This week, Lucinda is joined by international best-selling author, Dr Beverley Kaye, for a conversation focussing upon employee engagement, retention, and how to take a different approach to not just retaining employees, but ensuring they remain engaged. Key Takeaways Sometimes we "love" our staff, and we lose them. But it is far worse to lose them, and they have them remain in the organisation. Certainly, our people should not always be so hasty to entirely exit an organisation if they want something better. Also, there are multiple ways to stay in a place that may not have been considered. Indeed, an organisation is built upon the talent that our people bring to it. We must view our business this way around. We are nothing without the people that make it happen. You should constantly question old rules that may well have become outdated. Lastly, especially in the new world of remote working, it might be time to align with a new way of working. BEST MOMENTS 'We don't think about all the treasure in the massive middle' 'The subject of employee engagement is still key' 'I believe that love shows through in the relationships you build, in the way you develop and grow people, and the culture and environment that a manager builds' 'Which will you keep? The rules, or the people?' VALUABLE RESOURCES Join the HR Uprising LinkedIn Group The HR Uprising ranked 9th in Feedspot's ‘Top 30 UK HR Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021'. Episode 131: 3 Box Model - Deny, Fight or Use it

Professional Coaches and Personal Friends

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2021 50:19

What is the 3 Box Model? Philosophies and religions both talk about the concept that we can decide how we feel about events – it's our choice on how we react.  This model takes that concept and helps you to do precisely that.  It is a framework that allows you to consider everything that has happened, is happening and may happen and supports you in deciding how you are going to react and to use it. The three box model is a framework where you can consciously frame what has, what is or will happen in your personal or professional life.  Why this is important We can spend so much time and energy trying to bury things, pretend things are different, that we are different and when we do this, all that time and energy doesn't move us forward.  It doesn't make us happier.  By taking control of what is in each box we get to choose what to spend our time on.  Important in that is the ‘we”.  We take control.  Nobody else. We get to determine what we want. We choose what will take our energy, time and focus. Will a particular situation work against you, be a constant battle to control or actually work for you? You get to choose. This self determination is a key part of Self Development. This model is a new tool in your mental tool box.  This can help you to prepare yourself for a better outcome – allow you to take more control over what is happening and what is going to happen next.  This means a more confident version of ‘You'. More authentic. A ‘You' who is spending their energy better, leading to a more successful, happier version of you.  You get to channel issues and experiences so you get better returns and a higher self confidence Stephen walks us through the model and the 3 boxes - Deny It - Fight it and Use it. When Stephen first introduced me to this model there was an immediate impact - understanding the framework allowed me to make sense of some things that I was unable to nail down before. Once we understand that there are 3 boxes with issues sitting within each it helps to make sense about some of the things that are working really well for us – and why we sometimes seem to struggle.  This understanding on its own is a confidence builder Then there is the knowledge that the boxes remain where they are – but that issues can be moved from box to box.  And you can make that happen.  You can choose which issue is something you're going to move up the chain and improve your own self confidence As you get more comfortable with the model you get to think more strategically - Which situations work against you? Be a constant battle to control? Or actually work for you? Which situations is it time to move? Which do I need to acknowledge are there? Some notes: 1 Naming – naming issues and situations is the start of objectifying them.  Once it is a a named object, it feels more controllable.  Visible. Manageable. 2 Acknowledge it – understand that it is in a box already.  Something you are already denying, fighting against or using. 3 Choose what you want to move.  There will always be something in each of the 3 boxes.  Some will remain where they are for a long time.  That's ok – you're choosing the order. Consciously. 4 One step at a time.  Don't try to jump from Deny straight to Use it – ‘Fight It' is a good staging post to get there. 5 Good things count too. Acknowledging and appreciating that good things live in the boxes too.  Don't deny your own part in your successes.  