What if the very thing you've been silencing… is the key to your freedom? In this deeply moving and soul-stirring episode of The Human Potential Podcast, I sit down with The Brothers Koren, former rockstars turned spiritual guides of sound. We explore a radical idea: that your voice isn't just a tool — it's a portal to healing, presence, and personal truth. This isn't about singing in tune. It's about reclaiming the parts of yourself you were told were “too much,” “too loud,” or “not enough.”

Every time I think I should throw in the towel on our weekly show, someone comes out of the woodwork and tells me we saved them during Covid. Made them cry when I talked about losing my brother. Shares something important with me. Hugs me at a conference and asks about my feisty kids because they soooooo relate. Introduces their daughter to me for mentorship. Sends me a guest no one knows yet but should. Thanks me for being real when so much feels like bullshit. My favorite word has always been permission. Or maybe truth. I don't know why we need give ourselves and each other permission to be human. To be real, flawed, imperfect, hungry, trying, growing, learning, loved. We make actual business cases for it and call it recognition, engagement, DEI, belonging, culture, our shiny new EVP. You guys. When everything is changing, remember nothing has changed. The world needs our full humanity, our full community, our full hearts. And we need each other. Our silly little show grew to over 3,500+ weekly audience members because we created space for all this. I don't know why I need reminding, but sometimes I do. The Now of Work is a community for HR, work tech, AI, all of that....and humans. Not so silly, I guess. I brought my friend Thorald Koren back to the Now of Work community because you should know him. He's so human he's not even on LinkedIn.

How do you move forward when you feel blocked? Do you know that you have a beautiful power to voice what you want in the world? But what if you don't feel safe in expression? Lisa continues the conversation today with our guests Issac and Thorald Koren, better known as the musical duo “The Brothers Koren.” They are transformational voice leaders, music mentors, and artists passionate about hearing “the World's song, one voice at time.”   How do you get into a safe space with sound? Finding the voice through song can be terrifying but the Koren Brothers share their ideas of 5 ways of being to create a safe space around sound. They ask a series of questions -- Can you be generous with your sound? Can you find something you like and accept it? Many people do not like the sound of their own voice, especially when it's recorded.   Can you seek out something new of value? Can you free yourself of judgment? They talk about reclaiming your voice after voice trauma. You can still have an experience when you feel deeply. Allow a song to tear you open – it involves taking a risk. A part of us may be waiting to be felt.   Can you be curious about your experience? Can you make up your own melody? Can you trust the process? It's freeing when you allow your voice to come out. Explore what's possible.   Are you willing? Can you flow into the moment and allow yourself to meet your voice as you are today? We live such a willful life – but what if we let it flow instead? Be willing, rather than willful. Let it out.   The Brothers Koren sing live on air and share their song “Everything's Changing.” They invite the audience to sing along, no matter where you are. They talk about coping with all the changes on our planet and how using our voices can help.  Harmony is always there to lean into, but so is dissonance. It's up to us to choose. When we choose harmony, it magnetizes what we want. The most beautiful harmonies accept differences. Ask, how can you see another perspective? See the relations between the notes. Be in awe.   Can we stay in gratitude? Can you be awe of the fact that your voice is your own personal blueprint? Can you dare to make a sound without worrying how good it is?   Find your note, honor your note, and be interested in finding harmony with another note. This is very similar to flowing on the dance floor. Use your voice to find what feels good for you. Music holds so many memories. We all have the instrument within ourselves and can use this to embody and bring in more joy, balance, and harmony in our lives! The Brothers Koren have played to millions of listeners worldwide and have toured with P!NK, Coldplay, and Rod Stewart as The Kin. They now foster first-time talent, not only those who want to go into the music industry but all of those who want to tap into their hidden voices. When it came time to take a break from touring, they asked themselves, “Are we really serving the greater whole?” After contemplating the answers, and although they made their dream come alive by playing on major stages worldwide, they made the decision to move to Los Angeles and began working with people who wanted to find their inner voice.  This is Part 2 of the interview.  For more info about their upcoming online class, visit: https://shiftnetwork.infusionsoft.com/go/hvkb/lisagarr/.  Info: BrothersKoren.com

