Steven LaChance is my guest on this segment of "The Strange Reality Show with Dave Emmons," recorded on 11-14-24. Steven tells us about his early experiences at his haunted childhood home in Union, Missouri, which inspired him to write about horror stories with a factual basis. Steven tells us about a shadowy figure of a man that showed itself at all times of the day in his house where he was raising three children. Steven says the ghost or spirit followed him and his family to another home. In 2008, it motivated him to write about his experiences in his first book, "The Uninvited." Which is still a top-selling book about his family's paranormal experiences. Since this spirit would not leave their domain, he wrote a follow-up book "Blessed Are the Wicked (2010), continuing the haunting story. Steven went on to investigate many paranormal stories with teams of experts. That is when he wrote stories about other peoples' experiences in the book Crazy: A Prayer for the Dead (2012), a terrifying tale based on actual events. Steven took an interest in the St. Louis Exorcism case in 1949, researched, and wrote a book "Confrontation with Evil (2017). After that book, he rested from the paranormal until 2024. Steven's new book "Glow" explores the world of nightmares and chilling accounts of the supernatural. The book, "The Uninvited was selected as one of the best Books of 2008 by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He talks about people with PTSD from certain paranormal events. Steven has written the above books but has several sequels that he is working on as a full-time author. His career was in Radio Production and on-air work. He has had TV appearances and consulted various TV shows, including: "The Exorcism of Roland Doe." You can find his books on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and all other outlets. In honour of World Radio Day—which landed on February 13th—this week's RA Exchange celebrates the power of radio in a documentary-style deep dive. UNESCO inaugurated World Radio Day in 2011 in order to commemorate its efficacy in reaching remote communities, connecting with people everywhere regardless of their education level, and providing a platform for positive and democratic discourse. It's also critical in spreading critical information during times of crisis or emergency. According to UNESCO, "increasing radio's journalistic standards and capacity should be considered as an investment in peace." On a more modest level, podcasting and radio, especially in the world of underground music, can help forge in-person and virtual networks and celebrate and spread new and lesser-known music. During the pandemic, it also held together underground music scenes when people couldn't be together in the club, and sustained a kind of intimacy and connection by letting people share music over the airwaves and community platform chat rooms. In this episode, we hear from various radio producers around the world—including Jamz Supernova, Hana Walker Brown, Dublab Barcelona and Hong Kong Community Radio, among others—about why radio resonates so strongly with them. "Good radio is always an exercise in connection, especially host-led radio,” says Rory Bowens, NTS's Head of Radio Production. “The fact that it's a live experience is really crucial. People can listen to something in real time with a huge audience of other listeners at the same time, and that intrinsically connects them to each other." Take a listen to the episode in full.

In the early 1980s, the University of Alberta funded a series of experimental literary radio programs, which were broadcast across the province on the CKUA community radio network. At the time, CKUA station had just been resurrected through a deal with ACCESS and was eager for educational programming. Enter host and producer Jars Balan – then a masters student in the English department with limited radio experience. For five years, Balan produced three radio series, Voiceprint, Celebrations, and Paper Tygers, which explored the intersection of language, literature, and culture, and he interviewed some of the biggest names in the Canadian literary scene, including Margaret Atwood, Maria Campbell, Robert Kroetsch, Robertson Davies, and many others. This episode is framed as a “celebration” of those heady days of college radio in the early 80s. In it, clips from Jars's radio programs, recovered from the University of Alberta Archives, supplement interviews with Balan and audio engineer Terri Wynnyk. Special tribute will be given to the recently departed Western Canadian poets Doug Barbour and Phyllis Webb through the inclusion of their in-studio performances recorded for Balan's own Celebrations series. By looking back on the pioneering days of campus radio, this episode sheds light on the current moment in scholarly podcasting and how the genre is being resurrected and reimagined by a new generation of “academics on air.”Special thanks to Arianne Smith-Piquette from CKUA and Marissa Fraser from UAlberta's Archives and Special Collections, and to SpokenWeb Alberta researcher Zachary Morrison, who worked behind the scenes on this episode.SpokenWeb is a monthly podcast produced by the SpokenWeb team as part of distributing the audio collected from (and created using) Canadian Literary archival recordings found at universities across Canada. "Social Audio" has been one of the audio buzz terms of 2021 and that looks set to continue in 2022. Facebook, Twitter, Spotify and Clubhouse are just some of the big names who have looked to explore the space over the last 18 months with audio creators around the world looking at how they can use the tools created to increase engagement and improve discoverability. On this episode of Voiceworks: Sound Business; Jim Salveson talks to Ann Charles. Ann is an expert in audio production and it's accompanying technology. She is also an expert coach for all things sound and is one of the brains behind Radio TechCon (The UK radio and audio industry's technical and engineering conference). In this interview, Ann talks about the past, present and future of Social Audio and the challenges it faces. She also discusses how audio producers can unlock the power of social media to help grow their audiences now and talks about "Audio Objects" a (relatively) new development in the sound industry that could be the future of audio production. You can find more about Ann and her work (as well as details of the free "Socially Sharing Sound" course she mentions on the podcast via her website https://anncharles.tv/ (along with load more useful stuff) and you can follow her on Twitter via @sparkyannc If you want to learn more about sound or find out how Voiceworks can help you unlock the power of audio at www.voiceworks.ai Learn more about your ad choices. Keeping an audio journal

