A call from a group called “1 Million March 4 Children” drew protestors in dozens of cities across Canada over LGBTQ-inclusive education and school policies. According to the organizers' website, the day was supposed to be about advocating for the elimination of a number of things in schools: the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) curriculum, pronouns, “gender ideology” and mixed bathrooms. Coast-to-coast, they were met with counter-protesters who said they were there to defend LGBTQ rights. Today, Mel Woods, a senior editor with Xtra Magazine, recaps what they saw at the Vancouver protests and what turnout looked like across the country. Then we speak with Alex Harris, a grade 12 student in New Brunswick, about how the controversy over inclusive education policies and curricula is affecting LGBTQ students.

So please have a look at the list of cities and book your tickets and spread the word! This is going to take teamwork to make happen and we can only do it together. I'll be at the Sept 26th Montreal screening for a Q&A following the film (I wish I could be at all of them!). Hopefully there will be tree planter reunions across the country! How to make it happen: Go to the website. Click on “Get Showtimes”. Scroll to your closest city. Book a ticket. Spread the word! Note that each city link has a “countdown” number of how many tickets still need to be sold for the screening to go ahead. https://thefoyer.demand.film/forest-for-the-trees Note: Toronto folks, please be patient and stay tuned for a screening later in October (the Toronto premiere has been promised to a film festival held in Toronto in October, that's why it's not part of the Sept 26th lineup). Without Losing Your Cool

All right, all right. All right. Friends, I'm so excited for all of you to meet today's Without Losing Your Cool guest, Helena Kirk, who's 16 years old. And she's a dynamo. She's a force of nature. And I am telling you when you are finished listening to her story and her work, you're gonna stand in awe of her in the same way that I do. This is a young woman who at just three years old, endured 841 days of chemotherapy, and 650 medical procedures to beat leukemia. It was during her cancer journey that she learned about the inequitable access to childhood cancer treatment that kids here in Canada had, and how because of this, a tragic number of kids were losing their battle to cancer. And when she went into remission, and her health was in good order, instead of just taking it in stride and carrying on her merry way, she decided in 2018, that her work was not done. And she founded Helena's Hope—an advocacy group with a mission to create a National Childhood Cancer strategy, systems changes, and research funding. In 2018 she founded Helena's Hope, an advocacy group with a mission to create a National Childhood Cancer Strategy, systems changes and research funding.  She managed to rally over 150 families dealing with childhood cancer across the country, and received signatures from over 30 cancer organizations and 30 pediatric oncologists for a budget proposal. As a result, the Liberal government recently committed $30 million in funding for childhood cancer research. Helena was the 2017 Children's Miracle Network Champion and the 2019 Ontario Junior Citizen Award recipient and was recognized twice in the House of Commons in Ontario. And the work is being started all because of an 11-year-old girl who now is just a regular 16-year-old girl and in grade 11. In her spare time, she does what any other 16-year-old kid would do. She likes playing video games, she does martial arts and of course, loves anything to do with fantasy and sci-fi. I cannot wait to get into her story and her work and share it all with you todayA message from Helena:"I want Canadian kids to have the best chance at survival. We are focused on getting the first ever National Childhood Cancer strategy and in systems changes to ensure fast, fair and safe access to trials and treatments no matter where a child with cancer lives in Canada or how much money their family has. I want more kids to survive cancer like I did."Loved this episode?  I know, me too, friend! Me too! For weeks, demonstrations in support of hereditary chiefs of the Wet'suwet'en First Nation in northern British Columbia have resulted in in unprecedented rallies, blockaded railroads and intentionally disrupted commuter routes for drivers and transit users alike -- not to mention attempts to stall legislators in the capitol and even taking their placards to the premier's own home. The issue of whether or not to allow the Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline has deeply fractured the Wet'suwet'en community and Canadians at large have been divided on whether protests are lawful and acceptable expressions of support for First Nations or illegal acts of disruption that should result in arrest. As the days go on, the impacts are increasingly felt by people across the country. Hard at work to report on the daily goings-on and the larger picture of what's at play are journalists scrambling to get to the latest barricade, protest and sit-in -- despite increasing hostility from the demonstrators themselves. It's a challenging but important task, so reporters and videographers are getting creative in order to cover all aspects of the developments, despite significant logistical and geographic hurdles. BTS with CTV Vancouver host Penny Daflos discusses the complexities of reporting on this issue with reporter Allison Hurst and their colleague, Melanie Nagy, Vancouver bureau chief for CTV National News.
