At times, words may fail you, but your intention won't. Carl Kennedy is the medicine, marvel & mastery your Actor & Humxn so desperately need right now. Grab a journal, a pen & set some precious time aside for YourSelf & Your Artist. Cuz if you're not currently having fun in your #actorslife, that's a problem! If you're concerned about what others think of you, freeze up in auditions or callbacks, forgot who the F you are (+ fully owning & expressing YourSelf), feel discomfort in your next growth-edge or have lost faith and need to give your Artist & Humxn some Cosmic & Creative TLC, this prolific stream-of-consciousness episode will keep you on the edge of your earbuds! As Carl says, “Chicken soup for the soul. Auditions come and go, but you always have to live with you, so let's make sure that's taken care of - let's feed the spirit, then we can get to acting.” Carl is best known for his Guest Star recurring role as Officer Gordon on Tyler Perry's The Haves and the Have Nots (OWN). His recent TV credits include: The Summer I Turned Pretty (Amazon), A Friend of the Family (Peacock), MIKE (Hulu), and Dynasty (CW). Before his break into TV, Carl flourished on the International stage. His performances as Lucius Jenkins in Jesus Hopped the A Train and John in The Whipping Man earned him "Best Actor" nominations at the Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards held in Vancouver, British Columbia (2010-11, 2014-15 respectively). Carl holds an MFA in Acting from the University of Washington-Seattle and has been seen on regional stages from Portland, OR to Halifax, NS. Carl is here to remind you of who you are, how powerful you are. When you're ready to receive, it will be given. You will learn: Why the story has to be more important than the words (theatre thiiiing) Performer concerns vs. Character concerns (+ why it's vital you know & execute the difference) #1 rule of performing (+ the generative concept of ‘yes, and…') Why there's no shame in failing (+ tips to get back UP) How you *truly* impress a Casting Director (it's not what you think) Why Carl doesn't do ‘like' (+ more effective questions to ask YourSelf) How to raise the temperature in any room (& lift the caliber of those around you: actors are GIVERS!!) Why every TV & film actor has to do at least one play (+ falling forward with your intention onstage) Why delaying your gratitude is the hardest thing you will ever do (it's not about earning anything, it's about being prepared for your moment) Why Carl runs towards the things in a script that he doesn't know (whereas most want to polish what they're already good at) Why you need to practice like you intend to perform (+ how to take up space) What Carl does when the bookings are few & far between (better than a vision board!) Why there's no right or wrong, there's only rehearsal and the answer is exploration (I warned you in advance: grab a journal + pen!) And so much more!! Seriously. You know that annoying thing that won't let you alone, Creative Rebel? The thing that gnaws at your soul, keeps you up at night and won't give you any peace!? That thing–ahem, your PURPOSE–is what the inimitable Brian Patacca is here to explore & expand into new dimensions with us today. A lil' bit about Brian: 20,000 creative people get Brian's newsletter delivered to their inboxes every single week – and when they're not reading along, they're listening to his podcast, Brian Breaks Character. The podcast ranks among the top 1% of most listened to podcasts in the world with 5,000 downloads every month and 270+ 5-star reviews. Brian is the CEO of Team BKP and for the past two decades he's been helping creatives get what they want without all the suffering. His sweet spot is helping people who proudly walk the path LEAST taken with down-&-dirty marketing and branding advice, all while spilling the tea on how to bring home the bacon (or seitan... He does live in LA after all). But his secret superpower is his spiritual and grounding approach to the bizniz rooted in his training as a non-denominational reverend (read: Universe, God, Buddha, et al). He proves that when you follow your purpose instead of playing by a tired set of industry rules (read: limiting beliefs), you can skip the drama, generate momentum, and build excitement around who you are and what you love to do the most-est. Not only does he promise the how-to's, he has zero doubt that creativity is your divine birthright. You will learn: Why discomfort is a great barometer for the change you need to make (your body sends the cues!) Lack motivation vs light motivation (& how to tell the