"Today, we're reliant on space for basic everyday military effectiveness. Without our assets in space, we're blind, we're mute, and we cannot fight to our ability." These are the opening statements from President and CEO of United Launch Alliance (ULA) Tory Bruno as this week's guest with host Marshall Kosloff. As one of the few rocket manufacturers in the market, and a seasoned space innovation hub, ULA is reckoning in real time with the public-private explosion of space technology—both for domestic use and essential national security deterrence. In their conversation, Kosloff and Bruno discuss the state of the rocket industry, what great power competition with China looks like in space, and what the future of private space innovation looks like.

The greater the value of space, the greater the risks. The rise of the space economy is accelerating the business, operational and human risks. Are we prepared to handle them? The Safe Space podcast series – part of the Reducing the Risks of Space campaign – explores policy, law, technology and operations in development now to manage the challenging space environment of the future. The second episode features a conversation about cyber and nuclear threats to space between Nick Reese, Co-Founder of Frontier Foundry Corporation and former Deputy Director for Emerging Technology Policy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Tory Bruno, President & CEO of United Launch Alliance and a member of the Space & Satellite Hall of Fame. Before co-founding Frontier Foundry Corporation, Nick Reese most recently served as the first ever Director of Emerging Technology Policy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, where he advised the White House and senior Cabinet officials on national security implications of emerging technologies. He is the author of the DHS AI Strategy, DHS's Post-Quantum Cryptographic Transition Roadmap, and the 2022 DHS Space Policy. He was also the lead DHS representative for the development of Space Policy Directive-5, National Security Memorandum-10, the National Space Policy, and Executive Order 13960. A noted expert in cybersecurity, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and outer space, he currently holds faculty positions at New York University and George Washington University teaching graduate courses related to emerging technology and geopolitics. Mr. Reese has a 20+ year career in the US Military, Intelligence Community & Homeland security with a focus on operations and bringing technical solutions to high stakes national security challenges. From the front lines of the War on Terror to building Quantum Computing Policy he has been an instrumental actor in protecting our nation with eye both on today and the future. Mr. Reese is a graduate of Saint Leo University and Old Dominion University. He lives in the Washington DC area with his wife and their dog. Tory Bruno came to United Launch Alliance (ULA) in 2014 after a long career managing programs for some of the most advanced and powerful weapons systems in the American arsenal. As general manager of Lockheed Martin Strategic and Missile Defense Systems, he led a team of men and women responsible for the Navy's Trident II D5 Fleet Ballistic Missile, the Air Force's ICBM Reentry Systems and the Terminal High Area Altitude Defense System (THAAD). He managed a joint venture responsible for producing and safely maintaining the UK's nuclear weapons and has engineered control systems for rockets and hypersonic weapons, for which he holds numerous patents. No words describe him better than Tom Wolfe's famous phrase, “a steely-eyed missile man.” When he was tapped to lead ULA, the company was at a crossroads. What had been an effective monopoly on national security and NASA missions had turned competitive as new commercial competitors entered the business. The company needed to adapt to survive. This veteran of military space and missile programs might not have seemed the obvious choice of leader, but he was soon to prove doubters wrong. Tory was inducted into the Space & Satellite Hall of Fame in 2020.

