PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Ted Geoghegan (WE ARE STILL HERE, MOHAWK) returns to discuss his latest feature, the Saturn Award nominated BROOKLYN 45 with Adam, Joe, and Arwen. From trying something completely different on the heels of his successful 2015 horror film WE ARE STILL HERE with his 2017 historical action drama MOHAWK… to the pride he takes in hearing from an indigenous elderly Mohawk man that his film was “the first time he ever saw a film in his native language”… to making his triumphant return to the horror genre with BROOKLYN 45 and working closely with his father (a US Air Force veteran) on the screenplay's authenticity… to the benefits of shooting a contained story on a built set with fly away walls… to the incredible reception BROOKLYN 45 received after it's world premiere at the South By South West film festival (it is currently available on SHUDDER and available to rent digital)… Ted returns 300 episodes later with a seasoned perspective and lots of great new stories! Also, Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” to a listener who is growing tired of gratuitous cursing in so many modern TV series and films, Joe's SUITABLE FLESH premieres on SHUDDER, and Adam announces 3 more conventions scheduled for March and April in his ever growing list of 2024 appearances.

¡Gracias y feed the cvlt!

One room. Just one room. Horror and thriller movies have used the technique often. It makes a film almost like a stage play where actors and actresses can shine. The new Shutter exclusive release, BROOKLYN 45 (2023), most certainly does this. There are only a handful of performers and truly one and only one room for 95% of the film. A group of friends, both military veterans and intelligence employees, meet up at the end of World War II for a dinner set up by their friend and leader Lieutenant Colonel Clive Hockstatter. Though it is time to celebrate as the war has ended, Hockstatter's wife recently took her own life. Soon, the Lieutenant Colonel has let his guests know he has another intention for the invite that is more than dinner and reminiscing. Highly successful independent filmmaker Ted Geoghegan is back as writer/director for this new supernatural horror movie. The film stars a number of fine actors in an ensemble cast including genre favorite Jeremy Holm. Your co-hosts take a look at the recently released thriller and give their thoughts.

Most of us have been there. There's a life change, something happens, and you have to move. That's what is happening with us, right now! And why not celebrate the stress and exhaustion of moving preparation, with a series of episodes on people moving into horrific situations? Because at least we can take comfort that what happens to them probably won't happen to us.When a house has not been occupied for 30 years, as someone considering making that place my home, I may be curious as to why. Maybe the Sacchetti family got such a great deal that they didn't care? But really, they probably could have done some research. I feel like they're probably going to figure out why this movie is called We Are Still Here (2015). And why the hell is it so hot in the cellar?

