The United Kingdom has a new Queen Consort, Camilla. She is the first Queen of England to have been born a commoner since Catherine Parr (1547). Since the Norman conquest in 1066, English and British Royals have almost exclusively married other royals, usually as part of treaties with powerful neighboring nations. Of the 42 royal consorts, 13 have been French, 8 German, 5 Spanish, 4 Danish, 1 Dutch, 1 Italian, 1 Portuguese and 1 Scottish. But on a few, rare occasions an English monarch put his heart (or his lust) before his head and chose instead to make an English woman his Queen. There have been 9 English Queens of England, one was a member of a rival branch of the English royal family. 2 were from noble families and 6 were commoners... Phil is very much occupied by Australia this week. He starts by sharing his thoughts on a recent boycott of an important Writer's Festival in Adelaide because of a row about open support for Hamas and its murderous actions on 7/10. The boycott was by mostly left-of-centre wing writers and broadcasters, some of whom Phil has worked with and knows well. The British Royal family are making international headlines again today-after King Charles stripped his brother Andrew of his princely titles and decided to evict him from Royal Lodge. RTE's London Correspondent Tommy Meskill has more.
Three generations of Royals have brutally frozen out their own siblings - Elizabeth, William and now Charles, who’s buckled to pressure from the Prince and Princess of Wales to strip Prince Andrew of his title.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Buckingham Palace says Britain's King Charles is stripping his younger brother, Andrew of his ‘prince' title, amid continuing controversy over his links to the late sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein. It means he will be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. The British Royal family has faced growing scrutiny over Andrew's titles and living arrangements. Buckingham Palace described the action as necessary. But it noted that Andrew continues to deny allegations against him. Also in the programme: As President Trump says he's ordered new nuclear weapons tests - the body responsible for monitoring them says that would be 'harmful' and 'destabilising'- so what's behind his announcement? AP correspondent Karen Chammas reports on a historic step for the Catholic church and the Church of England as the King and Pope pray together at the Vatican.
On Tuesday, almost six months after she took her own life, the posthumous memoir of Virginia Giuffre went on sale. ‘Nobody's Girl', which was completed by Giuffre before her death, details how she feared she might “die a sex slave” at the hands of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Giuffre also says she was made to have sex with Prince Andrew on three occasions.Prince Andrew, who has always denied any wrongdoing, and who reached a financial settlement with Giuffre in 2022, announced last week he would voluntarily no longer use his titles, including the Duke of York. He said he had made the decision following a discussion with King Charles, his family, and in consultation with Prince William.Meanwhile, MPs in Britain moved on Tuesday to lodge a parliamentary motion to strip Prince Andrew of his dukedom, with pressure also mounting on the British government to address the prince's luxury residence in Windsor. It was recently revealed the King's younger brother has not paid rent on the Royal Lodge for more than two decades. The House of Commons, which is not permitted to discuss issues that reflect badly on Britain's royal family, has maintained an uneasy silence as the Prince Andrew scandal continues to grow legs. Why are UK politicians not allowed to debate Royal scandals, or any issues that reflect badly on Royals, in Westminster? And is that about to change?Irish Times London correspondent Mark Paul discusses the latest revelations from Giuffre's memoir and examines the steps needed for Westminster to take stronger action against the disgraced prince.Presented by Sorcha Pollak, produced by Suzanne Brennan and Andrew McNair. Windsor became the official surname of the British Royal family on 17th July 1917, when King George V issued a proclamation declaring that “The Name of Windsor is to be borne by His Royal House and Family and Relinquishing the Use of All German Titles and Dignities.” The decision to change the family name came amid strong anti-German feeling following air raids over London, and in particular the bombing of a school in the East End by Gotha bombers - by coincidence, the same name as the royal family. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discover who was responsible for picking ‘Windsor' as the family's new name; uncover the Royal Albert Hall's flawed response to the onset of World War One; and reveal the REAL Royal surname… Further Reading: • ‘British royal family change their name to Windsor' (The Guardian, 1917): https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/from-the-archive-blog/2017/jul/17/british-royal-family-windsor-name-change-1917 • ‘Jeremy Paxman: A hundred years of Windsors but still the Queen is partly German (FT, 2017): https://www.ft.com/content/b80a9dde-f1f0-11e6-95ee-f14e55513608 • ‘'The British Royal Family Needed to Seem Less German During WWI' (Smithsonian Channel, 2019): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZaOlJajows This episode originally aired in 2023 Love the show? What's the point of the publicly funded British Royal family in the modern world? Andrew Gold puts the monarchy under a microscope on this Skeptical Sunday! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: The British monarchy is a centuries-old institution that has had a significant impact on the UK's culture, politics, and history. While the monarch's role is largely ceremonial, the royal family still holds influence and plays a significant part in British society. The British Royal Family receives public funding through the Sovereign Grant, which is calculated as a percentage of the profits made by the Crown Estate. The Sovereign Grant covers official expenses, while the monarch also has personal income from private estates. The monarchy faces challenges in maintaining its relevance in an increasingly democratic and progressive world. The royal family must balance tradition with adapting to changing societal values and expectations. The popularity of individual members of the royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry, can significantly impact public perception of the monarchy as a whole. Despite the controversies and challenges surrounding the British monarchy, it remains an integral part of the nation's identity and continues to captivate people worldwide. By focusing on their roles as symbols of unity, continuity, and tradition, while also embracing positive change and engaging in meaningful charitable work, the royal family can maintain its relevance and contribute to the well-being of the British people and the global community.
