Ep 182: Communicating with Respect — The RIE Approach with Melani Ladygo

Ask Dr Jessica

Send us a textIn this episode, I'm joined by Melani Ladygo to explore the RIE approach — a respectful, relationship-based way of communicating with children from infancy onward. Developed by Magda Gerber in the late 1970s, RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers) is built on the idea that even the youngest babies deserve to be treated as capable individuals, with mutual respect at the core.Melani shares how RIE gives parents a practical framework for setting boundaries without being either too harsh or too permissive. We talk about what respectful caregiving actually looks like with infants and toddlers, how to respond to challenging behaviors like hitting, biting, and tantrums, and why staying calm and connected matters so much — even when emotions run high.If you're looking for a parenting approach that blends empathy, clear boundaries, and authentic connection, this conversation will offer both inspiration and real-world tools you can start using right away.

When one thinks of traditional parenting, one might remember a stern talking to, or maybe even punished. In many ways, the traditional paradigm of parenting has been quite disciplinarian. In some regards, this has changed over the last several years. Many thought leaders and therapists now seem to be encouraging a different approach – one based less on punishment and ‘taking things away', but more based on understanding our children's feelings, walking them through their emotions, and not relying as heavily on punishment and consequences. So what exactly spawned this transformation? And how are kids being raised differently than they used to. The Monaco and Petit Monaco diaper bags from LuliBebé have changed everything. The soft vegan faux leather texture is elegant yet easy to care for, able to take spills without missing a beat. The bags can be worn as a backpack—popular with dads too—a shoulder/crossbody bag, or attached to a stroller with clips (included). The central satin lined main storage area is ringed with eight pockets, so it's easy to keep all of the baby's things organized, whether it's for a day at the pool, or sightseeing during a family getaway . The changing mat and external pockets for phones, keys and more, make this diaper bag versatile and still fun to carry. Traveling with young children is an exercise in making sure everything parents need is at the ready but that is easily done with the Monaco diaper bag line. Diapers, wipes, a blanket and soothers… all within easy reach in pockets that keep it all organized, instead of a jumble. The open top design of the bag makes it easy to see and get what you need quickly, and the elegant look will have others wondering if in fact it's a diaper bag and not the latest “it bag”. A trip across the country or just down the road is a lot more practical and bursting with style, with LuliBebé Monaco diaper bags. A list of parenting quotes for smart parenting styles. From encouraging schoolwork and sports to modeling values as a child grows (remember, they do as you do, not as you say!) parents exert enormous influence over their children's lives. They are, however, not the only on-the-ground influencers—especially after children enter school and begin interacting with the world at large. Most parents work to give children the best start possible, but it's also important for parents to recognize that kids come into the world with their own temperaments, personalities, and goals. While parents may want to push their child down a certain path, a parents' job is to provide an interface with the world that ultimately prepares a child for complete independence and the ab Spoken by my virtual assistant ility to pursue whatever path they choose. In a rapidly changing world, parenting can be subject to fads and changing styles, and parenting in some privileged circles has become a competitive sport. But the needs of child development as delineated by science remain relatively stable: safety, structure, support, and love.I have consolidated a group of quotes focusing on how to parent in 2021. I hope you learn and sometimes laugh.

Welcome to the Teaching Your Toddler interview with Parenting Expert and Former Elementary School Teacher Laura Linn Knight as she talks to our host Marijo Tinlin about incredibly practical calming technique to take your child (and you) from crazy to calm. Laura is a former kindergarten and 1st grade teacher who found out that once she became a parent herself, kids are different at home than at school. Listen to Laura talk about the “Big Emotions” kids feel when they are in the safe haven of home and how that manifests itself when they are unhappy. Also, what do you do when your toddler melts down OUTSIDE of your home – what are the techniques you can use to help calm them down? (And get yourself calmed down as well!). Laura talks about the connection between the pre-frontal cortex of rational thought and how we as parents need to become that rational person for our child because they still live in their “lizard” brain portion called the amygdala. Our brains don't fully form that connection between the two parts until we are 25 so we really need to help our kids think rationally. She's offering a free download to our listeners of her brand new “Calm Cards” that have really helped when her own daughter gets upset and now they can help you and your child too. Colorado is one of many states working to ensure that young children experience an equitable, high-quality continuum of services and supports. Liz Houston, Executive Director at the Early Childhood Council Leadership Alliance (ECCLA) provides a glimpse into how Colorado's 34 Early Childhood Councils and community organizations work together to ensure families are connected to local resources and services. Councils have a unique role within their local communities to serve as an early childhood hub for partners, child care providers, caregivers, policymakers, and business leaders to coordinate, collaborate, and align resources. ECCLA's mission is to improve access to quality services and supports for young children through a statewide network of Early Childhood Council leaders and key stakeholders. As a membership association, ECCLA supports Councils by providing technical assistance and capacity building, shared measurement, advocating for policies affecting early childhood issues, and leveraging statewide partnerships. Liz is a seasoned nonprofit professional with a career encompassing resource development, advocacy, communication, and management for a variety of organizations including human services, research and policy, a major cultural institution, K-12 and higher education, and private industry. Find an Early Childhood Council and learn more about ECCLA at www.ecclacolorado.org.
