2. No puedo serlo. Pero, ¿no pensáis como yo que estas marcas y su historia son un verdadero patrimonio que no habría que dejar caer en el olvido? Creo que los europeos no lo estamos haciendo bien y que las consecuencias las van a sufrir nuestros hijos y nietos… Si lo vemos con perspectiva el desplome de la industria del motor europea ha comenzado hace ya mucho y lejos de pararse, parece que se acelera. No me gusta ser ni pesimista ni polémico, pero, ¿no pensáis lo mismo?

But first, James takes us down memory lane with stories of his first few cars including a two-tone blue 1977 Caprice Classic gifted from his grandfather, a vehicle full of character and quirks. You'll hear about its uncanny resemblance to an undercover police car which benefitted James more than once, the persistent stalling issues, and the adventure of installing a Pioneer stereo system. Passing the 1977 Caprice to his brother enabled James to purchase his next car, a "new to him" gold with vinyl top 1985 Oldsmobile Toronado Caliente, considered quite the luxury car in its day. His next car was near and dear to his heart, a "John Deere green" 1976 Triumph Spitfire, enabling him to be part of a car club and relying more on his mechanical skills - likely an early catalyst for his current line of work.Today, James splits his daily driving between a white 1999 Porsche 911 cabriolet and a 2017 white Honda CRV to ferry him to/from his auto restoration shop where he shares his passion as he delves deep into some of the intricacies of classic car restoration. San Diego Magazine's Happy Half Hour
Is This the Best Falafel in San Diego?

San Diego Magazine's Happy Half Hour

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2024 66:30

Stop us if you've heard the Happy Half Hour cast claim a particular food item was the “best in San Diego” before (to be fair, San Diego Magazine devotes an entire issue to the topic). If we assign superlatives, we tend to stand behind them, so buckle up for the following: We've found the best falafel in San Diego. Hands down, bar none, et cetera. Falafel Heights takes up a small storefront on 30th, near Lincoln, in North Park. This block, formerly decrepit due to many closures (Toronado, Streetcar Merchants, and others), is about to veritably pop off. Falafel Heights opened last fall, high-end dive Happy Medium (by Fernside, SDCM, and former CH barkeeps Christian Siglin and Eric Johnson) opened last week, CH's new Persian spot is currently under construction, and Saigon Coffee is just across the street, as is Second Chance Brewing, and other businesses. Owner and founder Lialie Ibrahim, a staple in San Diego's running community, opened Falafel Heights after years of pop-ups and people goading her into sharing her exceptionally poppable treats. See, falafel comes in many forms. There's Egyptian falafel, which is large–almost bready. Baked Lebanese falafel fits in the palm of your hand. Ibrahim's falafel—quarter-sized balls deep-fried and served street-style as she experienced in Palestine's West Bank, where she has lived—is meant to be popped as finger food. Dipped in sauces, loaded on fries, or served in a wrap or bowl. It's addictive, and when served with one of her many sauces, including a hard-to-find Iraqi mango amma, I promise it will stick in your memory. Ibrahim is originally from the Bay Area, where her Palestinian parents settled after immigrating to the United States. She tried her hand at journalism, doing mostly radio work before moving to San Diego. While here, she got into local running clubs, started making falafel for friends with her family's recipes, and even helped her good friends (part of her running club) start a little old kombucha brand, which would eventually become Boochcraft. “Upon moving to San Diego, I wanted to taste falafel the way I fell in love with it as street food in the West Bank,” Ibrahim says of her desire to jump into the professional frying pan. “I grew up eating falafel made from scratch, which involves soaking the beans overnight, blended with fresh ingredients, and cooked upon request.” She believes that's the only way to serve it, so that's how it is at Falafel Heights. Fresh, hot, delicious, and plentiful. She's even got a mascot, Phil, a walking, talking falafel wrap. In addition to stuffing our faces with chickpeas, we also talked about the news, all of which concerns North Park, and some of which I previewed earlier in this post. Happy Medium finally opened on 30th and Lincoln; Bivouac Adventure Lodge opened last week in a huge yurt-like space next to the original bar room; Trust's Brad Wise will open a French brasserie next year on 30th and University; On March 13, Black Radish will host a five-course menu with wine pairings from Napa's El Molino and Memento Mori; and Jersey Mikes and Belching Beaver have both opened in North Park.