difference) Why artists are meant to elevate the consciousness of the planet (yes you, dear actor!) What to do when you have a sh*tty day (not juuust netflix & chill) Desire is the way the universe organizes & self-corrects itself How to feed your purpose (aka your CRAFT) with something OTHER than outside validation (feed me Seymour!) How to get out of artistic starvation mode (get a pen + paper for this!) Self care for your precious creative soul (yum) Breakthrough your fear of success (mhmm) Why: which headshot should I choose?! Is the *wrong* question to be asking (don't worry, Brian gives you a more meaningful option!) Make a bigger impact & be remembered in the present moment And soooo much more!! I'm guessing that you're open to ALL methods that can help you achieve your dreams... right, Rebel-Actor!? Today, we're diving deep into the incredible modality of Emotional Freedom Technique, commonly referred to as Tapping. EFT/Tapping is a blend of modern psychology and Chinese medicine (acupressure). By tapping on meridian power points, and tuning into emotions, memories, and perceptions, all parts of the Self (physical, mental, emotional) come in for healing all at once. I'm a master practitioner in training and I am thrilled to be sharing this powerful and highly effective tool with you in our creative laboratory. EFT/Tapping has transformed my life and I know it will transform yours too. You will discover: How EFT/Tapping can help you release negative patterns, habits and beliefs that are holding you back, and instill new empowering beliefs that serve you (and your dreams) in their place Brain plasticity and creating new neural pathways with EFT/Tapping Why your artist journey isn't linear + it's time to embrace the weird How love is the solvent (yes, even for your #actorslife) Why this specific method of EFT/Tapping is different and goes deeper than most Why just focusing on external shifts (finding the right agent, creating the right reel, etc…) isn't enough Why you yawn like crazy while Tapping A mini EFT/Tapping session (you'll leave feeling 10x lighter!) Before you tap, grab some water, open your mind and embrace the journey! Rebel-Actor, today we have a very special guest, creator extraordinaire and all around inspiring human be-ing, André Vauthey! And we almost broke the internet. 3 times. André Vauthey is a doctor-turned-actor/theater director, who was born and raised in Switzerland before moving to New York City, where he had his debut off-broadway as the lead in The Way We Get By, which then toured in Italy. As his most recent credits, he played among others the lead role of Treplev in The Nina Variations, the lead in a German adaptation of A Midsummernight's Dream in Frankfurt. Back in Switzerland, André played in the latest swiss show: Frieden. As a theater director, André graduated from the Barrow Group Directing School in NYC and went on directing and producing many plays off-broadway. In his spare time, André is a yoga and meditation teacher, a mountain lover and an impact coach. www.andrevauthey.com When André didn't find the liberty of self-expression as a doctor, he found himself pursuing his unspoken childhood dream: acting. From artistic voyages to London, NYC, and back to Switzerland, André has been in search of his divine truth, and commits daily to his intuition to lead him to the most transcendental experiences, onstage, onscreen and off. Buckle-up Rebel-Actor! You will learn: What it really means if you're afraid of something Why André compares tasting theatre to tasting chocolate for the first time How André only planned to study 1 year in NYC but ended up staying for all 4 years How André first acted from the head up, then slowly dropped into body Why working for an artist visa made André so uncomfortable Why the more work André did, the more humble he felt before the art & profession Why André at first hated yoga How Covid taught André that you can have heartbreak and gratitude at the same time Why you don't have to wait for pain to end to experience happiness Why it's one thing to connect to your intuition & another thing to hear it and follow it Why acting in and learning different languages is like dating How to make room for magic to come into your life! And SO much more. Rebel-Actor, this episode is full of so many surprises, not to mention curveball questions, spontaneous tears and internet combustions. Rebel-Actor, today we are moving through cultures, languages, and artistic mediums with my very special guest, dear friend and creative powerhouse: Polina Ionina! Polina Ionina is an innovative movement theater maker, director, and