Don't fight against recognising your skills.  This will lead to a drop in your confidence and the Imposter syndrome.  Accept and Use what you did and let it fuel your next success. Any thoughts or comments let us know at podcast@coachpro.online Full Transcript at https://rhinoconsulting.nl/episode-131-three-boxes-deny-fight-or-use-it   First 10 minutes transcript below   Warren Hammond  01:07 Welcome back Podcats to another conversation with me Warren, and CEO of CoachPro Stephen Gribben. Now, this is a good one. This one is about The Three Boxes. That's the best way for me to describe it, you hear me struggling to try and come up with a decent description later. But in my head is just the three box model. Very powerful. For one it's a simple model, which we all know is always useful. This can change how you look at anything that's ever happened to you and everything that's going to happen to you. So it's an important part of the optimal appraisal process, and the whole self-development. We have the choices. The choice of whether we're going to spend energy fighting these things, or denying these things, or using these things. Not going to say too much, you'll quickly see how simple this model is but how profound its influence can be. You'll enjoy this one. There's lots of good stuff in it.   Warren Hammond  02:07 As always, there'll be some notes, we're doing a full transcript now. So you can read along, if that helps. Blogs, there's the models on the different websites. So get involved, get in touch, if there's anything else you'd like us to cover, if there's any questions that you have. Email is podcast@coachpro.online. Anyway, let's get going. Here comes cheesy music.   Warren Hammond  02:39 Today, as always, is a good topic. And how I think about this is the framework that it's described in. The three box model is how I think about it. And I use this and think about it in so many different ways. And I'm trying to think what is the perfect description for anyone listening to it. And the best I've come up with so far is this is a perfect model for better reframing of your past. Now, that's doesn't sound like the title of an album. But we'll go with it so far. So let's get to the expert, Stephen. Three box model. What is it? Explain to everybody who can't see into my head, what exactly is the three box model?   Stephen Gribben  03:32 The three box model is a framework where you can consciously frame what has, what is or will happen in your personal or professional life.   Warren Hammond  03:49 Okay, so this isn't just past then. So I've just said past. This is about today, what's happening today, what could happen tomorrow, this is about how you look at anything around you and think how do I put this into a better context?   Stephen Gribben  04:02 Yeah, it's a framework for empowering you to make that conscious choice and own where you place things that happen to you or things that you make happen in a way that has optimal benefit. So rather than things just happening to you or occurring, you get more of a sense of ownership, more of a self-determination of where that's going to go, how that's going to work for you, what you can use it for, how you're going to make that optimal. Whether it is labelled a good thing or bad thing or an okay thing to begin with emotionally, you making that conscious decision to then say I'm going to decide what I'm going to do with that. Whether that is a thing that's happened in the past, whether it's something that's happened to you just now or whether it's something that's on its way.   Warren Hammond  04:53 Okay. This is already bigger, as always. So this is anything that's going on around me, me, thinking in the self-development, consciously owning, this is the part this is going to play in my future outcome. This is how I decide how important or how I'm going to use this for whatever my future outcome is.   Stephen Gribben  05:21 Yeah, and look, this can be for the smallest practical things. I tend to first of all get to introduce this with clients, when they describe something as a Make or Break. And that's when I feel well, you really don't want to leave that chance do you?   Warren Hammond  05:37 Okay. I think of this a lot when I think back, especially about past experiences, especially bad experiences. So we're talking in sales teams and stuff, then there's a way of recontextualizing, again, another awful word, about anything awful that's happened  to us. Let's say a bad Q or a bad month, or a bad loss of a client. This is something that this model can be used to reframe it and make it better. But you're saying this is not just bad things from your past. This can be anything from today, from tomorrow, as well as from yesterday.   