In which the Mister joins me in reviewing CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (2014), from directors Anthony and Joe Russo and a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and based off Marvel characters created by Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby. The "Winter Soldier" storyline by Steve Epting, Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark is also credited. Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America (Chris Evans) returns in the thrilling second film of the Captain America trilogy. After Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is assassinated, and he is branded a fugitive and hunted by SHIELD, the story masterfully combines the espionage/thriller genres with the super hero story to tell a compelling story where Cap must confront his past to discover the truth behind a sinister conspiracy to take over the world. The film clocks in at 2 h and 46 m, is rated PG-13 and can be found streaming currently on Max. In this episode, we kick-off Phase 3 of the MCU with quite possibly the biggest movie so far: Captain America: Civil War! Does Cap 3, or Avengers 2.5 as some call it, hold up well or is it too much of a good thing? Political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability when the actions of the Avengers lead to collateral damage. The new status quo deeply divides members of the team. Captain America (Chris Evans) believes superheroes should remain free to defend humanity without government interference. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) sharply disagrees and supports oversight. As the debate escalates into an all-out feud, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) must pick a side. Or is it sneakier than S.H.I.E.L.D? After the cataclysmic events in New York with his fellow Avengers, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Chris Evans), lives in the nation's capital as he tries to adjust to modern times. An attack on a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague throws Rogers into a web of intrigue that places the whole world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and a new ally, the Falcon, Rogers struggles to expose an ever-widening conspiracy, but he and his team soon come up against an unexpected enemy. Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home has been released, which of Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the best? Every MCU Spider-Man movie was directed by Jon Watts, who joins Sam Raimi as the two directors who helmed a complete Spider-Man trilogy. Although Sony retains the movie rights to Spider-Man and his universe of characters, a deal struck with Marvel Studios allowed the web-slinger to join the MCU starting in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, which finally allowed Spidey to interact with Marvel's other superheroes and even join the Avengers. So far, Tom Holland has starred as Peter Parker and his wall-crawling alter ego six times in the MCU: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and his trio of films which can be unofficially dubbed the "Home" trilogy. The Marvel Studios-produced Spider-Man trilogy wildly and purposefully differs from the three Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire and the two Amazing Spider-Man movies starring Andrew Garfield. Holland's Peter Parker was fully integrated into the MCU from the get-go and Marvel Studios strategically opted not to repeat the Spider-Man tropes already seen in the previous five Spider-Man movies, such as showing the death of Uncle Ben. But audiences were overjoyed to see Spider-Man living in the same world as the Avengers after so many years of being the lone superhero in his universe. With the retirement of MCU's central heroes like Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) after Avengers: Endgame, Holland's Spider-Man has ascended to become one of, if not the new flagship hero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Obviously, given the enormous success and popularity of Tom Holland's Spider-Man films, Sony announced its plans to continue its mega-successful Spider-Man movie franchise, hopefully with Holland continuing to wear Spidey's skintight suit. What the next phase for Spider-Man will entail has yet to be revealed, although Holland is expected to join an upcoming MCU crossover film, possibly Avengers 5. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: No Way Home definitively ends the saga of Peter Parker's MCU high school years, which encompassed the entire Spider-Man "Home" trilogy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support

Cellular is one of the few movies that we've watched for the pod that we actually all enjoyed. It was bad, but it fun. A pre-Captain America Chris Evans proves that attractive white people can get away with anything, as his character Ryan commits a spree of crimes all over LA (to be fair, in an effort to save a kidnapped family). We couldn't decide what was more unbelievable, Kim Basinger's Jessica hotwiring a heap of electronic rubble into a working landline, or the 4k video and sound quality of Ryan's Nokia 6600.The best performance is definitely from William H. Macy, who was funny and weirdly charming as a soon-to-be-retired cop who just wants to open up a day spa with his wife. Whether they meant to be or not, everyone is hilarious (except the totally forgetful patriarch of the Martin family tbh) and this movie is a great watch.

Phase 3, Episode 1. We're back and so are the Avengers as they're teaming up to take on the ultimate bad guy....each other! It's Captain America: Civil War! Directed by The Russo Brothers and starring pretty much everyone - Captain America (Chris Evans) returns as the titular hero to face off against Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) and hero registration. We know... Exciting. We're also not alone for this episode as we're joined by former Editor at DC Comics and owner of Infinite Heroes Comic Shop, Paul Santos. Paul helps us break down the movie and its differences from the comic event its based on. Another first. Mike read the comic beforehand. Pat made him. Listen as Mike struggles to understand the choices made in the movie, as well as getting sick and tired of hearing about the Sokovia Accords. Apple TV + has a few shows on their channel that seems pretty interesting that we took the time to check out when it came up. This month it was Captain America (Chris Evans) playing a lawyer who's son is a suspect for killing another child. The drama in which we go through pulls you back and forward of did he do it or didn't he. 8 episodes and an open ended conclusion of did his son really do it. This also was based on a book that was written in 2012 by a lawyer and writer.

