*This is the Free Content version of my interview with Dr. John E. Browning. To access the entire episode, please consider becoming a Tier 1 ‘Gates of Argonath' member, or you can purchase this episode for a one-time fee. My guest this month is Dr. John E. Browning. A professor in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area, John Edgar Browning, Ph.D. has contracted or published 20 academic and popular trade books as well as over 100 shorter works on subjects that cluster around cultural studies, critical media literacy, Dracula, vampires, monstrosity, and horror. Included among his work in film and media studies is his decade-and-a-half-long ethnographic fieldwork with the human or real vampire subculture (a topic in which there are perhaps five scholars worldwide). In addition to academic venues, Browning has published on the real vampire subculture in public forums such as The Atlantic (2015) and Discover Magazine (2015 and 2018), and his unique expertise in this area has helped facilitate several public appearances as a guest scholar on, or service as a consultant for, over two dozen television and streaming networks, professional podcasts, and radio programs, including Discovery channel, National Geographic, Animal Planet, AMC Visionaries: Eli Roth's History of Horror, History channel, Disney+, Netflix, Discover Magazine's “It's Only Science” podcast, Ripley's Believe It or Not, NPR, The Howard Stern Show network, BBC Radio, RTÉ—Ireland's National Television and Radio Broadcaster, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Georgia Public Broadcasting, and SLATE among others. In this interview, John and I discuss his research into the Real Vampire Community. He talks about his motivation to begin looking into this subculture, as well as what he's learned over the years. As this topic somewhat overlaps with my own research into the Otherkin community, I take the opportunity to ‘compare notes' so to speak, and ask questions to gain more clarity on this group. John also discusses to what degree contemporary expressions of the vampire in popular culture have influenced the real vampire community, and how his research has contributed to changing perceptions of this subculture. He talks about his term ‘defiant culture' as it relates to people who have been labeled ‘Other' or ‘deviant' and also mentions how his research has helped forensic professionals that deal with crimes that seem, on the surface, to involve people who label themselves ‘vampires'. We also touch upon the Temple of the Vampire, a group that is viewed as a religious organization, and how this group relates to the larger vampire community in the US. In this episode, I unpack the common misconceptions and mislabelling of introverts. As a leadership trainer and coach, I often encounter scepticism about my own introversion due to widespread misunderstandings that equate/conflates it with traits like shyness, social anxiety, or even arrogance. These labels can significantly impact mental health and self-esteem, especially for those lacking resilience. Through this discussion, I aim to shed light on these myths and provide clarity around what being an introvert truly means. Dear listener, introversion is not synonymous with negative stereotypes such as lack of ambition or antisocial behaviour. We introverts have unique strengths including deep thinking and thoughtful listening, which are often undervalued in society's extraversion-biased lens. By understanding these distinctions better, we empower ourselves to harness our quiet power effectively both personally and professionally, and flourish without societal constraints. ** Key Points ** ⤷ Introversion is often misunderstood, mislabelled, conflated ⤷ Empower ourselves to overcome societal biases ⤷ Advocating for accuracy #MythsAboutIntroverts #Introverts #FlourishingIntroverts *** Resources *** Visit https://hub.flourishingintroverts.com/resourcesp for tools and resources mentioned during the podcast.

How do you classify Angels? Is any system correct or is it all anarchy? --- Join and support the community: https://www.creationspaths.com/ In this discussion, Charlie and Brian explore the enigmatic nature of angels, their classifications, and their roles across different belief systems. They examine historical and spiritual perspectives, such as the celestial hierarchies of Pseudo-Dionysius and Hermetic Kabbalah, discussing their implications in mystical and magical practices. By highlighting the fluidity and context-dependent nature of angelic systems, they argue for embracing multiple paradigms rather than rigidly adhering to a single framework. The conversation also touches on the differences between angels, otherworldly beings, and demons, emphasizing the necessity of understanding the purpose and intent behind engaging with these energies. The book is a well-researched and scholarly presentation of The Gospel of the Four(Mathew, Mark, Luke, John). In this conversation, Tim and April discuss the dangers of Christian nationalism and the conflation of allegiance to Jesus and allegiance to empire. They highlight the cognitive dissonance and mental gymnastics that many Christian nationalists engage in to maintain their beliefs. They also address the issue of authoritarianism and the false equivalence between progressive and conservative agendas. The conversation concludes with a discussion on the need for critical thinking and the importance of calling out propaganda and misinformation. Takeaways The conversation covers a range of topics, from personal experiences to popular TV shows and the 4th of July. The hosts discuss the rise of Christian nationalism and its dangers to democracy. They react to the trailer for 'God's Not Dead 5' and highlight the propaganda and misinformation present in the film. The hosts emphasize the importance of critical thinking and questioning beliefs, rather than blindly accepting dogma. Christian nationalism often involves a conflation of allegiance to Jesus and allegiance to empire, leading to a distorted view of faith and politics. Many Christian nationalists engage in cognitive dissonance and mental gymnastics