13] Does the ability to read faces propel you forward in the potential of working successfully with someone? [10:56] What happens when facial features change? [14:20] Brian shows his experience working with people via face reading. [17:30] How do we focus on the next person when so many of us only want to focus on ourselves? [19:16] How is Brian teaching the millennial generation, who don't generally communicate face-to-face, to be comfortable in face-to-face situations? [24:02] The short story, How to Human 101, Written and Read by Parker James KEY TAKEAWAYS: Your face is constantly evolving. The left side is the personal side of your face; the right side is your external or professional side. As things in your life change, your facial features can naturally change. Face reading is all about letting people feel seen and heard. If you attempt to speak someone's language, you will be treated differently and build better relationships. Fiction Credits: Short story written and read by: Parker James BIO: As an Introverted/Extrovert, Brian purposely chose professions where people came to him for help (Retail, Hospitality, & Help Desk) to help ease his social anxiety. Over the course of his career, he realized he loved to learn new tips and tricks to better interact with people, and he always sought out the knowledge. With every new social skill, another promotion soon followed. He was onto something…maybe success starts with good communication skills. The #1 skill that changed his Personal & Professional life forever was learning Facial Feature Analysis. That skill alone led to Brian's growth from working the help desk to Regional Vice President of Sales, not too bad for someone who still considers himself to be a bit of an Introvert. Wanting to help people achieve that same level of success, Brian created Subtle Skills (subtleskills.com) and began speaking/teaching Facial Analysis around the world. Joining Dan Neumann today is one of his AgileThought colleagues, Quincy Jordan. Quincy is a Principal Transformation Consultant and has been with AgileThought for about one year now. Previous to that, he has served as a Principal Consultant and Agile Coach at SCRUMstudy.com for over six years. Quincy’s mission is to help companies and people who are ineffective in their own mission by assisting them in transforming from what they are to what they desire to be. In today’s episode, Quincy explains what exactly a community or practice is, what it can be used for, and why it can be so beneficial to an organization. He also gives his tips on how to effectively use a community of practice as well as how to get it started and incentivize others to show up. Key Takeaways What is a community of practice? A group or body of individuals that have a common interest or practice As a group, they come together to finetune their craft Can be formal or informal It is not mandatory and is open to anyone (you only need an interest to show up) What can communities of practice be used for? A mechanism for transformation within a company or organization Knowledge transfer across teams Improve and transform the culture Bring teams together and improve communication throughout an organization Quincy’s tips on how to effectively use a community of practice: Invite in guest speakers from another community of practice It will only be as effective as it is supported (a sponsor or team is key) How to get a community started and incentivize others to show up: Food — seriously! Led by a team (also known as “champions”); not an individual As a “champion,” you gain high visibility within the organization Be conscious of timing — make it convenient for people to show up Get a sponsor on board to help with some of the organizational hurdles Find a suitable location Establish a clear purpose (every time the community meets) Key Learnings: Lead your community of practice as a team; not an individual Use your community or practice as a mechanism for transformation Remember that it can only be as effective as it is supported, so be sure to find a sponsor and establish a core team of support Establish a clear purpose at the beginning of every “meeting” to keep the goal in mind Mentioned in this Episode: Quincy Jordan A Guide to the Scrum Body of Knowledge, by SCRUMstudy SCRUMstudy.com Quincy’s Recent LinkedIn Post Humble Inquiry: The Gentle Art of Asking Instead of Telling, by Edgar H. Cooper's Color Codes. This is a subject that the guys have been giving a lot of serious thought to since the talk with Mr. Aprill and they dive in and peel back the layers of what it means to each of them. Jordan is also freshly back from a tour of duty in Chiraq (Chicago, Illinois) and discusses how HE used situational awareness while traveling unarmed (because Chicago's government is coruppppppt) and how individual baselines affect a person's sensitivity to what is going on around them. Starting with the unusual work of analyzing potential jury pools in the 1980s, Dan also did some of the first PC based voter registration analytics in the Chicago area, including putting the first complete list of registered voters on a PC (as hard as that is to imagine today a 50-megabyte hard drive on DOS systems was staggering). Interested in almost anything new and technical, he worked at The Chicago Board of Trade. He taught himself BASIC to write algorithms while working as an Arbitrager in financial futures. After the military, Dan moved to San Francisco. He worked with several small companies and startups designing and implementing some of the first PC-based fax systems (who cares now!), enterprise accounting software, and early middleware connections using the early 3GL/4GL languages. Always perusing the technical edge cases, Dan worked for InfoBright, a Column store Database startup in the US and EMEA, at Lingotek, an In-Q-Tel funded company working in large data set translations and big data analytics companies like Datameer and his current position as a Chief Data Scientist for Open Source in the IBM Channels organization. Dan's current just for fun Project is working to create an app that will record and analyze bird songs and provide the user with information on the bird and the specifics of the current song.
