He is passionate about understanding how our brains work, and how to use that knowledge to help people make deep, permanent change in their lives — with the goal of reducing suffering in the world at large. Dr. Jud is the director of research and innovation at Brown University's Mindfulness Center, where he also serves as an associate professor in Behavioral and Social Sciences at the School of Public Health and Psychiatry at the School of Medicine at Brown University. Additionally, he is the executive medical director of behavioral health at Sharecare, the digital health company helping people manage all their health in one place, and a research affiliate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a psychiatrist and internationally known expert in mindfulness training for treating addictions, Dr. Jud has developed and tested novel mindfulness programs for habit change, including both in-person and app-based treatments for anxiety, emotional eating, and smoking (Unwinding Anxiety, Eat Right Now and Craving to Quit). Based on the success of these programs in the lab, he co-founded MindSciences, Inc. to create app-based digital therapeutic versions of these programs for a wider audience, working with individuals, corporations, and health systems to put effective, evidence-based behavior change guidance in the hands of people struggling with unwanted behaviors and “everyday addictions.” Sharecare, Inc. acquired MindSciences in 2020. Dr. Jud has also studied the underlying neural mechanisms of mindfulness using standard and real-time fMRI and EEG neurofeedback, adding to the understanding of the brain's “Default Mode Network” and the role of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) in self-referential thinking.  He regularly gives talks on the intersection of modern science and ancient meditative practices, helping to expose a modern audience to specific techniques and insights first discovered 2,500 years ago. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, trained US Olympic athletes and coaches, foreign government ministers and corporate leaders. His work has been featured on 60 Minutes, TED, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Today Show, TIME, The Washington Post, Forbes, CNN, BBC, NPR, and more. His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and American Heart Association, among others. This week's conversation is with Robert Lurye, a mindfulness meditation and yoga teacher who offers classes on "unwinding anxiety." Robert's background as an artist and animator provided him with an interest in human behavior and emotional expression (as well as some pretty stressful work experiences). We talk about how common anxiety is, especially in these uncertain times, and how understanding the habit loops of anxiety can help us find some freedom around it. Robert shares mindfulness practices that can help us observe our mental and emotional states without getting so lost in them, as well as embodied movement practices that help to get us out of our heads. One of my favorite parts of this episode is when he talks about some neuroscience research that showed meditators had remarkable ability to be present with pain, minus the dread and anticipation that most of us experience. Robert Lurye is an artist, educator, and meditation practitioner who loves teaching the ancient wisdom and modern science of mindfulness.  He is a certified MBSR teacher through Brown University's Mindfulness Center, a CYT 200 yoga instructor, and a facilitator for Mindfulness-Based Habit Change programs that address unwanted habits from cigarettes to smart phones, emotional eating, and anxiety. Robert also teaches mindfulness programs at InsightLA, Long Beach Mediation, University of Southern California and facilitates sitting groups for the LGBTQ+ community.  He's been a computer animation artist since 1985 working on feature film, television and video game productions. He earned a Master of Education degree from The Ohio State University and has taught art at Ohio State, Texas A&M, and University of Texas, Austin. Get it here.  Low risk drinking guidelines from the NIAAA: Healthy men under 65: No more than 4 drinks in one day and no more than 14 drinks per week. Healthy women (all ages) and healthy men 65 and older: No more than 3 drinks in one day and no more than 7 drinks per week. One drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor. So remember that a mixed drink or full glass of wine are probably more than one drink. Abstinence from alcohol Abstinence from alcohol is the best choice for people who take medication(s) that interact with alcohol, have health conditions that could be exacerbated by alcohol (e.g. liver disease), are pregnant or may become pregnant or have had a problem with alcohol or another substance in the past. Benefits of “low-risk” drinking Following these guidelines reduces the risk of health problems such as cancer, liver disease, reduced immunity, ulcers, sleep problems, complications of existing conditions, and more. It also reduces the risk of depression, social problems, and difficulties at school or work. And everywhere we turn we're bombarded with social media and sensory input of all kinds. Don't despair. Dr. Jud Brewer has our backs. Brewer is the Director of Research and Innovation at Brown University's Mindfulness Center and he's written a book called Unwinding Anxiety. We talk about scientific ways to calm down and even get to that gratifying feeling of joy. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Tay Glass and Alex Wolfe.