to maintain their beliefs, often denying or ignoring the harmful aspects of their ideology. Authoritarianism is not exclusive to any political ideology, but it is important to recognize the power dynamics and propaganda tactics used by different groups. Critical thinking and the ability to recognize and challenge propaganda and misinformation are crucial in navigating political and religious discourse. It is important to call out and challenge harmful beliefs and actions, even within one's own religious or political community. The solo piano: a sound that's been evolving for over 300 years. It's perfectly happy all by itself, but it also plays exceptionally well with others. Flexible by design, the piano has been a mainstay in classical music and jazz, and a key element in traditional and popular music. With the arrival of ambient, minimal and new age music in the 1970s, the piano was expanded and dematerialized through studio magic, and combined with ambient and electronic textures to create spatial sound images. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the acoustic piano meets ambient atmospheres, on a program called CONFLATION. Music is by JON HOPKINS, TALE OF US, BEN LUKAS BOYSEN, ROBERT RICH & MARKUS REUTER, HAROLD BUDD & CLIVE WRIGHT, CHRIS WALLA, and CHRISTOPHER WILLITS & RYUICHI SAKAMOTO. NOTE: If you're thinking of buying one the new electronic/digital pianos, here's an excellent guide by Rob Beck. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

Desire is a divine gift that stirs the soul, prompting us to pursue its fulfillment. Yet we often corrupt divine desire by conflation and control. We conflate love with lust, which drives us to see the other as a utilitarian object to fulfill lustful desire rather than a divine being with which to seek meaningful presence. We conflate joy with happiness, and pursue fleeting pleasures. We conflate peace with the absence of annoyance and play never ending whack-a-mole with the slightest intrusion. Conflation leads to control. Lust requires control, reducing sex to on-demand video, one-night stands, rape, pedophilia, and worse. Happiness demands that we control the trinkets kept within our reach so that we may summon them at will. Removing annoyances instead of seeking shalom forces us to use force to silence unwanted voices. To pursue desire by conflation, control, or the commingled concoction of both inevitably leads to anxiety, frustration, and the worship of money as the wellspring of control. We suffer anxiety over our limited control and abilities to obtain what we want. Frustration strikes when we fail, but ultimately even when we supposedly succeed as our conflated counterparts don't culminate in contentment. And the love of money is inescapable. Money is control, mathematically summoned at will. The path of conflation and control to fulfill desire will never bring satisfaction - it is a dead-end road that, despite our best efforts, cannot be turned into a luxurious culdesac of consummation. The divine path of desire is paved with trust in the Divine God of the Universe who created our desires and designed us to seek Him for their fulfillment. Trust removes the need for control and eliminates the habit of conflation, leaving us in a state of blissful shalom. This underlying theme pervades our last six episodes, though without in-depth contemplation we will engage today. Today, we see the beauty of Jesus' words through a review of of the thread that weaves through his last six otherwise isolated proverbs in his Sermon on the Mount. Today, we see the beauty of trust as the path to fulfilling our desires. I didn't get involved in the Lineker wars, mainly because I had other stuff on, but the affair triggered a little moment of realisation in me. That is: how conflation is used as a political weapon. It probably always was, but today, in all this political and philosophical division, conflation seems to be everywhere. The Great Conflationconflationnoun the act or process of merging two or more separate sets of information, texts, ideas etc into one wholeThe intention, with deliberate conflation, is often dishonest, usually to confuse. It's a technique frequently used by lawyers in courts. Often the conflation arises from actual confusion, however. In the Lineker wars, Team Gary conflated the issue of free speech with that of impartiality. Yes, there is crossover in the Venn diagram. There always is, otherwise the conflation does not work.Gary should be able to say what he likes. Free speech! Well, yes, but not if you are a BBC presenter, runs the other side of the argument. Presenters should be impartial. Many are, but so many are not it is no wonder people think the BBC is not impartial, but biased. The issue that Lineker was arguing about has also been conflated. Legal migrants, asylum seekers and refugees should be distinguished from illegal migrants and people trafficking, but the two have been conflated. Because of that conflation, it has become impossible to have a sensible conversation about immigration without emotions getting in the way and wild accusations of racism and all the rest of it being thrown about. (Racism itself is forever being conflated with other things to the point that now anything non-positive said about a person of colour can be construed as racist. Indeed now even positive things are being called out for being racist). My plan in this article was to call out other areas of conflation, because once you see conflation, it's very hard to un-see. The more people that see it, therefore, the better the chance of some kind of truth returning to public discourse. I was planning to highlight a few areas of conflation, followed by a short discussion of each. But it turns out there are so many, to discuss each one would be exhausting both for reader and writer. So, instead, I've put together this list.