“The first increment of rest that we can practice is a pause.” – Octavia RaheemWho has time for rest? Too many of us would say, not me. Rest is devalued in society, but we NEED rest. I'm so excited to share this juicy conversation with Octavia Raheem, a rest/restorative coach and founder of Devoted to Rest™. If you feel like you can't stop, even if you're on the edge of burnout, you need this one.Octavia talks us through the tiniest bit of rest, a pause for three breaths, before we begin. Try it as you listen. See how it feels to pause, to breathe, to rest. Octavia came into rest because of a health crisis. She says she didn't know how to stop, so life stopped her in her tracks. It took being in a hospital bed for her to see the hamster wheel of doing she had been on.Rest is a daily practice, and it's easy to slip out of that practice. We get into how to build rest into your day, how to keep it a regular part of your life, and how a system that supports and values rest helps a lot.We talk about: Recognizing the tension between work and rest and feeling worthy of rest Productivity versus a spirit of creativity and generativeness Ways to slow down, like learning to be with your breath even when you are in motion and simplifying your morning (or other) routines Teaching our kids that it's okay to rest and go slow Recognizing where you are pulling more weight and disrupting old systems that keep you doing it Having the courage to experience your life, not just do itABOUT OCTAVIA Octavia Raheem is a wife, mother, author of two best selling books Pause, Rest, Be and Gather. She is a rest/restorative coach, yoga + meditation educator, and former wellness studio owner. She is the creator of Devoted to Rest™, a transformational rest focused experience for visionary women leaders making a high impact in their fields. Within her rest and work she threads time tested practices, depth skill and knowledge about what supports rest and what doesn't, wisdom rooted in Black American Southern traditions, and intuition into a blanket of experience under which individuals can gather and rebuke stress, fatigue, and burnout. Her offerings lead driven, inspiring, creative, and purpose centered individuals and companies to awaken the fullness of their potential and power through rest. Octavia has over 20 years of experience and well over 10,000 hours of designing and delivering classes, restshops, workshops, immersions, and trainings that transform, heal, and restore individuals and organizations. In 2021 Yoga Journal magazine recognized Octavia as one of fifteen experienced yoga professionals who have elevated and changed the field on a global scale. Closer to home and as a beacon in her local community, she was named one of four luminaries who have lit the way and created new avenues to yoga in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Southeast in September 2019 by Natural Awakening Magazine. Additionally her writing, rest, and work have been featured in Mantra, Tricycle, Well + Good, Atlanta Magazine, CNN, and at Essence Festival Wellhouse Atlanta. She has an academic background in English Literature, creative writing, and middle grades education as well as 10+ years of professional experience developing curricula for innovative learning and teaching Language Arts in K-12 settings. Most recently, she combined her passion for yoga, creativity, language, and community through her four year tenure as co-director for Yoga, Literature, and Art Camp for Teen Girls at Spelman College Museum of Fine Art founded by Dr. Chelsea Jackson Roberts. Octavia is committed to herself, family, community, and our world being well and rested- in body, mind, heart, and spirit.LINKS

With Camp season around the corner, this conversation explores a few integral components of the expectations of an official when attending camps and reffing games in general. Some of the keys we discussed are how to properly take feedback from observers and better communicate questions to them instead of sounding like a “Yeah but” ref. We touch on the importance of differentiating between black/white vs gray and how and when to apply the rules as written. conclude by discussing the importance of using rule-based explanations when addressing coaches because they cannot communicate about officiating on an expert level. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/crown-refs/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/crown-refs/support

Did you know that you can change the color of your hydrangeas? Neither did we! That's one of MANY fun & interesting things we learned today speaking with Maria Cermano; owner & operator of Blissful Blooms. From floral arrangements to neighborhood diversity, Maria's voice was a welcome addition to the show this morning. From growing up in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood to making Aurora her home, her journey is an inspiration. When we talk about chasing dreams and never giving up, what we're talking about is perseverance. It is that spirit of perseverance that can provide determination, even though our spirits may waver from time to time. Good Morning Aurora is here to listen. To share. To provide that space with which the individual can help another person through their shared experience. Blissful Blooms just had a successful ribbon cutting event so we're happy to have the opportunity to listen to all they have coming in the community. Oh, and check the water in your plants; if it's murky, that means there's bacteria in the water. So yeah, go ahead and change that water! Shout outs go to Gin Ingram Art & Vizo Arts for the fantastic artwork added to the Aurora Food Pantry. Peace of ART Camp is Thursday, Aug. 13th from 5 to 7 pm at the Peace House so be sure to attend that. Much love and respect to the IL House District 83 & 84 for all they do for our community. Illinois Department of Human Services Virtual Recruitment tomorrow at 1 pm (information will be posted) and shout out to the Aurora Public Library. Jalisco's on Lake Street, TBA Crew (them Bad Apples), Culture Stock & Aurora Public Art, Aurora Tap House & Blueberry BBQ, super shouts! Shouts go out to all the authors in Aurora: Devan The Artist (the Bear Book), Sarah Sommer, Tracy Duran & Xeli Xelz. You can check out the 'Local Authors' section on our website to see Devan's book and many more will be added as well. Shout out to Grant Milleren, McCarty Mills, PLS Solutions, Crystal House, Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club, Air Classics Museum in Sugar Grove & Alderman at Large Sherman Jenkins. Shout out to Alderwomen Smith & Hart-Burns, shout out to PreMil (Mac Appeal & Jay Money what up!), mad love and respect to all US Marines & United States Navy personnel. Welcome back to another episode of World Forge! This week we decide to explore a pretty interesting change in format by having our first episode without our proprietary prompt generation technology! Instead we are using booster packs of Magic the Gathering cards to guide our creations! Our aim was to show how inspiration can come from anywhere, and we utilize the art, the flavor text, and the mechanics of these cards to inform our Dungeons and Dragons creations! We also delve briefly into the world of ASMR so you know... if that's your thing you're welcome. Our goal was to use these prompts to tell THE GREATEST STORY OF ALL TIME and obviously we succeeded because hey it's us. Our rec room recommendations this week include a really interesting art sharing site built around collaborative story telling in storywars.net, as well as Art Camp by Noah and Rachel Bradley! We also suggest you take a look at our two sources of story inspiration this week: Homer's The Odyssey, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's The Autumn of the Patriarch. Mechanically we think these two works explore journeys and adventuring in especially interesting ways. As always, if you enjoyed this episode or want to share any feedback please consider reaching to us on on social media! What do you think is the greatest story ever told? Do you have any ideas about how to improve or expand upon our creations? If so we can be found on twitter @worldforgepod and via email at worldforgepod@gmail.com! We're always excited to hear from our listeners, and if you send us something really interesting we may just share it on air! If you're feeling particularly generous, please consider leaving us a review on Apple Podcasts, or your podcasting app of choice! Leaving us a review or sharing our show with a friend are the best ways to support this podcast completely for FREE, and really helps to get our show in front of new listeners! We of course want to thank you all for tuning in, and we also want to thank James Duke for our amazing theme music, he can be found at jamesduke.info! Talk to you again next week listeners!

