The reality of the message comes from Michael himself, who was entwined in the life of drugs and traveled a troubling road to get to his future.  Throughout the country, Michael now leads a team of talented speakers who present a realistic and powerful prevention message.  His “no holds back” message resonates well with student assemblies, faculty and parents. Stay In Your Lane Media, the media arm of Steered Straight, was founded by Michael in 2012, and has produced four award winning documentaries, Kids Are Dying, An American Epidemic, Marijuana X and Road to Recovery. Using her technical knowledge of natural language processing systems, Seneff set out to untangle the biological literature to see if it was possible to identify an environmental contaminant that could be responsible for the exploding numbers of diagnoses. To her surprise, there was a robust correlation with widespread use of glyphosate, an herbicide that is the main ingredient of the Monsanto product Round-up. We talk about her path to uncovering the correlation, a potential biochemical mechanism for how it could be involved in so many disorders, and the controversy that has swirled after she went public with her findings. In 2020, the country saw a spike in mass shootings. Statistics show that approximately 124 people lose their lives to gun violence every day in America. Even more shocking is that 12 of those 124 are children. Those numbers continue to rise. The question is, why do 90 percent of all mass shootings happen in the US? That's a huge number to consider. You're five times less likely to die from drowning than a gunshot in this country. In this video, I'll talk about why gun violence is the leading cause of death among children and teens in America. As well as how the underlying problems causing it are rotten to the core.Mass Shooting: An American Epidemic________________________________________If you liked the video, subscribe to my channel!https://www.youtube.com/c/DerrickKirk?sub_confirmation=1 You can also follow me on:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/WHEREISDKIRK/ INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/dkirkforus/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mythoughts_with_derrickSNAPCHAT: https://bit.ly/3LvANda Visit my website: http://derrickkirk.com/ Show Your Support: https://bit.ly/3S2mr6m Support the show

In this episode, Joe interviews the founder and CEO of MindMed, JR Rahn. This one's a bit different and plays out perhaps unsurprisingly, as Joe's well-established talking points against the drug war and DEA, legalize-everything stance, and all-inclusive focus on the many branches of drug-use (medical/therapeutic use, religious use, celebration/partying, inner work and exploration, and creative problem-solving) meet an addict businessman whose life was saved by psychedelics and who doesn't want to talk about the battle but instead wants to push forward, all-in on the method he thinks will get people in need the medicine that could save them the fastest: not putting so much effort towards state-by-state decriminalization and demonizing the DEA, but instead, working with them towards medicalization, and telling them what we want by passing measures that allocate more capital and resources towards infrastructure that will help people.  Rahn talks about what MindMed is working on: the first approved commercial drug trial studying the effects of microdosing LSD on adult ADHD, and their more long-term plan, developing a trip-neutralizing drug that would be a safer option than Xanax for ending a challenging trip and getting people back to stability. He also discusses the importance of scalability and lowering healthcare costs, changing anecdotal evidence into real science, and his life-saving (and cheaper) hope of patients being able to work with therapists in their homes rather than in expensive, anxiety-increasing medical environments.  Notable Quotes “As a society, we need to prioritize treatment and we don’t. ...It’s just completely illogical to me that, as a society, we stare it in its face every day and we blame the opioid crisis and we blame drug addiction for our crime and all these things, yet, as a society, we don’t allocate the resources necessary to solve it.”“I think there’s that Forbes article where I was like, ‘Oh, I want nothing to do with the decrim people.’ I definitely said that, but that’s not really what I meant. What I meant was: if we’re going to make psychedelics into a medicine, and we’re going to make it scalable and accessible, I think we should be having a federal conversation about it, and to me, the most efficient pathway to do that is the FDA. And I’m concerned that we’re going to go through this process of state-by-state legalization that happened in the cannabis days and we’re going to get some pretty unsavory people involved in this community ...and I’m just concerned that, if it happens in that manner, it becomes a political battle, and it doesn’t become: How do we help people? How do we get medicine to folks that are in need?” “If we’re going to get people willing to healing themselves and get over the stigma, I think it’s important to have the feature of: ‘Look, we have the emergency stop button. Your therapist can press it if they need to when they feel that you’ve reached a point that is not good anymore.’ And I think that, ultimately (and we’ll have to study this), it might make the experience even more therapeutic. ...They should be walking into a cocoon and we’re taking care of them. They should not be walking into [a room] or sitting on their couch, going, ‘Holy shit, am I going to die?’” “I’d love to get to the point where we have destigmatized these substances enough in society that people value them for what they are, and I think we will be a much better society when we get to that point, but I don’t think we can do it all at once. People tried that- didn’t work. I would just hate to watch the potential for so many people that are actually suffering from mental health and addiction [to] not get access to this treatment because we went too fast.”  “Psychedelicstoday.com: best podcast in psychedelics.” Links Mindmed.co Newswire.ca: MindMed Expands Psychedelic Microdosing Division, Adds Groundbreaking Study Evaluating LSD Microdosing Through Next-Gen Digital Clinical Markers Mindmed.co: MindMed Develops LSD Neutralizer Technology To Shorten and Stop LSD Trips Forbes.com: This New York City Pharma Startup Wants To Turn LSD Into An FDA-Approved Medicine For Anxiety Disorder (the notorious "Forbes article") Rahn’s Twitter follow-up (scroll up to read the full convo) ADHD Nation: Children, Doctors, Big Pharma, and the Making of an American Epidemic, by Alan Schwarz Psychcongress.com: Suicide Risk Elevated After Psychiatric Hospital Stay Drugabuse.gov: Benzodiazepines and Opioids (increased risk by combining them) About JR Rahn JR is a former Silicon Valley tech executive who realized that transformational solutions to mental illness and addiction might lie in psychedelic medicines. The United States population is equivalent to 4.27% of the total world population, yet we consume 90% of the opioids on earth. Every single day we lose 150 Americans to opioid related deaths. It’s an epidemic that is ravishing our nation, and one that is little understood. This week, moderator John M. Viola sits down with longtime friend Dr. John Rosa, the founder of 'Overdose Free America', a leading voice in integrative medicine and a surrogate to the White House Opioid Task Force, who will explain both the terrifying scale of this crisis, and his Italian American approach to tackling it. They’ll explore the evolutionary tendencies at the heart of opioid addiction, and the long and checkered history of opioids, big pharma, and how these drugs have become the number one cause of death for Americans under the age of fifty. With 650,000 opioid prescriptions being written a day, and hundreds of billions of dollars spent on advertising and lobbying annually, ending this plague often looks like a battle against insurmountable odds... but could the answer lie with the Italian American perspective on family? This is an episode destined to open eyes and ears to a cataclysmic national emergency, and one that might just change the way you see this grave issue.

The Boss Bully - How-To Survive and Thrive! I have been bullied by almost every boss I’ve ever had. Am I a victim-type? No Way! I am a strong, outspoken woman. I’m a second-generation American, a proud Latina, with a Master’s Degree in Communications, well-read, and digitally advanced.  Maybe that is why I’ve been bullied. And you know what, I don’t care why I was bullied. I care about those of us who are at the end of the Bully Stick. I’m not going to call us victims. We are Bullied! Period.  This is Episode 7 of Wanting Ice Water because sometimes work feels like you are in hell and "There's people in Hell who want Ice Water" and they ain't getting it. I began researching Bullies in the workplace for the Wanting Ice Water Series.  I feel it's all part of communications in the digital age because communicating with a bully is tough. Almost Next to Impossible.  I'm here to share stories and offer information. It's all about Self-Help! Do you know there is a Workplace Bullying Institute? I found it online. They conducted a study of the issue in 2017. I will link to their study below.  I will also link to information on the Healthy Workplace Bill, this legislation is at the center of a grassroots campaign to get the proposed bill enacted. It's all about Bullying and how this "American Epidemic" is making us sick. I agree! Totally. IF YOU ARE BEING BULLIED, HANG IN THERE SISTERS AND BROS! Please subscribe and share. Love, gloria Here are some findings from the Workplace Bullying Institute: • 19% of Americans are bullied, another 19% witness it• 61% of Americans are aware of abusive conduct in the workplace• 60.4 million Americans are affected by it• 70% of perpetrators are men; 60% of targets are women (THIS IS ME)• Hispanics are the most frequently bullied race (THIS IS ME TOO!)