Do you sometimes feel blocked?  What do you do when that happens? How do you move forward? Do you know that you have a beautiful power to voice what you want in the world? Our guests today are Issac and Thorald Koren, better known as the musical duo “The Brothers Koren.” They are transformational voice leaders, music mentors, and artists passionate about hearing “the World's song, one voice at time.”   They have played to millions of listeners worldwide and have toured with P!NK, Coldplay, and Rod Stewart as The Kin. If your soul is not satisfied and if you don't know what to do next, ask the Universe to assist. They explained about the Power of Request. Get to know yourself by using song and voice. This method is not just for musicians, but anyone who wants to delve deeper.   Always being overly interested and curious, they were both natural coaches and mentors and decided to share their skills. They especially loved the audience singing along with their songs so when the opportunity came to coach a first-time singer, they happily did it. They developed a mentoring program whereby they coach people who think they cannot sing to express themselves. They realized what they were doing was transformational. They worked with people with voice trauma and people who were afraid to speak or sing in public.   So what are people looking for who want to learn more about their voice? They are looking for a sense of home in themselves. This is an ancient art. All of our ancestors had the ability to use their voice. It's both a power and a vulnerability. Although we may compare ourselves, we must realize everyone has their own unique voice. No two voices are alike. It can be exciting, but also awkward. Maybe you, too, have lost your dreams of wanting to sing?   And it's not just the sound of our voice. It's how we listen and it's at the core of mental health. We can be afraid or disconnected from the instrument of our voice. It's so often about reconnection.  In scary times of anxiety or depression, it can be healed through finding our voice. We have oftentimes been comparative or competitive when we think about how we sound. The Brothers Koren find that people just want to return to their bodies and simply exhale and have ease.   The negative self-talk and those negative voices are ingrained and it's hard to find clarity and harmony. These internal voices can say we are not enough. They are protective, but traumatic. They become the loudest voices. Many women are not allowing their voices to be heard or are afraid to say something because it can be dangerous. It can be unsafe to express, so people dim their light.   The voice is a reflection. It is a full-body instrument. The voice is a harmonizer.  They talk about people singing together, such as in a choir, and explain how to listen to the space between two notes. How do we be in harmony? We can work with dissonance and find a way to wrap around uncomfortable emotions. We know the way to do it, but we must be willing to look inward. Can we find “home” within our body first? Can we meet ourselves as we are today? We must be compassionate to ourselves. Be willing to feel the feelings and be ok with it all, no matter what comes up.   Issac and Thorald Koren teach courses and classes. When people realize their voices are shut down or they were never able to express themselves, the Brothers Koren help people to reclaim their power. They also work with singers who have left their music and want to return. They also work with people who know if they use this medium, they know they will open in other ways. It's the ancient biological birthright of us all to use our voice. This is Part 1 of the interview. In this episode, I really enjoyed sitting down with two of my favorite brothers, Isaac and Thorald Koren. Formally known as The Kin, The Brothers Koren are transformational voice leaders who have appeared live on Conan, earned a Gold Record, and performed for over a million people while touring with the likes of Coldplay, Pink, Bon Jovi, and Rod Stewart.  After getting to experience living what they thought was their dream, they found themselves feeling unsatisfied and burdened. They felt the weight of the expectations they and the rest of the world placed on their voices. Then in a chance moment, completely unexpected, they tapped into the Miracle Zone and created their unique work that's impacting the world.   Today, they help nurture and foster voices of people all over the world so that each person (singers and “non-singers” alike) can fully embody who they are. Their mission to help free and uplift ALL voices. I've had the privilege of being coached by the Brothers Koren myself, and they're truly  masters at their craft. They've even presented at Your Year of Miracles Retreat, where they created with us the Living in the Miracle Zone theme song. You can hear it in the intro and outro of each podcast episode. Can you believe it only took them 15 minutes to create!?   Join us as we dive into the miraculous nature of the voice!  Find how you can authentically express yourself and break free from any blocks that may keep you from living your miraculous life. “Magic occurs when you let go of control. It's better to share an idea that's almost ready, rather than wait until it's perfect.