We recorded this conversation just before the world shifted on October 7th. We actually have several conversations that we still need to release that we recorded in August and September, but I wanted to get to this one first due to the urgency of Shaka Shakur's situation. Shaka Shakur is a New Afrikan Political Prisoner who has been behind the walls for the majority of his life since he was 16 years old. He's currently held captive at Beaumont Correctional Center in Virginia. He was mentored by figures such as Zolo Azania and James “Yaki” Sayles. Shaka has an extensive track record of prisoner organizing and exposing injustices and human rights violations behind the walls. I'll include a more extensive bio from his Jericho Movement page in the show notes. Shaka had reached out to me after the publication of our discussion with Thandisizwe Chimurenga and Yusef “Bunchy” Shakur on Sanyika Shakur's political writings. He wanted to share some things and also offer the perspective of someone from Sanyika's generation who spent many years studying and struggling in the same circles, and communicating with Sanyika through the Prison News Service and other publications that circulated behind the walls connecting New Afrikan prisoners and other political and politicized prisoners. Shaka also describes similar experiences of becoming politicized during their first period of incarceration at a young age, struggling upon his return to the outside & ultimately ending up back behind the walls. Shakur shares his reflections on that era, on changes in the prison movement and outside support movements over time and on the disconnect that often exists between revolutionary rhetoric and revolutionary action in the US left in recent years.  Importantly, Shaka Shakur is currently dealing with multiple urgent health issues, including his battle with cancer and we have multiple links and ways people can support his legal campaign and his request for clemency. We will have links to all of this in the show notes, but just to say that he is still asking people to call in and put pressure the Department of Correction for further medical testing. That call is in the show notes as well.  This episode was also recorded before the passing of Ed Mead who we mention in this discussion. Rest well Ed, you've earned it.  The last thing I will say is that although this was recorded before the Palestinian struggle took center stage, I think many of Shaka's reflections are relevant to that movement as well as the US based solidarity efforts that are currently underway so keep that in mind as you listen. Sanyika “the Firestarter” Street helps men build profitable service-based businesses. He's also a keynote speaker and the host of Going All-In, A Podcast for Men. While he was trying to find his voice, Sanyika decided to stop speaking and start listening, and that's when everything changed. The most powerful thing he began to hear was what was going on beneath the surface, especially the narratives and stories men tell themselves. Many people were trying to build successful businesses on the surface level, but under the surface, there was a great deal of what Sanyika refers to as the three “Uns”: feeling unlovable, unworthy, and misunderstood.Sanyika and I talk about standing firmly in the role God calls them into and what men can do to stop sending that call to voicemail. Because of the culture we live in, many of us would rather be informed than transformed. We discuss how our childhood experiences impact us, and Sanyika shares his own stories about navigating core wounds. Our conversation also includes how women can get closer to the men in their lives through vulnerability, parenting your parents, being a chain breaker, and how we can grow through discomfort. What's Inside:Why men need to stop sending God's call to voicemail. How to navigate core wounds and transmute the energy. How to grow through discomfort. Mentioned In This Episode:Listen Then Speak PodcastThe All In Method Website

In this episode we welcome Thandisizwe Chimurenga and Yusef “Bunchy” Shakur to have a conversation that revolves around Sanyika Shakur's final book, Stand-Up, Struggle Forward: New Afrikan Revolutionary Writings on Nation, Class and Patriarchy. Thandisizwe Chimurenga is an award-winning Los Angeles-based journalist. Having worked in print and radio/broadcast journalism, she is the author of No Doubt: The Murder(s) of Oscar Grant; Reparations … Not Yet: A Case for Reparations and Why We Must Wait; the soon-to-be-published Some Of Us Are Brave: Interviews and Conversations with Sistas on Life, Art and Struggle, published by Daraja Press, and Nobody Knows My Name: Coming of Age in and Resilience After the Black Power Movement co-written with Deborah Jones, to be published by Diasporic Africa Press. Her commitment to infusing radical Black feminist/womanist politics within Revolutionary New Afrikan Nationalism, which she believes is key to destroying capitalism, patriarchy and white supremacist imperialism, has been informed by Aminata Umoja, Assata Shakur, Pearl Cleage, bell hooks, Angela Davis, Queen Mother Moore, Gloria Richardson, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Baker, Claudia Jones, Ida B Wells and the “Amazons” of Dahomey. Yusef “Bunchy” Shakur is a father, neighborhood organizer, author of multiple books, educator and a member of Community Movement Builders. He organizes in Detroit, Michigan. Yusef wrote the foreword to Sanyika's Stand Up, Struggle Forward which we're discussing today and Sanyika Shakur wrote the foreword to Yusef Shakur's book Redemptive Soul.  