Click To JOIN! Just Keep Learning Newsletter I WILL HELP YOU GET CLARITY, BUILD YOUR GROWTH MINDSET AND OWN YOUR BIG DREAMSAs I walked through the hospital today, I passed by a monitor displaying a message that caught my eye. "Remember, mistakes are evidence that you're trying."It made me smile, but it also made me think. How do we spread this message? How do we make sure everyone understands this? I already believe in it, but what about the people who don't get it? The ones stuck in their comfort zones, afraid to step into the unknown?Stop Chirping Post MaloneI recently heard people criticizing Post Malone for venturing into country music. It's hilarious to me because while he's out there dropping an album that's going to be a huge success, people are questioning his decision. Why do they care? I'm sure Post Malone isn't phased. He'll probably jump into something completely different next—maybe a Nirvana tribute, spoken word poetry, or another experimental project. What's fascinating about him is his ability to ignore the noise and keep creating. I'd love to interview him to dive deeper into this mindset. I imagine that if someone asked him why he decided to try country music, he'd probably shrug and say, “Why not?"Why Not?That's the question, isn't it? Why not? Why not try something new, even if people don't understand? We often feel the need to create within strict boundaries. But most of us don't want to fit neatly into a category, we want to explore the gray areas. In a world full of rules, expectations, and fear of failure, stepping outside the box like this is a courageous act. Someone asked me yesterday how I define creativity? It's a simple question, but answering it takes courage. Creativity is such a broad topic that it's hard to pin down. But I think the most important thing is this: it's not about what you make; it's about your willingness to make something at all. It's about pushing past the limitations that have been imposed on us—by society, school, by your family, friends, and your own inner critic. Pushing all that aside and doing the work anyway. The Cage We BuildHere's where things get real. Most people, at some point, get stuck. Between kindergarten and adulthood, we've been told too many rules, received too much negative feedback, and started believing that we're not creative. I've been there. For years, I believed I wasn't creative because I didn't fit the mold. But there's a turning point—a moment where you decide to uncage your creativity and reclaim it for yourself.Stephen Pressfield talks about resistance in his book The War of Art, the invisible force holding you back from doing the work. It's fear. It's doubt. It's the voice that tells you your ideas aren't good enough. But here's the thing: creativity is like a statue covered in mud. It's still there, buried under layers of grime. All you need to do is chisel away at it, bit by bit, clean it up and let it shine.Sometimes we need prompts or constraints to get started, and that's okay. But don't let those tools become a crutch. True creativity comes when we stop relying on someone else's template and start carving our own path. The Trap of "Realism"A friend recently asked me if it was realistic to pursue both gaming and engineering. This word—realistic—always catches my attention. Who gets to decide what's realistic? Will Smith once said that it probably seemed unrealistic for the Wright brothers to imagine flying a metal contraption into the sky. Edison? Unrealistic to think a small piece of plastic could light up a room. If you told someone 15 years ago that we'd be watching movies on tiny pieces of glass and plastic in our pockets, they would have laughed. But here we are…The point is, we can't be afraid of being unrealistic. The world's greatest innovations were once dismissed as impossible. If we constantly seek validation for our ideas—asking others if they think it's realistic—we're building an imaginary boundary for ourselves. Creativity doesn't need boundaries.Creativity Requires CourageThis brings me back to Post Malone. He didn't ask for permission to explore country music, and he certainly didn't need validation from critics. He just did it.And you can do the same with your ideas. Yes, there will be resistance. Society will always try to keep you within its boundaries, telling you to be realistic. But even a small step outside that box—one bold idea, one act of courage, putting a little of your own skin in the game—can change your life. And who knows? It might change someone else's too.Uncaging Your CreativityI actually spoke with the producers of a documentary I love called ‘Abstract' about my own idea of producing a film called “uncaging creativity” where we follow people who lost their creative touch, but went on a journey to not just regain it, but thrive in a creative pursuit. The whole concept is kind of based on my life. I stopped creating because I thought that was the “mature” thing to do.But now I realize that I'm supposed to use the right side of my brain as much as possible. It's who I am (for life). Now if I did it, you can too!If you feel like your creativity is blocked, don't worry. You can uncage it. I'll share some bullet points, basically a checklist for regaining your creativity. But overall, start by recognizing that great ideas often seem crazy at first. You do not need validation. In fact, most people won't get it, and that's okay. You don't need a perfect plan. If it was simple to understand, or easy to do then other people would be doing it. This is why it takes bravery, curiosity, and a willingness to explore your ideas, make mistakes and keep going further into the unknown.A Checklist For Uncaging CreativityAction over words: Don't just talk about your ideas—act on them.Embrace discomfort: Push through the fear of failure and take on difficult tasks.Build routines: Establish habits that make creativity a natural part of your life.Detach from outcomes: Focus on the process, not the result.Perseverance: Keep pushing forward, or pivot even when things get tough.Commit to self-improvement: It's you vs you. Aim to get better, no matter where you start. There ya have it! Now I'd love to be able to support your work. The world needs your unique voice, and it's time to uncage your creativity. So here's my question for you: What will you create? What will you share?Be sure to actually reach out and let me know.FOLLOW JustinInstagram – @JustKeepLearning.CaYouTube –@justkeeplearningpodcastTwitter – @JustinNolan_JKLTiktok – @justkeeplearning.caPinterest – JustKeepLearningcaFacebook – JustKeepLearningLinkedIn – Justin I'm so happy you found this podcast. Hearing them again registered differently this time since a few things in my life have changed. I've been hard charging on a few separate fronts, moving several projects forward toward their finish lines, and a few lines got me thinking about this desire to get approval. The "need" for approval can strike before you start a project, in the middle, or before the finish line. My friend calls it "looking for a cosigner". L'élément qui garantira le succès de ton événement ou projet - Épisode 80