• 61% of bullies are bosses, the majority (63%) operate alone• 40% of bullied targets are believed to suffer adverse health effects Links: Workplace Bullying Institute: https://www.workplacebullying.org/wbiresearch/wbi-2017-survey/ Healthy Workplace Bill: https://healthyworkplacebill.org/ Music: Thank you for the music that runs under some parts of this episode: Bay Breeze by FortyThr33 https://soundcloud.com/fortythr33-43 Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported— CC BY 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b... Hold On is tackling one particular issue head on—the abandonment of one’s faith. In the process of coming to understand this issue, many more will be addressed. In episode one, Jake sets out to quantify just how big of a problem this is in America. There are many researchers and statisticians who have written about the large number who have left the faith, but there is one author who has gone beyond the numbers and examined the stories of those who have left. David Sanford began exposing what he called an epidemic in 2009 with the release of If God Disappears. The book and corresponding blog-site went beyond the stats and identified the root causes. His research led him to discover nine major faith wreckers. Rather than numbers, David speaks about stories which places a much more compassion understanding to the subject. In 2009, he wrote there was thirty-five million stories in America. By 2015, the number had risen to forty-two million. Jake and David work off of that 2015 number, but Pew Research has now suggested it could be as high as sixty-seven million today. To put that large number in perspective, it has to be understood that its 14% of the entire American population. The issue is huge and few churches and Christian leaders are addressing it. As David does in his books, he continues to point to the real-life human component. He simply asks the question are we listening to their stories. If you want to hear the statistic scope of this problem along with human aspect you must check this episode out. David’s latest book Love Your Neighbor: Surprise It’s Not What You Think is available now.

The groundbreaking and definitive account of the widespread misdiagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder—and how its unchecked growth over half a century has made ADHD one of the most controversial conditions in medicine, with serious effects on children, adults, and society. More than 1 in 7 American children get diagnosed with ADHD—three times what experts have said is appropriate—meaning that millions of kids are misdiagnosed and taking medications such as Adderall or Concerta for a psychiatric condition they probably do not have. The numbers rise every year. And still, many experts and drug companies deny any cause for concern. In fact, they say that adults and the rest of the world should embrace ADHD and that its medications will transform their lives. In ADHD Nation, Alan Schwarz examines the roots and the rise of this cultural and medical phenomenon: The father of ADHD, Dr. Keith Conners, spends fifty years advocating drugs like Ritalin before realizing his role in what he now calls “a national disaster of dangerous proportions”; a troubled young girl and a studious teenage boy get entangled in the growing ADHD machine and take medications that backfire horribly; and big Pharma egregiously over-promotes the disorder and earns billions from the mishandling of children (and now adults). While demonstrating that ADHD is real and can be medicated when appropriate, Schwarz sounds a long-overdue alarm and urges America to address this growing national health crisis.

Child and family therapist Dr Marilyn Wedge talks to Craig Barfoot about her latest book, A Disease Called Childhood: Why ADHD Became an American Epidemic.    Over the course of her career as a child and family therapist, Marilyn Wedge has witnessed an 'astronomical rise' in the number of children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).  Until 1995 she had hardly heard of ADHD, but over the following decades the number of children on medication for ADHD grew and grew until now 13% of boys and 5% of girls in the US - 6 million children -  are on prescription drugs (mainly Ritalin and Adderall) with that diagnosis.   But this approach is not shared by other countries,  A child in the US is 8 times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than in France, and 80 times more likely than in Finland!  Dr Wedge says this is because in those countries, when a child is exhibiting difficult behaviour they look at the context - perhaps the child is unhappy at school, or seeing their parents fight at home - and they address the problem rather than medicate the child.  She points out that in the US a child can be taken to the doctor, and receive a diagnosis of ADHD and a prescription for drugs in 15 minutes, while in France the observation and consultations are likely to take 8 hours.   Why? because 'biological psychiatry has taken over the field of psychiatry in the US'  says Dr Wedge.  The view that the problem is in the child's brain or nervous system, rather than in his or her environment was set out for the first time in DSM 3 in 1980, and Dr Wedge points the finger at the pharmaceutical companies for this approach.   Dr Wedge argues that psychiatry needs to completely change it approach, and look at the child's environment, offering help to parents through parenting classes etc.   Website mentioned in podcast: http://www.propublica.org/article/dollars-for-docs-the-top-earners   Marylin's blog on Psychology today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/suffer-the-children   Photo:  Family Portrait by Jörg Schubert