In this discussion Thandisizwe and Yusef talk about their own personal and political relationships with Sanyika Shakur and to his writings. We talk a little bit about New Afrikan political thought as it emanated from the New Afrikan Prisoners Organization particularly as was elaborated by Owusu Yaki Yakubu formerly known under the names James “Yaki” Sayles and Atiba Shanna. We discuss the importance of terminology within the New Afrikan Independence Movement and the contributions of Yaki and Sanyika to this body of political thought.  Thandisizwe Chimurenga and Yusef “Bunchy” Shakur share reflections on Sanyika's writings on patriarchy, homophobia and transphobia and on revolutionary transformation. They discuss the difficulties of re-entry for politicized and political prisoners in an environment without a strong political home to return to, as well as the use of solitary confinement and control units as weapons against politicized figures. Since the publication of our last episode Dr. Mutulu Shakur has transitioned beyond this realm and we want to send our condolences to all of his loved ones and co-strugglers, we also want to take this moment to recognize his indelible contributions to the New Afrikan Independence Movement and the cause of Black Liberation. In the show notes we will link to the book we discuss which can be found through Kersplebedeb or leftwingbooks.net along with the writings of Yaki. We highly, highly recommend both. In this educational and uplifting khutbah, we get to hear from Khateebah Hajjah Abrafi S. Sanyika, who also serves as a Griot/Djelli (preserver of African oral history). Hajjah Abrafi enlightens us about the parallels between the celebration of Muslims fleeing oppression through their Hijrah (migration) to Abyssinia and of the enslaved Africans (1/3 of whom were Muslim) celebrating their newfound freedom in America through the holiday Juneteenth -- freedom always being a victory for Allah. She reminds us of the Islamic wisdom through which the pre-Islamic practice of slavery was phased out -- a way that did not backfire and lead to persistent racial hatred as it did with the abrupt abolition of slavery in the United States of America. Hajjah Abrafi highlights the many verses of the Qur'an that mandate not only the freeing of enslaved peoples but also of good treatment and reparations to those who were formerly enslaved. B I O Hajjah Abrafi S. Sanyika is a proud native of Chicago, which was founded on the shore of Lake Michigan by an African fur trader, Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable. She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and listened as a young child to the life-affirming teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Even then she knew that there is only One God, because that is what her parents taught at home. She remembers being “thrown out” of Sunday school at age eleven, because she announced that Jesus (pbuh) was not the “son of God”, but a great prophet like all the other great prophets. She was exposed to many religious/spiritual traditions growing up and continues to honor the beauty in all of them. // Abrafi euphemistically describes her professional career as “eclectic”. She reflects that she is from that generation of women who chose either nursing, teaching, or secretarial work, because other professions were generally foreclosed to women. Sanyika “The Firestarter” Street is a storyteller, leadership mentor and executive coach whose platform, “The All-In Method,” empowers men to live a life of alignment and integrity to become better husbands, fathers and leaders.  What does it mean to you to be “all in” on something? When Sanyika hadn't made the grades or connections to earn an athletic scholarship by the end of high school, he changed his trajectory. And with the help of a coach who showed him a greater possibility in himself, Sanyika went "all in" to achieve his dream of playing on a division one college basketball team.  So, how did he end up as an actor and songwriter in what he calls a “rock bottom sandwich” just a few years later? Tune in to hear Sanyika's story of how a seemingly positive return to his artistic leanings after college landed him in LA with two DUI's, a girlfriend who was paying his bills, and a 1992 BMW 325i that was playing a detrimental role in his self-worth. Learn about the unlikely community of men Sanyika found during that rock bottom who helped transform his life by holding him accountable, and inspiring him to step into his full potential. Plus, hear how all of Sanyika's ups and downs, and ins and outs, served to birth his current mission to empower 1 million to go all in on their body, their business and their being to live the best version of themselves they can be. They will get to experience unique stories from men and boys of all ages that are relatable and focused on mental health issues. By having a dynamic group of participants that are real and talk about real issues our listeners will feel that they are not in this alone, and others are experiencing similar issues and persevere through them. There is a way through, it’s not just me - type of connection. We want the listeners to relate to each generation through their own personal journey and by witnessing their parents, grandparents, brothers, uncles, nephews, and children. We started this show to bridge the generational gap in our male community. To connect our seniors with the greater community, honor their life experience, and pass down their wisdom. To connect our youth to the greater community, acknowledge them and their intrinsic wisdom and guide them into manhood. And pass up their wisdom and advice so we can pave the way for the next wave of masculine leaders. Currently, we are lacking healthy rights of passage and we believe it is essential for our conscious human evolution. We want to connect the adult generation, and hold them accountable for being the bridge, and creating a legacy of awareness that is a pearl of living wisdom.

