As creative thinkers and entrepreneurs, we create tools and products because we, ourselves, need to work on something. For Canadian entrepreneur superstar, Alex Ikonn, co-founder of Intelligent Change and creator of the best-selling Five Minute Journal and Productivity Planner, gratitude was his Achilles heel. When Alex, who had a challenging childhood and at times had felt like a victim of his circumstances, learned the power of gratitude, it shifted his whole life. If you have scarcity in your life of some sort, whether it be from things that are happening in your family, or in your career, or relationships, you can get into that trap of saying, "Why me?" When Alex had that first huge realization that you are planting seeds to your reality with your everyday thoughts and that what you focus on, you cultivate and create in your life, everything changed for him. He learned that if you want to make any difference in your life, you have to take responsibility. This led him to create tools like the Five Minute Journal that could act like “toothbrushes for the mind” and help people build new, healthy habits through a daily routine of being grateful that catapults them on a new life trajectory through changing their mindset. No one can make you unhappy. Once you take responsibility in your life, there is power in this. If you take care of that one being that you can be responsible for – YOU – you're making such a big change because it's going to be a ripple effect and you're going to inspire others. In this episode, Alex Ikonn shares his personal journey and it demonstrates how one truly simple question, asked once per day, can make a massive, fundamental difference in your life. In this episode, we talk to Alex Ikonn, Co-Founder at Intelligent Change, where he's building products like the five-minute journal to boost happiness and increase productivity.Alex talks a lot about gratitude, and the positive impact it can have. What better way to start than asking him what he's grateful for, and walking through how he's incorporated that philosophy into the Five Minute Journal. Next, we launch into another topic Alex is passionate about—mindset. He talks about the difference between having a fixed vs. growth, and how he's incorporated that into the productivity planner.Did you know that his favorite movie is Wallstreet. That's right. He didn't turn into Gordon Gekko, but he did have a side hustle that got him fired from a Canadian Bank. It turned out ok, though. Him and his wife, Mimi (another co-founder), went from unemployment to launching Luxy Hair, a company that successfully exited in 2018 with 250K customers in 165 countries. He goes on to talk about that experience—everything from creating value for customers in the early days to hiring and exiting. He also talks about another brand he's launch called Love Hair. He talks about the differences between that and Luxy, and shares that he's looking for someone to join as a senior leader, possibly even to take over the management of the whole thing. If you're interested, connect with him at alex@dreamcreate.itAlex mentioned a couple books on this episode. Hello our beautiful friends! Today we have a very interesting conversation with Jake Kassan, a young passionate Californian entrepreneur who co-founded a very successful and internationally loved brand – MVMT Watches. Since early age, Jake was passionate about living the life of financial freedom. Today, he tells us his unique entrepreneurial journey and shares his business lessons. Full show notes: https://www.ikonns.com/podcast/62 Jake's father was an entrepreneur – and it made him eager to learn how to make money. At the age of 10, Jake already knew he wanted to be successful and live the life where money couldn't dictate him what he needed to do. That's why Jake started his entrepreneurial journey so young. “School system is designed not to make you an entrepreneur, but to make you an employee.” – Alex Ikonn When Jake was 12 years old, he sold the lollipops and made between $300 and $400 in a couple weeks. At the age of 17, Jake launched his first business selling novelty T-shirts that included a microphone and lights, definitely a hit at night-club party scene in California. He then started an e-commerce business, NiteLifeDesigns.com, which he promoted successfully by making YouTube videos. At its peak, Nite Life Designs made $10,000 a week. Jake dropped out of college when he was 19. Together with Kramer LaPlante, two brimming entrepreneurs launched MVMT Watches in June of 2013 with $300,000 they raised through two Indiegogo crowdfunding campaigns. Soon the Los Angeles-based start-up evolved into a huge success. And Jake did expect that success, because he believed in their product. “My life philosophy is better to try and explore opportunities than look back and regret” – Jake Kassan Navigating towards the right way using innovative marketing strategies and data driven thinking, MVMT quickly established itself as a lifestyle watch microbrand with a powerful online presence. Jake and Kramer were able to found a niche by advertising their product heavily on social media. In 2018, Movado Group (also known for selling Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss) purchased the company for $100 million. Before MVMT Watches launched, Jake was a 21 year old college dropout with more than $20,000 worth of debt to his name from previous business ventures. By achieving intense success he always wanted to achieve, Jake demonstrates –once again– that regardless of age, financials, circumstances, and even regardless of formal education, hard work, determination and strong belief always pays off, as long as you continue the hustle and are able to enjoy the process. Here are some tips to young entrepreneurs starting out right now: Try new things, and even if you fail, you can always learn from that. Before starting your own business, try to find a job or mentors who work in the industry you want to get into. In the early stages, you can find a place to work that you really believe in, where you can feel fulfilled by building something with a team. Talk to people –like CEOs, early employees, entrepreneurs, inspirational leaders– and learn from them. Educate yourself: there is so much information you can find useful. Decide why do you want to become an entrepreneur. Hope you enjoyed this week's episode with Jake, you can find out more about him here: Jake's Instagram Jake's Website