In this episode we review the new movie by Rian Johnson Knives Out a murder mystery with Daniel Craig and Captain America Chris Evans himself!
Hi everyone! One of the filmmakers that turned me back on to film was Rian Johnson. It happened about a third of the way into BRICK, when I found myself totally engrossed with no idea where the film was heading. After a brief jaunt within the Star Wars universe for THE LAST JEDI, he’s back with another excellent film, this time a murder mystery like no other and every other. Andrew will be up in a minute with his thoughts, as this was a Fantastic Fest feature, but I can’t recommend it enough. Before the review, we’ll have a promo for our good friends at the Comics in Motion podcast. Every episode, Dave and Chris review a film based on a comic book, providing a lot of key backstory for appreciating the subtler elements. Don’t miss their guest reviews as part of Reign of Terror 2019, first for ALIEN VS PREDATOR (Episode #605), then later incognito for 30 DAYS OF NIGHT (Episode #626). I certainly appreciated their help. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @ComicsInMotionP and on Facebook @ComicsInMotionPodcast. Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Hello film fans! Andrew here. Pinch-hitting on Matinee Monday to bring you perhaps the most mainstream film to premiere at this year’s Fantastic Fest. You just might be familiar with director Rian Johnson’s previous film STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII- THE LAST JEDI. So, there are three major films releasing around Thanksgiving. FROZEN II is already killing it at the box office and we haven’t even hit the holiday weekend. A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD with the obvious casting of Tom Hanks is capitalizing on the Mr. Rogers renaissance sparked by last year’s all too similarly titled WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?. Today’s film is the third of the trio. And what to do they all have in common? Near-universal critical acclaim and, in my mind, they’re all family films. Today’s movie is KNIVES OUT, written and directed by Rian Johnson. KNIVES OUT was a “Special Screening” at the 2019 Fantastic Fest, attended by the director and his personal muse, Noah Segan. Segan is an actor you may recognize as he shows up in small roles in tons of films but is most known for his work with Rian Johnson who cast Segan in his knockout directorial debut BRICK in 2005 - a neo-noir detective thriller set in a high school and led by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Johnson and Segan struck up a friendship and Johnson’s been casting him ever since, appearing in THE BROTHERS BLOOM and LOOPER; even sneaking him into an episode of BREAKING BAD and casting him in THE LAST JEDI as X-Wing pilot Stomeroni Starck. What I’m getting at is that everything Rian Johnson and Noah Segan touch is gold and they team up again with KNIVES OUT. What more do you need to know? KNIVES OUT stars Daniel Craig going all-in with a deep southern accent as private detective Benoit Blanc, brought in by local police after the suspicious death of Harlan Thrombey, the patriarch of family made wealthy by his prolific career as a mystery novelist. With a vast fortune at stake, everyone is a suspect. Eldest daughter Linda (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) is the most successful of Harlan’s offspring, running her own real estate empire. Her son Ransom (an out-from-the-shadow-of-Captain-America Chris Evans) is a playboy, drifting in and out of the family when his coffers need replenishing. Harlan’s son Walt (played by Michael Shannon) runs his dad’s publishing company in a clear case of nepotism as the empire still manages to grow despite his mismanagement. Toni Collette portrays Joni, widow of Harlan’s deceased son, a lifestyle guru who depends on family money to maintain her own posh lifestyle. And serving as the film’s emotional core and audience surrogate is Harlan’s nurse Marta (played by Ana de Armas) who has the peculiar quirk of vomiting whenever she lies, a trait used to comedic and plot-driving effect. Is that all the characters? No, not even half, but that’s enough to get you started. KNIVES OUT is a modern update on the classic Agatha Christie whodunnit. Kenneth Brannagh dusted off the genre in 2017 with Christie’s MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS in a pleasant, by-the-numbers take on the story that failed to bowl over the critics or provide much of an update on the dated source material. (That said, I will be there opening weekend for his sequel DEATH ON THE NILE next October.) With KNIVES OUT, we essentially get the Roy family from HBO’s SUCCESSION, toned down a bit from the farcical levels of that show, bumping heads as they search for the truth about Harland’s death and, far more importantly, his last will and testament. The best and worst aspects of the film are tied in closely together. The cast is sensational with a bevy of talent fully unshackled to bring maximum energy to these theatrical characters. Everyone gets a few killer lines, though Rian Johnson does save some of the finer repartee for his buddy Noah Segan as Trooper Wagner. Strangely, one of my favorites Lakeith Stanfield feels totally underutilized as Wagner’s superior. The script carries out a complex and shifting mystery laden with non-stop dialogue such that you may want to lay off the soda - because there’s no bathroom break built into these fast 130 minutes. All told, the only place the film stumbles is that it may try to do a little too much. It is so relentless with its pacing and the complex interrelationships of the family, that it can be a challenge to follow. I had not only mentally prepared myself for a dense film, but I was also taking notes throughout the movie like I was auditing an anthropology class. And there were still several moments of confusion where I felt as if I had completely lost the plot. The film may end up being a little overconfident for holiday audiences and may come off just as smug as many of the characters. Still, I kinda loved it. What makes KNIVES OUT fantastic?Rian Johnson has written and directed five films and not only are they all immensely entertaining, but he’s proven himself a more than capable filmmaker in any