Stephen Gribben  06:16 I think most people would accept we naturally see, or create, rather the opportunity to learn from adversity, learn from mistakes, in order to improve things that haven't gone the way we'd wanted. I've always looked upon that and said, Well, what if we could also learn from our successes? What if we could build from a winning position? What if we could use the victory and use the great result, to learn from that also so that we can recreate and enhance that. So this is not a fix? This is a solution. This is a way of looking at the things that happen and get beyond that label of right wrong, good, bad, strong, weak, things I wanted, things that I didn't want or liked or didn't like, and saying, well,  that thing, which box is it currently in and which box do I want to start putting it in.   Warren Hammond  07:16 This is great. This goes straight to the heart, then of this whole self-development chat that we talk about is you know, the building on the strengths, that conscious ownership, there's looking at everything around you and deciding what you're going to make work for you. So where do we get started on this in the three boxes,   Stephen Gribben  07:35 First of all, as you've said this fits with self-development, and this is the 'why should you put things in boxes, first of all. There is a value in putting things in boxes because you objectify it at that stage. And therefore you can look at it more objectively, more intelligently, you can see it as a thing, rather than wrapped up into a whole mess of stuff. So what this is about in terms of self-development, this will allow you to become more self-aware that things happen and accept that things happen, good, bad, indifferent. It will give you more self-confidence and be able to say, I can take control back, I can be in charge of this, I can direct this, I can decide what box I'm going to put this in. That allows you then to develop creative self-management, so that you get things to work for you rather than you always having to work through stuff or deal with stuff. But actually your self management is putting that stuff in a way that works for you. Not always doing everything for it in the hope that it works out okay. But doing it in a way where it also then works for you. And then finally, that self-determination, where you can look at the things you have done from the past and say 'Which box am I now going to make sure I get into, you can look at the present and say okay, the box, I'm going to place this in is that box, but also for the future things that are either on their way or you want to create. This is how I'm going to use this to get to where I really want to get to, to reach my full potential and be genuinely happy and successful by being me, rather than pretending or living to other people's rules and expectations.   Warren Hammond  09:27 So the self-awareness, the self-confidence, the self-management, the self-determination, this pathway of self-development is so strong. And something you said right at the beginning, which I never thought about before in this three box model even though it's there, right in the heart of it, is the box. It's the fact that you are putting it in the box means you've labelled it, you've objectified it in some way, which then automatically means maybe you've removed some of the vagueness, emotion out of it, you've intelligently considered it. And the moment you label it, you can then put it into the box. And then suddenly, it's manageable, isn't it because you put it in a box, you've contained it in some way or another, and then your self-confidence, your self management and self-determination can kick in. So first bit of that process then is just as important. I never thought about it before is, the moment you put it in a box, that's an important part of being up in a way at the races.

The holy Martyr Conon lived in the days of the holy Apostles; he was born in the village of Bydane of Isauria in Asia Minor, to parents named Nestor and Nada. He was instructed in the Faith and baptised into Christ by the Archangel Michael himself, who, it is said, accompanied him for the rest of his life. His parents joined him in marriage to a pagan maiden named Anna; but on their wedding night he took a candle, put it under a vessel, and asked her 'Which is better, light or darkness?' She answered 'Light,' and he told her of the Christian faith and the joys of the spiritual life. She accepted Christ, and the two agreed to live in virginity. Conon went on to bring many pagans to Christ, including his own parents. His wife and both parents died after a few years (Nestor as a Martyr) and he gave himself up entirely to prayer, fasting, and contemplation on God. He was known as a wonder-worker, and even evil spirits were compelled to serve him.   During one of the persecutions, Magnus the governor of Isauria imprisoned Conon and had him tortured, beaten and stabbed with knives. Believers obtained some of his blood, and the sick who were anointed with it became well. A large crowd of Christians whom Conon had brought to Faith surrounded the governor's palace demanding Conon's release, and the frightened governor let him go. He lived for two more years in his own home, then reposed in peace.

