Never one to shy away from controversial topics, Joyce Carol Oates' “The Sacrifice” is based on the story of Tawana Brawley of upstate New York who made headlines in the late 1980s with allegations of kidnapping and rape that were later proven false. When we spoke about this book in 2015, JCO was already the author of more than 100 books—novels, short story collections, a memoir, children's books, poetry, plays, even a libretto for an opera. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/booktalk-diana-korte/message

This week we look at two Law and Order episodes loosely based on the real 1987 case of Tawana Brawley. The first is from the original series Law and Order s1e11 Out of the Half Light, the second is from SVU s15e18 Criminal Stories. Joined by Donald Chang (Asian AF) we discuss the difference in how sexual assault and rape were treated by the police in 1990 and in 2015, how the original series cops spend more time fighting a civil rights leader than investigating the case, and how Olivia Benson tries to make up for past mistakes. Enjoy.
The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. This weekly broadcast examines current events from across the globe to learn what's happening in all areas of people activity. We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS Spring 2023 took a somber turn as both Alton Maddox and Harry Belafonte passed away this week. Maddox was a stalwart attorney who won exoneration for his client in the Central Park 5 case but remains most known for his work on the Tawana Brawley rape case. Whites stripped his ability to practice law. The great Harry Belafonte was a lifelong friend of Coretta Scott King, was in attendance for the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and used his immense stardom to counter-racism as best he could. Maddox died at the age of 77. Belafonte made it to the age of 96. We also discuss the legalization of recreational cannabis in Minnesota. This marks the 22nd US state to approve the green stuff. We also recognize the death of Carolyn Bryant Donham at age 88. She was never charged for the death of Emmett Louis Till in 1955. #TawanaDidntLie INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE 564943##TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Reverend Al Sharpton speaks to Margaret Hoover about his evolution as a civil rights leader from the 1980s to today, which is chronicled in the new documentary “Loudmouth.” Sharpton discusses his influences and why he developed his loud and dramatic style of activism to attract attention in New York. He also reflects on how Coretta Scott King ultimately convinced him to soften his rhetoric in order to stay true to his mission. Thirty-five years later, Sharpton defends his advocacy for Tawana Brawley–a Black teen who claimed she was abducted and raped by white men in 1987–and explains why he still will not apologize for standing by Brawley, even after a grand jury deemed her accusations a hoax. Sharpton assesses the Democratic Party's current challenges with Black voters and offers his perspective on President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. He also looks ahead to the future of the civil rights movement. Support for “Firing Line for Margaret Hoover” is provided by Robert Granieri, Charles R. On July 13, 1869, historian James McSherry, of Frederick, died. He wrote the first History of Maryland, published in 1848. On July 13, 1944, Dr. Albert L. Pearre, who began working as a pharmacist on South Market Street in 1884, died at the home of his son, Dr. A. Austin Pearre, at 304 Upper College Terrace, at the age of 78. He was the son of James W. and Marian Lindsay Pearre. Today in 1865, Horace Greeley advised his readers to "Go west, young man.” While the phrase often is credited to Greeley, in regards to America's expansion westward (and was related to the then-popular concept of Manifest Destiny), it was actually first stated by John Babsone Lane Soule in an 1851 editorial in the “Terre Haute Express.” Greeley favored westward expansion of the nation as he saw the fertile farmland in the region as an ideal place for people willing to work hard for the opportunity to succeed. The phrase came to symbolize the idea that agriculture could solve many of the nation's problems of poverty and unemployment characteristic of the big cities of the East. It is one of the most commonly quoted sayings from the nineteenth century and may have had some influence on the course of American history. Today in 1960, Senator John Kennedy of Massachusetts was nominated for President at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Today in 1967, race riots broke out in Newark, New Jersey. By the time the violence ended on July 17th, 27 people had been killed. Today in 1977, a power blackout hit the New York City area after lightning struck upstate power lines. The city went without electricity for over 25 hours. Today in 1985, Arthur Ashe became the first