Elon Musk's space company is hiring "offshore operations engineers" to help develop floating spaceports for Starship, its next-gen transportation system designed to take people to and from the moon, Mars and anywhere on Earth they want to go. "SpaceX is building floating, superheavy-class spaceports for Mars, moon & hypersonic travel around Earth," Musk said via Twitter Tuesday (June 16), in response to a tweet that drew attention to the SpaceX hiring notice. Musk also revealed some new details about the plan Tuesday. For example, a Twitter user asked if the offshore spaceports will be refurbished oil rigs, and if Starship passengers will be ferried out to them via Hyperloop, the vacuum-pod transportation idea that Musk proposed in 2012. The billionaire entrepreneur responded, "Pretty much." Musk also said that the offshore spaceports won't exactly hug the coastline. "We need to be far enough away so as not to bother heavily populated areas. The launch & landing are not subtle. But you could get within a few miles of the spaceport in a boat," he said in another Tuesday tweet. The landing he referenced is that of Super Heavy, the 31-engine first stage required to get the 100-passenger Starship off Earth's surface. Super Heavy will come back down to Earth for a vertical touchdown shortly after liftoff, the way first-stage boosters of SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets do now. To date, just one Starship prototype has gotten off the ground: a stubby, single-engine craft called Starhopper, which made a few short test flights last year before being retired. But SpaceX is gearing up for an uncrewed test flight that will take the SN5 ("Serial No. 5") prototype about 500 feet (150 meters) into the South Texas skies, if all goes according to plan. There are currently 540 Starlink satellites in orbit. Eventually, they will form part of a 12,000-strong constellation to beam internet connectivity back to the planet. Users visiting the Starlink website will now find that it invites them to “Get updates on Starlink news and service availability in your area” and input their email and area code. When they do, they will receive an email stating: "Starlink is designed to deliver high-speed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable. Private beta testing is expected to begin later this summer, followed by public beta testing, starting with higher latitudes." "If you provided us with your zip code, you will be notified via email if beta testing opportunities become available in your area. In the meantime, we will continue to share with you updates about general service availability and upcoming Starlink launches." Elon Musk has previously described the device as a “UFO on a stick”. Perseverance: NASA's Mars 2020 rover Link: https://www.space.com/perseverance-mars-2020-rover.html NASA's next Mars rover won't just explore the Red Planet; it will, the space agency hopes, help a little bit of Mars make it to Earth a decade or so from now. Known as Perseverance, the upcoming rover will hunt for signs of habitable environments on Mars while searching for signs of past microbial life. The robotic traveler will also cache a series of samples that can be returned to Earth with a future mission. Perseverance is the centerpiece of NASA's Mars 2020 mission, which is currently slated to blast off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in July or August 2020, when Earth and Mars are positioned to require the least amount of power for interplanetary travel. It is scheduled to land on Feb. 18, 2021, with an initial mission duration of at least one Martian year, or 687 Earth-days. The car-sized rover is about 10 feet long (not including the arm), 9 feet wide, and 7 feet tall (about 3 meters long, 2.7 meters wide, and 2.2 meters tall). At 2,314 lbs. (1,050 kilograms), Perseverance weighs less than a compact car. If photos and sketches of the Perseverance rover look familiar, that's because the robotic explorer is largely based off its predecessor, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover (November 26, 2011, 9:02 AM CST). Roughly 85% of the new rover's mass is based on this "heritage hardware." "The fact that so much of the hardware has already been designed — or even already exists — is a major advantage for this mission," Jim Watzin, director of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, said in a statement. "It saves us money, time and most of all, reduces risk." Perseverance will seek out biosignatures from the past on a microbial scale. A ground-penetrating radar will be the first rover instrument to look under the surface of Mars, mapping layers of rock, water and ice up to 30 feet (10 m) deep. Mars 2020 launch slips three days. A launch vehicle processing "hiccup" has pushed back next month's launch of NASA's Mars 2020 rover mission by three days. NASA Associate Administrator Steve Jurczyk revealed the delay in a presentation to a joint meeting of the National Academies' Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board and Space Studies Board June 9, SpaceNews reports. A crane pain ... Tory Bruno, ULA president and chief executive, said on Twitter that a problem with a crane used as part of launch vehicle processing caused the delay, an issue that has since been corrected. The delay pushed back the launch of Mars 2020 to July 20, with a two-hour window opening at 9:15am ET from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Join the Episode after party on Discord! Link: https://discord.gg/ZzJSrGP SpaceX wants to build an offshore spaceport near Texas for Starship Mars rocket Link: https://www.space.com/spacex-mars-starship-offshore-launch-landing.html SpaceX's Mars-colonizing missions may not launch from terra firma. Kerbal Space Program (or KSP as it’s more commonly known by fans) is a tremendously successful space flight simulator. It has been hailed by game industry critics and space industry leaders such as ULA’s Tory Bruno and SpaceX’s Elon Musk as providing the "perfect blend of science and slapstick,” as well as for its ability to create fun out of failure.  Grant Gertz is a game producer for Private Division, the company developing KSP’s much-anticipated sequel. Gertz is unique in his industry in that he doesn’t come from a computer programming background. He was once an aerospace engineer working at Aerojet Rocketdyne. When the opportunity arose to shift gears in his career and indulge in his love of video games, he took the leap.  During our conversation, we discuss his unique path to a career in video games, the influence of space technology on pop culture, the educational value of video games, and how developer Private Division plans to build on the success of the first release with Kerbal Space Program 2. Grant very generously took time out of his busy schedule to talk to us (as you can literally hear his team play testing the sequel in the background of the interview).

