This week we sit down with comedian, lawyer, and keyboard warrior Jess Salomon. We talk about life working at the Hague, Jewish summer camps, trips to Gaza, being married to a Palestinian woman, the Artist's Way, human rights, and being a Jewish person who isn't into Zionism. Jess Salomon is a New York based Canadian comedian, who has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. She's been a Stand Up NBC finalist, done lots of cool festivals including Just for Laughs. Her debut album, “All the Best Choices” came out in 2019 with label, 800 Pound Gorilla which will soon release her debut comedy special and second album, "Sad Witch". You can also watch her comedy special, “Marriage of Convenience” on the Just for Laugh's YouTube channel, recorded with her wife as part of their duo act @theelsalomons. Fun fact: before comedy Jess used to be a U.N. war crimes lawyer. The jury is still out on whether this was a good move. Sometimes, the best things happen when you take an unexpected step back from the daily hustle of running a business. Rachel Greiman discovered this when COVID-19 shut down daycares, and she was forced to delegate more of her copywriting projects to other writers. Though this led to a pay cut (at first) as she took on less client work herself, it ultimately led her to triple her business revenue the next year. Listen to this podcast episode to hear how making tough decisions might just be the BEST decision in the long run. When I first started at my full-time job 13 years ago, benefits enrollment and open enrollemt were foreign languages to me. With no one to talk to, I read part of the jargon, made my elections, and kept it moving for SIX years. It would take me that much time to realize that I'd been selecting the wrong health insurance plan . It's that time of the year when employees of companies in the USA are making their benefits elections. In this episode, I explain key open enrollment reminders. I talk about1. Some key terms that relate to health insurance2. Understanding the plan options available to you and then assess what plans(s) are best for you3. Comparing your company's options to the options provided by your partner's employer4. Understanding what has changed in your Company's benefits and policies.5. Assessing any changes in your life or in your life goals that warrant a change in your benefit enrollment elections for the year. Your benefits are part of your overall package and you should make sure they're working for you. What if you could see into your future and determine your best course of action? “Just imagine if you had tools to give you the edge, to steer you in the right direction and filter out erroneous information, leaving you to focus fully on exactly what you need to know. Imagine being able to anticipate the future and know where you are heading, what you need to be doing, and even creating your own innovations,” writes Anne. To help you do this, Anne has developed 10 strategies with practical exercises that combine hypnosis, visualization, and intuition work. Her process is supported by scientific research and case studies. The world is changing rapidly, and you can stay ahead of the change. Here are examples of Anne's 10 strategies: Be guided by your intuition: how intuition works and affects you personally; Use your brains: how the body has three brains and ways to tap into the wisdom of each to make effective decisions; and stretch time: ways to make time work for you, rather than against you, by slowing down and taking back control. Please join us Thursday to learn how you can anticipate the future, make the right choices, and thrive on change.

If you have had issues receiving or giving performance feedback (who hasn't?), this conversation is for you. Therese Huston’s role as a Cognitive Scientist at Seattle University involves finding ways to help professionals do their best work. Therese’s third book, Let's Talk, focuses on how to deliver feedback and create conversations that lead to growth and stronger relationships. Although you have probably read about this topic before, ‘Let’s Talk’ is different because Therese’s unique style of writing and communicating her findings is truly easy to understand, remember, and apply. ‘Let’s Talk’ could be an excellent handbook for every manager interested in delivering feedback in ways that create psychological safety, propose constructive solutions, and instill a collaborative framework. In our conversation we discuss different feedback styles, how to listen and set good intentions, how to set up two-way conversations, tips for creating psychological safety, best practices for frequency of feedback, and surprising research about the praise to criticism ratio. This conversation is filled with actionable tips and advice for managers, parents or anyone who wants to get better at sharing feedback. We also recommend our podcast conversation with Therese Huston from 2016 on her book How Women Decide: What’s True, What’s Not, and What Strategies Spark the Best Choices. In podcast episode 21, we discussed high-pressure decision making, the gender myth, and tactical advice that may help you when you’re stuck trying to make your own decisions. Follow us @meantforit