African-American to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Today in 1994, Jeff Gillooly, Tonya Harding's ex-husband, was sentenced in Portland, Oregon to two years in prison for his role in the attack on Nancy Kerrigan. Today in 1998, a jury in Poughkeepsie, New York, ruled that the Reverend Al Sharpton and two others had defamed a former prosecutor in a highly-charged case by accusing him of raping Tawana Brawley. Today in 2015, Sandra Bland was found dead in Waller County jail, Texas after spending weekend in jail after a traffic offence. Her family disputed her supposed suicide. While a grand jury declined to indict the county sheriff or the jail staff for a felony relating to Bland's death, arresting state trooper Brian Encinia was indicted for perjury for making false statements about the circumstances surrounding Bland's arrest in January 2016. He was later fired. Then in September 2016, Bland's mother settled a wrongful death lawsuit against the county jail and police department for $1.9-million and some procedural changes. The perjury charge against Encinia has since been dropped in return for his agreement to end his law enforcement career. Today in 2108, Johnson & Johnson ordered to pay record $4.7 billion in damages in talc cancer case by jury in US state of Missouri. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Al Sharpton (AKA The black man's pimp) Calls For A 'Season of Disobedience,' But Is That Helpful For America? Why is it that a Democrat who was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. presidential election with previous ethics violations continues to cause conflict in America? April 23, 2009 - Is fined $285,000 by the FEC, alleging he received hundreds of thousands of dollars in private funds. It is later found that his National Action Network gave hundreds of thousands of dollars towards his campaign that should have been covered by his election committee. June 4, 2020 - Sharpton announces that he's organizing a March on Washington in late August to mark the 57th anniversary of the historic demonstration for civil rights as protests over the death of George Floyd sweep the nation. Sharpton says the event will be led by the families of black people who have died at the hands of police officers, including Floyd's family. The problem for Democrats is that Al Sharpton is, as Mr. Trump put it on Twitter, “a con man.” And not just a con man: Mr. Sharpton is an ambulance-chasing, anti-Semitic, anti-white race hustler. His history of offensive statements is longer than the current American presidents. And Mr. Sharpton's worst sin — his blatant incitement to violence during the Crown Heights riots of 1991 — leaves no doubt that he is not a leader, as New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio described him, who has spent his years “pushing for justice in the teachings of Dr. King.” Sharpton became embroiled in the Tawana Brawley case — a case that would haunt him for years. Brawley, an African American teenager, claimed that she was raped by a group of white men — some of whom were allegedly police officers. The case was later dismissed by a grand jury, which reportedly concluded that the teenager had made up the story. But this came after months of media frenzy around the case, largely encouraged by Sharpton. He was even sued by the district attorney working the case for making slanderous remarks. Sharpton was found guilty and fined for his comments. This is a quote: I was fed up, and this is when I shouted at Kimber, "How dare you come here and ask the people for money!" Charging toward the front, I saw Sharpton jump up and take to the podium — the head-to-head exchange began. Counting $100 dollar bills one at a time totaling $1,000, Sharpton challenged me to put my money where my mouth was. "I was once a street preacher like you," he said. "Put up or shut up!" Whatever the original purpose for the money, Sharpton changed gears and told a startled audience that the money raised would be used to build a memorial for those who were slain. I called Kimber and Sharpton a pimp several times. Sharpton is a symbol of a systemic problem within the inner-city church leadership in the North End of Hartford. We don't need a memorial with the deceased victims' names etched in stone — another grave marker. The pain from the families who lost loved ones due to gun violence cannot be replaced by a statue of wasted dollars. Marcus Mosiah Jarvis is pastor at Christ the Cornerstone Praise and Worship Tabernacle in Hartford How is it that such people rise to the top of the food chain in the leadership ranks of the Democrat Party? Isn't inciting a riot a crime? We know a season is 90-days, or three months, but do we really need over 3-months of protests in America, isn't the American Psyche getting protest fatigue? Is this all the left-side of the political spectrum has anymore? Jeremiah Wright-Al Sharpton these alleged men of God is not teaching and preaching the