actor from Almaty, Kazakhstan. Classically trained at Pace University BFA Acting program in lower Manhattan, Polina has also studied abroad in Kyrgyzstan and Poland. Polina is a founder of The How, an international performance ensemble of movers, actors, and musicians from all over the world. Visceral, simple and theatrical, her work is characterized by the unique methodology she employs with her dancer-actors. Polina has also worked with up and coming film-makers in NYC such as Alex Blackstorm, Sonoko Ogata, and Steve Perterson as well as industry giants such as Bob Balaban, and Lisa Robinson. From an early age, immigrating and acclimating to new cultures, Polina learned to be adaptable anywhere, which was prime conditioning for her life as a multi-hyphenate artist. Polina soon found her sense of self, sense of comfort and her birthplace in the theatre, where she could honor her true identity: a creative being. You will learn: How to adapt to any situation (and why it's crucial to working with the partner) Polina's movement influences from her time spent at the Grotowski Institut in Poland What to do if you're not finding the work you want to see How Polina started her company The How in 2016 What to do if you feel stagnant or creatively stuck (and how to get out of it) How the seed of an impulse can come to life if you honor its timeline and water the soil How to trust the creative process even with no “logical step” to grip onto How Polina found a residency to workshop a new piece with 5 performers in a pandemic Limiting beliefs we carry as artists and how to diffuse their charge Finding catharsis through grief And SO much more. The conversation is just beginning, so be sure to take a snapshot of this episode and tag @mspyaari and @serabanda in your Instagram stories to share your thoughts and takeaways! Rebel-Actor, do you have a big dream? Do you believe you have committed to that dream? Well, today's guest is going to UPLEVEL the possibilities of your own dreams. I am so excited to introduce you to actress, singer and manifestor extraordinaire: Shanoza Majidova! Shanoza Majidova was born in Termez City, Uzbekistan, grew up in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and now lives in Brooklyn, NY. Shanoza is also a singer and participated in the adult TV Singing Competition "Zarafshon'' in Uzbekistan. After graduating from university in Malaysia, she moved to the USA in 2015. After three years, she took her first steps toward her acting dreams by studying at the Nashville Acting Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. She has also studied with Anthony Grasso at "Pearl Studios'' and spent over two years studying at T. Schreiber Studios, specifically with Terry Schreiber himself and Peter Miner. This past February, she started a new acting journey with Lana Shyptsina at the Russian School of Theatre Arts in NYC. Shanoza has appeared in over 7 short films, was part of a project called "A Sketch of New York'' produced by Joe DiNozi at the Producers Club Theatre in Manhattan, was invited by BAE TV to be part of a Military Training video, and is currently working on her own short film with her best friend and director, Fernanda Parrado. From the moment Shanoza found her introverted self in the spotlight as a child, her yearning for the stage has been pulling her towards incredible feats of faith, persistence and awe-inspiring artistic leaps into her dream. You will learn: How even as a child, Shanoza felt spiritually linked to the audience Why Shanoza could not commit to her dream from a young age, as an actress or a singer Shanoza received an offer to start her singing career and planned on applying to the Ilkhom Theatre but was forbidden from doing so What made Shanoza decide between choosing her singing career and acting career How Shanoza continually turned no into yes for herself How manifestation changed the game When immigrants move to new land, it is a rebirth, a life starting everything from zero What her first step towards her acting dream felt like How she feels in the NY/American acting industry as an immigrant, WOC, and English as her third language The myriad of acting schools Shanoza has studied at in NYC and the projects she has been a part of Why, as a community of artists, we speak the same language The wish as an instrument for healing and change In order to be a good actor, you have to know who you are internally Shanoza believes our industry and life will grow and be successful when we will be surrounded by people who ask these two questions: What kind of change is most needed in the world right now? And