To Be Heard, To Be Seen, To MatterShaunda McDill is the newly appointed Managing Director of the Pittsburgh Public Theater. She is a rare type of new leader coming of age in the modern American Theater – black women who are ascending to top roles in major theatrical institutions across the country. She joins the ranks of theatrical trailblazers like Nataki Garrett, Artistic Director at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival; Dominique Morisseau, Executive Artistic Producer at Detroit Public Theater; Patricia McGregor, Artistic Director at New York Theater Workshop; and Hana Sharif, the Augustin Family Artistic Director at Repertory Theater of St. Louis. All wrestling with that question of how do we create space within the canon of the theater to make as much room as possible for a multitude of voices, perspectives, and stories to emerge that are as diverse and as expansive as is the landscape of the country today. Because in the final analysis, it comes down to Representation. And whose stories get to be heard, to be seen and to matter. For Shaunda, her answer to that question has its roots in her nontraditional journey to the Pittsburgh Public Theater. As a young girl her life as an artist began by performing in skits at the local Red Cross to highlight HIV/AIDS for kids, and reciting Bible verses in the Easter Pageants at her church. Along the way, she was mentored by such theater and literary luminaries as Ntozake Shange and August Wilson, and influenced by the words of Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, and Toni Morrison. She formed her own theater company called Demaskus – that unapologetically creates space for the underserved and underrepresented people in the theater to have the artistic license to succeed and fail, and to explore freely their artistry on their own terms. For as Shaunda says, “It is necessary for us to tell our own stories if they are going to be told. We must bear witness to what happens and what has transpired in our lives.” She has built a life buttressed by her strong, unshakeable faith and her belief that her approach to creativity isn't about struggling to convince others of her humanity, but rather a struggle to produce work and art that reflects her vision of the world. Her life and her career are not exercises in looking outward, rather they are the result of Shaunda looking inward into her innermost soul.At the Podium WebsiteAt the Podium on IGPatrick on IGFor more information contact Patrick at patrick@patrickhueyleadership.com

Clete Keith began his entertainment career at age 17 acting in Repertory Theater. While in the theatre, Clete sharpened his skills not only as an actor, but also began writing and directing. His career continued with numerous television roles. Clete's first film, which he wrote, starred in, and co-directed, was DEAD SILENCE, a.k.a. STARDUMB, a finalist in the Santa Barbara Film Festival. Clete wrote and starred in THE FOOL. This 35mm film was a finalist at both the Palm Springs Short Film Festival and the Hollywood Film Festival. Later that year, THE FOOL was rated one of the top 5 most watched short films on the Sci-Fi channel. Clete wrote, starred in, and directed the film INSTANT TRAUMA. TRAUMA won “Best Mockumentary” at the New York International Film and Video Festival and was highlighted at the Nashville Film Festival with a panel discussion about the film. INSTANT TRAUMA also landed Clete a seat on the writers' panel at the Sedona Film Festival which included Ron Bass, Bo Goldman, and writer/director, Daniel Petrie Jr., and the highlighted film of this sold-out symposium. Clete then wrote and directed the feature 3 DAYS BLIND which won the Best Comedy Feature in the Toronto World of Comedy International Film Festival. In late 2010, Clete finished the screenplay GINORMOUS, a script about two characters who are completely different in height, background and age but have a common bond in their hearts. Clete then turned his pen to theater. He wrote THE DIFFERENT SHADES OF HUGH. HUGH had a 9-week run in Los Angeles capping it off with an excellent review from the Los Angeles Times. He went on to write 4 more plays: ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM, ANTIQUE WHITE, LIFE SUPPORT, and his latest, ROYAL. Thanks for following!