Hello our beautiful friends! We are back with another exciting Ask Me Anything episode. This time, we discuss something that most of us don't want to face – our internet addiction. Let's admit this - there is something about new technologies, the Internet and social media that makes us feel connected with the rest of the world. The issue is, if we overdo it, we become addicted and can injure ourselves. In this conversation, we share our tips on how to consume social media mindfully. Full show notes: https://www.ikonns.com/podcast/61 In today's ‘Ask Me Anything' episode, we're going to answer these 3 fundamental questions: Are there any boundaries on the Internet? How to use technology and not to be used by it? How to consume content in social media? Are there any boundaries on the Internet? Nowadays there is an infinite amount of content and, therefore, scrolling has become infinite. The way social media tools are designed, Alex explains, is to get us hooked, because the more time we spend on social media, the more money these social platforms gain, because they capture our attention, and attention equals money. And this is the currency we all play with – attention. How to use technology and not to be used by it? Alex's recommendation is to set limits for yourself. iOS programs like Screen Time help monitor how you consume your gadget and be aware of how you spend your time. You can even set parental control on yourself and set time limits on using different apps with Downtime feature. Alex assures that the best way you do your best work is by not multitasking. He suggests to turn off distracting notifications and do just one thing at a time. “We have to look at the root cause of why we are addicted to being distracted from our reality” – Alex Ikonn Alex thinks that a lot of as pass out because of the loneliness in some way or another. In order to change this, we need to follow these steps: Become aware Take responsibility Take action How to consume content in social media? Mimi believes that we have to be mindful about the fact that social media consumption is like food consumption. We have to become mindful consumers, we have to limit ourselves and care about the quality versus the quantity. Mimi explains that we should come at the first place, and the consumption of social media and content creation come after. The resistance voice make us doing all indulgences that, over a period of time, are going to ruin our lives and will make us be incapable to do things that truly matter. Both Alex and Mimi believe there is a lot of value that comes with the Internet. Social media in itself isn't evil, it can be so positive and beneficial. But, in order to create some healthy boundaries, we all need to learn how to curate people and content we consume on a daily basis. “We need to implement mindful consumption of individuals that inspire us rather than individuals that make us compare ourselves to others” – Mimi Ikonn
Alex is the co-founder of Intelligent change that created the Five Minute Journal and Productivity Planner. Over 500,000 copies of the Five-Minute Journal has been sold The creator of Luxy Hair which has over 3.2M subscribers on Youtube Angel investor in Calm, June and Tradesy In this episode Alex shares with us how he began his journey as an entrepreneur How important is it to truly embrace pain? Hello our beautiful friends! We are back with a very interesting topic, as we discuss something we all should talk more about because it is an essential part of our life – aging. Normally, the society doesn't look positively at aging, but in today's episode we're going to discuss how to deal and embrace the fact that we all are going to age, and age gracefully. Full show notes: https://www.ikonns.com/podcast/58 This episode is inspired by one of the questions you sent us over Ask Us Anything. And the question was, how do we embrace our beauty as we age? We all consume a lot of social media and are exposed to beautiful, inspiring, successful and young people, and for that reason we couldn't help but compare ourselves to them and care so much about how we look. It's been proven statistically that we're more attracted to younger personalities – even fashion magazines and marketing campaigns put a spotlight on the young models. Somehow, all humans are obsessed with youth. When we observe people on a public eye, we tend to notice that a lot of them are trying to reverse their aging by getting botox, fillers and a lot of plastic surgery, in a way, that they deny the fact that what is happening with them is real. Mimi believes that's totally up to us to carry ourselves differently and to spread wisdom as we age to a younger generations. And this message is the following: there is so much beauty beyond the superficial things. “It's important to embrace aging with grace and beauty, and not focus on the fine lines, but on what's inside” – Mimi Ikonn Mimi walks us through her personal awareness of how she has faced and embraced the fact that she is getting older. This is quite a personal and intimate story, but Mimi believes that you can resonate with her thoughts in one way or another. Mimi is a natural beauty advocate, but she wants to make sure that she has absolutely zero judgment towards people who get plastic surgery, bottom, fillers and anything else done. As her favourite quote goes, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Before deciding whether she needed to get fillers in her smile lines or not, Mimi was doing a lot of inner work and asked herself if she really wanted to do it and why she needed that. And the answer was always the same: insecurity. “We, women, think we are not good enough, so we need to do this, because we are not loving ourselves the way we are right now, consequently, we are not perfect”, Mimi explains. “If you do something with yourself because you are not good enough, not beautiful, not perfect this way, then by doing this you won't help yourself, because then you'll need more injections and corrections. It's quite obsessive” – Mimi Ikonn Long story short, Mimi accepted herself the way she is. Mimi is all about self-love and taking care of herself. She believes we can take a look at the alternatives that can help us preserve our youth and help us age gracefully. This is there Mimi is leaning toward herself as a woman in her early thirties. Mimi is sure there is no magic pill, and anything that sounds too good to be true is usually too good to be true. Let's face the truth: the reality is unavoidable. And it's better to embrace the aging, because the moment we fight something is the moment we actually suffer. The more we're going to change ourselves superficially, the more we aren't going to accept ourselves and will try to change more things. This will end up in a waste of energy and time. Mimi is sure that the choices we make on ourselves are inspired by our self-awareness, will power and belief system. “Going back to us as humans, the reason we are here is to procreate,'' Alex reminds. This is a deep subconscious code that makes us more valuable. And, in reality, we are still those simple creatures. However, with the awareness, we can go beyond that and decide for ourselves that we aren't defined only by that. We are at the point of life when we can create our own meaning in life. “At the end of the day, what will really help you move gracefully through life is these fundamentals of meaning, purpose and delivering value to the world and outside yourself” – Alex Ikonn The way we can move beyond the superficiality of aging is of understating what is our deeper purpose and what is our deeper meaning as a human being. This is what will light us up inside and give us that grace. When we focus on superficiality, we make it your purpose; and the moment we can move beyond it and create a higher purpose and meaning for ourselves, we will be able to make the choices aligned with our values. Both Mimi and Alex are sure that there is so much beauty in this world – like spark of the joy that comes through the person's eyes. This is something we should challenge ourselves to see more: the deeper beauty. The moment we embrace the beauty in ourselves, we will be able to see this beauty in others. “Because what you judge in other people is what you judge in yourself”, Mimi sums up.