how can my work (as an actor) affect that change? And SO much more. Shanoza and I are super excited to hear what resonates with you, and how it touches your dreams! Are you an actor or an artist? When I say artist in the US or the West, a lot of folx think that I am referring to a fine artist (painter, sculpture, etc...) but actually, I am speaking of a dramatic artist. I only learned this when I ventured across the world to the basement of the Ilkhom Theatre in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and gave myself over to becoming a dramatic artist. Suddenly, my whole world changed: I no longer waited for someone to give me permission, I was the point of power, me, and I learned that my unique wishes/fears/curiosities, were the seeds of truth to create from onstage. ANYTHING was game. And I was encouraged to hone and refine my skills daily, because each time I showed up mattered. As a dramatic artist, I moved... From a getter (actor) to a giver (artist). From wanting quick results (actor) to honoring the process (artist). From reciting a piece of text text (actor) to concocting an entire rich life underneath the text (artist). From rehearsing when I have a job (actor) to tuning myself daily (artist). From waiting for a role (actor) to creating the role (artist)! And SO much more! When I was directed to change my focus at the Ilkhom (and was given the space + support to do so), my entire creative life changed. I felt empowered and excited. Every detail of life was now an opportunity to utilize and create from. I felt more artistically challenged and connected than ever before! And I want this same transformation for you. There's room for all of us to succeed, and we can uplift our partners in the process. Being a dramatic artist is a daily practice. What small detail can you implement today to help you take that leap, from actor to artist? Be sure to take a screenshot of this episode and tag me in your Instagram stories @serabanda + @actortoartist! Rebel-Actor, are you ready to dive into the sexy dirt of Shakespeare, soccer and life !?! Join me and today's very special guest, Rodrigo Beilfuss! Grab a pen + paper and get ready to jot down an abundance of aha's! Rodrigo Beilfuss spent four years in Ontario with the Stratford Festival, and then relocated back to Winnipeg to be the new Artistic Director of Shakespeare in the Ruins (SIR) in the Fall of 2019. Born and raised in Brazil, Rodrigo moved to Winnipeg in 2001 as an exchange student, discovering Hamlet in high-school. Mr Gord McLeod is to be blamed for everything, for Rodrigo hasn't stopped pursuing Shakespeare since. In Winnipeg, Rod was a founding member of Theatre by the River, and he has directed and acted in several productions at various local theatres. Rod also has a passion for teaching, and he is a theatre instructor at various organizations and universities. He holds a BA (Honours) from the University of Winnipeg, an MA in Classical Acting from England's LAMDA, and he's a graduate of Stratford's two flagship programs: the Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre and the Michael Langham Workshop for Classical Direction. More info at rodrigobeilfuss.com In theatre, we always talk about being in the moment. But do we really know what that means? Today, you'll discover: How Rodrigo transitioned to AD of SIR after four years in Stratford in 2019 SIR's dedication to performing Shakespeare in nontraditional spaces, particularly in the ruins of an old monastery with promenade staging, expanding the sense of the classical canon The outreach work SIR does with youth, emerging artists and inmates at Stony Mountain Penitentiary How inmates get Shakespeare in a way trained actor's do not The outreach work at Stony Mountain is an exercise in empathy, exchange of experiences and a search to find a path forward, together SIR is performing The Winter's Tale in French and English this summer What you can do that is inspired by the moment as opposed to in spite of the moment How Shakespeare was a passport for Rodrigo from Brazil to Canada Why it's a fallacy for us to go around thinking Shakepearan actors know what they're talking about The danger of fatal fluency (when an actor pretends that Shakespeare's language is normal) How Shakespeare and soccer are cultural unifiers How futebol (soccer) is considered an art in Brazil Why Rodrigo loves the chaos, imperfections and improvisations of soccer Why you don't have to follow the narrative of what you think your life as a theatre artist should be all the time What Rodrigo is excited about giving to actors right now And SO much more!! We