Where are we today? Where do we want to be in the future? How do we get there? On today's episode we hear stories from Theresa Beauchamp and Delin Ruhl, two people who've taken action in moments of injustice. Our guests share their remarkable tales of standing up against oppression, whether that confrontation happens behind the lines of a phone bank or face to face in the streets. Theresa Beauchamp (she/her) is a retired family practice Physician Assistant and full-time political activist focused on reproductive and racial justice and the fight against voter suppression. Boogie boarding, e-biking with her husband, live theatre, hiking in the Sierras and playing with her grandchildren rejuvenate her along her journey as a lifelong activist. Delin Ruhl (they/them) is a musician and storyteller based out of Portland, OR. Locally, Dell plays alto saxophone for the Carroll Raum Swing Orchestra, and flute for the group Jump Up Pup. They have also played whistle and bodhran with the group Possibly Irish at Enchanted Forest, and enjoy performing original sets at venues like The Ranger Station and Floyd's Coffee. Theater credits include Is He Dead? and The Glass Menagerie (Hawai‘i Pacific University), for which they received a Hawai‘i State Theater Association Po‘okela Award for Leading Actor. Regional theater credits include A Christmas Carol (Goodman Theatre), Circle Mirror Transformation; Mauritius (Hawai‘i Repertory Theater), and Someone Else's Slippas (The Arts at Mark's Garage). Offstage, they can often be found debating with their parrot, snuggling their 20-pound Flemish Giant rabbit, or writing limericks.

Veteran's Repertory Theater President and Artistic Director Christopher Paul Meyer had acting in his blood. He comes from three generations of theater performers.  But the 9/11 attacks created a long detour from the performance arts. Chris found some success acting, including a small role in a television soap opera. He chose to focus his energies on stand-up comedy because that allowed him to be more entrepreneurial. His directorial debut was a one act “off-off Broadway” comedy. Opening weekend went well, the theater was closed on the following Monday and the 9/11 attacks happened on Tuesday.  Chris was scheduled for jury duty that morning at a courthouse near the World Trade Center towers. He described his experience as curiosity evolved into panic and the reality of the scene unfolded. While Chris didn't immediately enlist following the attacks, he joined the National Guard several years later when it became apparent this would be a long war and recruiting numbers were lagging. He spent 33 months in combat zones and earned a Bronze Star in Afghanistan. After 20 years of “wanderlust” he would return to found the Veteran's Repertory Theater to allow those who have experienced danger to tell their stories through theater, poetry and writing. Their programs also include family members who also have borne the burden. They have multiple programs available, many of them online. These include the Savage Wonder Podcast, Savage Wonder Literary Blog and Write Loud. While they are located in upstate New York, his goal is to make them a national brand. Chris also shares his experiences working with a group helping to get our allies out of Afghanistan. His team focused upon Afghan commando allies. “It was one of the hardest things I've ever done without being deployed.” Chris was managing 11 families and it was a 24 hour job.  All of them have been removed from danger. TAKEAWAY: The Afghan commandos that fought shoulder to shoulder with us would be great Americans in a heartbeat.

Lisa Vidal stars as Christina Martinez, the supportive wife of President Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood), in NBC’s new high-octane conspiracy thriller “The Event.” Vidal, an award-winning actress, is no newcomer to the challenging, multi-layered roles she’s been successfully portraying. She is most recognized for her regular roles on popular hit primetime series such as “Boston Legal,” “CSI Miami,” “The Division,” “ER,” “Third Watch” and “Southland.” A strikingly beautiful and seasoned actress of Puerto Rican descent, Vidal is a New York City native who began acting in Repertory Theater at age 14 and was cast the following year in the PBS series “Oye Willie,” thereby jump-starting a long and varied acting career, in which she has most often played grounded professionals balancing work and family. Vidal then went on to play the charming housekeeper for a good-natured elderly heiress, played by Loretta Young, in the holiday TV movie "Christmas Eve." The busy actress continued on such popular series as "The Cosby Show" and "Miami Vice." Determined to take roles that reflect and emphasize the diversity of the Latino community, Vidal acted in two "ABC After School Special" educational presentations: "Class Act: A Teacher's Story" and "In the Shadow of Love: A Teen AIDS Story." Vidal later recurred in the series "New York Undercover," as she played the sister of Michael DeLorenzo's New York City police detective, which widened her audience growth. Vidal was soon cast as cocky Jessica Helgado in the critically lauded police drama "High Incident," a Steven Spielberg production, and on the sitcom "The Brian Benben Show.”