(Perhaps in future articles, I'll come back and discuss individual conflations in more detail).List of common conflations* Elections and democracy* Free speech and impartiality* Legal and illegal migration* The law and fascism* Justice and equality* Speech and violence* Journalism and activism* Opinions and facts* Statistics and truth* Europe and the EU* The state and society* Free markets and capitalism* Education and indoctrination* Free speech and hate speech* Morality and religion* Patriotism and nationalism* Brexit and take your pick* Equality of opportunity and equality of outcome* Cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation* Rights and privileges* Diversity and tokenism* Diversity and skin colour* Inflation and the price of the goods and services measured by CPI* Criticism and cancel culture* Science and pseudoscience* Debt and productivity* Clean energy and environmental sustainability* Climate change and environmentalism* Money and credit* Deposit and loan* Investment and spending* Skin colour and culture* Islam and terrorism* Fluctuations in the weather and man-made climate change* Price and value* Diversity quotas and equal opportunities* Morality and obedience* Aspergers and classic autism* Equity and equality of outcome* Diversity and conformism* Social justice and left-wing activism* Morality and leftist/progressive ideology* The NHS and quality healthcare for all* Income and wealth* Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade* Anarchy and chaos* Conservatism and right-wing ideology* Western representative democracy and true democracy* Two political parties and choice* Abortion and euthanasia* Wokism and caring about people* Beauty and truth (an ancient conflation)* The state and God* Conservatism and the Conservative Party* Classical Liberalism and the Liberal Party* Anything I don't like and fascismIn fact, there are so many in politics, I think I should stop there. (Lots of other good ones have been suggested in the comments). These are some of the many examples of things that have been conflated, leading to misunderstanding and misinterpretation galore. It's important to understand the nuances and differences between these concepts if you are to have informed and productive conversations about them.I'm normally a proponent of the never-explain-as-conspiracy-that-which-can-be-explained-by-incompetence school of thought, but I am coming round to the view that a lot of this conflation is deliberate. I once saw a presentation by Professor Tim Evans which outlined the methods employed by Marxists to seize power. The goal of the Marxist, he argued, is to create chaos, then, from that chaos, secure power. Conflation leads to intellectual chaos. There are, however, also the stupid, the not-so-well informed and the confused, and plenty of them, who know no better. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On the FLI Open Letter, published by Zvi on March 30, 2023 on LessWrong. The Future of Life Institute (FLI) recently put out an open letter, calling on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. There was a great flurry of responses, across the spectrum. Many were for it. Many others were against it. Some said they signed, some said they decided not to. Some gave reasons, some did not. Some expressed concerns it would do harm, some said it would do nothing. There were some concerns about fake signatures, leading to a pause while that was addressed, which might have been related to the letter being released slightly earlier than intended. Eliezer Yudkowsky put out quite the letter in Time magazine. In it, he says the FLI letter discussed in this post is a step in the right direction and he is glad people are signing it, but he will not sign because he does not think it goes far enough, that a 6 month pause is woefully insufficient, and he calls for. a lot more. I will address that letter more in a future post. I'm choosing to do this one first for speed premium. As much as the world is trying to stop us from saying it these days. one thing at a time. The call is getting serious play. Here is Fox News, saying ‘Democrats and Republicans coalesce around calls to regulate AI development: ‘Congress has to engage.' As per the position he staked out a few days prior and that I respond to here, Tyler Cowen is very opposed to a pause, and wasted no time amplifying every voice available in the opposing camp, handily ensuring I did not miss any. Structure of this post is: I Wrote a Letter to the Postman: Reproduces the letter in full. You Know Those are Different, Right?: Conflation of x-risk vs. safety. The Six Month Pause: What it can and can't do. Engage Safety Protocols: What would be real protocols? Burden of Proof: The letter's threshold for approval seems hard to meet. New Regulatory Authority: The call for one. Overall Take: I am net happy about the letter. Some People in Favor: A selection. Some People in Opposition: Including their reasoning, and complication of the top arguments, some of which seem good, some of which seem not so good. Conclusion: Summary and reminder about speed premium conditions. I Wrote a Letter to the Postman First off, let's read the letter. It's short, so what the hell, let's quote the whole thing. AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity, as shown by extensive research[1] and acknowledged by top AI labs.[2] As stated in the widely-endorsed Asilomar AI Principles, Advanced AI could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth, and should be planned for and managed with commensurate care and resources. Unfortunately, this level of planning and management is not happening, even though recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control. Contemporary AI systems are now becoming human-competitive at general tasks,[3] and we must ask ourselves: Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth? Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones? Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us? Should we risk loss of control of our civilization? Such decisions must not be delegated to unelected tech leaders. Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable. This confidence must be well justified and increase with the magnitude of a system's potential effects. OpenAI's recent stateme...

Fears from the Ukraine situation are being conflated with issues from the Pandemic that have already been resolved or mitigated.