have an incredible guest for you today, a collaborator, friend and artist I admire: Nicole Kontolefa!! Nicole is a native New Yorker, Russian trained actor and applied theatre practitioner. Her theatre work has taken her from Moscow to Montreal to Ekaterinburg and even Moldova. She always lands back in NYC where she believes that the means of theatre production should be given to the people (thank you, Augusto Boal!) as a way to celebrate communities, share wisdom and imagine a brighter future. Nicole is a Graduate of The Moscow Art Theatre School, CUNY SPS Applied Theatre Masters Program, co-founder of Studio Six of The Moscow Art Theatre and The Journey Theatre Project. From the moment Nicole pretended to be a snake at five years old, she knew she was an actress. Her theatrical studies and pursuits took her from LaGuardia High School to the Stanislavski School in Cambridge, to being part of the first American studio at the Moscow Art Theatre, to performing all over the globe. In Part I of our conversation, you will learn: Difference between Russian/American systems and how the jungle gym of Russian structure provides freedom How Nicole co-created the theatre company Studio Six with her fellow MXAT classmates How Studio Six had 7 full-length productions but nowhere to host them in NYC The process of creating 3 plays in 1 month at the Artsland Festival in Cambridge How Studio Six worked with Vladimir Pankov's SounDrama Studio to create the sensational Gorod.ok on the border of Belarus for 6 weeks of intensive rehearsal work Why any material is used as creative inspiration (literature, sound, poetry, dance, music, etc…) in the Russian training system and repertory When there's a new play in the US, the audience comes to see the play: the author is the reason we gather. In Russia, one goes to see what the director did with the play that's been done 100 times How acting teachers in Russia are working actors, whereas in the US, most are not and that can be detrimental to a young acting student How performances stay in your body, even after long interludes And SO much more!! Nicole and I are so eager to hear what resonates with you so be sure to take a screenshot of this episode and tag @nickilefa and @serabanda in your Instagram stories to share your thoughts and takeaways!! “Once you unlock the key to energy, you never lose it” - Marina Romanovna Turpisheva Today, it's just you and I, and we dive deep into the Essence of the Actor's Art: Energy. And HOW to harness energetic expansion for yourself onstage, onscreen and in life. This. Very. Moment. You'll learn: Why energy is so important yet often overlooked Why the Ilkhom Theatre's training puts such heavy focus on the energy of the actor (and the benefits that affords its artists, ensemble and performances) Why we must return to technical training to continually grow, connect with our partners and become our own energetic generators How even in dark, ugly roles we must begin from a point of positive energy How energy work literally alters the chemistry inside of you, your relationship to space, objects and people My favourite energy exercises for the stage How to recalibrate your energy this very moment and commit to a solid practice of growth Grow your energetic bandwidth with my FREE Energy Exercise! "Existing is a constant state of overcoming if you want to grow” - Tyler Polumsky Before we jump in, take stock: where do you find feelings of freedom onstage or onscreen? *If you haven't listened to Part I, we suggest doing so first!* Part II gets even juicier as Tyler and I explore the tendencies, techniques, energies and ethos between Eastern and Western acting. The way artists are raised and the ways they're expected to create in the world. You'll learn about: Cerebral tendencies in Western art vs. the visceral world-building in the East (the itch, the breeze, the scent, the dust) Analysis vs. études (you'll learn what an étude is) and how études become building blocks to the visceral worlds we create onstage Why it's so important to know yourself as an individual in art How Western theatre & schooling isn't built to ‘take your time' but excels in production How Western training gears actors up to work authentically in cinema, but the same toolbelt doesn't translate to the stage How the Russian method curates their schooling process in mindful way that supports young actors to become artists How Russian masters teach during the day and put their methods into action onstage at night Why no Ilkhom student does a monologue until their 6th semester (the end of their second year) How the business of the artist