So much history in this place. It's where brewers came up with one of the beers that put San Diego on the national map. It's where a person signed a deal for a billion dollars and sold to a multinational corporation. And it's where an indie brewer bought it back, and took it into the new age. The place is the palace of beer that is Ballast Point in Miramar. The beer is Sculpin IPA. For this podcast, we sat down with five evolutions of Sculpin in front of us—from grapefruit Sculpin to a Aloha Sculpin—with one of our favorite people in the city, Jeff Lozano. Technically the “ambassador” of Ballast Point, Jeff is the voice you hear in the Ballast Point commercials when you're watching the Padres games. His voice is made for this, like if a cigarette and a late-night radio DJ had a lovechild. Ballast Point just made a serious investment on the food side of the house at all their locations, too, hiring culinary director Tommy Dimella. I'll say this. Go to Miramar. Work your way through the evolution of Sculpin like we did. Order two things from his menu: the Double-Stack Angus Smash Burger (white American cheese, BP special sauce, pepperoncini, lettuce, tomato—basically a real chef's take on a Bic Mac), and… arguably the star… the whipped goat cheese (made creamier with labneh, then topped with olive oil and cumin-spiced honey, strawberries, and seeded lavash cracker). It's the Summer of Sculpin (locals know that the real San Diego summer starts in August and goes through October). It was pretty much nonstop one-liners and laughs, but Jeff also runs us through the about beer and the food scene in San Diego and gives us some hard and useful science about why certain beers taste better with certain foods. In news, we talk about the opening of Madi, the all-day brunch joint from the Madison on Park people; the upcoming Botanica, an NFT art bar (you can buy NFTs of art on display) based around gin from the restaurant group that brought Tahona and Wormwood; Fairplay, a new concept from the Fernside crew coming to the spot vacated by beloved Toronado; and North Park's first ever (we think, correct us if we're wrong) rooftop bar, Dollie's at Hoxton. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” David re-fell in love with Craft & Commerce; Jeff raves about old-school San Diego classic, Bully's East Steakhouse; and Troy was in a soup dumpling mood and pointing to the favorite he found in his citywide search for xiao long baos, Facing East. Go to Ballast. Spend an afternoon in an icon. Also search out Jeff Lozano. Make him talk to you. He's funny as hell. Thanks for listening, y'all.

For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” David re-fell in love with Craft & Commerce; Jeff raves about old-school San Diego classic, Bully's East Steakhouse; and I'm in a soup dumpling mood and pointing to the favorite I found in my citywide search for xiao long baos, Facing East. Go to Ballast. Spend an afternoon in an icon. Also search out Jeff Lozano. Make him talk to you. He's funny as hell. Thanks for listening, y'all.

Today’s guest is Bill Vivian, the owner of Regents Pizzeria in La Jolla, a pizzeria that specializes in both Chicago and New York-style pizzas. They’re also famous for their chicken wings, which range in spice levels from mild to explosively hot. We highlighted the “Scorpion Wings” from Regents in The Adventurous Eaters' Checklist feature in San Diego Magazine’s Food Lover’s Guide. If you want to order the Scorpion Wings, you have to sign an actual waiver—they’re so hot they pack 2 million Scoville units (for reference, a habanero has anywhere from 100,000 to 350,000 Scoville units). Regents Pizzeria was opened in 2005 by Stephen Carson, and when he passed away in 2011, Bill took over the operation. And since the opening of the restaurant, Regents has never owned a freezer and never will, according to Bill. Regents’ current location in La Jolla has been open since late 2014. For Two People, $50, Bill chose Tribute Pizza, whose owner, Matt Lyons, helped Bill perfect a gluten-free pizza crust. David chose Cori Pastificio Trattoria, chef Accursio Lota’s new restaurant in North Park. Troy chose Mister A’s for their fabulous views (and shared some tips on what to get for happy hour there). Erin chose Ciccia Osteria, the Italian restaurant in Barrio Logan owned by Mario Cassineri and his wife, Francesca. In Hot Plates, Rusticucina is a new Sicilian restaurant that just opened on Park Boulevard, and the co-founders are all from Sicily. Toronado, a long-standing craft beer bar in North Park, is going to close soon. Another big closure happening this week is Indigo Grill, which has been in Little Italy for more than 20 years. The pop-up dinner at Liberty Station where you get to dine inside a terrarium starts tomorrow, Feb. 6, and the chef for the event is Claudette Zepeda Wilkins. Keep an eye on The Feed next week, because Troy will be announcing the winner of the city's Best Birria! David’s 60 Second Beer Review this week is Karl Strauss' 31st anniversary barrel aged scotch ale, a traditional Scotch ale aged for 12 months in American whiskey barrels. This week’s Hot Topic comes from an opinion piece that Troy just posted on our website: “Superfood is a Supersham,” where he says “Superfood is a meaningless marketing word” that is commonly used to describe certain fruits, vegetables and ingredients—and there is little to no good science to back up the health claims. Also, some of the research that does was paid for by the producers of these foods. Thanks for listening, and we’d love to hear from you! Call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a message. Or if you’re too shy to call, you can email HappyHalfHour@sdmag.com. Chris Egan is our special guest driver from the Futility Motorsports endurance racing team.  We last saw Chris at the 24 Hours of Lemons race at Thompson.  We review his lemons racing history as well as the team’s recent over-temp issues at their last race.  Chris started racing with a Shelby Daytona and somehow he is still going (with the Futility Motorsport Saab).  Chris has also raced in several HPDE’s and tried his hand at autocross.  Chris races with his family (father, brother, and sister) and is shooting for a top 20 overall.  Chris covers why the Daytona is no longer the team vehicle and how the 250k mile Saab came to be a race car.   We also talk about the pressures and responsibilities of being a square on the E1R bingo card and the history of the “Young Chris Egan” moniker.    Chris is a mechanical engineer who has a penchant for following in the steps of Rube Goldberg, so he fits right into the lemons paddock.  A natural born tinkerer in all areas, we also go over the recent intercom system that Chris has been working on and developing.  As expected, Bill had no shame and requested a test model for our upcoming HPDE at Watkins Glenn.    The conversation led to many different areas of discussion, including:    HPDE vs racing vs autocross comparisons in learning and experience on track driving and improving your ability to read and predict other drivers, both on and off the track.    Chris recalls several of the wild and crazy things he has seen both on and off the track at a lemons race, including a burning man themed paddock   Vicki and Chris talk about making their own tracks at NHMS by not going up the hill.  Chris seems to have worse luck at NHMS than we do.   Lots of trial by fire and learning what “to do” and what “not to do”.    Building an old Toronado in Jahn Pagels shop with Spank the night before the Sonoma race.    We make a challenge for a twin-engine car driven by two stick shifts.  (one single clutch would be acceptable)   We also go through a quick math problem with Alan over the plusses (time) and minuses (laps) of his recent red mist collection of black flags.    We also go round and round on what we are doing with the El Jeffe race truck brake heating issues and the Capri engine/transmission swap with input from Chris   Chris get subjected to a Good, Bad, and the Ugly review of his racing career/history.   We make a bet between Chris and Alan on who finishes their project car first (getting the engine to fire).  Who do you think will win?  Chris and his E36 or Alan with the 3.8 liter Capri swap.    Biggest takeaway:  Finish the work on the car as soon as possible, not just in time for the race.    How many other racing podcasts would also have a Wacky Racers reference in the flow of the conversation?

