My guest today, is an author from Turkiye, Firat Sunel. He is a career diplomat. He is currently the Turkish Ambassador to India.Firat is a demonstrably fascinating novelist. His latest novel, “The Lighthouse Family”, is a wonderful example of storytelling, of craft and of everything literary. I venture to say without qualification that it is one of the best novels I have read in recent years.Because this novel embraces a universally-resonant human sentiment, it makes it relatable across cultures, to anyone anywhere, even if the story it tells is set deep in rural Turkiye. We'll delve into the unique blend of ethnic authenticity and international appeal that characterizes contemporary Turkish literature, tracing its evolution from folk tales to modern intellectual prose. From the reforms of Kamal Atatürk to the global recognition spurred by Orhan Pamuk's Nobel Prize, Turkish literature has garnered increasing attention on the world stage.Firat Sunel is a product of the rich Turkish literary heritage. I had the opportunity of a conversation with him (together with the Lithuanian Ambassador Diana Mickevičienė) live at the Bangalore Literature Festival; and today I have the privilege of having him as my guest here—another conversation I am eager to have. After the ApocalypseA pandemic survival storySeason four, Episode three – “Purpose”…It was a warm day, but it was cool in the shade. He sat in a grotto behind the campus infirmary. A light breeze swayed the hanging branches of a large Weeping Willow tree. The dancing greenery filtered the sunlight into splashes of illumination on the patio and long grass. It smelled like summer. Bill the dog lay on his back in the grass, in a patch of sun, with his legs splayed, head to one side, tongue lolling, snoring softly - no cares in the world. The old man watched the movement of the willow from his chair in the dappled shade. The flecks of sunlight caused him to squint when the kaleidoscope sun broke through the shifting of the draped branches....Website -> http://www.oldmanapocalypse.com Buy me Coffee -> https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cyktrussellSubscribe page on Acast -> https://plus.acast.com/s/after-the-apocalypsePodcast on Acast -> https://shows.acast.com/after-the-apocalypseFacebook group -> https://www.facebook.com/groups/oldmanapocalypsePatreon to support the show -> https://www.patreon.com/AftertheApocalypseKindle Vella Story -> https://www.amazon.com/kindle-vella/story/B09LTRC8RHMerch Store -> https://www.teepublic.com/stores/after-the-apocalypse Twitter -> cyktrussell@twitter.comEmail List -> https://acast.us14.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=a02fed2a783fcc887760255a9&id=e15419e7behttps://fundraisers.hakuapp.com/christopher-russell Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/after-the-apocalypse. The Adventures Of The Falcon: This hard boiled spy drama began as an RKO Radio Pictures theatrical serial in the 1940s, went on radio in 1943, and then came to TV around ten years later in a Syndicated series produced for distribution by NBC Films; the series was about an American agent whose code name was "Falcon".The success of the films led to a radio series that premiered on the American Blue Network in April 1943, and aired for the next ten years on various networks. It was here that his transition into a private eye was finalized, with The Falcon, now called Michael Waring working as a hardboiled insurance investigator, with an office and a secretary, Nancy. The Case Of The Weeping Willow: Fun with a gun leads to a big bang out of life! We're talking about this movie! So join Jon, Jenn, Danny, and Kristen as they talk over the movie of Prisoner of Azkaban. Kym and Lauren sit outside the Allendale Train Station and talk about the Snapdragon. We see a flashback to when Tristan and Dakan spoke with Lauren after the accident. We learn of the oppression of the previous monarch, and the betrayal of the Snapdragon by an anonymous member. We discuss the mysterious lack of burning of the willow planted by Mr. Rosenthal. We learn a bit more about Daena's death, and then Kym opens up to Lauren about how she felt at the factory. We infer that Kym doesn't believe Lauren's partner is dead. She wants to help Lauren with Lune's investigation, but Lauren doesn't want to tell her anything. After the hug, Kym stiffens, coughs, and collapses. ***
We're joined by one of the kings of UK science-fiction and fantasy, the literary agent John Jarrold, to talk about Rob Holdstock's majestic 1984 novel Mythago Wood, winner of the World Fantasy Award.Over a career spanning almost fifty years John has become one of the leading lights and champions for British genre fiction, and a household name within that community. In the publishing industry he has run three SFF imprints: Legend at Random House; Earthlight at Simon & Schuster, and Orbit books, where one of his authors was none other than Rob Holdstock. These days he runs the John Jarrold Literary Agency, with and continues to be a hugely influential and popular figure in the industry and SFF community. We talk about the peculiar Englishness of Mythago Wood, with respect to its post-war setting, which informs the damaged male characters at the heart of the book and how this in turn has an impact on the representation of the female characters present. We also touch upon the cycle of myth and history, the myth of the hostile brothers, and Holdstock's wonderful writing style. John brings his enormous experience to bear as we talk at length about the publishing industry and how it has changed over the last fifty years. He is armed with great anecdotes, and the list of people he's worked with over the years read like a Who's Who of international SFF.Elsewhere Damaris Browne dishes up some salacious details on how to handle the issue of privacy, and how to approach using real-life people in your stories (spoiler alert: very, very carefully). Christine Wheelwright reads Weeping Willows, her winning 75-word entry from June's writing challenge, and the trees in Slish Wood are not - I repeat not - of interest to the CIA.Join us next month when our guest will be the novelist, poet and essayist Naomi Foyle, who'll be talking with us about Jo Zebedee's alien invasion-cum-prison break thriller Inish Carraig.Further ReadingThere'll Always Be An England in Mythago WoodIndex[0:00:00 - 49:15] John Jarrold Interview Part 1[49:16 - 50:24] Voicemail 1[50:25 - 1:05:10] The Judge's Corner[1:05:16 - 1:06:14] Voicemail 2[1:06:15 - 1:07:20] Writing Challenge Winner[1:07:21 - 1:08:36] Voicemail 3[1:08:37 - 2:02:12] John Jarrold Interview Part 2[2:02:13 - 2:04:18] Credits and Close
I thought I'd try doing a bit of sketching this time and focus on those scratching sounds of the pencil on paper. I drew a Weeping Willow tree, so most of the lines are fairly long, rather than a shorter more staccato cadence from smaller strokes. There's some sounds of paper moving as well, but it's largely just the sounds of pencil on paper. For this episode, we are speaking with Kramies, the folk singer/songwriter who has worked with Jason occasionally over the last 10 years. Kramies shares his perspective on the type of jaw-dropping impact that Jason can have on a song during its production. Additionally, he'll explain what is perhaps the greatest metaphor anyone could possibly come up with to explain Grandaddy. To wrap up, Kramies will discuss another iconic song written by Jason Lytle, pointing out details that many may not have previously noticed otherwise.
