How To Build A Professional Trail Running Team (November 2021)

Way back in November 2021 when this show was just getting off the ground, we did an episode with Sam Parsons - a professional runner and cofounder of the Tinman Elite team based in Boulder, CO. At the time, I was surprised that we had not seen the formation and widespread existence of a truly professionalized, co-located team in the trail running world. So I reached out, he gave me an hour, and I tried to fit in as many questions as I could about how they operate, what's worked, what hasn't, and what it would take to create something similar in our community.I have never done an episode re-run before, but I'm doing it now because (a) it's been over 2 years and we're in a similar position to where we were in 2021, (b) the show didn't have many listeners when the original episode aired so there was little to no reach for the message, and (c) this re-run may queue up a potential part 2 later this winter.Lastly, I'm well aware of the unique challenges that our sport presents for this idea to work, but I'm still convinced it's a good idea. So, I hope that in the coming months and years a band of motivated people run with this idea and make something happen.  Timestamps(1:46) - the story of Tinman Elite(4:01) - speculating on the potential for trail running teams (7:09) - the Tinman playbook for recruiting team members(12:17) - how Tinman coordinates training, racing schedules(17:34) - why aspiring pro runners still default to the roads and track(22:54) - how Sam would grow the sport of trail running(26:47) - Adidas internship(32:17) - brand marketing inspirations for running teams(34:08) - how Tinman creates content for social media(46:08) - lessons from Tinman for the next trail running teamSponsors:Naak - use code SINGLETRACK15 at checkout on their website (https://www.naak.com/) to get 15% off your purchase.Rabbit - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website (https://www.runinrabbit.com/) to get 20% off your next order.Brooks Running - check out their High Point clothing collection and new and improved Cascadia 17 shoe at this link (https://www.brooksrunning.com/singletrack). LinksFollow Sam Parsons and Tinman Elite Follow Finn on Instagram, Strava, YoutubeSupport the show

“I’ll never forget one race, one of my best 5km races was last year at Payton Jordan (2019) and that was when I was really at the height of my mindfulness practise. I was meditating every day – I would wake up and meditate for 10 minutes, I was so aware of what I was doing and how I was feeling throughout the day through mindfulness. I would meditate at night. There was so many moments in that race where I wanted to give up, I was not in shape to run 13:22 for 5km that day, hell no! But I kept giving myself opportunities. I kept giving myself opportunities to keep pushing. Every moment I wanted to give up and let off the pace and let that gap open up I just gave myself one more step, I gave myself one more breath, and I just kept going and going. I kept telling myself that this pain that I’m going through, it’s okay, it’s not something that I possess, it’s just something that’s there. It’s not a part of me, it’s just something that is present currently and that was the huge breakthrough for me. I was like “Holy shit, if I can learn to continue to breath through things, I can push myself to a whole new pain tolerance and to a whole new place that I never knew I could get to before.” Sam Parsons (Tinman Elite) is back on the Sweat Elite Podcast to discuss everything mindfulness with Sweat Elite’s Tait Hearps. “You can achieve these certain states of being through running. Running can be such a meditative endeavour. It can be a way to free yourself from darkness, anxiety, stress, whatever it may be. Running is an escape for a lot of people. That hour that you head out your door can be the best hour of your day. It can be the one hour where you’re not stressing about the test you have the take, or the work that you didn’t do or whatever might be coming up. Learning to take moments in your day just to breathe. I always had this huge misconception with it.” SUBSCRIBE to Sweat Elite to gain access to all content: www.sweatelite.co/subscribe-now Right now you can subscribe annually and score a 5km, 10km, Half Marathon or Marathon specialised training plan.

"I'll never forget one race, one of my best 5km races was last year at Payton Jordan (2019) and that was when I was really at the height of my mindfulness practise. I was meditating every day - I would wake up and meditate for 10 minutes, I was so aware of what I was doing and how I was feeling throughout the day through mindfulness. I kept telling myself that this pain that I'm going through, it's okay, it's not something that I possess, it's just something that's there. It's not a part of me, it's just something that is present currently and that was the huge breakthrough for me. I was like "Holy shit, if I can learn to continue to breath through things, I can push myself to a whole new pain tolerance and to a whole new place that I never knew I could get to before." Sam Parsons (Tinman Elite) is back on the Sweat Elite Podcast to discuss everything mindfulness with Sweat Elite's Tait Hearps. "You can achieve these certain states of being through running. Running can be such a meditative endeavour. It can be a way to free yourself from darkness, anxiety, stress, whatever it may be. Running is an escape for a lot of people. That hour that you head out your door can be the best hour of your day. It can be the one hour where you're not stressing about the test you have the take, or the work that you didn't do or whatever might be coming up. Learning to take moments in your day just to breathe. I always had this huge misconception with it." -- -- SUBSCRIBE to Sweat Elite to gain access to all content: www.sweatelite.co/subscribe-now Right now you can subscribe annually and score a 5km, 10km, Half Marathon or Marathon specialised training plan.