This episode is a very interesting, unusual and deep experience, as we have a very special guests today, Tata and Marina from Mayan Elders. We have collected the most inspiring and sparkling insights from our conversation – such as facing death, facing fears, connecting to our inner child and living with love and peace. So, let's get into it. This episode is full of ancient wisdom and the ultimate trut. No matter who we are, how old we are, death is something we can't escape – everyone will face it. And the beauty of this subject, the beauty of life is that you need both. Life is so special because death exists. We also talked about gratitude and why this is one of the most important aspects of our lives. Our friend Lazo Freeman introduced us to Mayan Elders and they came with Tommy, one of their students and translator. Tommy was the conduit in this deep conversation, as we discussed a very uncomfortable topic – death. Our relationship with death is what we learn from our culture, so let's dive into this mystery and learn some wisdom from other cultures and see the other perspective that we need to value more. “Open your mind towards other nations and cultures – there is so much wisdom” – Alex Ikonn Why death is the transformation of spirit? The Mayan ancestors knew that they had to die. But death for them wasn't the end, the punishment. The day they died, the body and the spirit were being separated, the spirit was being reincarnated and found another body for another life. And life continued. Mayan Elders believe that the body is born here, it grows here and here it finishes its mission. From Mayan's cosmovision, death is one of the very important energies. That's why they believe that death is nothing more than a physical change, transmutation of the spirit that, once separated from the body, keeps moving on and doesn't die. For Mayans, the spirit isn't gone, the spirit is transformed into your light, into your guide, into your starts and will take care of you. “Today we need to eliminate this fear out of our heads, because not to have doubts means not to be worried, so we will be living in a happy life and will be happy with everything. When we are worried, it makes us sick, and sickness kills us. So, there would be a good life for all humanity if we could eliminate fear and live in peace, harmony and love” – Mayan Elders Why spirit and body have to walk together? In Mayan's culture, death is the duality of life. Everything is double: there exists day and night, there is a woman and man, so there exists death and life. But physical death isn't the actual death, because often we are alive, but are dead inside. That's why Mayan Elders teach that spirit and body have to walk together. We can be alive, but if we aren't walking together with our soul, then there is a disconnection in duality of our spirit and body. Then there is fear and doubts, sickness and depression. That's why death is a transformation – it's the change, the separation. Why do we fear death? Religion taught us that after death, our soul goes to a place where it gets purified and cleaned, the paradise. For the Mayan Elders, the paradise is here, in this life, so we have to live in peace and harmony. Inside their cosmovision, gratitude is the answer to how to live this life to the fullest and be connected to our own spirit. When we are grateful for what we have in our lives, when we are thankful for another breath of life in the morning, for everything that surrounds us, when we show and actually have this respect and gratitude, then we are connected to our spirit. “When we don't have all those fears that society or religion want to put over us, we understand that the paradise and hell are right here, on the Earth, and we create them by being connected to or disconnected from our spirit” – Mayan Elders Why there is a disconnection? Tommy shared a very interesting example – when we pray, we keep asking for something. And when we have it, we don't even notice that and don't show enough respect and appreciation. The reason there is a disconnection is because we have experienced a shocking experience, an accident, a deep suffer or fear. We surround ourselves with pain, depression, fear, anxiety, sickness, and disconnect from our inner child, losing the perspective of love, harmony and gratitude. That's why the Mayan Elders believe that, basically, the disconnection comes because of our own disconnection from gratitude. When we manage to do this reconnection, it all comes back. Where the fear comes from? Fear is like a shadow for humanity, they believe. We have to search for the root of our fear and our vicious circle. Very often it comes from mother's womb, when mother had a deep fear or a spiritual disconnection, then this fear comes to the child as well. We can go to any kind of psychologist and treatments, but if we don't have this connection, then the fear comes back. The Mayan ancestors have a ceremony of healing and negotiation with the spirit of fear, but the healing itself is in finding and identifying the root of the fear, they believe. “Gratitude is our tool to solve all the problems” – Alex Ikonn What are the suggestions for people to reconnect with themselves? You make a meditation and try to answer why you have some physical or emotional disconnection. You have to start working with your inner child. When your spirit is searching for body, this is the moment when you feel loneliness and a lot of sensitivity, and you feel like you're crying. It's important to go deep with yourself, in your thoughts, and come to your inner child and ask him or her to come back. “We want peace for humanity. The lesson we want to share with this world doesn't come from books, it comes from our wisdom, knowledge, experience and spirituality” – Mayan Elders For Mayans, the brain is the nest of the spirit, and heart is the throne of the spirit, and the spirit is God and it moves them. The Mayan communities are walking around the world and delivering the message of peace, unity, equality and love. They don't speak about God, they speak with him. And Dios – God from Spanish – means ‘Thank you' in their language. Right now Mayan Elders are planning to start a crowdfunding project to raise funds for creating a bridge between the Mayan world and the modern world. 22 different tribes will come together and will share their wisdom of life in one book and give it to humanity, to help people understand themselves better and bring all the knowledge that was damaged throughout the time. If you would like to support Mayan Elders, email Tommy directly: harevismusic@gmail.com Here is what else we have discussed: How death can make us be aware and appreciate life The importance of reconnecting with this planet Earth and with ourselves Life with love and peace Why we should reframe our fears The reason we are disconnected from our inner child Life in Mayan tribes Find the books and movies we mentioned in this episode here: Movie Coco Audiobook Fear: Essential Wisdom for Getting Through the Storm by Thich Nhat Hanh The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel Van der Kolk MD