Ryan Zauk sits down with NYU Stern's Dr. Sabrina Howell to discuss her most recent paper titled 'Which lenders had the highest minority share among their PPP loans?' Though the answer may not surprise you, the data, methodology, reasoning, and implications might. In the wake of the PPP, there was a lot of scrutiny into who was getting (and not getting) access to crucial government aid. Gatekept by financial institutions, from Wells Fargo to fintechs, small businesses were at the mercy of institutions. So it begged the question, who did these institutions choose to allocate their money to? And did the data differ across institution types and loan applicants? If so, why? Professor Howell, her colleagues, and a consortium of partners set out to dig into the data, with a focus on who was lending to minority-owned businesses. In today’s episode, Ryan and Dr. Howell discuss: 4:40 Her previous research in ICOs and the ‘joke’ ICO she saw that hit $15M in market cap (it's even stranger than Doge Coin) 8:07 The basics of the PPP and the abstract of her paper 11:21 Why Fintechs were able to more effectively lend to minority-owned businesses, and why this giant lending gap existed 15:50 What data they used to triangulate the race of business owners 17:48 How the PPP can be a turning point for Fintechs to build relationships with small businesses 21:10 What the government, fintech, and small business should take away from the PPP 25:00 Her two key recommendations for the ‘next PPP’ 28:07 What’s taught in her NYU fintech class The Paper: http://nebula.wsimg.com/c26ae478f12bf4a15666ac250c259240?AccessKeyId=1EB5B81197329425B7C4&disposition=0&alloworigin=1 For more FinTech insights, follow us below: Medium: medium.com/wharton-fintech WFT Twitter: twitter.com/whartonfintech Ryan's Twitter: twitter.com/RyanZauk LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/wharton-fintech-club/

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 10, 2020 is: spontaneous • spahn-TAY-nee-us • adjective 1 : proceeding from natural feeling or native tendency without external constraint 2 : arising from a momentary impulse 3 : controlled and directed internally : self-acting 4 : produced without being planted or without human labor : indigenous 5 : developing or occurring without apparent external influence, force, cause, or treatment 6 : not apparently contrived or manipulated : natural Examples: "'You're coming to San Diego?' said Courtney excitedly. 'I am. I've decided to be spontaneous for once.' She paused. 'Which means that the visit is on short notice. Sorry about that.'" — Douglas E. Richards, The Cure, 2013 "The key, Strassman says, is to give employees opportunities to spend unstructured work time together. Such moments can reduce social isolation and increase spontaneous collaboration and creativity—while not adding more meetings to already-full calendars." — Barbara Z. Larson, Harvard Business Review, 27 Oct. 2020 Did you know? When English philosopher Thomas Hobbes penned his 1656 The Questions Concerning Liberty, Necessity, and Chance he included the following: "all voluntary actions … are called also spontaneous, and said to be done by man's own accord." Hobbes was writing in English, but he knew Latin perfectly well too, including the source of spontaneous; the word comes, via Late Latin spontaneus, from the Latin sponte, meaning "of one's free will, voluntarily." In modern use, the word spontaneous is frequently heard in more mundane settings, where it often describes what is done or said without a lot of thought or planning.

PHP Internals News: Episode 71: What didn’t make it into PHP 8.0? London, UK Thursday, November 19th 2020, 09:34 GMT In this episode of "PHP Internals News" we're looking back at all the RFCs that we discussed on this podcast for PHP 7.4, but did not end up making the cut. In their own words, the RFC authors explain what these features are, with your host interjecting his own comments on the state of affairs. The RSS feed for this podcast is https://derickrethans.nl/feed-phpinternalsnews.xml, you can download this episode's MP3 file, and it's available on Spotify and iTunes. There is a dedicated website: https://phpinternals.news Transcript Derick Rethans 0:15 Hi, I'm Derick, and this is PHP internals news, a weekly podcast dedicated to demystifying the development of the PHP language. This is Episode 71. At the end of last year, I collected snippets from episodes about all the features that did not make it into PHP seven dot four, and I'm doing the same this time around. So welcome to this year's 'Which things were proposed to be included into PHP 8.0, but didn't make it. In Episode 41, I spoke with Stephen Wade about his two array RFC, a feature you wanted to add to PHP to scratch an itch. In his own words: Steven Wade 0:52 This is a feature that I've, I've kind of wish I would have been in the language for years, and talking with a few people who encouraged. It's kind of like the rule of starting a user group right, if there's not one and you have the desire, then you're the person to do it. A few people encouraged to say well why don't you go out and write it? So I've spent the last two years kind of trying to work