We here at Nathan Rabin’s Happy Cast love to keep our finger on the pulse of pop culture, so naturally this week’s episode is about the hit #1 movie everyone’s talking about, the smash hit that’s blowing up the box office… the John Travolta-Fred Durst project The Fanatic! This week on the pod, we partake in a double-dose of Travolta VOD madness with two of the three projects he’s dropped into video hell this year. First up is his woefully misguided, yet fascinatingly terrible character study The Fanatic (in which characters unironically listen to the director’s music and Travolta makes some Bold Acting Choices as an autistic, toxic fan). After that, we dredge up the convoluted, unexpectedly silly noir pastiche The Poison Rose, co-starring Brendan Fraser as a goofy Foghorn-Leghorn doctor with a lisp and a yellow fedora. Together, they form a deliciously demented cross-section of Travolta’s career at this point: a series of wigs, tics and scowls, grasping for relevance… or at least his next paycheck. Still, they’re batshit crazypants movies worth talking about, so listen to Nathan and Clint talk about them! 8:30 - The Fanatic 45:42 - The Poison Rose 1:02:10 - Mailbag 1:05:10 - Happy Places Follow us on Twitter at @RabinsCast (Nathan: @nathanrabin, Clint: @clintworthing)! If you are used to our usual theme song, do not adjust your iPod at the beginning of this episode. This week, we open music from this week's guest conversationalist, Micropixie. It is the title track to her latest album, Dark Sight of the Moon, and yes she does realize that sounds like another album you may have heard of. Throughout this episode, you will hear a few other songs sprinkled into the mix, including “Nocturnal Concrete Mountaineering” from her first album, Alice In Stevie Wonderland, as well as “New Year's Day” and “Back To Our Future” from the new one. Micropixie is one alter ego of musician, artist, and self-identifying intergalactic pop tart Neshma Friend. Micropixie is an alien come to Earth to study humans, perplexed at our behavior towards one another. She is not alone. Friend's other alter ego, Single Beige Female, isn't having a good go of it, either. Through the eyes of these characters, Friend is both pointed and playful, taking on weightier topics like gender politics and global conflict. And she does all of that over instrumental tracks that are laidback and groovy. As I say later on in this interview, this is definitely headphone music, ideal for a good set of old fashioned cans on a home stereo. Or these days, some noise-cancelling headphones Bose or Beats. Either way, this music demands your attention. We start the conversation talking about one of Friend's earlier jobs, exchanging currency for tourists in Paris, which she did not enjoy nearly as much as making music. You can find out more about what she's up to at micropixie.com, and search for her on Facebook and Twitter. She's be hosting an album release party at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco on April 9. Dark Sight of the Moon will be available as a BandCamp exclusive on April 12 and will get a wider release on April 26. Our featured track this week comes from comedian Jess Salomon, whom you may remember as our guest on episode 54 of the Department of Tangents Podcast. Salomon has an interesting back story. Before she started comedy, she studied law and worked for a U.N. tribunal on war crimes. A Canadian transplant, she now lives in New York, where she recorded this album in November at the New York Comedy Club. Her comedy can be political, but also a bit silly, as you'll hear on this track, “Duels.” The album is called All the Best Choices, and it was released earlier this week. Find out more about Jess at www.jesssalomon.com, and look for her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Sawtooth and Jen do the hard work of discussing the BEST choices they've made in their life. They also talk about cats, new tattoos, the New England Patriots, and Tom Brady, the G.O.A.T.!!!

Car crashes remain the leading cause of death and injury for children under 14 years of age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But many of those injuries and fatalities can be prevented if we follow best practices in passenger safety. Heather Darby, coordinator of passenger safety for the MN Department of Public Safety – Office of Traffic Safety, joins Marti & Erin for an important conversation about proper use of car seats, how to know if shoulder straps are providing the protection they should, why airbags pose a danger for children under 13 and how heavy winter clothes can compromise the effectiveness of seatbelts and car seats. Heather also helps Marti & Erin think about how to explain that a 12-year-old is safer in the back seat even if she’s the same height as Grandma! What are the ages of your children and what are the laws and best practices for keeping them safe in the car? What other adults drive your children and how well do they understand passenger safety rules and recommendations? To locate a Minnesota car seat check near you, click here. For centuries women didn't have the opportunity to make decisions outside the home. Now they do. But even today, after decades in the workplace and in public life, our decisions are questioned more than men's. In this show we meet Therese Huston, author of the new book How Women Decide: What's True, What's Not, and What Strategies Spark the Best Choices. We discuss myths around women and decision making, why we're still second-guessing Marissa Meyer two years after she canceled Yahoo's work-from-home policy, and what's at stake when women take a risk.