Travelling, building new relationships, getting a new job, giving and honest feedback or speaking in public — all these situations require you to go outside your comfort zone. And here is the dilemma: one part of us wants to stick to our comfort zone, while the other part strives to face challenges, have unique genuine experience and grow. And, as Seth Godin explains this, our lizard brain – the primal part of us – wants us to stay safe and keeps us far away from any changes. There is a relationship that we need to have with ourselves, Alex believes. And by that he means the understanding that, by nature, we are all designed to seek comfort, because our lizard brain wants us to be safe and not to die. However, with this thinking, we will never actually experience anything in life. And let's be real: a lot of people prefer to stay in the comfort zone. And the reason some of us don't get that job promotion, or the reason we aren't in a relationship with the person of our dreams or we don't experience what we want to experience in life is simply because we are in a comfort zone. “The most oldest part of our brain – the lizard brain or the primal brain – protects us from changes and strives for our safety. That's why it's so important to be aware of that part of ourselves that wants us to stay safe and survive. We don't have to deny it, we have to understand it and learn more about it, so that we can be aware of what actually holds us back” – Alex Ikonn Coming from the background of immigrants moving to Canada, Mimi and Alex started everything from scratch. And all the adversities they have faced allowed them to build strong and beautiful relationships, be here today where they are, do what they love and live the life they have always dreamt about. That's why the Ikonns family believes – and knows it for sure – the feeling of discomfort is normal. Actually, it is the signal of growth. “Depending on how you interact on this discomfort,'' Alex explains, “it will go one place or another”. We must be aware that we can't expect growth without discomfort. So, it's also about reframing our relationship with what that feeling is. If we give up in power of the resistance voice that holds us back, then how do we expect to grow, prosper and change? Alex mentions the great example of working out. When we exercise, we build our body by tearing our muscles apart. And the reason we become stronger is that our muscles tissues will then repair and rebuild and become stronger. First we make them uncomfortable, then we tear them apart, and when we work out enough, we then create that growth. So, that's why Alex is sure that feeling discomfort means getting stronger is the very basic law of nature. “Life is always changing, pushing you to grow and step into new stages of your life. The moment you shy away from that is the moment you stop growing” – Mimi Ikonn Have you ever asked yourself the question of why so many people struggle with the idea of how to grow their relationships and careers? The reality is simple: in order to have a better life, we will have to face the challenges and the discomfort, and go through them. And one of the most important things to keep in mind is to always be honest one with another in relationships and face challenges together, and not be afraid to talk through what you think or feel. The reason so many marriages and friendships fall apart is because with the time the parties just stop talking to each other and they don't actually want to bring some certain things up. But, here is a great reminder: we will not be able to grow in our relationship unless we will be able to face challenging situations together. When we are able to do emotional work by truly listening, opening up, giving each other enough space, being vulnerable and accepting our own fault, we will defuse the conflict and have that massive opportunity to build a stronger bond. “So many family relationships, friendships, marriages come to the point then someone just don't want to face the challenge. Unless both parts are ready to work with this, be honest and open, they cannot experience growth” – Alex Ikonn Alex believes that life throws us in challenges, because it wants us to teach a lesson. That's why we also have to be open to the adversity. The moment we bring that awareness of discomfort, it's really the moment for us to see how we can make the best of it and what we can learn. We are our own habits, we build them every day. So, in any situation of growth, we will face discomfort. By focusing on it and seeing it as a real opportunity, we will build this healthy habit of getting outside our comfort zone and become a little better. And another kind reminder: the reason we are here is not to hide, is to live. Here is what else we have talked about: How being courageous in all areas of our life helps us face challenges and become better The consequences of staying in a comfort zone and not taking responsibility for our choices The power of facing reality of life and discomfort How giving a feedback creates an opportunity to have deeper, stronger, fulfilling and beautiful relationships How giving more freedom to your children will help them become stronger Power of placebo energy Books we have mentioned in this episode: Linchpin - Are you indispensable? by Seth Godin Do the Work by Steven Pressfield https://www.ikonns.com/podcast/53

In todays episode, Alex and Mimi discuss what it means to go deep both with yourself and others and how doing so can enrich your relationships. When facing challenges and conflicts throughout our lives, we have a choice, do we stay in the comfort and familiarity of the shallows or do we go out and explore the depths and face the challenges that can help us evolve? “The true wealth and gifts lie in the depths of our soul and the souls of other people that we come across” – Mimi Ikonn Admittedly an extrovert, Mimi discusses the challenges she faced at a silent meditation retreat and how facing her fear of listening to the heart led to an important lesson. Alex discusses the significance of maintaining the ability to self reflect in an age of social media and instant gratification. “The moments of nothing are where you actually have that space to reflect and get to know yourself a little deeper” – Alex Ikonn Placing honesty over the guarantee of happiness can lead to a healthier relationship, and whilst this honesty may be upsetting or challenging at first, transparency can be an important communicative tool that helps us avoid a build up of negative feelings towards each other over time. We all have our different paths in life but one thing that we all have in common is having to face challenges along the way. Building healthy and fulfilling relationships can be difficult at times, but those that are built on core principles of honesty and vulnerability can help them stand the test of time! Here's what else we discuss today: Two steps to a meaningful relationship The fear of loss and how it can stop people from evolving How social media provides shots of dopamine comparative to gambling Not being afraid to ruffle some feathers Conflict can be a wake up call and gift in building your relationships You never stop learning Social media can be a helpful tool for discourse We would love to hear from you! As parents, seeing Alexa grow and develop so quickly, like others Alex and Mimi have seen the true magnitude of change. But to some people, change isn't always welcomed so easily, some people fear change. Change can be a huge deal. This is the topic of today's episode. For the most part we don't remember our early lives, but it's in those moments seeing a baby grow into a child and develop a character and soul of their own, that you can truly appreciate how change is happening. Much faster than you could ever imagine. “A lot of people leave comments on our videos, saying please don't change… like that's a bad thing” - Mimi Ikonn [4:00] In meeting with an old friend Mimi asked ‘so what's new'? She was shocked at the reply she was given ‘oh, nothing new'. Maybe for some of us we aren't mindful that change is happening all the time, whether we perceive it or not, But things change, ALL THE TIME. Change can be a good thing, but a lot of us naturally fear it. When we know change is coming it's like being confronted with the flip of a coin. Will it land on the good side or the bad? So many chose to not flip the coin, avoid it as much as possible, staying right where they are. Safe and sound. In their comfort bubble. “Paint a picture of where you're going and know your journey, give yourself a roadmap to your goals” - Alex Ikonn [16:35] Again it's about reframing. Change could be giving yourself a chance at a new career and finding a new passion. Others might say ‘I got fired and lost my job'. Which in Alex's case, is true, this actually happened. Proof of the importance of embracing change. He was so happy to be working in banking and would have probably stayed there forever had he not been fired. Lucky that wasn't to be and life forced his hand and he got to choose a better life. Understandably there are evolutionary reasons and our trible nature at play here, that we need to be aware of. Also the story we tell ourselves keeps us firmly rooted to the spot. Think about how many times you've said out loud ‘oh, i just don't do that' or ‘oh that is not me'? While often having never tried. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us” - Marianne Williamson. The process of transformation and trying something new is DIFFICULT, unfortunately it's a challenge that a lot of people aren't willing to work through by choice. After returning from their first trip to france, Mimi realised this. She set about completely renovating their home. Days and weeks of living in the mess reflected her own internal struggles at the time with mental health issues she was going through. renovating wasn't going to be easily fixed in 1 day. Fortunately hard work and persistence paid off and the apartment looked as beautiful as she'd imagined. Eventually all the internal mentality hard work also paid off too. Remember not all change happens quickly and is usually a work in progress. Here's what we talk about today: From getting your heart broken to losing your job, there's always a brighter side. Embrace change, use it to your advantage The only way to enjoy life is to not fear the change that is always happening Change at the speed of light, like Moores law, everything is getting quicker Be perceptive and mindful of what changes are happening around you People's capacity to grow and adapt is one of life's remarkable wonders Getting to the good is often through a VERY MESSY journey How to stop creating comfortable habits of staying the same Journalling, creating your goals and a road map to them Change leads to a better stronger you Full show notes: https://www.ikonns.com/podcast/episode29
In today's episode Alex and Mimi explore what many would say is the most important thing in life... MONEY!! But does having more of it make you happy or do we just need to create an abundance mindset? What's your relationship with money, we'll find out in this episode. Both Alex and Mimi have come from very poor upbringings. Even though Mimi would describe her family growing up as middle class, the middle class Azerbaijan is way below the lower class in the US or Europe. Alex's family life was very similar growing up in the Soviet Union, they both lived in 1 bedroom apartments where their parents would sleep on the sofa, while all the kids would share a bedroom. Bargain hunting and penny counting was the only way to simply put a meal on the table. This is a very deep episode that explores the mindset shift that you have to undertake if you want to go from not having any money to what to do when you finally get some. And every step in between. Foodbank's to Kensington. “Money wants to go to people who have a need to do something with it, people who put their money to work rather than consuming” - Alex Ikonn [37:30] The main lesson Alex and Mimi want you to take away from this, is moving your mindset from one of scarcity to one of abundance. We all know of situations where people have lost friends or even family member from a dispute over a relatively small amount of cash. Clinging onto every penny won't get you anywhere in life. Similarly, we know that when we feel full and our basic needs are met, our mental energy and focus is available to be put to work and attract more money and opportunities into our lives. Now this doesn't mean you should go out and max your credit cards, if you even have a credit card, nor should even contemplate a payday loan. Negative compound interest is your worst enemy and will hold you in debt for a long time. Remember that spending future money is still money you will have to earn at some point. If you can't pay it back today, there's a good chance you'll find it difficult to pay it back tomorrow. The good thing is compound interest works the other way too. So paying off your debt and then saving can gain you some great interest over time. “You affirm and reaffirm to yourself everyday what you manifest” - Mimi Ikonn [20:50] Back to the abundance part… this really is a game of reframing the conversation you tell yourself. Are you regularly saying: A - ‘I couldn't ever do that, I can't afford it' Or are you saying B - ‘I choose to invest my money elsewhere, spending to fulfill a specific purpose'. Are you saying you are ‘broke'? This genuinely means you feel you are broken. Let's be clear, we don't believe you are broken! You should be saying ‘You are working on fixing your financial future by actionally taking steps in the right direction'. Do you see and feel the difference in these two ways of talking to yourself? If so this is only the start. What we also cover in this episode: How do your parents talk about money? This shapes your own financial values Don't believe you're saving if at the same time you're in debt Valuing your own worth and developing the idea of feeling full How to not lose relationships over money When is it a good time to rent or buy, why it's better to rent in a big city How the richest people are less consumers than you think Become an investor in yourself and reap the rewards Visualisation and putting in the hard work Being wealthy is living in your means and not spending more than you earn Money and energy, it's all about a transfer from one form to the other. Fresh off the plane, in today's episode Alex and Mimi chat about their observations, having just spent 3 weeks in North America. What are the main differences between North America Vs. Europe. “Americans take ice cream soooo seriously, how do you even choose?” - Mimi Ikonn - 22:00 The USA is the land of plenty, everything is BIGGER! There is more of EVERYTHING. From credit cards to what's on your plate, either in a restaurant or baked at home in a tiny oven. Alex chats about a friend who moved from London to California, just so his Billion Dollar dream could be recognised. Meanwhile, Mimi gets chatted up in the supermarket over what breakfast cereal does she like. “The cities in Europe are designed in a way to get you walking, to move, to be active and mindful” - Alex Ikonn - 18:47 Having travelled to many places and lived on both sides of the Atlantic, Mimi and Alex have great insight into just how different the 2 cultures can be. Here's what they get into; How people spend their money, which culture has the most consumer driven society? Do you have a billionaire mindset or are you being conservative with your cash? Where do Alex and Mimi get approached the most? Who speaks the loudest, who is most respectful? Public transport Vs owning a car. Food portions, even a salad in the US is enough to feed an entire family. What's in your kitchen? We want some Patatas Bravas! Yum! How to notice disruptive industries when you realise something is missing in a culture? The empowerment of youth through social media. We