up the courage or research it enough or make sure I write the RFC the proper way. And then also actually have the time to commit to writing it, and following up with any of the discussions as well. Steven Wade 1:20 I want to introduce a new magic method the as he said the name of the RFC is the double underscore to array. And so the idea is that you can cast an object, if your class implements this method, just like it would toString; if you cast it manually, to array then that method will be called if it's implemented, or as, as I said in the RFC, array functions will can can automatically cast that if you're not using strict types. Derick Rethans 1:44 I questioned him on potential negative feedback about the RFC, because it suggested to add a new metric method. He answered: Steven Wade 1:53 Beauty of PHP is in its simplicity. And so, adding more and more interfaces, kind of expands class declarations enforcement's, and in my opinion can lead to a lot of clutter. So I think PHP is already very magical, and the precedent has been set to add more magic to it with seven four with the introduction of serialize and unserialize magic methods. And so for me it's just kind of a, it's a tool. I don't think that it's necessarily a bad thing or a good thing it's just another option for the developer to use Derick Rethans 2:21 The RFC was not voted on and a feature henceforth did not make it into PHP eight zero. Derick Rethans 2:27 Operator overloading is a topic that has come up several times over the last 20 years that PHP has been around as even an extension that implements is in the PECL repository. Jan Bøhmer proposed to include user space based operator overloading for PHP eight dot zero. I asked him about a specific use cases: Jan Böhmer 2:46 Higher mathematical objects like complex numbers vectors, something like tensors, maybe something like the string component of Symfony, you can simply concatenate this string object with a normal string using the concat operator and doesn't have to use a function to cause this. Most basically this should behave, similar to a basic string variable or not, like, something completely different. Derick Rethans 3:16 For some issues raised during the RFC process and Jan explains to the most notable criticisms. Jan Böhmer 3:21 First of all, there are some principles of operator overloading in general. So there's also criticism that it could be used for doing some very weird things with operator overloading. There was mentioned C++ where the shift left shift operator is used for outputting a string to the console. Or you could do whatever you want inside this handler so if somebody would want to save files, or modify a file in inside an operator overloading wouldn't be possible. It's, in most cases, function will be more clear what it does. Derick Rethans 4:01 He also explained his main use case: Jan Böhmer 4:04 Operator overloading should, in my opinion, only be used for things that are related to math, or creating custom types that behave similar to build types. Derick Rethans 4:15 In the end, the operator overloading RFC was voted on. But ultimately declined, although there was a slim majority for it. Derick Rethans 4:24 In Episode 44, I spoke with Máté Kocsis about the right round properties RFC and asked him what the concept behind them was. He explained: Máté Kocsis 4:33 Write once properties can only be initialized, but not modified afterwards. So you can either define a default value for them, or assign them a value, but you can't modify them later, so any other attempts to modify, unset, increment, or decrement them would cause an exception to be thrown. Basically this RFC would bring Java's final properties, or C#'s read only properties to PHP. However, contrary to how these languages work, this RFC would allow lazy initialization, it means that these properties don't necessarily have to be initialized until the object construction ends, so you can do that later in the object's lifecycle. Derick Rethans 5:22 Write once properties was not the only concept that he had explored before writing this RFC. We discussed these in the same episode: Máté Kocsis 5:31 The first one was to follow Java and C# and require all right, once properties to be initialized until the object construction ends, and this is what we talked about before. The counter arguments were that it's not easy to implement in PHP, the approach is unnecessarily strict. The other possibility is to let unlimited writes to these properties, until object construction ends and then do not allow any writes, but positive effect of this solution is that it plays well with bigger class hierarchies, where possibly multiple constructors are involved, but it still has the same problems as the previous approach. And finally the property accessors could be an alternative to write once properties. Although, in my opinion, these two features are not really related to each other, but some say that property accessors could alone, prevent some unintended changes from the outside, and they say that maybe it might be enough. I don't share this sentiment. So, in my opinion, unintended changes can come from the inside, so from the private or protected