Ady Barkan was an American lawyer and a social justice activist. He was a powerful grassroots organizer who promoted policies that help America's workers and was a champion of healthcare for all. Ady was an especially vocal advocate for low-income, elderly and disabled populations. He ended up as a member of that last group after having been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in 2016. Sadly, Ady succumbed to the disease in November. But his life's work is memorialized in the documentary, "Not Going Quietly." And, Jacob has a special announcement! First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the FTC's case against Amazon, more Eric Adams drama, Trump's fraud case, the EPA, and the US economy, before discussing the Democratic fear-of-ceasefire when doing any messaging – and the importance of that starting to shift Jacob Silverman then joins, diving right into the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried, the former face of Crypto, beginning one year ago today with the leaking of an FTX balance sheet exposing the first strands of massive conspiracy and fraud between SBF's companies FTX and Alameda, leading up to this week's conviction of him and multiple co-conspirators. After walking through the economic exposé, Silverman parses through the uncovering of the farce of SBF's philosophy of “effective altruism,” and the expansive ties of FTX's funds, before wrapping up with why this disaster hasn't tainted the crypto industry as much as would be expected. Sam and Emma also look at the incredible cold-hearted coverage of Palestinians by the mainstream media, and touch on Ta-Nehisi Coates' comments on the hypocrisy of zionist “democracy.” And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Jewish Voice for Peace, the Philly Palestine Coalition, and If Not Now swarm Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, discuss the influence of the war on terror on Netanyahu's regime, and the potential economic influence of the Ben Gurion Canal on Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestine. We discuss the passing of healthcare activist Ady Barkan, who turned his fight against ALS into a crusade to break the monopoly power of the corporate insurance giants that are failing millions of Americans. We explain the importance of the introduction of the BadgerCare Public Option bill in the state legislature, and discuss our news conference at the Green Bay Labor Council with lead legislative author Representative Kristina Shelton. The bill is the only one dealing with the skyrocketing cost of health care in this Legislative Session, as the GOP continues to introduce culture war issues that do nothing to improve the lives of average Wisconsinites. In a related development, a new national report finds that nearly 7 in 10 U.S. adults say they receive medical bills they cannot afford and many are skipping needed medical care. The huge Brewers stadium subsidy bill is pulled from the floor, delaying action on the bill. What does it mean that even with a full court press by the unified corporate elite, Governor Evers, and Robin Vos, there are not enough votes in the Senate to pass it. While too many state politicians have been busy trying to ram through $546 million to a billionaire, the City of Waupun takes a rare step to invest public funds in child care after the GOP blocks all state action to address the access crisis. We close by reviewing news the Public Service Commission will be announcing electric rate increases this week, as We Energies says it will accelerate plans to stop burning coal and reaffirms an Oak Creek plant shutdown.

We spent most of the hour Tuesday with Health Insurance Industry Whistleblower Wendell Potter. That was after I recounted my troubles trying to get new insurance here in AZ to get me through the last two months of this year. I haven't yet told you of the horrors I experienced yesterday while looking for a plan for my final year before Medicare eligibility, and you should be happy about that. But today I toss all of that aside with the very sad news that Ady Barkan, advocate for Medicare for All, lost his battle with ALS and passed away last night. Though we all knew it was coming, that makes the devastating news no less awful. I'll pay a small tribute to the the man who was taken way too soon.As he does each Thursday, Howie Klein joins in at the bottom of the hour. Something happened yesterday in the House that I'm hoping Howie can clarify for us. A vote to remove that lying sack of shite George Santos from office came before the House in, I believe, a bipartisan motion. While most of his GOP colleagues voted to keep the lying liar in their ranks (not surprised), I was surprised that 31 Democrats voted with the Republicans and George the liar Santos remains firmly ensconced in his seat. Most of those 31 weren't a surprise, but one completely shocked me... Jamie Raskin?!?!?!I'll certainly ask Howie what that was about, and get the scoop on the new Magat Speaker of the House too.