didn't want this episode to be political so please, don't take offence if you live in one of these countries. We haven't meant to choose a favourite here, since we love both - EQUALLY! These are just some generalised observations from spending a lot of time in both places. “I like to find differences, it gives color to life, as long as people live in peace and harmony” Mimi Ikonn - 33:30 Actually, we know there's something for everyone in both places, but it's not until you explore the world that you really see for yourself where YOU fit in. We really encourage you to travel and see the world for yourself, maybe your expectations and realisations will be completely different to ours but you only know if you go find out. In this episode Alex and Mimi do a deep dive into perfectionism. When is it good... or bad to be aiming for PERFECT. Mimi finds that perfectionism, at least for creative people like herself, can hold her back. Forcing her to shelve projects she's worked on, but are not good enough (...in her own mind)! Alex argues the opposite. That it's that very same desire to do better that spurs genuine excellence. The need to push through those moments when you wish to give in, often lead to a much better quality outcome. Mimi agrees. She even feels she's had to work twice as hard because she didn't feel exceptional at times. “People say why are you improving on things that already work - Well, i completely respect those that do, because they are the ones pushing boundaries” - Alex Ikonn Mimi explores her own past and looks into how labels imprinted on young people have an effect later in life, with a need to live up to those superimposed titles. She shares one of her favourite books on the subject of Fixed Vs. Growth Mindset By Carol Dweck. They then go deeper with a concept from a favourite book - Linchpin by Seth Godin. Perfectionism is a very ‘Lizzard-Brain' part of our evolutionary biology. It's one of our innate survival techniques, it's imperative we avoid being ostracised or thrown out of our social group that we depend on. It's this very concept the holds back from sharing when we feel things aren't perfect. “Screw it - Ship it - At some point you need to just get it out there” - Mimi Ikonn There's always going to be a gap between your starting skills and where you will end up, if you just keep creating. When you're young your work isn't the best. As you mature you grow taste and your work gets better. Alex shares a great video on the subject by Ira Glass. Instead of asking ‘does the publisher agree with this', ‘what will people say?' Just live by your own standard and then get it out there. The more you can move on to the next thing, the more you can develop taste and learn as you go. “I built so many crap websites before i built a good one” - Alex Ikonn Mimi shares one more book for your reading list Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, where a few choice words of what to spread on your sandwich... and then eating it, will surely get you pushing through your moments of doubt when perfectionism strikes. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll see me post a few times a week (though not every day like Alex!) on Instagram Stories of my Productivity Planner (something I highly recommend for everyone and get at least a few requests a week for what planner I use). Jay is committed to helping creators and messengers get their message out to the world in a bigger way. He is the host and producer of "The Inner Changemaker"; ranked as the #1 Self-Help podcast when he launched and recently named as a top 10 Business podcast for 2016 from Podcast Awards. On his show is where he interviews high-profile entrepreneurs and world-class creators on choosing legacy over currency. With interviews from people such as Bob Proctor, Alex Ikonn, Philip Mckernan, Nathan Chan and many other prominent names in the industry, it's no surprise that his podcast has risen on the podcasting charts. His journey wasn't always, this smooth, though. After being burnt out working a high-paying job in downtown Toronto, he knew he needed a change in his life. The decision for change sparked his own version of the hero's journey that left him vagabonding through Asia for a period. Since then, he has been building a global brand and a profitable online business that allows him to travel the globe and most importantly, constantly create inspiring content. http://www.theinnerchangemaker.com/
Alex is Co Founder of Intelligent Change Luxy Hair Five Minute Journal and Productivity Planner. He also runs Dreamers & Creators, a creative agency that allows me to pursue and work on new business ideas. He is fortunate enough to share all of my entrepreneurial and life activities with my lovely wife and business partner, Mimi Ikonn. They together are also angel investors and have invested in great companies like Calm, Shyp, Sprig, Tradesy, and others.
We all know how the feeling of not having accomplished what we set out to at the start of the day. Not a good feeling… quite the opposite. We even feel unproductive sometimes when we actually were productive. The reasons for this lie deep in our human psyche. We seem to be programmed to be unhappy. Good news though: There are methods to escape this negative thinking pattern. After a wonderful Part 1 with UJ Ramdas on the art of gratitude, you will learn in Part 2 why we constantly feel unproductive and how we can change that. My guest UJ Ramdas is an expert in behavioral psychology, a trained hypnotist, author, and one of the creators of the Five-Minute Journal, a gratitude journal for the daily practice of thankfulness. Together with his co-founder Alex Ikonn, he recently published their second product, the Productivtiy Planner to help you overcome procrastination and follow through on all of your projects. Enjoy another very special episode with UJ Ramdas and leave us your questions below! We hope you can put the advice to good use and become and feel more productive in your life.
Gratitude…is the counting of one’s blessings. - UJ RAMDAS The occasional pauses make me ponder if UJ Ramdas, a trained hypnotist, uses a special hypnosis method to make me pay close attention. The man thinks before he talks and the topics he covers are of great interest to anyone aiming for a happier and healthier life. I was lucky to record two episodes with UJ. In this first one, you will learn how you can use the daily practice of being grateful to become happier, healthier, and more successful. UJ Ramdas is an expert in behavioral psychology, a trained hypnotist, author, and one of the creators of the Five-Minute Journal, a gratitude journal for the daily practice of thankfulness. This conversation got really interesting as we deep dived on self-awareness and mindset. Usual topics for this podcast. But he went deeper. He broke it multiple stages for men and women and what you should do in each stage of living. It was a fascinating topic. Today we’re having our follow up episode with Alex Ikonn, an awesome vlogger and the co-founder of the popular Five Minute Journal and Luxy Hair. Earlier this month, Alex came on TLS and discussed his fascinating journey to go from the brink of juvenile detention to now living the life of his dreams just 11 […] The post TLS #120: A $250,000 Productivity Habit To get Important Stuff Done With Alex Ikonn appeared first on Jess Lively.

Alex Ikonn is a master of YouTube marketing, the co-founder and creator of hugely successful products and businesses, and a talented entrepreneur with a knack for seeing his dreams become reality. Central to Alex Ikonn's success is the simple mantra that fuels his passion for life and business: to deliver value.