scope, and it's really easy to circumvent visibility rules in PHP. There are quite some possibilities. That's why it's a good way to protect our invariance. Derick Rethans 7:02 In the end this RFC was the client, as it did not wait to two thirds majority required with an even split between the proponents and the opponents. Derick Rethans 7:11 Following on from Máté's proposal to add functionality to our object orientation syntax. I spoken Episode 49 with Jakob Givoni on a suggested addition COPA, or in full: contact object property assignments Jakob explains why he was suggesting to add this. Jakob Givoni 7:28 As always possible for a long time why PHP didn't have object literals, and I looked into it, and I saw that it was not for lack of trying. Eventually I decided to give it a go with a different approach. The basic problem is simply to be able to construct, populate, and send an object in one single expression in a block, also called inline. It can be like an alternative to an associative array: you give the data, a well defined structure, the signature of the data is all documented in the class. Derick Rethans 8:01 Of course people abuse associative arrays for these things at the moment, right. Why are you particularly interested in addressing this deficiency as you see it? Jakob Givoni 8:11 Well I think it's a common task. It's something I've been missing as I said inline objects, obviously literals for a long time and I think it's a lot of people have been looking for something like this. And also it seemed like it was an opportunity that seemed to be an fairly simple grasp. Derick Rethans 8:28 I also asked them what the main use case for this was. Jakob Givoni 8:32 Briefly, as I mentioned, they're data transfer objects, value objects, those simple associative arrays that are sometimes used as argument backs to constructors when you create objects. Some people have given some examples where they would like to use this to dispatch events or commands to some different handlers. And whenever you want to create, populate, and and use the object in one go, COPA should help you. Derick Rethans 9:04 COPA did also not make it into PHP eight with the RFC being the client nearly unanimously. The proposals by both Máté and Jakob where meant to improve PHP object syntax by helping out with common tasks. The implementation ideas of what they were trying to accomplish were not particularly lined up. This spurred on Larry Garfield to write a blog post titled: object ergonomics, which are discussed with him in Episode 51. I first asked him why he wrote this article: Larry Garfield 9:33 As you said, there's been a lot of discussion around improving PHP's general user experience of working with objects in PHP, where there's definitely room for improvement, no question. And I found a lot of these to be useful in their own right, but also very narrow, and narrow in ways that solve the immediate problem, but could get in the way of solving larger problems later on down the line. I went into this with an attitude of: Okay, we can kind of piecemeal attack certain parts of the problem space, or we can take a step back and look at the big picture and say: All right, here's all of the pain points we have, what can we do that would solve, not just this one pain point, but let us solve multiple pain points with a single change, or these two changes together solve this other pain point as well, or, you know, how can we do this in a way that is not going to interfere with later development that we talked about. We know we want to do, but hasn't been done yet. Are we not paint ourselves into a corner by thinking too narrow. Derick Rethans 10:40 The article mentions many different categories and possible solutions. I can't really sum these up in this episode because it would be too long. Although, Larry did not end up proposing RFC based on this article, it can be called responsible for constructor property promotions, which I discussed with Nikita Popov in Episode 53 and Named Arguments which are discussed with Nikita in Episode 59. Both of these made it into PHP 8.zero and cover some of the same functionality that Jakob's COPA RFC covered. I will touch on the new features that did make it into PHP 8.0 in next week's episode. There are two more episodes where discuss features that did not make it into PHP eight zero, but these are still under discussion and hence might make it into next year's PHP eight dot one. In Episode 57, I spoke with Ralph Schindler about his conditional code flow statements RFC. After the introduction, I asked what he specifically was wanting to introduce. Ralph Schindler 11:36 This is, you know, it's, it's very closely related to what in computer science is called a guard clause. And I used that phrase lightly when I originally brought it up on the mailing list but it's very close in line to that it's not necessarily exactly that, in terms of the syntax. In terms of like when you speak about it in the PHP code sense, it really is sort of a change in the statement. So putting the return before the if, that's really what it is. So a guard clause, it's important to know what that is is it's a way to interrupt the flow of control Derick