Unusual Histories
Modern London History – How Architecture, Layout and Demographics Have Shaped the City with Cathi Haragaden

Unusual Histories

In this episode of his Unusual Histories Podcast, Danny Hurst changes things up a bit by talking to experts and residents of London. This time he speaks to Cathi Haragaden, a global citizen, holistic health and well-being consultant, director of Healthy Spaces Limited and Feng Shui consultant. Today, she and Danny discuss the role history, architecture, Feng Shui principles, evolving population demographics have on an area. They do this using Notting Hill, Portobello Road and Thamesmead, where Cathi has lived, as examples. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS · Notting Hill has always been home to an eclectic mix of people from different classes and countries. · Even before the Roger Miller film made the area famous, it had a unique vibe. · Despite the prevalence of racism in the UK, at certain stages, the community spirit of Notting Hill has remained strong and giving. · Thamesmead was built on an old chemical works, and a lot of its residents looked ill. · The stark concrete buildings of Thamesmead significantly impacted how the place felt, which in turn influenced the people who lived there. · For thousands of years Feng Shui has been used in architecture as a way to channel energy to one place in a city. Examples can be found throughout the world. · The space we live in is to some extent a reflection of who we are. But it also influences who we become, so making changes to your home´s look and layout will have a significant impact on you. BEST MOMENTS “The energy of the cultural difference basically allowed the Portobello Road and beyond it to have a different energetic match.” “I've lived all over the world, and one of the best places I've lived was Notting Hill.” “I could see there were good intentions there to cater for overspill from London ... but it was made with concrete.” (Thamesmead) EPISODE RESOURCES Feng Shui Mastery Show - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/feng-shui-mastery-show-with-cathi-hargaden/id858155885 https://www.fengshuimasteryshow.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/cathi-hargaden-064ba7151 Wall Street - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094291 Film – Notting Hill - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0125439/ HOST BIO Historian, performer and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Gallery No32 (@gallery_no.32)Taking inspiration from our grassroots, DIY heritage, 2025's PARK is a space for experimentation. This year, we're not only encouraging fully formed applications, but also ideas, WIPs and sculptural question marks so that together, we can build our 4th and most exciting sculpture park to date. We have a new venue! We are re-opening Thamesview Golf Course in Thamesmead, South East London for the return of the PARK. The site has been closed to the public for over a decade and we're excited to be reactivating this amazing space with art, culture and exploration. Everyone can apply. We encourage applications from artists at all stages of their creative career. No fees. Winter Sculpture Park remains free to view, free to show. This year our open call welcomes all forms of sculpture, public art, participatory art, land art and architecture. We are also inviting applications for workshops and creative activities.DEADLINE: Sunday 29th September 2024. Thamesview Golf Centre has been out of use for over a decade, leaving the attached green spaces fenced off and inaccessible to the public. The site hosts a neglected two story clubhouse with rooftop viewing platforms, a paved forecourt and two large fields separated by chain link fencing. Developing ideas for Winter Sculpture Park submissions requires a consideration of the land for installation and durability. The No.32 team is here to support your plans with this! Welcome to the Creative Blood Experience. One culture-defining creative guest… One passionate host… And a deck of fifty question cards designed to yield incredible creative tips, real life experiences and untold stories from the artists working across the creative industries today!Shantell Martin is not your average artist. She's also a public speaker, cultural facilitator, curator, choreographer, songwriter, performer and mentor. And it's this all-embracing, boundary-blurring approach to creativity and artmaking that forms the basis of this episode.“For those of us who didn't grow up going to museums and galleries, the art around us is what people are wearing. For us, the museum is the postcard on your fridge, it's the t-shirt you're wearing, it's the sneakers you're wearing”.Originally from Thamesmead in South East London – the iconic brutalist housing estate where A Clockwork Orange was famously filmed – and now based in LA, Shantell is known for her signature, stream-of-consciousness line drawings, murals and ‘who are you?' slogan. Her kaleidoscopic CV has seen her collaborate with brands including Max Mara, The North Face, Tiffany and Co., as well as institutions MIT, The Whitney and Boston Ballet (where she also choreographed) and establish her own podcast series What's the Point? She even has her own open source font ‘Shantell Sans'! And that, if you can believe it, that's just for starters!Having navigated her way through the murky waters of the ‘art' world and got to a place where she now has the creative freedom to explore, in this episode she generously and candidly shares her experiences, learnings and insights picked up along the way. From why every artist needs a cocktail of skills, to what feedback to ignore, Shantell shines a light on the practical, proactive mindset needed to thrive within an opaque system.Follow Shantell @shantell_martin EPISODE INSIGHTSWhat you don't get told about the artists who've “made it” (and the hustling involved)Why you need to trust in your own visionThe value of peer support, mentorship, patronage and anyone fighting your cornerWhy art can exist everywhere, beyond the museum walls and traditional spacesThoughts on the episode? Episode 3 of ASSET ARREST's mini-series on culture-led housing looks at Bow Arts in London and their provision of 'affordable' housing for artists, which operates to a property-guardianship framework. I speak to artist Rab Harling (aka Balfron Social Club), an ex-resident of the flats they managed between 2007-14 at the iconic Balfron Tower - a brutalist tower block designed by Erno Goldfinger - in Poplar. He talks about his experience there and his ongoing fight against the artwashing and social cleansing that took place. A typical London home now costs nearly ten times the average local income, as surging house prices reduce affordability to the lowest level on record. It comes as the latest figures from Nationwide Building Society show the capital's house price growth has slowed from 7.4 per cent to 6 per cent. But with hybrid working and the Covid-era race-for-space still driving many people's property decisions, is it still possible to bag a relative bargain well inside the Zones?Research from Savills estate agents shows a typical flat in Zone 4 costs over £610,000 but in Zone 2, an equivalent home costs about £364,000.In New Cross, also in Zone 2, one of the best value deals is a flat for about £324,000, and Peckham is reportedly best value for terraced house at about £590,000.But go a little further out to Zone 3 and to East Ham for flat at around £238,000, while in Zone 4's Ilford, the savviest buyers can find an apartment for about £177,000 and a Thamesmead terraced house for around £337,000.We discover more about the new factors driving property price growth, whether it's sustainable and why the Elizabeth Line could be a game-changer for home prices. There's also analysis of the latest plans to try and tackle London's cladding scandal affecting flats and why the rental market is red hot again with sealed bids after pandemic restrictions were lifted. To examine the latest data, The Leader's joined by Evening Standard business editor Jonathan Prynn and Homes & Property editor Prudence Ivey. In the Grimshaw Podcast Cities series we have interviewed city-shapers of all kind: architects and urban designers, transport specialists, cultural entrepreneurs, developers, and city leaders. Our series ends the year with that cornerstone of urban development – masterplanning. And who better to discuss this with than Selina Mason? Selina is a masterplanner and architect with extensive experience of delivering complex urban masterplans. She is responsible for driving high quality design and masterplanning across the UK and Europe in the urban regeneration portfolio of major international developer Lendlease, amounting to £30bn end value. Selina is a recognised leader in urban spatial planning and design leadership. She is a UK Design Council Ambassador and has recently been appointed by the Government to the Urban Centre Recovery Task Force. She is the Chair of the Quality Review Panel of Havering Council, a fast growing part of the Thames Gateway on the east side of London, and is a member of several other Design Review panels. She also represents the Royal Institute of British Architects on the Highways England's Strategic Design Panel where she champions investment in better quality infrastructure. Before joining Lendlease in 2017, Selina led a range of city-shaping regeneration masterplans including the new UCL campus at Stratford, a prime legacy of the 2012 Olympics in the area. Until 2014 she was indeed responsible for the delivery of the London 2012 Masterplan and the design and delivery of the post-Games Transformation Masterplan for the Olympic Delivery Authority and subsequently the London Legacy Development Corporation. And before all this, she was Director of Architecture and Design Review at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) until 2007: CABE's work and approach has been hugely influential internationally. Selina is currently leading on one of the most important urban regeneration projects in Europe, the 50-50 joint venture with London's oldest housing charity Peabody to deliver more than 11,000 homes in Thamesmead in south-east London. With this last podcast of 2021, we encourage you to join us in 2022 for the next podcast series: The Culture Series. We look forward to a new year of remarkable and sometimes provocative conversations with those shaping the culture, both high and low, of our cities across the globe. Tom Holland and Dr Matthew Green take a trip down the Thames to Thamesmead, an overspill "new town" that received its first inhabitants fifty years ago this month, but which is better known as the location used by Stanley Kubrick in his dystopian classic A Clockwork Orange. But was this brutalist solution to London's slum housing doomed from the start, or were some of the ideas of Le Corbusier and those who influenced the design of this place fairly similar to the better accepted work of Ebeneezer Howard and the Garden City movement? Iszi Lawrence is in Fitzrovia with writer, broadcaster and Victorian historian Kathryn Hughes to find out why the lack of public toilets meant women were so inconvenienced in the Victorian and Edwardian period. What lay behind the then-accepted notion that women shouldn't "go" in public? Monks in Leicestershire are brewing up a storm, the first batch of a new Trappist ale. But what's the historic connection between abbeys and brewing? Producer: Nick Patrick A Pier production for BBC Radio 4.