Today, we are featuring Alex Ikonn on the show. Perhaps you are not familiar with his name, but I promise you are familiar with one of his companies. He co-founded Luxy Hair, 5-Min Journal (which Tim Ferriss uses) and most recently, the Productivity Planner. His wife; Mimi and him ran a YouTube channel where they have amassed over 300 million views and millions of subscribers and followers on all social media channels. Honestly, I wasn't going to release this until later on in the year, but this episode is so perfect for the New Year, I had to release it now. In the last episode, we talked with Brandi (CEO of Evelyn Iona Cosmetics and it was super tactical. Probably one of the most tactical episode I have ever done about what it really takes to start a business and how funding is essentially useless. Be sure to listen to that if you missed it. This episode is super high-level thinking. It's all about gratefulness, discovering one's purpose and self-actualization. It's also about viewing yourself as a creator. And what can happen to your life once you take responsibility of your art. As you will be able to tell from the conversation, Alex LOVES his life and he loves these topics. Of course, I get him to tell us the story of HOW in the world he got to where he is now, 7-figure business, world traveler, youtube start etc… But the underlying theme is a powerful one and one that I have been coming to grips with myself. It's not about viewing yourself as an entrepreneur or whatever label you have in mind. It's about being a creator. And we are going to show you how in this episode. Can we have a little fun today? I want to talk about fun, healthy holiday gift ideas. I'll admit right off the bat that I'm a super practical person. I have enough sweaters, candles and knick knacks. Give me something I can use! I'm always looking at what might increase my focus, motivation & desire to get healthy, stay organized, build my business or live my best life. Some people feel really motivated by new workout clothes, others by organization & simplification, others by new kitchen appliances. Know what will help you get excited to improve your health and invest in THAT this year. Coffee Death Wish Coffee Kicking Horse Coffee Grady's Cold Brew Glass straws (for weirdos like me) Immersion Blender I'm a huge fan of the immersion blender for things like bulletproof coffee, chocolate avocado mousse and mashed cauliflower. Plus, it's super portable & convenient for travel! OXO Salad Chopper I use my OXO salad chopper almost every day. I use it most often for salads. For example, if I have hardboiled eggs in my salad, using the salad chopper lets the yolks become a creamy element for the salad. Same thing with avocado or guacamole. It blends the flavors and reduces the need for dressings. I also use it for my fave breakfast dish: shredded cabbage with eggs, bacon & avocado. I love volume but I had things that are super dry. I think I'm in love with Mimi Ikonn. Oh, and also her husband Alex Ikonn. Don't want to confuse anyone! When I was a kid I didn't think I would be happy unless I was a "millionaire". Some kids in my school said they were millionaires and they would make fun of anyone who wasn't. I asked my dad what he was worth. He said $2. Maybe that scarred me so much that I always make sure to have wads of $2 bills on me at all times. A year or so later his company went bankrupt. So he wasn't worth the same anymore. In his mind, he was worth ZERO. For the rest of his life he sat in the living room, depressed, and listened to music. When he was a little boy he loved music and won an award. At some point we all return to what we loved as a child. I suppose that means I will return to comics, Judy Blume, and spying on people. A few weeks ago I met Mimi Ikonn and Alex Ikonn. I was insanely curious about them. How come? Because Mimi makes videos of herself, delivers real value to people, and then makes over a million a year because of those videos. I don't know how old Mimi is. She's much younger than me. She's much younger than my father ever was when I was alive. He would've liked to live her life. So Claudia and I asked Mimi and Alex if we could interview them. Because they seemed very happy also. The podcast comes out later today but here's the summary. This is a simple post. How to make a million. I am absolutely sure the same techniques that worked for Mimi and Alex can work for anyone. I had them lay it out step by step. A) EMOTIONS Mimi became obsessed with beauty and hair. She and Alex watched before and after videos of women who were getting hair extensions. "They seemed much happier after getting extensions," Alex said. "Whenever there are strong emotions about something you know there is an opportunity." So Mimi started making videos of herself discussing hair and beauty and hair products. "I never thought I would get more than 1,000 views," Mimi said. "But I loved doing the videos. And I wanted to share my love for the topics with as many people as possible." Now she has had a quarter of a BILLION views on her videos with 2.7 million subscribers. B) HUB AND SPOKE People ask: "How do I get traffic to my blog". Or "how do I get buyers of my book." or "How do I get people to follow me on Twitter." A lot of it is about loneliness. We sit in our house writing blog posts and then hit Publish. We want family to love them. We want friends to love them. And then we want the world to love them. I'm really just talking about myself. I know when people enjoy things I do, I feel as if I have a family. I'm happy. At least until the next post. Mimi loved making the videos but needed traffic. So they did the only two-step technique that gets traffic online for anything you want to do. Well, make it a three-step technique. 1) Love Know more, love more, express more, bleed more, than anyone else. Was Mimi the only one doing videos on beauty and hair? No. But maybe she put more passion into it. 2) Spread the Love Alex would take images and posts and links to her videos and spread them on Pinterest, Instagram, blogs, other sites and have them all point back to her YouTube channel. I call this "the Hub and Spoke" approach. Youtube was the hub, with a dozen or so spokes reaching out to popular sites that all would link back to the hub. 3) Make more Love No matter what you do - some will be good and some will be bad. Not every video or post is going to have views. So you do more. When you do more, several things happen: a. More people find you b. You rank higher on search c. You improve d. People who find you start clicking on your older videos so now they start to get more views. The "Make More Love" technique always works. Michelle Phan did 54 YouTube videos before she made a massive hit. Hugh Howey had already ten novels before he published "Wool" which became...