Make Believe Seattle is a genre film festival celebrating their inaugural year this weekend (March 23-26)! Thanks to Ted Geoghegan, I have the opportunity to cover six titles for this year's run, releasing the reviews as a miniseries on THE MOVIES. First up is the festival's Opening Night selection, Jake Van Wagoner's ALIENS ABDUCTED MY PARENTS AND NOW I FEEL KINDA LEFT OUT. Don't worry. It also took me a couple tries to say that title right out loud. The movie follows Itsy (Emma Tremblay), an aspiring teenage journalist frustrated by her family's move from the city to remote Utah town Pebble Falls, where the only kind of action comes in the form of snapping photos of dilapidated signs and cars. That is, until she meets Calvin Kipler (Jacob Buster), a classmate convinced his parents were abducted by aliens 10 years prior. I don't say "convinced" with the mental image of Charlie Kelly gesticulating wildly at a string-covered board. Calvin's made a full-blown spacesuit and wears it to school. He refers to people he trust as "friendlies." Star Trek's Vulcan "V" hand sign is not a pop culture gesture to him; it is intergalactic custom. This kid makes Randy Quaid from INDEPENDENCE DAY seem like Scully and Mulder. Seeing an opportunity to write a story about Calvin that'll win her a summer semester abroad at NYU, Itsy befriends the spaceman. At first, she focuses only on the story, but starts to warm up to Calvin, maybe moreso than expected. It's pretty easy for me to fall for Calvin too. Buster's performance is magnetic, drawing me and Itsy in with wit and goofball charm. As the story progresses, so does his emotional range, and I can attribute most of his moments that don't work to the strength of the screenplay/direction, which sometimes neuters the heavier portions of his story. However, this isn't a heavy movie. Calvin and Itsy's problems seem relatable enough even to young kids, and watching them fidget with and tweak gizmos inside Calvin's glorified shed of a research lab reminds me of the best times I spent dicking about trying to invent shit that would change the world (mainly a working web-shooter, but I digress). There's fun to be had and majesties to gawk at. After all, there's something about a night lit up with stars that seems not just ripe, but also infinite with possibility, with dreams. Does this thing suffer the effects of a limited budget? Yeah; any driving scene's got a rough green screen effect. Props often feel cobbled together from thrift shops and junkyards. Sometimes, the space VFX looks like something copied and pasted from After Effects, but when this stuff works, it's got an Amblin-inspired, DIY charm. What can I say? I like my sci-fi scrappy. Give it a watch! --------------------------- Closing Song: "Gimme Sympathy (Acoustic)" - Metric --------------------------- Review THE MOVIES on Apple Podcasts & I'll read it on the next episode! --------------------------- Follow Daniel on: Twitter - @TheMovies_Pod Instagram - @themoviespod Letterboxd - https://letterboxd.com/Daniel_Berrios/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/themoviespodcast/message

Sometimes you just have to pat yourself on the back for doing the bare minimum. That's exactly what we're doing this week as we put out an episode for the second week in a row! This week's news feed is full of some wild names. We start off with PARI, which means fairy in English. Coming out of India, you won't be finding any Bollywood numbers in this one. Sticking with the letter P we move on to PYEWACKET. Weird name, good looking movie. BORELY RECTORY is telling the story of England's most haunted house by resurrecting an old technology. Netflix is back to dropping movies without warning. This time it is VERONICA, and it looks like it might live up to the hype of being “Spain's answer to THE CONJURING”. And finally we talk about DEATH HOUSE. We've known about this one for over a year, but recent events forced us to break our silence. Round 2 is a review of Ted Geoghegan's latest effort, MOHAWK. The story is a fresh idea in the genre, but does it actually deliver on something new? Spoiler: we are fervently in agreement on this one. To wrap up the episode, we dust off the always fun BULLSHIT ARTIST. Two men enter, and honestly two men will leave, BUT one of them will be talking shit. Make sure to visit audibletrial.com/modernhorrors to claim your copy of THE TERROR by Dan Simmons. You're welcome.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. A film written and directed by a publicist? Is that possible? Well, yeah, especially when that person has written some pretty decent cult genre films prior, including 2008's slasher film, Sweatshop, listed as the best horror film of the year by the review website, Horrorphilia. Now in his directorial debut, Ted Geoghegan has put together the film, We Are Still Here, a supernatural bloodbath that has gotten great reviews from the Los Angeles Times, AV Club, Rex Reed, Entertainment Weekly, Variety, and the Village Voice. When middle aged couple Paul and Anne leave the city and move to a rural town in Massachusetts, they expect to escape the memories of the death of their adult son from a tragic car accident. But odd things begin to happen in their new home. The boiler seems to be overheating and leaving off an awful smell, and Anne begins to think she feels the presence of the ghost of their son in the house. However, is their something more involved with the oddities in their new life? The film takes place in 1979 which fits perfectly with the throwback experience to the B-films of the era including those from Europe. Refreshingly, the cast feels more realistic being middle aged and having none of the supermodel twenty-somethings cast as teenagers. With a brooding first two acts and a final act that heads straight down to grindhouse madness, We Are Still Here feels oddly fresh. Comparisons to Ti West's House of the Devil seem apt. Dark Discussions, with author Kristi Petersen Schoonover joining in, discuss their thoughts.