genre. This a wild ride that you can watch with the whole family. There’s really not much objectionable for kids under 13, they just may have a tough time comprehending it. Fair warning, this movie will continue to stoke all of your Thanksgiving table political arguments as it goes right after the wealthy and immigration policy. KNIVES OUT is a showcase for some of today’s finest actors making the most of an intelligent script replete with razor-sharp wit and humor. Fans of comedic or light-hearted mysteries featuring ensemble casts such as the aforementioned MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, CLUE, or the 1976 film MURDER BY DEATH will enjoy this film. Rotten Tomatoes: 97% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 84 (MUST SEE) One Movie Punch: 9.2/10 KNIVES OUT (2019) is rated PG-13 and opens wide on Wednesday, November 27th. Come back on Friday and we’ll dip our toe into THE POOL, which I promise is the perfect blackly comic survival film to get your heart-pounding and burn off those Thanksgiving calories. It’s a guy. Trapped in an empty pool with 20-foot walls. There’s a crocodile. There’s lots of rain. There’s a shaggy dog. And there’s Pizza Hut. This film is absolutely bonkers. I’ll see you then.

I’ve got a bonus episode here for you and it’s all about THE OSCARS! Who won?Who deserved to win?Which nominees are worth watching? Of course I don’t know the answers to any of these questions because out of the big categories (actor/actress/director/picture) of the winners I saw a grand total of ZERO. I can tell you all about A Star is Born, Black Panther, and Mary Poppins Returns. I didn’t even know there was a movie called The Wife. (I'm sorry Glen Close!) But I do have friends who are more refined than I am and Todd is here to tell you what to see and what to skip. I’ll tell you who wore it best. Look no further than Captain America Chris Evans. Even though his tux was turquoise velvet, I’ll allow it Because it matched his eyes perfectly. That's talent.

The non-Marvel fans will call Avengers: Infinity War bloated. They will say there are to0 many characters or that it is an assault of the senses. The true "film critics" will see it as little more than a popcorn flick. That's okay. It's not for them. Avengers: Infinity War, the 18th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is for fans. It's made for the fans that will immediately recognize that Red Skull is the villain from Captain America: The First Avenger. It's for the fans who remember that epic fight between the Hulk and the Hulkbuster armor in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It's for every fan who went to the midnight showing and stayed after the credits before it was cool. MINOR SPOILERS BELOW Everything about Avengers: Infinity War is a "Thank You" note to the fans who made the Marvel Cinematic Universe one of the most successful franchises of all time. Infinity War is officially Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Marvel fans will clearly see the influence of Black Panther director Ryan Coogler when the team heads to Wakanda for the final battle. Whether it's the Guardians of The Galaxy or Thor, all of the characters are exactly what a Marvel fan would expect. And that is what makes it glorious. Marvel's 10-Year Adventure to Infinity War When Marvel started its Cinematic Universe on May 2, 2008 with Iron Man, who knew we'd eventually have 18 films that span across 10 years. Even Kevin Feige didn't expect it. Though Infinity War is only the first part of the conclusion, it is a fitting start. Marvel is bidding adeiu to all of the heroes that made the MCU what it is. Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) are all facing annihilation from Thanos (Josh Brolin) in the movies and ending contracts in the real world. Now it's time to say goodbye. And, since it is the end for them, Marvel is going to make it an amazing goodbye. MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW Case in point: the death of Spider-man. As spider-man (Tom Holland) evaporates to dust in the arms Tony Stark, you can't help but think of the symbolism behind it. The Avenger who is destined to start phase 4 of Marvel's master plan dies in the arms of the one who started the first phase. Conventional wisdom would say that the opposite should happen. But Marvel didn't get anywhere by doing what people expect. Instead, the Russo brother's and Marvel choose to tell a good story, and that's exactly what Infinity War is. I don't know a single commentator who expected Thanos to get his wish to gain all Infinity Stones and annihilate half of the universe in the first film. Marvel took what could have been a simple "Thanos only needs one more infinity stone" storyline and they turned it on its head. By giving Thanos everything he wants, the Russo brother's continued the one thing that has made The MCU so dominant. They made a movie that stands completely on its own and yet, fits perfectly into a larger universe. That is what made the MCU so successful and that is what will carry it to a new generation of fans. Where Do We Go From Here? Here's what we know: Thanos has all of the stones and appears to be invincible. Half of the Avengers are dead, despite those real-world contracts. For those who doubt those deaths, remember that several Marvel characters are replaced in the comics. For example, Miles Morales eventually takes up the mantle as Spider-Man. There is nothing stopping Marvel from taking that same path, including a studio-friendly contract. In addition, we know that Marvel will give us one more chapter of Ant-Man in July and introduce us to Captain Marvel in 2019. We also know that Captain Marvel must be incredibly powerful since Nick Fury calls on her in the post-credits scene. My personal theory is that the Soul Stone will be the key to the next film. Red Skull appearing wasn't just an accident and Dr. Strange knew that the only way to defeat Thanos was to give him the time stone. Dr. Strange's meditation into the future may be the only advantage that the Avengers have. Of course, I'm sure our heroes will eventually come out on top, but Marvel could surprise me. Thanos could be the invisible force in the sky moving forward and that's fine by my. After 10 years, I'm just happy to still be on the ride.
