There's a book out that's been making waves in the stand up comedy scene. The book is called Finding Your Comic Genius: An in-depth guide to the art of stand-up comedy. I heard a lot of buzz from Finnish comedians about this, so I bought it. I was blown away. I've read a lot on comedy writing, done 45 episodes of comedy writing podcast, and - of course - written a million jokes myself, too. Still, reading this book was a revelation to me. Nothing has improved my writing in a day more than reading this book. So I was all hyped about this. I reached out to the author Adam Bloom. He accepted my invite to join me on the podcast, which is a great honour. We had an inspirational and – most of all – educational discussion on the ins and outs of writing stand up comedy. Adam Bloom is a multi-award-winning stand-up comedian and writer. As well as making over 40 national TV appearances in Britain and several in The U.S. and Canada, he has also ghostwritten for 62 comedians and has worked on 29 projects with an Oscar nominee. He has written and performed three series of “The Problem with Adam Bloom” for BBC Radio 4. You can get the book on Amazon on paperback and Kindle. No, let me rephrase it. You should get the book on Amazon on paperback or Kindle. Amazon UK / Amazon US / Amazon DE

Sorry for the delay, I've been a bit sick but this episode is worth the wait... ADAM BLOOM! Adam (@adambloomie2) is a veteran of the UK comedy circuit & television for the last 25 years who's never stopped evolving his act, his joke writing is legendary and he's basically an encyclopaedia of comedy wisdom. I got him on because he grew up in the suburbs of London, moved to Soho, then to Green Park and finally to Zone 7 - before getting back in the mix in Crouch End. He's the first comedian I've met who won't leave London even though he's got 2 kids. He rocked up wearing a flat cap, smart watch and vaping - we get to that - and I ask him why Zone 7 didn't work for him.  Chatting gentrification he mentions A Tribe Called Quest - We The People. Merry Christmas JerkOffs, or however you celebrated the holiday. Sorry for the delay but we're back with a banger.  Jarred Christmas (@jarredchristmas) joins me, a good name for a good man. One of the first comedians from New Zealand to move to the UK, seen all over the TV and live circuit, he's one of the good guys and a pleasure to chat to about how it used to be moving over here. He kicks off with a quick review of Aquaman (hint: he didn't buy it), then talks his Dad never taking a sick day, having a rusty haka, seeing Adam Hills, Adam Bloom, Boothby Graffoe, Johnny Vegas & Mighty Boosh in one day at Melbourne International Comedy Festival, being a charity mugger before people hated them, why Australia is too big to be loyal, the rise of Flight of the Conchords, how being a Kiwi helped him in the UK and getting a parking ticket to listen to the All Blacks. Also, I was completely wrong about Sam Neill, he's from New Zealand and still lives in New Zealand. My bad. In this modern society we live in, everything’s fast-paced and hyperconnected. It’s highly likely that we undergo stress – may it be a financial turmoil, a career challenge, a relationship problem, or a health condition. So, in the first ever episode of the Serial Stress Killer Podcast, your host, Chris Hatchett, aims to enlighten you on how the podcast could help you unleash the hidden Serial Stress Killer powers within you and fight every stress head-on. Discover how being a Serial Stress Killer could help you prevent stress, improve your health and well-being, and motivate you to take actions on your life goals. Chris shares his personal stories and his strategies when dealing with stress. He also lets you in some details on what you should watch out for on the next episodes. And, don’t miss the first strategy that Chris shares, ASK (Assess, Strategize, and Kill), so you could finally start your journey as a stress killer. KEY TAKEAWAYS What is a Serial Stress Killer? “A person who is able to continually kill the stress in their life by using a predictable set of proven methodologies to ensure continued success.” Who is Christopher James Hatchett? Chris is just a normal guy who wants to share his experiences, what he has learnt, and how he dealt with stress. He experienced kinds of stress that had catastrophic effects on his life. He thought he could take everything life throws at him but he was wrong. He didn’t reach out to people even though he could have. With all the struggles with stress, he’s understood more about the physiology of stress. He’s understood how it could sever ties and know down dreams. He’s a Type 1 diabetic. He undergoes stressful situations especially if his blood glucose levels drop below a certain point. Things you should be excited about on the upcoming episodes of the Serial Stress Killer Podcast: A lot of effective strategies for you depending on what you’re going through. Different guests (experts, influencers, etc.) will be featured – Adam Bloom, Millie