Fun fact: Did you know that we create a detailed outline for every interview we do here on the podcast? Sometimes we stick to it step by step... and other times we use it as a starting point and allow the conversation to evolve organically. Well, in the episode you're about to hear, we never even looked at the outline. Not once. And why is that? It's because as soon as we started speaking with our special guest Sanyika Street, we immediately connected and spontaneously began exploring deep and intimate issues that are close to our hearts. You see, so often as entrepreneurs we think we've got to stick to business and strategies... but as you'll discover in this episode that couldn't be further from the truth. At the end of the day it's all about connection and relationships. Yes, Sanyika is a successful entrepreneur, masterful storyteller, and moving public speaker... But more than that, he's a truly powerful person who's willing to have the sometimes hard and always meaningful conversations with himself and others. We sincerely hope you enjoy and benefit from our conversation.

Returning Khateebah Hajjah Abrafi S. Sanyika continues with the second part in our discussion on balancing religion and culture -- this time, from the perspective of a Black American Muslim. In her khutbah, Abrafi recounts the African roots of Islam in America, the ways in which African Americans sacrificed and contributed to the freedom and wealth that is enjoyed by all Americans and immigrants to America, and the ways in which she made sure her own daughter was raised with a balance between culture and religion so that she could grow up to love Islam and being a Muslim in America. Bio: Hajjah Abrafi S. She remembers being “thrown out” of her Christian Sunday school at age eleven, because she announced that Jesus (pbuh) was not the “son of God”, but a great prophet like all the other great prophets. She was exposed to many religious/spiritual traditions growing up and continues to honor the beauty in all of them. Abrafi euphemistically describes her professional career as “eclectic”. She reflects that she is from that generation of women who chose either nursing, teaching, or secretarial work, because other professions were generally foreclosed to women. Originally an anthropology major, she redirected when she got a divorce and had to consider raising two small boys as a single parent. Instead, she obtained a B.A. and M.A. in education. Her M.A. thesis was a study of the cocoa industry of Ghana, West Africa. She first taught at the University of Chicago Lab School, then directed Ujima Family Center, an alternative school in Chicago. Moving to California, she attended UCLA Law School, worked for several attorneys, became a realtor, and eventually returned to professional education. She is now retired and has published several position papers, including “An Open Letter to the Immigrant Muslim Community.” She co-wrote The Eternal Genetic Presence, an anthology of visual artist Nathaniel Bustion's incredible talent; and is the author of Makeda, Queen of Sheba, a children's book written in honor of her daughter, Makeda. She is the founder and director of The Egyptian Repertoire Company, a nonprofit educational foundation that researches, writes, and presents seminars and rituals based on African history and culture, and is currently writing two other books for publication.

When you are writing, you have to have good human qualities. You've got to know how to be transparent and vulnerable and know how to collaborate. Sanyika The Firestarter believed he was none of those. Sanyika Street was originally from Washington, DC. He moved to LA to pursue a career in entertainment. At age 24, he was doing national commercials, movies and TV shows on FOX. By age 32, he had a drinking problem which left him broken. At that point, Sanyika realized that the most important thing he needed to do was to start telling his story. The first fire he lit was the light within himself through video blogging. As he started to feel better, it opened the pathways for him to move into the space of speaking and performing arts. Sanyika talks about his YHUTU approach to rebuilding himself and blazing a trail for others to follow.