Rethans 12:08 Syntax proposals are fairly controversial, and I asked Ralph about his opinions of the type of feedback that he received. Ralph Schindler 12:15 The smallest changes always get the most feedback, because there's such a wide audience for a change like this. Derick Rethans 12:23 The last feature that did not make it into PHP eight zero was property write/set visibility, which I discussed with André Rømcke in Episode 63. I asked him what his RFC was all about: Derick Rethans 12:34 What is the main problem that you're wanting to solve with what this RFC proposes? André Rømcke 12:40 The high level use case is in order to let people, somehow, define that their property should not be writable. This is many benefits in, when you go API's in order to say that yeah this property should be readable. But I don't want anyone else but myself to write it. And then you have different forms of this, you have either the immutable case where you, ideally would like to only specify that it's only written to in constructor, maybe unset in destructor, maybe dealt with in clone and so on, but besides that, it's not writable. I'm not going into that yet, but I'm kind of, I was at least trying to lay the foundation for it by allowing the visibility or the access rights to be asynchoronus, which I think is a building block from moving forward with immutability, read only, and potentially also accessors but even, but that's a special case. Derick Rethans 13:39 At the time of our discussion he already realized that it would be likely postponed to PHP eight dot one as it was close to feature freeze, and the RFC wasn't fully thought out yet. I suspect we'll hear more about it in 2021. With this I would like to conclude this whirlwind tour of things that were proposed but did not make it in. Next week I'll be back with all the stuff that was added to PHP for the PHP eight zero celebrations. Stay tuned. "He was an Egyptian by birth and a great Egyptian ascetic. As a boy, he visited various spiritual teachers and gathered proven experience as a bee gathers honey from flowers. Pimen once begged the elder Paul to take him to St Païsius. Seeing him, Païsius said: 'This child will save many; the hand of God is on him.' In time, Pimen became a monk and drew two of his brothers to monasticism. Their mother once came to see her sons, but Pimen would not allow her in, asking through the door: 'Which do you want more: to see us here and now, or in the other world in eternity?' Their mother went away joy-fully, saying: 'If I will see you for certain there, I don't need to see you here.' In the monastery of these three brothers, governed by the eldest, Abba Anoub, the rule was as follows: at night, four hours were passed in manual work, four hours in sleep and four in reading the Psalter. The day was passed, from morning to noon, in alternate work and prayer, from mid-day to Vespers in reading and after Vespers they prepared their meal, the only one in the twenty--four hours, and this usually of some sort of cabbage. Pimen himself said about their life: 'We ate what was to hand. No-one ever said: "Give me something else", or "I won't eat that". In that way, we spent our whole life in silence and peace.' He lived in the fifth century, and entered peacefully into rest in great old age." (Prologue)   His name means "shepherd". Many of his words can be found in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers.

Decide if you will be limitless in your experiences for this day, or will you limit your own experiences and being through the the ego's finite persepctive shrouded in ignorance and insecurity. We have the power to choose, and do choose the path of our day...by what we entertain in our minds. When you rise, do you meditate or practice Oneness, grab your phone, turn on the TV, worry about work, school, bills, a relationship, or some other physical routine such as urinate, brush your teeth, or get something to drink.  When you first rise, take control of your energy and decide which I will unfold your day. I Am That I Am ~ Exodus 3:14; With God All Things Are Possible ~ Matthew 19:26; Be Still And Know That I Am God ~ Psalm 46:10 These powerful verses can bestow upon the course of your day infinite possibilities. The Magic is in Your Mind. These verses are imbued with the Power of Creativity and Imagination. We limit and imprison ourselves through our mental perspective: training, education, conditioning, experiences and exposure. Our lack of Faith, ignorance, and insecurity, often creates a painful or unproductive present in which we feel totally helpless, and even hopeless at times. Ignorance and Insecurity...we don't know and we're afraid of what we don't know. And many of us live our life from the perspective of a lack of knowing about Self and God, and lack of Faith which translates into fear. Free yourself from this limited perspective by spending time/meditating with God/Oneness, ruminating on God, Life, and Nature, and knowing that there is nothing to fear. Think about it. Many of us only trust our own judgment and we are finite in our physical egoistic capacity. Join today's episode to learn more about how to be accountable for your reality.