isn't to engage the intellect, but the heart and soul And SO much more. You'll also discover why Ilkhom students aren't allowed to walk through the Ilkhom playhouse, what I did for my invisible object étude and what Tyler is most excited about creating right now! We have a wonderful guest for you today: my previous teacher, translator and actor of The Ilkhom Theatre (among many other theatres) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Tyler Polumsky! Our conversation went way longer than expected so we have two parts to this episode! Tyler Polumsky has worked professionally as an actor, director, producer, musician, scenic designer, and teacher. He found his true creative voice and artistic aesthetic studying acting and directing with the late Mark Weil at the Ilkhom Theatre in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. During his nearly 10 years in Tashkent, he became the first and only American to work in Ilkhom's Main Ensemble, performing in the standing repertoire and touring with the group to Russia, France, Poland, Japan, and elsewhere. As a Master Teacher in the Ilkhom Theatre School of Drama, he taught acting (M. Chekhov, Stanislavski, Vakhtangov, Grotowski), plasticas (Physical Improvisation and Biomechanics), and elocution (English and Russian). As Assistant Master, he taught Lecoq Methods (masks, clown, buffoonery), fencing and acrobatics, voice, and theatre history. Since returning to Seattle in 2012, Tyler has worked with The Seagull Project, appearing in The Seagull, The Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard. He has taught with Freehold, presented workshops and master classes at the University of Washington, and taught and directed at Cornish College of the Arts. He joined Akropolis Performance Lab as an Artistic Associate in 2015, created the role of the Bad Angel for APL's production of Ecce Faustus (2016) and is Raskolnikov in Crime + Punishment (2017-18). Tyler prefers the long form, ensemble-driven approach to the craft such as is practiced by APL, which better reflects his roots in the Russian theatre tradition. The concept of истина / istina / divine or cosmic truth, arose early on in our chat. Istina is the essence of the Ilkhom Theatre's training, its performances, its school and lives in its artists. We take a deep dive into: the difference between Eastern & Western training systems the importance of energetic exchanges onstage and off the rigorous technical training and experience that is required to access moments of naked, universal truth onstage the late creator of the Ilkhom Theatre, Mark Weil, and his lifelong pursuit of the merging of East & West (and how these worlds danced and collided onstage) seeking out spaces of resonance and how that can be the bridge across cultures the integral part of the Russian system that's skipped over in the West the necessity of tuning into the partner And SO much more! “It's great to tell a story. It's better to tell a story and somebody walks out of there and it's part of their DNA.” Take a screenshot of this episode and tag @tolyatolyantolik and @serabanda in your Instagram stories to let us know what you thought of this episode! We have an aaamazing guest for you today: N'Tasha Anders! N'Tasha is an actress, artist and my fellow Teen Council partner from our time teaching comprehensive sex-Ed in high school via Planned Parenthood. N'Tasha received her BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. Upon graduation, she completed a nine month Artistic Ensemble Program at the Milwaukee Repertory in Wisconsin. She traveled for years with Seattle's Book-It Repertory Theatre. Through Book-It Repertory Theatre, she gained her love for Childrens' Theatre and learned the importance of the Comprehensive workshop classes that they facilitated after every performance. She took this passion for working with the youth with her to NYC and began working with a nonprofit organization called Changing Theater Perspectives as she continued to pursue her acting career. She now focuses on cultivating inclusive curriculum and group activities that expands the physical, emotional, and social growth development of children and young adults in Houston, Texas. N'Tasha's experiences as a black actress are telling as to what is still happening in the acting world and how it needs to be spoken about until real change takes place. Learn how N'Tasha had to build a backbone early on in her career, how the glitz and glamour of the industry was a facade, and how she blossomed in her community of fellow black actors in NYC, cultivating the education she never received in