Hurricane Helene Podcast Came ashore around 9 pm on September 26th. Hit the big bend area of Florida and traveled across Florida, Georgia, NW South Carolina, Western North Carolina and East/Central Tennessee Massive devastation and loss of life have occurred. Death toll has exceeded 100 and it is climbing. Whole towns have been destroyed and many large cities have been crippled. Interstate 40 and 26 have had road and bridge washouts. Side highways and other roadways have been destroyed and/or compromised. Charitable organizations are mobilizing to bring much needed food, water and shelter as soon as they can. What can you do? Plenty… It has been said that CASH is KING! And it is if you know who you are donating too. Our choice is Samaritans Purse. They are located in Boone NC and they're area has been hit hard. Money helps get the ball rolling and they also have volunteer needs to go into the areas that are in need. The rebuilding will take many years due to the shear scale of devastation. Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Mercy Chef's is highly recommended by one of our friends that is knowledgeable with their service. Contributions can be made at their website. Eastern Tennessee Foundation The state of Tennessee has set up a fund to assist recovery in the eastern part of the state. The Neighbor-to-Neighbor Disaster Relief fund operated through the Eastern Tennessee Foundation will help non-profit organizations across a 25-county region. You can donate here. Plus there is the Salvation Army and others as well. We try to keep the funds in local charities as much as possible and not pay it to a GoFundMe sight as the host takes a large percentage of the proceeds. Samaritanspurse.org is a great place to start, Rhonda and I are looking at schedules to be able to go and volunteer on a build project for Samaritan's Purse as soon as our schedule allows. We have been deep in prayer about what we can do for the long term during the recovery.

Positive connections between communities make a region like the High Country stronger. Partnership on one project can lead to future dialogue about other collaborative opportunities. The more we work to connect our local towns, counties, and their governmental entities, the better the chance for businesses and individuals to find similar ways to work with one another. The Blue Ridge Conservancy works each day to protect and preserve the places we love throughout the High Country. Unique projects like the Middle Fork Greenway, which will connect Boone and Blowing Rock with 6.5 miles of greenway trail along the middle fork of the New River, bring a physical connection to two towns that already work with one another on a variety of projects. The physical linkage between the two will only enhance the case for future partnerships between Watauga County's two largest municipalities. On this week's Mind Your Business, we learn more about a similar project, the Northern Peaks State Trail, that will one day connect Downtown Boone to Downtown West Jefferson. This project includes the permanent protection of an important High Country viewshed and will foster more access points to public lands that include several of the area's most scenic settings. Jordan Sellers, Northern Peaks State Trail for Blue Ridge Conservancy, tells us how the project came together, how environmental stewardship plays into the trail's development, and how the trail will positively impact the towns of Boone and West Jefferson. In 2018, Brad Moretz and Brenda Speckmann of Appalachian Ski Mountain initiated the Round-Up for the Middle Fork Greenway - a way to engage businesses in a month-long fundraiser for the up-and-coming Greenway project. That first year was a success, and since then, community businesses and individuals have rallied behind the Round-Up for the Middle Fork Greenway to raise nearly $700K. This money has leveraged over $5.5 million in state grants and Tourism Development Authority funding for land acquisition, trail construction, trailhead development, design, engineering, permitting, and feasibility studies. The outdoor economy is a vast subject. In Watauga County, that conversation encompasses the trails, streams, and other features we enjoy daily, while it also covers the businesses that make the "things" we use when we enjoy our favorite outdoor places.Hundreds of millions of dollars flow through our area annually when it comes to outdoor tourism spending.