Look you. Every day I'm doing this podcast, the least you could do is listen to it if you want. Every day of the Edinburgh Fringe I mean, it just seems like forever. I'm Lee Kyle, a real rotter. This is perhaps the only podcast that is an interview and a kitchen sink drama with a fake professor in it. Today we meet Chris Cantrill out of sketch double duo act A Very Delightful Sausage. He is boss mate. Boss. Subscribe to 'Which is the best' for more of this shit.

Back once again with the ill behaviour, it's me, Lee Kyle (A sexy man with a substandard dinky) doing another episode of my podcast that I'm doing every single day of the Edinburgh Fringe. It's half interview/half soap opera, where I ask comedians questions that you would be asked if you want to get into Oxbridge, while at the same time, we delve into the marital difficulties of an elderly professor (Played by me). It's gone a bit odd. Speaking of which, today's guest is one of my favourite folk, dinosaur obsessed former professional high jumper (Note to self - check if this is true) Harriet Dyer! Go see me show and also hers, what a day that would be. Like this? Subscribe to 'Which is the best?' wherever you get podcasts, except Spotify. You have to draw a line somewhere.

Today's guest is Hannah Walker, who, once you listen to this podcast, you'll be amazed that she was ever allowed to play Snow White... Gavin Webster is the king of the service stations. Ask anyone, they'll tell you that. But is he clever enough to get into Oxbridge University? Only one way to fine out, by getting him on this podcast that I'm doing every bloody day of the Edinburgh Fringe where I ask him some questions to decide just that. So I did. I'm Lee Kyle by the way, come to my show if you want, although I'm off til Friday for my anniversary so I'm currently not bothered so go to Gavin's in the meantime. I've seen it, it has a good bit with a finger puppet. He's the king of the service stations for crying out loud. Like this nonsense? Enjoy this podcast, it's the latest in my daily podcast at the Edinburgh Fringe where I ask comedians a question from a book I found. It's possibly the only podcast around about comedians asking intellectual theoretical questions that is also a daily soap opera about the life of an elderly promiscuous lecturer and his semi-estranged wife who smells faintly of egg. It's gone a bit odd. Today, we meet Ross Leslie, Scotland's finest man. He looks a bit like me but with more kids. Bless his mighty spunk. Every day of the Edinburgh Fringe sees me (Lee Kyle (Comedian and former semi-pro Cowboy)) put out an episode of unusual podcast 'The Oxbridge Entrance Exam' where I ask a different comedian questions that you may be asked if you try to get into Oxford or Cambridge University. I do it in the guise of a stuffy old professor who is having marital problems. It seems to have all gone a bit odd. Today's guest is Stuart Goldsmith, who you may know from doing stand up comedy. He also hosts The Comedian's Comedian podcast and was a top class sprinter at under-15s level (I imagine, I never asked, the time was never right to do so.) I'm so tired, this month is long. A new version of this podcast every day of the Edinburgh Fringe. It sounded like a good idea. AND IT IS! Or isn't. I'm tired. I'm Lee Kyle (pertinent information), I found a book, it has questions in, they are questions they ask if you want to go to Oxford or Cambridge. I ask them to comedians as the character of an old professor who is having marital problems. He's still drinking. It's Che Burnley today, one of the best comics around who is named after a Northern town and a socialist revolutionary, probably second only to Chernov Keswick. More of this? Putterman picked out quotes from UConn coaches and read them to Brodeur and his challenger, Kevin Vellturo, and there was a bit more drama as the two Berlin High/UConn alums battled it out.