her acting conservatory. We dive into: The importance of being in a room with other black artists: playwrights, actors, directors and beyond What N'Tasha's wants more of for black art: releasing stories of struggle and focusing on narratives of celebration that highlight black joy, excellence, and love Augusto Boal's “Theatre of the Oppressed” and how forum theatre has the power to inspire social change Live improv: N'Tasha visits a previous experience with the backbone she has now to help reconcile an event within the framework of forum theatre We explore all this and SO much more! The MAGIC IF has the potential to change your life (and the trajectory of your 2021): onstage, onscreen, and everywhere in between. How are you using conscious tools as the gateway to your creative subconscious? Perhaps you've stumbled across one of Stanislavski's token tools and used it in your own training, methods, and work: If my character was in these circumstances, what would my character do? But the Russian method takes it a step further: If I were in these circumstances, what would I do? The Magic IF lifts us out of the world of ‘reality' into our imaginations. It's a stimulus, a lever, a natural motivator that provokes an authentic response. And that's what we're here to do as actors: create honest life in imaginary circumstances. Discover what western classrooms omit in their training, why it's so important to study yourself before you play anyone else, learn the magic IF that rocked my world and explore your own magic IF'S that can transform your life and your career. The wish is wiggly today. We dive into two controversial topics: You give your best performances when you're tired. (Do you agree?) I learned this over my three years at the Ilkhom Theatre in Tashkent, UZ. Our teachers would spend all day with us in school and then perform at night. Marathon days were standard. Somehow, in exhaustion, all the frills and falsities fall away and we hone in razor-like focus for the task at hand. Exhaustion offers us extreme presence. You do not have the right to be sick. (Hmmm… do you agree?) Russian theatre school is hardcore. My classmates and I were told from the beginning: as part of the ensemble, you do not as an individual have the right to be sick. Be here, heal here. I digested this notion because I was a good student (even with tortuous amounts of travel tummy). But these mantras aren't stagnant - we can evolve with these ideas and shape them to our benefit. In the lens of 2020, we can use ALL that we're feeling to create. Every shade of emotion is fuel. Actors are agents of change. Creativity heals. I have a suggestion: we can still give the best performances of our lives in the last weeks of 2020. I am here with you. Are you with me? #speechforthestage a e i o u S → Sh Sh → S say-see-sai-soh-soo shay-shee-shai-shoh-shoo say-shay see-shee sai-shai soh-shoh soo-shoo shay-say shee-see shai-sai shoh-soh shoo-soo This is a dialogue and I need your input! It's our job as artists to create from possibility. I have 3 questions for you. Grab your pen and paper and let's get doodling (voice recording, dancing, writing, painting, however you let the wish move through you…) What type of actor do you want to be? (Are you like me and do the things that scare you?) What are you giving back to the craft? So much of our focus surrounds getting: an agent, a role, a certain something… but what we put out comes back to us. How do you show up for the work? Yes, yes #theactorskitchen isn't just a goofy thing to do some of the time, it's what precipitates the performance. It's the foundation. I'm super super curious about what comes up for you - please reach out on IG @serabanda or send me a wish letter at impulse@actortoartist.com. Oh, and add a spoonful of Fun. Just because. Because we all need a collective hug right now, today, I am inviting you into the space of Rest. Raw Resonant REST. We go deep into why we seek what we do, in the arts and beyond (*hint*: it has something to do with reverberations of emotions/feelings/sensations across spaces. And - you guessed it - the theatre is where it happens most powerfully!). I share a belief I uncovered about myself this year that shocked me. Grab your hammer and poke holes alongside me into the facades we all have, the masks we all wear. Let's dig below the surface of rest, of art, of ourselves. Like creativity, rest cannot be contained. It's unpredictable. Just like chairs being thrown out of the sky (yes, this DID happen, at completely resonant moments. Universe, we hear you!) Instead of DO-ING, let's focus on BE-ING. As on the stage, as