you've heard it before that "all beer tastes the same" when referring to "factory beer". the best think of these beers as the lowest common denominator with regards to taste, smell and expectations. they were designed with a precarious balancing act in mind which makes a beer that tastes like something, has a buzz inducing quality and is cost effective to make while maximizing profits. add in a little advertising to tell people what they want (and expect) and wha-laa fizzy yellow beer that is consumed by zillions of people. what we found echos our previous findings: you can taste the difference between all four of these beers. they aren't very good when you compare this beers to craft beer. in the right context any of these beers could be refreshing. if you do your homework you may come to a similar conclusion. homework: get four factory beers and try them side-by-side-by-side-by-side. you don't have to drink the whole beer. be sure to talk about the things that you are tasting: sweet, bitter, crispness, mouth feel and the carbonation. bonus homework is to compare the same beer in bottles and cans because there is a difference sometimes. the cans are better. beer on the show: Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors and Coors Light Dogfish Head Festina Peche call the Beer School Robot! 424-242-3375 Beer School everywhere: http://www.facebook.com/beerschool http://youtube.com/beerschool Follow JohnFoster and BeerSchool on Twitter.com Be sure to visit City Beer Store, Toronado and 21st Amendment in San Francisco, CA Email us at info@beerschool.com Good noon! Five We’ve talked about your Next Four Beers and Another Four beers. This time we’re asking you to try 5. These beers are off the beaten path and away from “normal” tasting beer. You don’t have to drink these specific beers because you might have trouble finding all of them. All we’re asking is that you go to your edge to try things you wouldn’t normally drink. Beers on the show: Arrogant Bastard from Stone, Triple Bock from Sam Adams, Oude Geuze, Negra Modelo, and random home brew that might have been made with a Mr. Beer kit. Homework: Try a home brew and go to the edge. Not Belgium Belgium beers are sought out because of they've been brewed the same way for centuries. But you don't need to go all the way there to experience these styles of beer. Instead, look to your local brewery for great examples. Many of the breweries in the US (or anywhere else for that matter) see this style as the pinnacle of brewing. So there are lots of beers to try.   Beers on the show: Lost Abbey Judgement Day, Brewery Ommegang Three Philosophers, Allagash Curieux, Russian River Damnation, North Coast Brother Thelonious, Dog Fish Head Midas Touch, Avery Fifteen. Homework: Try a local "Belgium Style" beer. Get some random local beers with names like tripple, double, lambic, etc. Then invite your friends over for a tasting. Dad's Beer The brands that my father and his friends used to drink were Hamm's, Schlitz, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Olympia and Old Milwaukee. There were great marketing campaigns that went with these beers making them memorable even today. However these beers are little more then a brand names made in somewhere in America (like Irwindale, CA). We couldn't verify that the original recipes were being used.