United Launch Alliance CEO Tory Bruno chats with Dean Paul Jarley on the state of space exploration. 50 years after the Apollo 11 moon landing, rocket launch technology has drastically improved and the prospect of commercial space travel is almost top of mind. Can space tourism really become the multi-billion dollar market that some expect it to be? And are Cape Canaveral and the Space Coast ready for the demand? Is space ready to be the final commercial frontier?   Featured Guests Tory Bruno - CEO, United Launch Alliance Episode Highlights 3:18 - How Tory Bruno became CEO of United Launch Alliance 5:48 - How United Launch Alliance came to be 8:42 - What's it like being involved in the space industry during such a competitive time? 12:36 - How much cheaper can rocket launches get? 13:34 - What kinds of companies could be most successful in utilizing space travel? 16:33 - When will humans live and work in space? Engage in space tourism? Get to Mars? 21:27 - What's the most important thing to know about the commercialization of space? 23:20 - Questions from the audience: Do you anticipate building things in space to avoid loss during launch? How do you see real property rights being involved in space? What's it like working with Blue Origin on the Vulcan engine? Have there been any attempts to develop insurance for spacecrafts? Does ULA have any plans to develop a heavy lift rocket? Where did you see the space industry headed when you started your career? Can you elaborate on the difference between components vs. propulsion? Why does ULA exist? 34:35 - Dean Paul Jarley's final thoughts   Episode Transcription   Paul Jarley:                         There are certain moments in time that stay with you. I remember where I was 50 years ago today. I was 10 years old. I was on the beach at a lake near my hometown, clutching a radio, and listening to mission control. It was 4:18 in the afternoon when Neil Armstrong said- Neil Armstrong:                Tranquility Base, here. The eagle has landed. Paul Jarley:                         The beach erupted in applause. Paul Jarley:                         This show is all about separating hype from fundamental change. I'm Paul Jarley, Dean of the College of Business here at UCF. I've got lots of questions. To get answers, I'm talking to people with interesting insights into the future of business. Have you ever wondered, "Is this really a thing?" Onto our show. Paul Jarley:                         The race to the moon was a race to glory that brought a much needed boost to democratic capitalism in its Cold War with totalitarian communism. But this was not the first time a group of explorers had set out for glory and to assert the political power of a government patron. Christopher Columbus comes to mind. There what started out as a search for glory, quickly turned to commercial interests complete with conquistadors searching for gold and pirates looking to steal it. Colonization and wars followed. Will history repeat itself? Is space ready to be the final commercial frontier? If so, can space pirates and colonization be far behind? Listen into my conversation with Tory Bruno. He's CEO of United Launch Alliance. In other words, a rocket man. He spoke to a group of business and engineering students earlier this year in The Exchange. Paul Jarley:                         So how cool is that? So, for my engineering students, this is The Exchange. And the idea behind The Exchange is that we have a speaker in here every day talking to business students about careers, about their career path. About how they might become part of an industry, if that's what they're interested in doing. And today we have kind of a double purpose. So, for those of you who don't know me, I'm Paul Jarley, I'm Dean of the College of Business here. And my job is largely to think about what the college should look like five yea...

Hi, I’m Marc Boucher and this is the SpaceQ podcast. If you like what we do, please support us on Patreon at https://patreon.com/spaceq. We need your support to make this weekly show. My guest this week is Tory Bruno the president and CEO of United Launch Alliance or as it’s commonly called ULA. Tory joined ULA from Lockheed Martin in August 2014 with a mission to evolve the company in an increasingly competitive market where competitor SpaceX was nipping at their heels to garner a portion of the very lucrative military launch business. In his four years at the helm of the company, he’s had to make many changes, including downsizing the company, making the Atlas V more competitive by dropping the price by as much as 37%, developing plans for a next generation rocket named Vulcan and more. As you’ll hear from Tory, there’s also been some culture change and innovation in reusability isn’t just what SpaceX does. Importantly to ULA, their next rocket, Vulcan, will feature the Advanced Cryogenic Evolved Stage, or ACES upper stage, that the company is betting heavily on.