Judy talks about what we should be focused on when it comes to disability awareness, and language related to disability, and how we should be thinking about inclusivity not just for students with disabilities, but for all marginalized groups. Finally, Diana and Judy have some fun with rapid fire questions at the end of the interview! *Chingona means "Badass" in Spanish Judith Heumann Bio & Website Links Mentioned or Related Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist Rolling Warrior: The Incredible, Sometimes Awkward, True Story of a Rebel Girl on Wheels Who Helped Spark a Revolution The Heumann Perspective Podcast Crip Camp Netflix Documentary Website Crip Camp Netflix Documentary Free on You Tube "Inspiration Porn" Defined by Stella Young TEDxTalk Judy's Interview with Ady Barkan and Nick Bruckman on The Heumann Perspective Ady Barkan, (Ady's "Be a Hero" campaign) Nick Bruckman "Not Going Quietly" Film Itzhak Perlman World Class Violinist Ali Stroker Actress Marlee Matlin Actress Stay Connected with Diana Diana's Website, including blog Free Resource - 5 Keys to Going Beyond Awareness Beyond Awareness: Bringing Disability into Diversity in K-12 Schools & Communities - Diana's Book Ed Roberts: Champion of Disability Rights - Diana's Children's Book Ed Roberts: Champion of Disability Rights Thematic Unit/ Disability History Lesson Plans "Beyond Awareness" Digital Course Diana's TEDx Talk Beyond Awareness Facebook Page Diana on Instagram Beyond Awareness Tote Bag Beyond Awareness Pullover Hoodie Beyond Awareness Raglan Baseball T-Shirt Beyond Awareness Journal/Notebook Diana's Teachers Pay Teachers Store - Disability as Diversity Diana's Brand New Resource! In 2016, just after the birth of his son, Ady Barkan was hit with a devastating blow: He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. As the medical bills began pouring in, Barkan was inspired to take action against what he says is a flawed health care system in the U.S. When his ALS progressed, leaving him paralyzed and unable to speak, Barkan used his ailing body as a weapon in the fight for health care rights, which is chronicled in the documentary “Not Going Quietly.” Host Giselle Fernandez revisits her conversation with Barkan, who knows his time is limited and wants to do everything he can to leave the world in a better place for his kids.

I lifted the title of the film we'll be discussing on today's show and used it as the title for this episode because it's a custom fit. The film "Not Going Quiety" tells Ady Barkan's story. If you were at all involved in the fight over the last 10+ years for Medicare For All, you likely know about Ady Barkan. Always a progressive activist and organizer, Ady was diagnosed with ALS. He continued his activism and organizing work, pushing for M4A. Director Nicholas Bruckman and Producer Amanda Roddy join me for the second half of today's show. The film premieres Monday 1/24 on PBS' "POV." You can also find other ways to listen at notgoingquietlyfilm.com. But we'll begin today's show with a trip in the Wayback Machine... back 12 years to the day. January 21, 2010, the Supreme Court ruled on Citizens United v. FEC, a case concerning the relationship between campaign finance and free speech. As you should know, it was a democracy-killing opinion that threw open the doors of dark money in campaigns. Then, later that afternoon came the news that Air America Radio had ceased operations. I'll play for you the beginning of the show I did that night... my first post-Air America show, and the beginning of the program I'm still hosting today!

His most recent film as editor is Not Going Quietly (Tribeca), about 32-year-old father, Ady Barkan, who after being diagnosed with ALS travels the country to fight for universal health care.Much of the drive to make This Might Hurt came from Kent's own struggle with debilitating arm pain as a 22-year-old. Unable to type on a computer or even turn a doorknob, he had to drop out of college. Although he saw several doctors and tried physical therapy, strength training, even narcotics—the pain grew steadily worse. The Damage Report with John Iadarola