Your Fans are Waiting - and a spoken word piece at the end--- WHOA! How would you describe yourself? Motivational person who teaches people how to be their best self and love their best self- and their worst self Let's take all this and make something out of it. The best way to describe what i do, is the combination of real tactics and strategies to change your live, to develop your business- primarily through art. Tony Robbins is a huge inspiration.  Identify who you are at the most raw, most honest, and put those pieces together as a mold and create the individual you see.  at 6'8" can seem very intimidating, but he is a sweet heart. The physical represetation of who he is, and the quest to find more transparency in his life. Grew up in DC in "you've got drive throughs, we've got drive bys" "I saw more of the artist in you" as he has gotten to know Lisa. Sanyika hanging out with a friend in a barber shop with his friend who liked to record his thoughts, and the recorder falls out of his pocket and all the guys think they're cops! There is this weird idea that we have to torture ourselves to create. You can still be an artist and be creative.  "You don't have to be bound by the same chains of artistry and struggle. Those two things are mutually exclusive. You can still flourish and prosper." - Sanyika [Tweet theme="basic-white"]"The demonization of money is the first way that artists have been held down." @sanyikastreet #honestlylisa[/Tweet] [Tweet theme="tweet-box-normal-blue"]"If you've played it small long enough, when it looks like things are getting bigger, it gets scary." #honestlylisa[/Tweet] Fear of bouncing off negative attention, fear of not being able to handle the money (Are you listening universe? I can handle it!)  Bouncing back and forth between high and low points. "At that low point, eitherI can choose to rise into the person I always imagine myself being, or i can just stay there and hide." "Rising is scary" - Lisa "Hiding is not a life satisfied" - Lisa Listening to the heart lately, trusting things will be fine as they grow. Everyone wanted Sanyika to fit into the mold, help them move.  "I am the pick up truck" because he's big and strong. But he organizes the truck--- not even do the heavy lifting! Metaphor for what he does now! Wow! [Tweet theme="tweet-box-normal-blue"]"The way you organize and empower people to do good is by asking the powerful questions" @SanyikaStreet #honestlylisa[/Tweet] It feels like an impossible task to be honest with yourself.  "It's so easy to lie when you're 6'8" and 300lbs. Everyone thinks you're a celebrity."-Sanyika "I never want to walk the red carpet because I feel so invisible." - Lisa Sanyika realized that red carpets are for selling yourself or something, so he rarely walks one.  "If you are caught up in a world where you are not being honest with yourself, then no one can help you- no one knows what your challenges are." - Sanyika This process of revelation, vulnerability began with a video blog to tell his story.  Lisa finds it easier to tell the truth on stage than real life. How do you find that? Meditation? Therapy? "We aren't really learning anything new about ourselves, it's more about a revelation process." - Sanyika If you keep hiding, you're going to betray the people who instilled the confidence in you, and the people you could be helping. - Lisa/Sanyika Fans - Real people, maybe even your family and friends for you to be inspirational for. Not even Beyonce status. How do you not shit all over who you were, not that you're feeling better.  "The greatest gift in that struggle is humility" - Sanyika The inability to embrace people you don't agree with, when you're trying to teach the world to be more accepting. Sanyika's Instagram for awesome videos every day.  This has to resonate with me first, anything he wants to teach someone else. "There's nothing more impactful than doing something every day." -Sanyika Some mornings you don't want to do it, but every day you have a choice. It's a very simple equation.  We have choices for more than whats for dinner. Even feelings, "I don't have to feel that way."  "It's so real to me, so grounded in my reality and who I am" - Sanyika, on sharing videos every day That reality guides him. It has to come from the right place. "I am the happiest I've ever been on this planet, and that is the most powerful I can be" - Sanyika I just want to absorb his happiness! I don't know what happiness is most of the time. How shaving your boyfriend's back can bring intimacy - it's not the moments you think they are! We are monkeys grooming each other, nothing more intimate.  "It's not the award on the stage. It is the impact of great moments in your life aligning at the right time " -Sanyika --Or the ability to see it! - Lisa   We are searching for the path, we want to know the way.  Things we aspire to 1) Better quality of life, and 2) Better quality relationships We are really not in this alone, we are sharing a human experience. Incubating your own ideas feels like insanity. OR asking everyone else what to do. Where are you in this? "We must pursue information with the curiosity of a 5 year old, and with the diligence to challenge everyone." -Sanyika You have to do the work on your own, and then ask others when you hit a roadblock. If you want to find the answers, you need to ask the questions and surround yourself with others who will ask you questions for you to answer! Be wary of people who tell you what to do. No one can tell you what to do, when you want something in your heart.  [Tweet theme="tweet-box-normal-blue"]"As people we underestimate the importance of communities." @SanyikaStreet #honestlylisa #honestlylisapodcast[/Tweet] Biggest punishment in society-- solitary confinement. " We punish ourselves by trapping ourselves in our own ideas. The first thing you do is be honest!" - Sanyika Make sure you watch Tony Robbin's documentary "I am Not Your Guru" - bust down your misperceptions, because he is amazing at helping people. Communities are critical to advancing society, because we can't replicate our individual selves. We have a gift, but there are other things we aren't good at, and we need help.  How do I create a community, get people to help me with what I'm doing? "You have to have a message that's greater than you" - Sanyika You think that people gravitate toward you because you're the hero. But there is a journey that that hero embarks upon- They are searching for a mentor. The mentor empowers the hero to be their best self.  Follow the formula that relates to the client/customer/audience. It's never been about you. Danielle LaPorte's Desrie Map - Figuring out what motivates your soul, and being honest and going through ups and downs with yourself.  Dinner Dead or Alive: Tony Robbins Being open to the possibilities of what your desires show to you. Not getting caught up in the original goal.  What do I want to do? What are the actions I need to do to get there? VERBAL RORSCHACH  Love - Warmth Confusion - Fear planets - aligned chinese food - amazing shoes - big stars - overrated hats - don't fit on my head tacos - on every corner in a taco truck peace - always motivation - nothing without action roses - a reminder to stay grounded dirt - the truth         How to leave a love note on iTunes for my Podcast.