“I just kind of wanted to write my own narrative of what it meant to be a professional runner. I knew coming out of college, I just didn’t want to give up on that dream. It was super important for me to do what I was passionate about and take a chance on myself. That meant moving to Boulder instead of moving to San Francisco and going to work at a 9-5 tech job. Basically, it’s been not giving up on myself knowing I have a lot more to give to the sport…” My guest for today’s episode is Joey Berriatua. This is actually the first podcast episode that I recorded in person in a while and I’m glad it’s with someone who has an appreciation for CITIUS MAG from its start in 2017. Just a few years back, Joey was a diehard Citius fan. He’d buy all the merch we’d put out. He’d listen to all the podcasts, DM us and he was running some solid times at Santa Clara. Sometime around 2018 and once his eligibility was over, he decided to continue his running career and he connected with Sam Parsons and Tinman Elite. He’s seen some big improvements since his move to Boulder and he’s on the cusp of breaking four minutes for the mile. I believe he’s running a mile this weekend, which would be cool to see him finally get under. We talk about how we got to this point, why he took this risk on himself, some people give Tinman a hard time and how he takes that criticism plus what’s the endgame in this pursuit. It’s funny because when I showed up to the Tinman house, I didn’t know I’d be sitting down with Joey so there were no notes and no questions written down for this one. Just two of us having a candid and honest conversation. Enjoy! FULL SHOW NOTES ON CITIUSMAG.COM Catch the latest episode of the podcast on iTunes so subscribe and leave a five-star review. In this third episode, we move into the 1990s to find out how the study and its staff survived the lean years of the 80s and early 90s, and managed to get back in contact with study participants after a 10 year gap. We learn about the study’s stark findings on adults’ numeracy and literacy, which led to the Skills for Life adult learning programme. We also ask study participants what it was like to join the study again as adults and find out how they were getting on in the big wide world after the boom and bust years. Guests include: • Kate Smith, CLS survey manager for more than three decades, discusses how the BCS70 team kept the study going while on monthly contracts. • Professor Heather Joshi, former director of CLS, reflects on the successful Age 26 Survey. • Dr Sam Parsons, CLS research officer, and Professor John Bynner, former BCS70 director, whose stark findings about the poor levels of literacy and numeracy among British adults went on to influence government education policy for the next two decades. • Sue Pember, former government policymaker, who was given responsibility for rolling out the Skills for Life education initiative in the new millennium. • Study members who share their recollections of the 1990s and rejoining the study after a 10 year gap. You're training for a 5km and a 1500m. When you're training for those races, I want you on your toes. I want you feeling good, I want your chest up, I want your arms back. If I give you ten four minute reps, you're going to rest and you're going to attack going into each one of those reps. You're going to get in that stride that I want you to be in today. If I give you a 6-mile tempo run, you're going to lock into 5 minute (mile) pace, get on your heels, hunch over by the end of it and you're going to look like shit. You're going to feel great because you did that last mile in 4:55, but it's not going to be accomplishing what I want you to accomplish today. Our two most downloaded podcast of all time are Joe Vigil and Tinman. Tinman was in the Phoenix area for a couple days, my home area, so I arranged to get together with him. We agreed to sit down to record a podcast. As I was setting up we were talking about my high school team's season and he went to tell me a story about how to quickly heal sprained ankles, 40 minutes later we were still going but had not officially started the podcast yet. I wish we had, one thing you get from talking to Tom is a mixture of absolute passion for running and incredible knowledge of the science and why. So 40 minutes in I hit the record button and we picked up where we were in the discussion. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. 1:30 We need to work on our skills as endurance athletes, how? Learn from sprint coaches Learn from youtube Take sprint mechanic classes and education 2:52 How much time do you work with your athletes on skills? Talk about knee drive and arm position often Assign training like hill repeats Sam Parsons had no power, huge drops when developed power 4:20 Types of hill repeats 30 seconds mile pace effort, the effort is key 1-2x a week but never get away from it year round 5:15 What about if you live in Florida and have no hills Drive to hills Stadium Steps Pull sleds, not too much weight and do technically sound 6:36 Injury prevention This helps minimalize injuries, can never escape Don't overcook with workouts Slow on easy days 7:34 Keep the ball rolling Don't do anything to disrupt training Post run nutrition Dynamic flexibility Hill work Sleep Slow on easy days Sleep not texting in bed Like a snowball, keep it rolling 10:40 What does it mean to you, when we talk about non-elite runners and easy/hard days Modulate days Easy days are easy, 2:00 or 2:300 or more slower than current 5k pace Cant execute when fatigued 12:18 Walking through a week Talking about a cross-country week with a weekly race Monday long run with striders Tuesday easy run Wednesday key workout Thursday easy run Friday pre-meet work with striders Saturday race with a good amount of distance after 13:49 Do you do that year around? One long run and 2 quality days a week, race counts as a quality day 14:31 How hard are you going on the quality days If not sure use CV reps, hill reps and striders Drew did zero of the 8, 10 or 12x400 type workouts in high school, none You don't need to go real hard if you are doing plenty of 600, 800, 1000 CV's Lots of talk on muscle fibers 23:37 If CV is so great, should you be doing them a few times a week during non-race season Dose-response rate, you get almost all you need from one workout a week Run 1600 or 800 have them do CV work after the run 26:40 Brogan Austin was recently on our podcast off his national championship, how is training different with a marathoner? We never ran a marathon pace workout More fast/intermediate CV speed is better Challenge is the pounding of the distance Cruising speed is more important, 10k/10 mile type pace 29:24 We have a lot of marathon and ultra listeners would their CV work volume be different Build up to 20-24 minutes in reps is all you need No isolation training, there is only one energy system Integrate the different speeds into workouts Kids should participate in other sports, but some kids don't like the other sports 36:24 What is the future of Tinman Elite Focused on Olympics, already have 3 qualifiers Will have everything from 800-marathon in the trials Will add females at some point We are team, but we are family 43:50 Stryd Power Meter Measures lots of components of your stride Verticle Oscillation is interesting to watch Helps you identify issues Analyzing races Previous Episode with Tom Recent episode with Brogan Austin Tinman Elite Website Tinman Elite Twitter Tinman Elite Instagram Final Surge Instagram Final Surge Twitter Final Surge Facebook Stryd Power Meter