Michelle Phan did 54 YouTube videos before she made a massive hit. Hugh Howey had already ten novels before he published "Wool" which became a massive bestseller. Clayton Christiansen applied for NASA for 18 years in a row before they accepted him. Make more love. C) 1000 PEOPLE Note she said she only thought she was going to get 1000 viewers. The number 1000 keeps coming up with people who have HUGE audiences. Kevin Kelly wrote about this in a great post called "1000 True Fans". He writes about it kk.org. He also talks about it on my podcast. Tim Ferriss talks about how every one of his posts he makes sure he's going to deliver value to at least 1000 people. Of course he delivers much more value than that. But 1000 seems to be the right number that people who know seem to focus on. Keep focusing on delivering value for a 1000 and then they tell 2 friends and so on and next thing you know you have a quarter of a billion views, five bestsellers, movies being made about you, you go into space, your own makeup lines, and on and on and on, depending on what it is you love. D) BUY LOW, SELL HIGH Alex and Mimi noticed that many of the other beauty videos were talking about a specific brand of hair extensions for women. So they went to my favorite place in the world - the mall. "We saw these products were priced at $500," Alex said. "So then we went on Ali Baba and saw the same products being sold for $100. We then went to the manufacturers and saw we could buy directly for $50. The exact same products that were being sold for $500." They borrowed from mom. Borrowed their full amount off of their credit cards. And they placed an order. Then, I imagine (they did not tell me this) they prayed. E) SOFT SELL Mimi talks about many products on her videos. She expressed a radiant, confident personality and talks about everything she is wearing, what her habits are, what products she uses. She NEVER sells anything. But underneath the video is just a link. www.luxyhair.com. The orders came in one at a time. Then 100 at a time. They sold out of their inventory, paid everyone back, and bought more. In their very first year (2010) they had over a million in revenues. Ever since then they've had more than a million a year in profits. Never once using the words "buy this" anywhere. F) QVC-A The most successful people have a model for their success. I think that's why I enjoy Peter Thiel's "Zero to One" book so much. Or Peter Diamandis's "Bold". Or Marcus Lemonis's TV show "The Profit". Each book has a different, but very very simple, model for how to achieve success or how to judge which companies are successful. Mimi and Alex developed their own model, they stick with it, and have used this simple model to keep jumping from success to success. Alex explained it to me: Q - Quality Everything they do is quality. The cameras they use for videos ("But not overdoing it, because this is YouTube and not television," said Mimi). The setting they use and how it fits their message. The products, etc V - Value Mimi is not trying to sell anything in her videos. She explains what she does and how she does it. She does the research and believes in the products. Rather than asking, she is giving. "When you give a billion dollars in value," Alex said, "you get a billion dollars or more back." C - Consistency I read a book about television once by TV mega-executive Grant Tinker. He was Mary Tyler Moore's husband, ran NBC for awhile, and then ran MTM productions producing such shows as "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "Bon Newhart", and a dozen other super hit TV shows. I only remember one thing in the book. He said, "whenever they changed the time or date of a show, then that show would die. If you moved a show from Tuesday at 8pm to Thursday at 8:30pm then you just lost your whole audience." Mimi said, "if you are going to put out a video once a week, put it out once a week. Put it out the same day each week if you can. Don't do once a month. Don't do random. Your audience starts to anticipate and look forward to your shows and knows when to expect them." A- Authenticity Mimi only talks on the videos about what she believes in. There's no fluff. There's no pitch. She's exuberant and it shows on each video. H) LESS Mimi and Alex were working 80-100 hour weeks. They had the money in the bank. They had achieved their goals. They loved what they were doing but when you hit a lifelong goal you start to ask, "is that it?" They got depressed. Goals are a myth. Our ancestors for 200,000 years didn't have goals. Every day started from scratch: hunt, forage, eat, sex, sleep, wake up to a new day. Then we were told to find our "goals". And now everyone asks, "I'm 17 years old and feel like I've accomplished nothing in life. What should I do?" Learning to find happiness with less is true wealth. Claudia and I recently got rid of most of our belongings, for instance. Then we started cancelling most meetings that I had set up. Sometimes it was hard. I had agreed to an event and then I would cancel. Ultimately we are the sum of our experiences and not the sum of our belongings. There is nothing wrong with making money but it is only one small part of living a life of comfort, of compassion, of calm. Mimi and Alex started to focus more on the other things that were important in their lives. "And you know what happened?" Alex said. "The more we did that, the more money we made." – – – I really enjoyed talking to them. I am always curious how people made money through a channel like YouTube. Now I know and I think it can be replicated by anyone who is willing to do all of the above. I'm afraid I don't have a face for YouTube. Or Instagram. And I'm not even sure I have a face for podcasting. But I think I love doing what I do. And I like having the time to explore other interests and ideas. And then sometimes I like doing nothing at all. There's nothing wrong with that also. – – – P.S. NOT SURE WHAT TO DO WITH THE REST OF YOUR LIFE? WARNING: Before watching this episode you must throw everything you think you know about Alex Ikonn straight out the window. Yes he has the dream life, the dream wife, and the successful career. Yes his YouTube channel is full of videos like "How to Change the WORLD!" and "How to: WIN LIFE" and "How to Create Your Dream Life". But, like every successful entrepreneur that I've ever met, his journey was beset with tragedy, self-doubt, complications, mistakes, and longing for community. Don't let the pastel colours fool you. Alex has practical advice about how anyone can make money by ultimately creating value and thinking about someone else's needs before your own. If you think of any successful business throughout history, they ultimately provided a product that made their customer's lives better. Make yourself valuable and the cash will follow. This episode is not just about success in business but about what to do when you finally achieve all of those things you have wished for your entire life...and then realise you are not any happier. Ultimately Alex learned that life is one continuous growth pattern, and as soon as that stagnates then you will find yourself with a whole new set of problems. Please join me in welcoming Alex to our London Real community.
Alex Ikonn is the founder of Luxy Hair, a 7-figure ecommerce business that was built entirely through YouTube Marketing, making them one of Shopify’s Top 10 eCommerce Stores by Revenue in 2011 and 2012. Luxy Hair is a customer-centric hair extensions ecommerce retailer. The business was born when his wife Mimi was looking for hair extensions for their wedding, but wasn’t able to find what she was looking for. When they realized how hard it was to find good hair extensions, they knew they had stumbled on to a business opportunity. Alex and Mimi put up $20k, mostly on credit, to get their first supply and they haven’t looked back, posting 7-figure PROFITS annually. In addition to Luxy Hair, Alex is the co-founder of Dreamers & Creators, a marketing strategy and execution firm for the entrepreneurial enterprise, and he’s a co-founder at Intelligent Change, where they make cool products that make people happier.