Actor Chadwick Boseman has passed away at the age of 43 after a private battle with colon cancer. The President spent his weekend tweeting his support for Trump fans contributing to violence in Portland. Twitter has labeled a video tweeted out by House Minority Leader Steve Scalise as “manipulated media”. The video Scalise posted shows a conversation with Joe Biden and activist Ady Barkan, whose voice has been doctored to suggest Joe Biden supports defunding the police. One of Trump's top medical advisors is pushing a “herd immunity” strategy to combat the pandemic. The late Herman Cain's Twitter account has shared an article with disputed claims regarding the deadliness of coronavirus. An anti-masker at an Alaska Walmart threw a tantrum of biblical proportions. Sam and the MR crew break down the top stories of the past week including protests in Kenosha and Portland as well as the RNC as we hurdle into the homestretch of the 2020 presidential election. On today's show: Mark Meadows says Trump's America is peaceful. New Biden ad shows empty stadiums: "Trump put America on the sidelines...let's get back in the game." On the fun half: Pelosi says releasing Trump's tax return will be a 2021 priority and Richard Neal is the man to do it. Scalise explains why he posted edited Ady Barkan video, says passively it shouldn't have been edited but Biden wants to divert money from police anyway. Ron Johnson refuses to condemn Rittenhouse shooting during Kenosha protests. NYT media reporter Kevin Roose says Facebook is like a parallel news universe. Ben Shapiro says Democratic mayors let people burn their cities, without calling in National Guard vigilantes defending property take hold. Charlie Kirk says decent people rise up when protestors take over, says he's not advocating for vigilantism, but simply asking how do you get to vigilantism. RadioPublic|LibSyn|YouTube|Patreon|Square Cash (Share code: Send $5, get $5!) David Waldman returns to take us out of August and… OMG there’s still two months to go. Greg Dworkin returns for the first time since the Republican National Pageant of Knuckleheads, which no one watched anyhow. This might have been intentional, as contradictory messages could then be repackaged and disseminated to their intended microtargets later… yeah, like they thought that out. As roller coasters go, 2020 polling is kind of tranquil, almost soothing. Is 6 points too close for comfort? Nate Cohn might need about mid-November or so to give us solid numbers. Still, wherever there is a bellwether, there’s Joe Leading in it. Joe Biden’s voters may not be asking for much, but Joe is showing he can deliver that and even more. The former Chief of Staff to Senator Olympia Snowe was concerned about Susan Collins, but no more. Who trusts Jared Kushner? Definitely not Don McGahn. Donald Trump is a lying prick. It is his brand, and Trump is devoted to his brand. Will Trump’s conveniently timed COVID-19 vaccine be on brand? Herd immunity is even more on brand: you do it yourself, and you pay for it. Anyhow, the late Herman Cain says it’s not as bad as it seems. Robert Trump might also attest to that, but of course he also might have been paid off. Trump tried to register to vote in Florida using an out-of-state address. Why would Donald do such a stupid thing? Well, he wouldn’t, Trump hires lawyers to do his stupid things. Steve Scalise literally put words into the mouth of disabled Progressive activist Ady Barkan. Soon, there will be Cameo for journalists, where 50 bucks will get you a juicy tidbit they haven’t yet mentioned to their editor. But for now you still need to wait for their book to come out. The DOJ secretly curtailed FBI investigation of Trump ties to Russia. It must have been a well-kept secret as dozens of FBI agents were standing right there. Rod Rosenstein lands a job with the Other Side. Even Republicans think Qanon are screwballs… but of course they thought that about Donald Trump a few years ago. Attorney and activist Ady Barkan was diagnosed two years ago with ALS, at the age of 31. Ady has channeled his illness into some remarkable activism on health care, but also on progressive issues across the board, from tax reform to helping elect progressive candidates across the country. Ady famously confronted conservative GOP Senator Jeff Flake about his vote on Trump's tax bill on an airplane last year, in a video that quickly went viral and, for a lot of us, was our first introduction to Ady and his activism. Cliff and I caught up with Ady in the middle of his cross-country "Be a Hero" tour, which you can find more information about here: https://www.beaherofund.com/ Here's a snippet of what Ady said when I asked him why people should get involved in politics: "There are two great reasons to pour your heart and soul into this election. One, our democracy depends on it. The second reason is the one I hope rings most true with people. The struggle and participation in collective action and political engagement is an incredibly rewarding and energizing and liberating experience. And it's the answer to your question about how do I keep doing it in the face of this terrible disease. Being with other people, meeting other activists, being inspired by their stories and their vision and the courage of people around the country, and knowing that I'm in common struggle with them gives me tremendous energy and hope and inspiration and power. I do have hope for the future, even in this dark hour." It's a great and inspiring interview that I think you'll enjoy. This is a 5 minute snippet of the entire 68-minute podcast. Today we’re talking health care, taxes, and activism with Ady Barkan.  Like me, you probably first became aware of Ady when a video of him confronting Jeff Flake went viral.  But that wasn’t Ady’s first stab at activism – far from it in fact. A graduate of Columbia and of Yale Law, he could have done anything he wanted. He could have made a whole bunch of money right out of school, but instead, he started representing low-wage workers in New York City in pursuit of everything from paid sick days to the unionization of the car wash industry.  Today, Ady is a Director at the Center for Popular Democracy, where he runs Local Progress and the Fed Up campaign.  Eighteen months ago, at the age of 33, Ady and his wife Rachel welcomed a son, Carl, and shortly thereafter, Ady was diagnosed with ALS – a terminal illness that paralyzes its victims over time. In a very short period of time, he’s gone from being an active runner and hiker to being in a wheelchair, unable to pick up his son. It’s a cruel and inexplicably random affliction, and after talking to Ady, I found myself in awe of his resilience and thankful for the way he’s continued to dedicate his life to fighting for what’s right.  Important Links: @AdyBarkan http://populardemocracy.org/ @Majority54 @JasonKander hellomajority54@gmail.com