We sat down with the Tinman Elite team for a podcast taping in front of a live audience at Fitness Sports in Des Moines. The guests included Drew Hunter, Sam Parsons, Reed Fischer and Tyler Mueller. We discussed Reed's surprising 4th place finish in the men's 10,000 meters and what it's like returning back to the running store where he clocked hundreds of hours. The show delves into the start of Tinman Elite, trusting Tom Schwartz, 'Keeping the Ball Rolling' and competing with a chip on your shoulder. We take a few questions from the audience. The audio may be a little difficult to hear since the mic was set just in front of the runners and Chris. You can catch the latest episode of the podcast on iTunes so subscribe and leave a five-star review. We are also now on Stitcher and now Google Play! Welcome to episode 83 of the Final Surge Podcast where we welcome new professional runner Sam Parsons. Sam is a runner with Adidas and the new Tinman Elite running team in Boulder Colorado. In this episode, you will hear the enthusiasm Sam has for running and the running profession. We talk about Sam's high school days, his transition to running at NC State and what it is like running for Tinman, Tom Schwartz who he calls the mad genius of running. The Tinman Elite crew uses Final Surge as a training platform and it is great to hear the enthusiasm Sam and his teammates have for the sport. We dive into how the mental part of running is so important to Sam and how his training has changed under Tinman.   How did you get your start in running? Multi-sport athlete Soccer, Swim, Lacrosse  Watched sister run Soccer coach encouraged him to run cross country for conditioning Ran Nike Cross Nationals as a Senior After high school, you ran at NC State. What was a harder transition, transitioning from high school to college or college to the professional ranks? Transition to college was harder Burn out is high because of greater impact on the body Wasnt ready for demands on the body  You mentioned one of the harder parts of jumping from high school to college was the milage demands, what were you running in high school? High School we had good workouts but the next day was an easy 30-minute recovery run, in college it was a 12-mile recovery run NC State is a development school with a 2-4 year plan What about the mental aspect, how has the mental part of running and competing changed as you have grown? Need to train the mind to be ready to close a race out Mind needs to tell yourself you will win and are unstoppable Need to stay positive  How do you think you changed to become a more serious runner? Too many late nights As a professional need to take care of your self with sleep and eating right Many of us follow professional runners on Instagram and see runs in absolutely stunning locations, then naps, and free shoes… What has the transition to a professional runner been like? Never want to look back and think should've, could've, would've Boulder is a great place to be at You are running for Adidas now, how did that relationship develop? Started as an intern for Adidas tennis Would finish work and head down to the running department Fell in love with the company when worked for them Ran into Drew Hunter when he was racing there Reached out to Tom Schwartz You did the BAA mile where you got 5th and then recently ran the mile at Drake’s. You ran a lot of 5-10ks on the track in college so is this miler thing just part of the training season you are in or what are your plans? Tom recognized I should run sub-4 If I want to be a great 5-10k runner I need to close in 55 seconds Need more speed work for long-term Working on developing speed  Let’s talk a little bit about training. You are now training with Tinman, Tom Schwartz. We have had him on the podcast in the past and this past January I had the privilege of getting to spend a little time with him while at a clinic. What has been the biggest change in your training? Tom is a mad genius He loves hills We run a lot slower now, easy days are now 7:30 pace Always wants us ready for workouts We don't taper, always ready to race Don't work on one system, work on speed and strength in workouts Tinman is known for his CV efforts. How do you define CV effort, what pace is that for you? Critical Velocity Pace you can hit and feel comfortable, K's a CV are about 2:55 or maybe 5:00 pace on longer runs Training is not hard, but easy workouts We did 8x600 last week with rest of 1:14, that exact Very rarely do we go hard to the well in a workout   One of our loyal Twitter follers MacBane, a Twitter follower wants to know How do you have fun on race day?