Que des solutions

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 1, 2023 23:19

Resistance. The word resistance brings fear and trembling into most writers' hearts, mainly thanks to Stephen Pressfield who told us that we have to fight resistance like warriors if we want to stay on track as writers and authors. But my approach, as you know, is different. In today's episode I'm going to give you three ways, including the magic mantra of Tina Turner, so you can turn resistance into opportunity. What is resistance? "Where there is a dream, there is resistance," says Stephen Pressfield. [00:01:20] Resistance is the act of opposing or judging something. It can manifest as fear, doubt, or discomfort.[00:01:28]  "Resistance cannot be seen, touched, heard, or smelled, but it can be felt. It's a repelling force. Its aim is to shove us away, distract us, prevent us from doing our work."  Stephen Pressfield, The War of Art. Resistance especially seeks out those in the creative realm, entrepreneurs, artists, writers, and anyone on a spiritual journey or a [00:02:00] health path. So how to break free? There are two ways that I know and will share with you in this episode:1.  Either disaster strikes or 2.  You explore "the inner path". I tell two stories that demonstrate "disaster strikes" as a pathway to opportunity. Then I offer 3 ways I recommend to break free from Resistance by following the "inner path" instead:Letting Go with David HawkinsTina Turner's Magic Mantra for chanting (that's me chanting it in the background while describing it)Internal Family Systems (IFS): No Bad Parts because our higher Self will orchestrate our wholeness.IFS is a featured chapter from my upcoming new book for writers and authors: "Bust Writer's Block Forever, Seven Game-Changing ways for Writers, Authors, to Kiss Writer's Block Good-Bye and Unleash Creative Inspiration." My latest non-fiction book is Indie Author Marketing Infrastructure, a distillation of some of what I teach when I coach new writers considering self-publishing. Hazy Days and Cloudy Nights: "How It All Got Started" is my fiction serial set in the 1980s and delivered weekly, for free, to subscribers. Get in on it and start at the beginning! I mention Lester Dent and his method for writing pulp fiction. The fantasy genre is a crowded field these days, what with popular sub-sub-sub-genres like LitRPG, Reverse Harem, and Cultivation mucking things up... In case you're not familiar with the myth of Sisyphus... The "How's That Big Plan Going" Sonitotum episode. In case you're not familiar with the sword of Damocles... and yeah, I don't quite utilize the metaphor appropriately in this episode. Stephen Pressfield wrote The War of Art, in which he includes his ritual of invoking the Muse (as in the first verse of The Illiad or The Odyssey), not Pallas Athena as I wrongly say in the episode. My patron community receives the uncut, unedited version of every episode. For this episode, they're privy to about thirteen minutes of extra content! Want in on that? In today's episode of Sync Music Matters I'm talking to TV & Film composer and solo artist Danny Mulhern. Danny is a very philosophical guy and we go pretty deep in today's interview, exploring improvisation and flow state as a tool for creating music. Flow state can be defined as: “mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus.” We talk about overcoming procrastination or what Stephen Pressfield in the War of Art, refers to as “resistance”  And Danny generously shares about a difficult period in his life when he fell out of love with music. His love was ultimately rekindled through collaboration and ultimately the “human connection” which had been missing for some time. We go Under The Skin with the movie What They Had and talk about a upcoming project about the Meaning Crisis cognitive psychologist John Verveake Danny Mulhern TV & Film Composer and Solo Artist Biog Danny Mulhern is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer who in addition to writing for TV and film, releases his own unique brand of instrumental music.  Much of his recent work has been with the London Contemporary Orchestra on records and film scores, including the critically acclaimed What They Had, starring Hilary Swank, Michael Shannon and Robert Forster. Other Film and TV scores include long-running BBC forensic crime drama Silent Witness, BBC wildlife documentary The Natural World and entertainment shows with Derren Brown, Matt Lucas and Simon Pegg. His own music is best described as contemporary classical with an ambient/electronic crossover. To my mind Danny's music is wonderfully textural and he often plays with polyrhythms as he explores philosophical ideas around improvisation, intuition and collective intelligence Look out for his forthcoming album Singing Through Others. Which is Inspired primarily by conversations around sense-making and the meaning crisis. No, yo tampoco. La Resistencia le venció. A lo mejor te parece una exageración, pero lo diré de todas maneras: para Hitler fue más fácil empezar la Segunda Guerra Mundial que enfrentarse a un lienzo en blanco”Con éstas y otras frases parecidas e igualmente indescriptibles empieza uno de los libros más peculiares que he leído nunca. Se llama The War of Art, "La guerra del arte".