Adam Stoner

If you enjoy this podcast, consider buying me a coffee: https://adamstoner.com/support I've kept an audio journal for over five years. When I began I was studying Radio Production at the University of Gloucestershire. I've worked for a couple of radio stations since then including the UK's children's radio station Fun Kids where I currently produce podcasts including The Week Junior Show and Activity Quest. During university I would record voice memos on my iPhone and email those to a Tumblr account. I'm not sure I was fully aware of what a podcast was at the time but I suppose that's essentially what I was making; a hyper-deconstructed, voicemail-esque, far-too-frequent podcast. After university I downloaded all of the voice memos and binned the account but I carried on logging my thoughts and capturing sound. These voice memos feature friends old and new, relationships past and present, and places that no longer exist. One of the earliest is my then-girlfriend and I walking around the since-demolished Beechwood Arcade in Cheltenham. Others are filled with the sounds of buskers and church bells, lecturers and concerts. If you listen to the podcast version of this blog post you'll be able to hear some of the things I mention. Soon I realised a lot of creatives do the same thing, especially musicians and others who work in audio, but keeping an audio diary isn't something that's just for people who work in audio. The average person can also benefit from becoming an audio diarist. My setup today isn't that much more complex than the one from 2015. I occationally use a dedicated audio recorder (a Zoom H1 with a pair of Apple Earpods plugged in) but otherwise I still whip out my iPhone to record birdsong, to blab some passing thought into the record, or conduct impromptu interviews with my friends and family (‘where are we off to?', ‘tell us what you can see', ‘what are you doing?') – much to their annoyance, I'm sure. I catalogue and regularly back these recordings up to both Tresorit, my cloud hosting provider of choice, and external drives to make them both safe and highly searchable. Here's how you can become an audio diarist: The best microphone is the one you have. Your iPhone is as good as any studio microphone. It's what I record all of my podcasts on! Introduce each clip with the date, time, and where you are. If there are other people nearby get them to say hello and introduce them too. You don't have to talk. Audio diaries can just be sounds from somewhere. The trickle of a nearby stream, the sound of applause at a stand-up gig, the rowdiness of a central London pub pre-COVID and post-9pm. No written diary is a diary if you burn every page after writing it; no audio diary is an audio diary without audio. Back up your recordings (via iCloud for iPhones) and back them up again. Label them something sensible so you can find what you're after. Let's take my last entry as an example: 141020 (the date) 1856 (the time) at Home (the location) talking about lockdown rule changes (the subject) The key with any diary whether it's written or recorded is both quantity and quality. Record often – I make three entries a day on average – and – for added emphasis – keep what you record safe. The more you add to it, the more valuble it becomes to your future-self (or whoever you might be making your diary for). If audio isn't your thing, I've also written a post on how to keep a written diary too which you can read at /journal.

If you enjoy this podcast, consider buying me a coffee: https://adamstoner.com/support Everyone has their trade. Everyone needs their tools. I'm one of those arty-farty media types that calls themselves a creative. These are my tools – and as with everything on this website, I don't get paid, accept things for free, or use referral links to earn a commission on anything on this domain. Everything here is an honest recommendation, mentioned because I love their product(s) and think you would get some value from them also. Creative tools Adobe Creative Cloud Ask any creative what software is imperative to their work and Adobe Creative Cloud will be top of their list, period. There's not much worth quibbling about here – everyone uses these tools and for good reason: they're brilliant. I predominantly use Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. Avid Pro Tools Pro Tools is an advanced, industry standard audio editing software. If you're proficient in Pro Tools you're probably proficient in anything. Pro Tools is what I trained with throughout my Radio Production degree and what I continue to use almost six years later. I edit my podcast and lots of audio for a range of people using it! Codepen Codepen is a playground for building and testing front-end code. It supports HTML, CSS, and Javascript and has supported the development of pretty much all of the web projects I've made. It's a great way to get something down, play with it, and see changes in realtime. Standard Notes Standard Notes is a multi-platform, end-to-end encrypted, zero-knowledge, cloud-hosted note taking app. If you're confused by what half of those things mean, read my 2019 post titled ‘Encryption, security, privacy' at /security. Standard Notes is my digital notebook — a bit like Evernote, Bear, or OneNote — but nobody other than me can read it. As well as day-to-day thoughts, it's also where I keep track of budgets and invoicing for freelance clients, and where I keep my personal journal. It's also where I wrote this blog post before sharing it via the next item on this list… Ghost Ghost is the open-source Content Management System (CMS) developed and maintained by the not-for-profit, can't-be-sold Ghost Foundation. It's what this website is entirely powered by. They host it for just $36 a month. It's a powerful alternative to Wordpress without the bloatware, plugins, or godforsaken PHP. Podcast.co I've used many podcast providers in my time but Podcast.co beat the rest. They don't offer some of the more powerful features that enterprise giants like Omny Studio have – things like dynamic ad insertion – but Podcast.co does do everything a personal podcaster needs, with fantastic support staff and a gorgeous interface to boot. File management tools Dropshare Dropshare is an unsung hero. I use Dropshare to share files among friends and freelance clients. It's the final link (quite literally) in getting my paid-for creations to the people who need to see them. It's a great replacement for WeTransfer (hosted on platforms you control) with support for custom URLs, personal landing pages, and simple security features. CloudMounter CloudMounter is a great app for using cloud based services as if they were external hard drives. I use it for Dropbox, Backblaze B2, and Google Drive. It's great for managing client assets and for saving back-ups of your work to the cloud. Backblaze On the subject of back-ups, you better have some. Backblaze is a one-click solution for entire computer backups. It indiscriminately uploads everything from your machine to the cloud with support for one-year version history and more. It's a good belt-and-braces approach to keeping your files safe. I use Backblaze B2, their low-cost cloud archive option, to keep and store files I'm finished with. Time and project management tools Mail Yeah, Apple's default email client. I just want something to send and read messages and Mail is that thing. Stop overthinking email. Actions and Timepage I've used nearly every to-do list app there is and Actions, built by Moleskine Studio, is the best. Timepage is their calendar app. I use both to track my time and manage both personal and work projects. Vitally, they work seamlessly with each other and I can access Actions on my desktop. What are your tools? The processes behind the work people do sometimes fascinates me more than the work itself. Tell me what tools you use – or tools that you think I might like – by emailing me@adamstoner.com or by tweeting me – I'm @admstnr.