Captain America (Chris Evans) says "peace out". A toddler and a shredder: what could go wrong? Positive Pants features a bunny helping a kitty that will instill feels. Savannah saw A Star Is Born, cried, and then cried harder at the movie service desk. Gender Wars. The President's toilet paper is not missing!
Get dirty with guest Yael Tygiel as she joins the boys for this episode! Will a fight for the throne erupt in a romance between Loki and the Mother of Dragons? And how dirty does it get when Chris Evans' Captain America meets Chris Evans' Johnny Storm (SO MANY ABS). Then we're matchmaking the Victorian Sontaran Strax (Doctor Who)!
Join us in part 2 of our 74th episode as we explore the lives or deaths of some freshly infinity gauntlet fisted heroes in Avengers: Infinity Wars. We give a detailed look at how Tony Stark(Robert Downy Jr.) comes up with new beard patterns using advanced algorithms and how to profit from damage control of his premonition of Thanos played by the tombstone mustache Josh Brolin fisting half the world and abducting everyone’s daughter in the process .Although we don’t know how people have kids in the MCU when it seems the heroes that like each other are either not sure of having sex each other or physically can’t have sex with each other. Whether it’s because they have a giant hulk member, your a living AI, saving your virginity, or you just have low T. We can assume other than Stan Lee, no other old man in Marvel is getting much action in the MCU. As pepper annoys the crap out of him and he’s telling her that he added nanno technology to his pathetic sperm and he still doesn’t want to have a kid with her, it merely grosses him out in his dreams turning them to nightmares at the though of her pregnant. We also tap in to his weird relationship with spider-man as a giant sub plot to plow his Aunt. Speaking of Spider-Man (Tom Holland), he once again gets pulled away from his Filipino high school to deal with some Russo Brothers marinara swirling italian greasy shaky cam in his route to becoming an avenchi de italiano. Meanwhile Bruce Banner(Mark Ruffalo) has the type of Hulk constipation that only Wong’s type of food can release. Once again Dr. Strange(Benedict Cumberbatch) has his dong on Wong’s wong and just like the bored and boring hologramic sorcerer magicians they are , their argument is over who can be more petty over money. Black Panther(Chadwick Boseman) uses the nanite technology to show his junk off to the other hero’s while still looking like a grown man in a cat suit. Captain America(Chris Evans) is still the greatest man alive, and makes us all proud to be Americans. All this and more slightly sexual unnecessary overtones are used to try and defeat the creepy uncle Thanos and stop infinity glove from fisting each and every one of them to paper machete. Can you turn a dwarf into a giant dwarf and he’ll still be equally handicapped? Turns out you can. Thor is trying to piece his life together after he realizes his white trash father consisting of an oppressive father, forgetful mother, genderless brother (Loki), and heroine selling black british friend are dead. Quill is realizing he is a still a fat white man with no self-esteem no matter how many home gym systems and ket diets he uses. Oh yeah and guardians of the galaxy are in it. All this and more in our ridiculously detailed breakdown. Go back and listen to our Part 1 episode which includes our conclusion to the XXXtentacion legacy, as well as our breakdown of Black Panther(Ep.73). Our completed series Macaulay Culkin Home Alone (Ep. 71 and 72). Planet of the Apes (Ep. 63-66), Transformers (Ep. 57-61), Pirates of the Caribbean (Ep. 52-56), Fast and the Furious (Ep. 44-51), X-Men (Ep. 33-43), Star Wars (Ep. 24-31, 70), Harry Potter (Ep. 15-23), and MCU (Ep. 1-14 and 62, 67,68,73). Hit us up on facebook and twitter with how you feel about Avengers: Infinity Wars or if Stan Lee also personally convinced you that you would still be interested in Marvel 19 movies later.