As you listen to this and future Growing Creative episodes, you'll sense that the metaphor of growing plants is so accurate for creative growth because so much of the growth happens under the soil, down in the dirt. It can be messy. How do creativity and spirituality intersect? According to Callahan Woodbery - a creative coach, and aesthetic alchemist - it begins by inhaling inspiration and then exhaling your creative gifts for the world to interact with. Callahan's art takes many shapes: she is an essayist, photographer, and printmaker who draws her inspiration primarily from her travels and excursions into the natural world.  One of the things that comes through so vibrantly in her work is her belief that our relationship to the Earth directly influences our relationship with our community, our creativity, and our sense of self. She's a nature mama, and in her work she channels the voice of mother nature beautifully.  In this episode we discuss how being in the outdoors is the ultimate creative muse, what growing up in a family of artists is like, discovering that you can in fact be paid for your passions, the myth of the starving artist, the five guidelines for creative living, and even whether or stealing ideas as a way to spark inspiration (so taboo!). Callahan reminds us that connecting to our creative process is a deeply spiritual endeavor. You can find out more about Callahan and her work at thisiscallahan.com. If I'm being honest, this is a constant battle for me. Stephen Pressfield in his book The War of Art called it "Resistance". I call it "The Liar". The moment you start moving forward. The moment you start taking that chance. The moment you put yourself out there, the Liar is going to try and stop you. The Liar is going to try and convince you that you don't have what it takes. I know from experience! As I move towards seeing my new book release where I'm going after the 25 Lies holding us back, I'm still battling the Liar's voice that's trying to keep me stuck in fear and insecurity. What is the Liar and how do we stop it? That's what I'm discussing in today's new podcast episode. Plus, the power and practice of listening to the Truth-Teller instead.   As I write in 25 Lies Twentysomethings Need to Stop Believing: "The Liar doesn't want you to do important work. That's when its voice gets the strongest. Why? Because the Liar doesn't want you to risk. The Liar is that “friend” who's always telling you “That won't work,” trying to project their own fear on you like you're a drive-in movie theater screen.Well, if we're going to tackle lies, if we're going to set ourselves up to succeed, build, and create, we first have to tackle the Liar. Because the Liar's one goal is to make you believe that you don't have what it takes."How many amazing dreams were "never was" because the Liar took that person out before they could really even start. If we're going to stop believing the lies, we have to stop listening to the Liar. Let's listen to the life and hope the Truth-Teller is trying to tell us instead. Read more about how to build the habit and practice of listening to the Truth-Teller rather than the Liar in my new book 25 Lies Twentysomethings Need to Stop Believing

Tim's doing a new experiment. (I'm not surprised.) He's looking at people and asking himself one question... "What happened to this person?" He said, "Normal people are just folks you don't know well enough yet, right? Nobody's normal. We're so full of stuff and trauma and nonsense and silly beliefs. Everyone's a work in progress and since you're a work in progress, it's very hard to know yourself." He gave me an example. But didn't name names. "There was this woman who had some very peculiar emotions. It turned out that she had watched her father beat her mother into unconsciousness on multiple occasions... knocked out, unconscious, on the floor. And that was just the tip of the iceberg." She's acting in response to her past. Not her present. I think that's what Tim means when he said, "we're cause and effect collection machines." And that's really where advice comes from... the intersection between cause, effect, and hindsight. I feel Tim's really mastered this new intersection. He's embracing being "a work in progress." That's what makes his new book so relatable. It's called "Tribe of Mentors: Short Life Advice from the Best in the World." He reached out to Matt Ridley, Stephen Pressfield, Dustin Moskovitz, Naval Ravikant, Patton Oswalt, Susan Cain, Ben Stiller, Annie Duke... the list goes on and on. (But don't worry! I'm in the next book, "Tribe of ALMOST Mentors"). Each person in the book dissects their success. They slice it open, dig through the guts and give you the heart. They show you HOW they became a peak performer. And the best part is it's all through Tim's lens.
