This week's episode of Lifelong Learner podcast we are joined by special guest Derrick McManus. Derrick is a former police officer from the South Australian Star Group Special Operations Division, shares his gripping experiences and lessons learned throughout his career. He recounts a harrowing incident where he was shot 14 times while on duty and the subsequent resilience he built during his recovery. The discussion delves into the importance of mental preparation, visualizing potential outcomes, and maintaining communication with loved ones, especially when facing high-risk situations. Derrick explains the demanding nature of his role within the Star Group, which involved high-risk arrests, hostage situations, counterterrorism, and close protection for VIPs, including the Queen. He reflects on how his early experiences, including a near-death encounter where his partner was nearly shot, shaped his approach to policing and life. Derrick emphasizes the significance of contingency planning and taking responsibility for one's choices, actions, and their consequences. The conversation also explores the concept of human durability, which Derrick now teaches through his Center of Human Durability. He discusses how mental and emotional resilience can be cultivated by preparing for adversity, controlling panic, and maintaining a problem-solving mindset during crises. Derrick also touches on the broader societal issue of avoiding responsibility, attributing it to the comfort and safety of first-world living, which often leads to complacency and a lack of accountability. Derrick's message focuses on going beyond mere resilience to achieve sustainable, optimal performance in the face of adversity. He encourages taking full responsibility for one's life, making conscious decisions, and considering the broader impact of choices on both personal and communal levels. This approach underscores the importance of mental toughness, proactive planning, and the ability to navigate life's challenges with a clear, focused mindset. Derrick's insights provide valuable lessons for anyone looking to improve their resilience and overall approach to personal and professional challenges. On today's Zero Limits Podcast we chat to former South Australian Special Tasks and Rescue Police Officer Derrick McManus shot 14 times during a high risk arrest warrant. For 11-years Derrick was a Police counter-terrorist operative (trained by military SAS), sniper and special ops diver with the elite Special Tasks And Rescue (STAR) Group. They were trained for the safe resolution of high-risk incidents. In an operation to arrest a high-risk offender, Derrick was shot 14 times with a Chinese military assault rifle. He was isolated from his team and bleeding from severed arteries in both forearms, massive torso injuries, two bullets in the left thigh, a bullet through the right Achilles tendon and more for three hours. After two-and-a-half years after the shooting, despite still carrying huge physical disablements, he returned to full duties with STAR Group. Let's GO!
In this episode, Rob speaks with Max Scott of Star Group Property. They discuss how to take a title and split it in a way that enables you to create several properties, which can then be sold separately for a higher profit. Scott also shares several lesser-known auction tips that are designed to help you to beat other bidders. They round up the episode by talking about some of the challenges property investors face. Max explains how he and the Star Property team have developed processes and created supporting businesses to overcome them. KEY TAKEAWAYS Title splitting is a bit like taking a multi-pack, opening it, then selling each unit individually. Splitting a title instantly adds value to the property you bought. Title splitting can also have tax advantages. It is rarely a good idea to buy at auction without having the money ready. Take your time when reading the legal pack. Putting in an offer pre-auction for an overpriced property is an effective strategy. Max explains how it works, in the podcast. Learn how to solve problems that scare other buyers off to secure bargains. Max provides examples. Being able to move fast gives you an edge. Honing your processes and employing the right professionals is essential. Don´t prevaricate. Be ready to try things. Max explains how to decide when to do this. Don't try to get rich quick, with property you have to take the long-term view. Understand the power of compounding. BEST MOMENTS ‘You can create an uplift of 10/15%, which is there straight away.' ‘At an auction, you are looking for anomalies that you know you can solve e.g., a tenant in arrears.' ‘We lose every day, and we win every day. But we win more than we lose.' ‘We only invest for cash flow.' Derrick McManus was shot 14-times in less than 5-seconds and lay on the ground for 3-hours before extraction. This is his story. Derrick was a South Australian Police officer for 42 years. 10 years with the STAR (Special Tasks and Rescue) Group and within this group he was a Sniper, Tactical-Diver and Counter-Terrorist operative. Trained in handling hostage/siege situations, high-risk arrests, cliff/cave/mine rescue, helicopter operations; as he puts it, all the interesting and exciting stuff (his mum sees it differently). Derrick finished his career teaching leadership at the Police Academy. As part of STAR Group – His team went to arrest an offender, who clearly did not want to be arrested, he started shooting and Derrick was in the line of fire. He was hit 14 times with a .308 calibre in less than 5 seconds. Sustaining massive injuries and lay on the ground for 3-hours before the rescue team and medical team risked their lives to get him out. 2.5 years of intensive rehabilitation and eventually returned to full duties with STAR Group. Derrick now speaks at conferences and facilitates Human Durability workshops internationally. His research includes collaborations with The University of South Australia School of Psychology and The Military and Emergency Services Health Australia. Derrick contributes was the power of thinking about returning home to his children that is one of the reasons he survived. humandurability.com.au Follow the podcast Onemomentpleasepodcast.com IG:@onemomentpleasepodcast FB: OneMomentPlease Donate: PayPal.Me/OneMomentPlease
“He was still standing in direct line of fire when he was risking his life to save mine. Bullets are whizzing around us, but he stabilised me in 10 minutes in the brick line of fire. And in the analysis afterwards, he says he doesn't know how my heart didn't stop. All the textbooks say it should have stopped. The only reason he believed that it didn't stop, was because I had never read those textbooks.” TIME STAMP SUMMARY01:43 Getting shot 14 times04:49 Human durability15:29 The 5-phase model on human durability19:01 Avoiding burnout Where to find Derrick McManus?LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrickmcmanus Website https://www.derrickmcmanus.com/ Who is Derrick McManus?Derrick McManus was a South Australian Police officer operating in the elite Special Tasks And Rescue (STAR) Group. He held specialist skills as a sniper, diver and was trained by the military elite Special Air Services Regiment (SAS) in counter-terrorist tactics. This is a physically, mentally and emotionally demanding environment. It is an extreme, potentially overwhelming, VUCA environment in every way. Derrick's team had been tasked to arrest a high-risk offender. He was obviously not very keen on being arrested. He fired 18 times in less than 5 seconds and hit Derrick 14 times. Derrick was then lying on the ground bleeding for 3 hours prior to his rescue. It was also anticipated that Derrick would suffer massive post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and be in psychological therapy for decades after such a massive traumatic event. Three months after the shooting, Derrick had a single appointment with the Director of the Adelaide Centre for Traumatic Stress Studies – an international expert in traumatic stress. Derrick defied all odds and amazed everyone when he was immediately psychologically cleared to go back to full duties with the elite STAR Group (obviously his physical injuries took much longer). Derrick had proactively prepared himself physically, mentally, AND emotionally for the challenges he could expect as a result of the choices he had made. He took responsibility for his actions and for all possible consequences. This format has been developed into the model for Human Durability and forms the basis of the philosophies within the Australian Centre for Human Durability. Derrick has been a speaker and trainer on the international speaking circuit for the past 20 years. He's presented to audiences of 7 people to 4000 people, 5-year-old students to staff/team leaders to executives/CEO's through to retirees. Derrick provides the insights and the tools to go beyond resilience to durability and create sustained optimum performance. He will show you how to create greater success for your people, leaders, and the organization.

Emotions can seem detrimental on our path to professional success, especially when decisions are driven by irrational responses. However there is a place for emotion in our professional lives and according to my guest this week, understanding this, helps improve human durability - or what is often referred to, as resilience.