“  - The Brothers Koren     What we talked about:  Isaac's and Thorald's shift to fully living in the Miracle Zone (4:16)  How you can heal from feeling disempowered or unable to fully express yourself (8:06) What happens when you open up to the inner voice (12:52)  Recognizing your false voice and freeing yourself into truthful expression (16:46)  Isaac and Thorald invite you to experience your true voice in real-time (17:16)  Letting go and getting into the flow of creative energy (23:13)  How daring to suck is intimately entangled with daring to be great (27:34)  The Embodied Voice Summit (29:34)  Beautiful last words (31:31)     Favorite quotes from the episode:  "We've all been pressured by presentation, performance comparison, and competition. And that reverses the creative process that nature intended. Often, it creates a narrow keyhole where we're trying to be excellent through a small space. And so it creates an inhibited, fearful environment. When we flip it back around and set new ways of being, that kindergartener who is playful, messy, and part of the human experience gets to come back to the surface. "- Thorald Koren "We find that the voice is one of those amazing magnetic qualities of the human instrument that calls the world or what is there for you, towards you. Expressing your voice gets you in what you beautifully call the Miracle Zone." - Isaac Koren "If voice has been calling you and you have pushed it to the wayside, or if you were inhibited at a young age and bought into the belief that you didn't sing, or you didn't speak, or you didn't rise and lead others, it's time to let go and express yourself. Your creativity is in there, somewhere under your ribcage, and wants to come out. Just do it, make a mess, and see what occurs." - Thorald Koren    Connect with The Brothers Koren:  Website  The Embodied Voice Summit    Connect with Us:   Website Instagram Find Your Miracle Superpower  https://www.facebook.com/groups/livinginthemiraclezone/

In this episode Host Helen Lee interviews Bruce Cryer, who was the former CEO and founding member of the HeartMath Institute in the US and current Executive Director of the of The College of Integrative Health at Salem University. After reaching a crisis point in his life and passing through it, Bruce began to offer his insights into his revived spirit to others who referred to him as a "Renaissance Man" because of his ability to massively reinvent himself. In sync with Helen, Bruce believes in a global movement of spiritual improvement powered by creativity instantly shared worldwide via our modern communication network. With this in mind Bruce founded Renaissance Human, a consultancy designed to reintroduce the power of creativity in the business community and on into the wider world. With their shared drive to circumvent our global difficulties with all the positivity humans have to offer, Bruce and Helen discuss our way forward and what it will really take for us to all transform and thrive together. KEY TAKEAWAYS In 1991 Bruce co-created HeartMath, a foundation dedicated in delving deeper into the spiritual power and significance of the heart. Previously, for centuries, the heart was seen by many cultures as the centre of creativity, warmth, love, spirit, power and empathy. With scientific advancement and knowledge of its physical purpose its image was reduced to little more than an efficient pump. HeartMath was interested in this past image of the heart and creating a new model of physical and spiritual health combined by placing the heart back at the centre using simple tools and models to reduce stress in peoples lives. Bruces transition came when he faced two years of life threatening health problems and in the aftermath felt a feeling of rebirth. Returning to artistic endeavours he came up with the term “Renaissance Human” to describe his experience. He believes we all have the power to constantly invent new aspects and parts of ourselves, to learn and reinvigorate our existences with creativity. The pandemic, due to forcing a change on peoples lives, has encouraged people to examine themselves and their place and reconsider their path in life. Many people, much more than ever before, are beginning to consider their spiritual selves and leaving their previous jobs and lifestyles in search of something more fulfilling and creative. With current modern pressures and integration of family and personal, perhaps also health problems, the concept of slowing your life down to cope seems alien to our way of living. As much as we want to go faster and complete everything as quickly as possible, as a system, it is definitely not working. If we want to perform at high level we need to learn to vary our speed. Unfortunately for many people the power to create is suppressed. We are pigeon holed in our jobs into ‘staying in our lane’ and ignoring our inner urge to create. All of us are actually made of creative energy and to ignore this is not only a waste but can be damaging to ourselves. We are missing out on the best humanity has to offer. BEST MOMENTS ‘When you say the word ‘renaissance’ it brings to mind the words ‘revival’ and ‘rebirth’. That is very much what I am also advocating.’ ‘It’s a powerful set of techniques based on 30 years of rigorous scientific work as well, so its been a joy.’ ‘One of the things that makes humans unique is, sure we have the power to create life, all species have that, but we also have the power to keep recreating our own life.’ ‘Do I want to keep putting up with that boss that I can’t stand and that corporate culture that I can’t stand? Do I really want that? And a lot of people are saying “no”.’ ‘By taking that extra few minutes and saying “no, no, there are so many levels of efficiency in my system that are possible and right now I’m not in an efficient state.”.’ ‘So many people feel like they are in a box in their job and they have ideas, but they are never encouraged and so there is all this untapped energy. Organisations have to learn how to support the creative energy of their staff and encourage them outside of work. We should be helping people find what makes their hearts sing.’ ABOUT THE GUEST BRUCE CRYER Bruce Cryer has had a lifelong fascination with human performance and well-being. He began as a singer/dancer/actor in New York, including two years in The Fantasticks, the world’s longest running musical. Bruce has been adjunct faculty at Stanford University since 1997 and part of the founding team of HeartMath in 1991 and later, CEO of the Institute. HeartMath’s breakthrough research and techniques were instrumental in the explosion of biohacking and performance optimization over the past 30 years. He has worked with organizations such as Mayo Clinic, Kaiser Permanente, NASA, executives, and high performance athletes. Bruce is co-author of the Harvard Business Review article “Pull the Plug on Stress”, on executive health, stress, and performance. A two year health crisis convinced him to embrace his innate creativity and Bruce now enjoys robust health. He recently released Renaissance Human, an album of original songs co-created with the Brothers Koren and he performs regularly in New York. He is Executive Director of The College of Integrative Health at Salem University. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Brothers Koren with Daybreaker over Zoom video!!  The Daybreaker community releases ‘Joy Generation' a collaboration with ace songwriters The Brothers Koren!'Joy Generation' is a unique and inspiring song crowd-sourced in real-time during a creative jam session by 350 members of the Daybreaker community. In case you haven't heard, Daybreaker is one of the most popular and innovative organizations in the wellness and dance space, fusing yoga and meditation with next-level dance events in unique spaces around the world. They have toured arenas with Oprah and been featured by The Today Show, New York Times, Mashable, Elle, WSJ, Buzzfeed, and Vice, and partnered with Nike, Samsung, AMEX, and more. They have collaborated on events with artists like Gloria Estefan, Boyz II Men, SOFI TUKKER, Above & Beyond, Dionne Warwick, and more. The never before attempted song-writing method resulted in ‘Joy Generation', a song that recalls the most epic and exuberant moments of Mumford And Sons, MGMT and The Polyphonic Spree, and yet is so much more, expressing the relief and sense of communion that is balm for these times. In March 2020 we began a new experiment hosting dance parties from our living room. We ended up serving over 200K people in 112 countries to dance and invite joy into their homes during the height of the pandemic when spirits needed it the most.We asked our community members to stick around after to write our new Daybreaker anthem with us. 350+ community members stayed to attempt something never done before: to lace together a song while miles apart, expressing the palpable anticipation of a return to IRL. We longed for an anthem that would take us out of the darkness and into a new more hopeful generation. We sat down in front of our little cameras, intent to harmoniously surface verses about the start of a new cultural Renaissance. The Brothers Koren masterfully shepherded us through the process of co-creating the song. Someone would spontaneously unmute themselves and provide a note, then another, and another: ideas. phrases, lyrics floated across the web. We jammed, we cried, we laughed...And then suddenly, we had an anthem, freeing and naming us: The Joy Generation.' We want to hear from you! A two-year health crisis (which entailed cancer, life-challenging staff infections, and double hip replacements) convinced him to focus his energies on creativity and how organizations and individuals can tap into the full creative capacity of everyone.  Bruce also shared that it was during this season of health challenges that he was also mourning the loss of his mother and the end of his marriage.Bruce needed to connect with his creativity. There is a metaphysical side of music we rarely hear about. Consider the question: Will music survive if humans die out? The Brothers Koren - Isaac and Thorald - call this "musical cosmology." The idea, which Isaac first explored at Northeastern University, is that we all have a unique way of hearing music (eardrums are as unique as fingerprints), and by understanding how we process it, we can understand ourselves. They've been teaching the concept for six years now on "Songwriter's Journey" retreats, which have produced some songs that might be on your playlists (we found out about them through Monique DeBose, who was on the podcast in September). These Aussie brothers formed a group called The Kin in 2001, landed a deal with Interscope, and toured with Pink in 2013. These days, in addition to their duties as musical zen masters, they have a group called Fransancisco, which is set to release their first album in 2021. In this episode, we take a deep dive into our musical cosmologies and hear them perform a few songs. Recording artists, Isaac and Thorald Koren (The Kin) got everything they asked for; record deals, international notoriety, playing big arenas (touring with Coldplay, PINK, Bon Jovi, and Rod Stewart) — but hadn't quantified what to wish for or how to transact for it. Naively assuming their talent, passion, and fame would eventuate into their personal and financial satisfaction they confronted a sea of indifference and inventoried their lessons to help others. They launched the Alchemy of Creative Expression or ACE, developing a method to help the talented musician, artist, or executive unleash their unique voice and turn their talent into gold. In our guru talk, we'll hear co-founder Kirkland Tibbels address the importance of both knowing your aims - and transacting accordingly.