word of God they are teaching and preaching the word of men hate and racism. Besides Al Sharpton other democrat troublemakers are calling for protests, riots, and even hinting at the need for a Civil War. In fact, Michael Moore is promoting the concept of "100-days of resistance, starting with Donald Trump's inauguration," while giving an interview for Salon (dot) com. Didn't we just get over the BLM - Black Lives Matter protests and riots partially paid for by political operative Billionaire George Soros? Do we really need any more civil unrest in America? The Salon story stated, "He [Michael Moore] will start by attending the women's march, which he described as a 'bold message' to remind the president-elect that women's rights are human rights." Wait, am I missing something here? Wasn't it Barack Obama who bowed to the King of Saud in Saudi Arabia and gave a speech in Cairo, for which he received a Nobel Peace Prize, about what a great way of life Islam is, a culture that puts women in the back seat, unless there are land minds and then they walk in front of the men. The left suddenly, and in their infinite hypocrisy, finds a soft spot in their hearts for women? And, yes, their candidate was defeated, not because she was a woman, rather due to personal character flaws which have followed her, her entire life. The right doesn't have anything against women, the right has something against lies, hypocrisy, fake economic numbers, political correctness, and the disruptors of society busy looting, rioting, and burning out store fronts. Look, here is the thing, we are finally retiring a Community Protest Organizer turn President yes Barack Obama, who sent race-relations in America back 40-years and we hardly need any more of this nonsense. The left lost this election, not due to the Russians hacking the DNC revealing their true colors, but because the left, had left the middle class high-and-dry with bad policies one-after-another. Wasn't its Obama himself that told the American People, "elections have consequences" as he rammed his socialist policies down our throats? Now that the left didn't get their way - they want to riot and protest? Using the death of George Floyd as a platform to brew hate shame on you Al Sharpton and shame on you Democrats. I guess we are in half during a pandemic, so these paid protesters can riot. Covid-19 do not seem as important now. One of Donald Trump's campaign promises was that he was going to bring "Law and order back to America" and in part, the Trump Campaign won on that message, yet the left wants to continue this misbehavior, protests and criminal behavior - and yes, it is a Class-C Felony to incite a riot. When will the left stop acting out and start acting like adults? Think on this, and as always Be Great, Be Strong in your faith: Trust In GOD, Don't Hesitate!

Renegade Welomes Bill Deane from Our Missing News http://www.ourmissingnews.com. Renegade Nation it's getting even more crazy everyday. Alex Rodriguez's two-front conflict with Major League Baseball and the Yankees reaches its height today in what promises to be one of the most historic and bizarre days the game has ever seen. This afternoon, commissioner Bud Selig is expected to suspend A-Rod through the end of the 2014 season, a ban that would cost Rodriguez 214 games and about $34 million, for his alleged involvement in the now-shuttered Biogenesis anti-aging clinic in South Florida, an industry source told The Post. And shortly after 8 o’clock tonight, weather permitting and assuming he appeals the suspension, A-Rod is expected to make his 2013 debut for the Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field. A quarter-century after her name made national headlines and became infamous, Tawana Brawley is finally paying for making a false rape charge against a former New York prosecutor.Paying $627 per month, to be exact. The New York Post reports that last week a judge in Virginia, where Brawley now lives under various assumed names and works as a nurse, ordered $3,764.61 garnished from six months' worth of Brawley's wages and paid to Steven Pagones. I'm trying to control myself like a good journalist should, but this is a very clear example of how the rich keep getting richer. Nothing stops them not even a bankrupt city. It's just like the unnecessary Iraq war, ostensibly to save the good Iraqi people from their dictator Saddam Hussein and protect us from a nuclear holocaust by a country that didn't have a nuclear bomb and no ICBMs to get it here. Yes, it's true, he is out," says his Russian lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena. The ex-U.S intelligence contractor left his neutral area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, into Russian territory after a month of waiting in limbo. He left the airport unaccompanied after being given a year of freedom to travel anywhere within the borders of Russia. Enjoy Renegade Nation and Pass the show Around Richie Marla and Bill