Every morning at Art Camp, the bell rings at 10:30 and nearly 30 kids from Rockford and Peoria gather in a circle and "sing hello." That means every child is musically greeted by their name so they know they are welcomed, recognized, and loved. After the song, the campers break off into groups organized by age. They learn different disciplines of art including dance, drama, visual arts, gardening and cooking. This is Ann Rundall's Art Camp.
Jamie Truwe, artist of Pure Joy Creative in Cole Camp, Missouri, joins Andy and Sarah to talk about why art is valuable to kids of all ages, what kids learn through art in addition to art skills, and what kids will learn in art camp. Art Camp is a unique camp that offers campers from ages 8-15 to come together for one week and hone their artistic skills. Often one of the last camps of the summer, Art Camp gives campers a safe place to find their creative voice while providing a chance to participate in classic camp activities. This week we take a look at folks offering artistic guidance to our campers and learn just how Art Camp tackles having a camp so huge.
Noah Bradley is an American artist, known best for his work on Magic: The Gathering cards, as well as his The Sin of Man project. He is also well-known as the guy who told everyone "don't go to art school. As a supplement to that advice, he founded Art Camp to help art students all over the world learn to make better art. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/noahbradley In this episode, Noah discusses: -The list that he made of things he wanted to do with his life, and why he chose “artist.” -His experience at RISD and VCU. -How he decided to become a landscape and environment artist. -The confusion, disappointment, and excitement that he felt when people started responding to his landscape work. -Being plagued with the desire to move onto another piece as opposed to finishing the one he is working on. -His experience working for Wizards of the Coast and doing art for Magic: The Gathering. -Why he gave away free prints at Illuxcon and what that did for his art career. -The difficulty he has in scheduling his life and knowing where he is going to be the next day. -Why he believes that people should not pay for art school. -His advice for people who have difficulty keeping self-imposed deadlines and holding themselves accountable. -The importance of making your creative passion a habit (especially in the morning) so that you can take the decision-making process out of it. -Finding an external source to hold you accountable. -Quitting social media and what has happened since. -His personal project, “The Sin of Man.” Noah's Final Push will make you realize that as long as you put the time and hard work in, you can reach your creative goals too! Quotes: “For my own happiness, I can’t just sit around and not make something. If at the end of the day I don’t have something tangible in my hands or on a screen that I made, I don’t feel happy about how productive I was that day.” “Just go for it. Whatever happens to click for you is the thing that you should be pursuing. And it’s often not the thing that you originally set out to do.” “Find ways to make it a habit rather than a decision.” Links mentioned: How I Became an Artist by Noah Bradley Don't Go To Art School by Noah Bradley Art Camp The Sin of Man Connect with Noah: Website / Art Camp On the next episode: Shawny Sheldon : Instagram Join the discussion in the Facebook group!

Following a long summer hiatus Marry Me is back with their first ever live episode! Over the past year, Kevin, Cullen and Susan have discussed camp on numerous occasions making this a fitting return live from Shrine Mont Art Camp. During the day Kevin and Cullen fielded questions from campers and then put on a live show for that night's evening program. In the absence of Susan Daughtry, the two were joined by Episcopalian Bishop Susan Goff. Questions answered include: Why did they choose marriage? How do you actually get married? Why can you object at a wedding? Can you fart at a wedding? Can you say no to a proposal? and How do you kiss someone? Camper names have been changed to protect the innocent (Thanks to James Robin Adams for providing the phony names) Check out Save The Arcadian (the band behind our wonderful theme music) Support The Annual, get a Subscription!