Kendall, Paula Ruane, and many more! The latest news and research about stress. When you feel that sensation of stress in your body, ASK – Assess/Analyse, Strategize, and Kill Stress Assess – What is the cause of the stress? Strategize – Decide if it’s in your control. Could you do something about the situation? Make a list of possible actions. Kill – Pick one from the list of actions and execute. BEST MOMENTS “Stress is a precursor to many more severe mental health issues.” “If you want to overcome your stress, then you have to take matters into our own hands… Learn to take control. Make it your personal mission to understand its every move… You want to be one step ahead at all times… And when it rears its ugly head, you need to be ready for it with a killer move.” “I’d love to tell you that I have 100% managed to overcome in my life but it would be a lie. It does come back from time to time.” “I understand how the effects of stress run far beyond the physical and how stress literally seep into every tiny little crack of our lives.” “Stress is a response to a trigger. Stress is a response to your perception.” ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.” CONTACT METHOD Contact the show Website: serialstresskiller.com Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller Email: admin@serialstresskiller.com Support the show https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller

There’s nothing like a deadline that could get you hyped and be doing what you need to be doing. That’s according to Adam Bloom, our guest for today’s episode of the Serial Stress Killer Podcast. Adam Bloom is an award-winning stand-up comedian and has been touring around the world to perform. Adam Bloom chats with Chris Hackett, your host, on how he manages to be as funny and successful as he can be in his profession without being dragged down by stress. Discover the ins and outs of the professional comedy world in the countries he’s been. Adam acknowledges that humour can be universal or local. And, that’s what Adam is great at – to be able to transcend through the difference and indifference of people. Adam sees to it that he gives his best and refuses to be affected by the pressure in every performance he does. Listen as he shares how he ‘negates’ stress and how he manages to see it the other way around to make it beneficial for his career and day-to-day life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Adam Bloom shares his stand-up comedy experience in different countries. He compares how different the humour is for different cultures. The language barrier is a big factor that Adam has been trying to beat to effectively communicate his punch lines. He shares that one time, he had to memorize a one-liner in the foreign language to get the most out of the audience's time. In what way does stress manifest itself in professional comedy? Adam shares that making sure that putting up a great show on time is sometimes difficult to manage especially if some technical and organizational problems happen. Adam does a few gigs a night so to arrive early for the gigs and not get the schedule tangled up is a priority of his. Don't let stress affect your performance. Adam says that once you've alleviated the stress and do what you got to do, there's a feeling of relief and fulfilment. It's more different when at the very start you never knew you could do it. Sleep is very important for us to stay healthy and not get stressed. It’s a form of reset which clears your head and makes you gain the energy back needed for the next day. Adam ‘negates’ the effects of stress. For example, when he’s about to catch the earliest train, he’ll see to it that he gets there 3-5 minutes early but if he, by chance, misses it, he uses the time to get some coffee. At least, he still gets to arrive on time wherever he’s going. What techniques does Adam use to lessen the stress during a stand-up gig? “If you can’t do anything, you just have to stop thinking about it. and if you stop thinking about it, you stopped being stressed.” – Adam BEST MOMENTS "That mind field... you're walking through your gig knowing that at any given moment, a joke will suddenly fail. You're not in your comfort zone because you're going, "Does this work?" So, the second night you're there is great because you find out what you did wrong." – Adam "Being put under pressure means you have to do something... If you cannot do anything, then stress is wasted energy." – Adam "I'd rather be stressed than bored and I'd rather be under pressure than bored." – Adam “If you have the ability to clear your head, it’s a really really powerful thing.” – Chris VALUABLE RESOURCES Adam Bloom Official Website - adam-bloom.com/ ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.” ABOUT THE GUEST (ADAM BLOOM) Adam Bloom is an award-winning stand-up comedian and writer both in the UK and abroad. He has been in the business for over 20 years, during that time he has appeared on many TV shows and entertained audiences across the world.