Eloise Hawser presents Anabasis to Dora, a programme of multi-site visits based on research into unusual and contested spaces, museums and collections around the UK. The series formed the background to her current exhibition By the deep, by the mark at Somerset House, until 22 April. The podcast follows Eloise on an Anabasis to Dora tour exploring London’s infrastructure with a bus trip to Beckton sewage treatment works and Crossness via Thamesmead. These waste disposal and transport sites form the functional backbone of the city, interconnected by largely unseen subterranean systems, moving fluids, waste and data around in a constant, necessary flow. Beckton marks the confluence of London’s northern and southern outfall sewers. The 260-acre site has been home to a treatment works for a century, and displays a rare array of different architectural tropes in its myriad buildings and structures. It also plays host to wildlife, a collection of Brutalist incinerators, a cylindrical pond, and all with an unexpectedly agrarian look to it.  Crossness, a now out-of-use Victorian sewage pumping station, fronted by ornate, almost church-like nineteenth century ironwork, a sunken void at the back hinting at its less attractive function. Crossness – adorned in ornate, richly painted ironwork – has been dubbed a ‘cathedral on the marsh’. It is both an expression of grand nineteenth-century ambition and a fundamentally utilitarian structure serving the most unglamorous necessities of a human population. Podcast produced by Somerset House Studios, edited by Jo Barratt. Music: Cylinder Nine by Chris Zabriskie, Global Warming by Kai Engel