in life, the be-ing is what's most interesting. This week, we're zooming in on the mechanics of what gives an ensemble its essence: feeling of the partner! Attention on the partner, love of the partner, existing onstage for the partner. Join my first guest - my partner in life and onstage - Akmal Rakhimov and I as we dive deep into how to build relationships offstage to create room for magic onstage. Akmal offers insight into his own unique artistic journey and the ways one can turn the craft of making breakfast into a daily creative process. We explore how to communicate beyond language, why all our senses need to be activated onstage and how different resources get turned on with the desire to know your partner inside and out. Join us for laughs, surprises, and Akmal's innate ability to have an audience leaning in. #speechforthestage Because we are STILL learning each other and ‘mistakes' make it juicy. a e i o u T → B B → T tay-bay tee-bee tai-bai toh-boh too-boo bay-tay bee-tee bai-tai boh-toh boo-too Russian version: Тби Тбэ Тбо Тбу Тба Тбы Dip your toes into our story in The Guardian Let Akmal know how you're feeling: @the_akmal_rakhimov Check out Akmal's études (scenes)! Ensemble. Why do we need it? I believe the ensemble is the missing piece of the puzzle, to our own individual process, the collective process and our culture as a whole. So how do we create the im-possible? (for reference, 99% of folx in the West have told me it's not possible). We break the rules. And here's a secret *hint hint*: by tuning in and planting the possibility into our imaginations, we're already at work! We cover a lot today, from how you call your artist-self, to the necessary safety and trust of the ensemble (required for risk + improv), to the greater picture. Theatre is a mirror of society; when we only play bits and parts of ourselves before hurling into the next shiny task, what are we reflecting back? Over the last six months, our lives have been turned on their heads. So how do we continue to create? I offer some tips on how to establish a creative routine so we can continue to grow. The silver lining to these intense times is that the focus is turned inward. Even though we are socially distanced, there are many practices we can do to feed our inner artist. We are constantly in the process of #workontheself. Let's keep our actor-selves in motion! #speechforthestage. a e i o u F fay - fee - fai - foh - foo fay-fay fee-fee fai-fai foh-foh foo-foo fay-fay-fay fee-fee-fee fai-fai-fai foh-foh-foh foo-foo-foo Write me a wish letter: impulse@actortoartist.com Connect with me on instagram! @serabanda Twist your tongue with me on Youtube at Actor to Artist. My artistic journey has been far from ordinary. From moving across the continent and borders as a young girl to going to my last choice university to finding myself in a Russian theatre school in Uzbekistan to falling into a multicultural love to performing a self-devised solo show on 42nd street, I have navigated life by my impulses. The wish. By sharing my own journey, my hope is that we can all embrace where we are in our own unique experience. There is no “right” path to becoming an actor. But everyday, we can choose to be an artist. Let's trust the process. #speechforthestage. a e i o u J jay - jee - jai - joh - joo jay-jay jee-jee jai-jai joh-joh joo-joo jay-jay-jay jee-jee-jee jai-jai-jai joh-joh-joh joo-joo-joo Connect with me on instagram! @serabanda Dig in further: actortoartist.com Learn more about the Ilkhom Theatre: ilkhom.com/en/ Disclaimer: Your use of the content on this podcast, content on actortoartist.com, content on our social media or content from our email list is at your own risk. Welcome to the ensemble! Today, we are exploring our wishes. What is a wish? As actors, we know what an objective is, what we need to accomplish in a scene or play. But the term objective stifles a key element: desire. Stimulating the spirit. We are creatures of want. And that's where the wish comes in. In a Russian theatre school in Uzbekistan, I learned not only to lead myself by my wishes onstage, but also in life. Let's turn our “objectives” into WISHES and make the daily commitment to living an artistic life, together. #speechforthestage. a e i o u W way - wee - why - woh - woo way-way wee-wee why-why woh-woh woo-woo way-way-way wee-wee-wee why-why-why woh-woh-woh woo-woo-woo Connect with me on instagram! @serabanda Dig in further: actortoartist.com Disclaimer: Your use of the content on this podcast, content on actortoartist.com, content on our social media or content from our email list is at your own risk.