On Geektown Radio this week it's another special edition, due to Dave being away on a super-secret set visit, so we have interviews with two of Hollywood's top Production Designers - Seth Reed and Erik Carlson. We first interviewed Seth Reed last year, where we chatted about his work on 'Supergirl', designing the world of 'The Expanse', and building just about everything in the brilliant 'Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey'. His latest job sees him return to a much more earthly plane as he tackles the monumental task of recreating Bagdad in Texas for National Geographic's 'The Long Road Home'.Based on the New York Times best-selling book by internationally acclaimed journalist Martha Raddatz, The Long Road Home tells the story of the 4th April 2004, when a small platoon of soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas, was ferociously ambushed in the teeming, maze-like Baghdad suburb of Sadr City - a day that would come to be known in US military annals as “Black Sunday.” To recreate the events surrounding that day, Seth and his team built the largest standing set in North America, creating and modifying over 113 structures on a 12 acre set at a military base in Texas. Seth talks about this incredible feat of production design, about working with the actual soldiers involved in the incident, and how the process helped those veterans. Erik Carlson has been involved in a number of other incredible shows and movies throughout his career including 'Desperate Housewives', which earned him two Emmy nominations and an Art Director’s Guild Award nomination, 'Episodes', Chris Nolan’s 'Memento', the brilliant 'Team America', and is currently working on History's Navy SEALs drama 'SIX'. His other most recent work is Discovery's 'Manhunt: Unabomber', starring Sam Worthington as FBI agent Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald and Paul Bettany as Ted Kaczynski, aka the Unabomber. For those that don’t know your US history, Kaczynski mailed or hand-delivered a series of increasingly sophisticated bombs between 1978 and 1995, and was incredibly careful not to leave clues or fingerprints, making it extremely hard for the FBI to track him down. He was eventually caught hiding out in a wood cabin. The cabin and its contents had to be painstakingly recreated for the show by Erik and his team, and he talks about how vital it was to make sure every little detail was totally accurate. According to Rhys, there's never been a better time for radio. But if you want to get involved, make sure you have the skills you need – which include shooting and editing both audio and video, coming up with ideas and using social media.

Like so many other radiophiles, I was inspired to get into the medium by the work of great independent producers like the Kitchen Sisters—Nikki Silva and Davia Nelson. So it was really nice to finally sit down with Nikki and learn about her own radio beginnings. We listened to some of the earliest and still-cool Kitchen Sisters recordings ("Rattlesnakes," "The Road Ranger" and "Ernie Morgan, World Champion One-Handed Pool Player") and discussed the latest evolution of their work: "The Hidden World of Girls, Stories For Orchestra." Adapted from their "Hidden World of Girls" radio series, the new orchestral/multimedia production premieres at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music on July 28 and 29. Listening to Nikki talk, you can hear one of the essential ingredients in the Kitchen Sisters' success: a lot of passion and a lot of heart.

We explore the changing sound of radio documentaries (and changing ideas of realism)--from the work of Norman Corwin in the 1940s to This American Life and Radiolab today--with John Biewen of Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies. He's the editor of "Reality Radio: Telling True Stories in Sound," a book of essays by great radio producers.

This is a radio show I did for my Radio Production class this semester. It was my first attempt ever and I think it was ok for a first time. On the show we had a call from Danny Archer in Australia, and talked a little with Nannette Wiskur along with great songs from Benny Hester, Wayne Watson, Steve Green, and many more!
