Have you ever seen a Crested Caracara? This Texas native bird is a species of falcon, although it is sometimes compared to the eagle. It can be found across South Texas, Mexico and all the way down to South America. Learn what makes this animal unique—like its preference for walking, rather than flying—and how it has impacted cultures over the years. Plus, Abbey and Daemon share about their Caracara encounters.
Striated Caracara are one of the most interesting and charismatic species of birds of prey in the world. They are also considered some of the smartest birds of prey, often being thought of more like a raven or crow than as a falcon. Striated Caracaras have historically been dubbed ‘flying monkeys' and ‘flying devils' thanks to their inquisitive and somewhat heavy handed (or should that be taloned?) approach to life. Join Tom as he chats to Katie Harrington, a research biologist who has worked hard to understand the movements and behaviour of populations of Striated Caracaras on the Falklands – even inventing puzzles for them to solve! We also challenge Sirius, one of the resident Striated Caracaras at the Trust, to solve a puzzle he's never seen before.
We were so lucky to get to sit down with No Earbuds founder, Jamie Coletta. If you're unfamiliar with Jamie/No Earbuds, (impossible if you listen to our show), they're a wholly unique marketing/publicity/management/A&R/PR company and probably responsible, in one way or another, for introducing you to half of your favorite bands. They're one of those people who you can tell just absolutely loves music and helping spread the word on the bands and artists they love. Definitely a kindred spirit with the Left of the Dial crew. Jamie talks about John-Allison Weiss getting to make their new album the way they wanted, listening to The Wonder Years new masterpiece The Hum Goes on Forever in the studio with the band, what it means to sound like you're from Wilkes-Barre, and so much more! And hey, it's Bandcamp Friday. Why not pick up the songs you hear in today's episode and show these bands you love them! Check out https://www.noearbuds.com/ (No Earbuds). This episode will discuss the planning, logistics, and travel to the Galapagos Islands, the proper selection, use, and considerations of using a tripod, and five tips for beginning bird photographers. It offers up close and personal wildlife, dramatic island landscape and even underwater photography while snorkeling! I just finished my fourth workshop and first as the solo leader; but Kevin Loughlin, owner of Wildside Nature Tours, has been 41 times! To say Wildside reigns supreme as the Galapagos Photography Workshop is an understatement! If you are going to go to the Galapagos, what should you know about planning a photography trip? Do you go solo or do a live aboard? What will you miss if you go solo? How do you make sure you choose a great company for a photography workshop to this amazing destination? Find out what a "generic" Galapagos trip will leave you sadly disappointed as a photographer. Tripods are a critical piece of photographic gear and as such, I am often left wondering why such a huge percentage of photographers put so little thought into their purchase and use. In this episode, we will navigate the waters of camera support and give you some knowledge on how to best purchase and use a tripod. [caption id="attachment_5045" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Tripods[/caption] Finally, we give beginning bird photographers five tips on how to capture better bird images. 'New Preoccupations' is out now on Memory Music Records and is available everywhere you get music.
Destroyer is a band that has been around for so many years, they seems to exist in their own realm. This week on Indiecast, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen dig into Destroyer's new album Labyrinthitis (33:23) and wonder if the band is now immune to criticism from music reviewers. Oso Oso, on the other hand, is being picked up by music outlets. It seems as though their surprise-released album Sore Thumb (42:06) is finally putting them on the indie music map. This week also had some big news in indie music: Will Butler announced he has officially left Arcade Fire (:27). Indiecast talks about Butler's decision and discusses Arcade Fire's new music (3:24). Steven and Ian also walk through Lollapalooza's 2022 lineup (14:22), which was just unveiled this week and includes the apparently controversial headliner Metallica. In this week's Recommendation Corner (53:36), Ian's highlights several bands including Caracara, Soul Glo, Proper., and Carly Cosgrove. After the pandemic threw off touring plans for a few years, many big indie bands are making a 2022 comeback with double albums. Big Thief just delivered their 20-track LP and Kurt Vile recently announced a 90-minute magnum opus. But is Beach House's latest project Once Twice Melody effective as a double album? On this week's Indiecast, Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen talk Beach House's new album (40:57); reminisce on their most vivid festival memories (12:05); and decide it's not too early to argue about The 1975 (6:15).Along with diving into Beach House's Once Twice Melody, Indiecast walks listeners through recently announced weekend-long festival lineups, which thankfully still exist two years into the pandemic. Hangout Fest 2022 hit the mark with Tame Impala, Megan Thee Stallion, Jack Harlow, and Phoebe Bridgers. Beale Street Music Festival took a more eclectic approach by booking a mix bag of performers like Foo Fighters, Lil Wayne, Smashing Pumpkins, Three 6 Mafia, DaBaby, and Modest Mouse (20:30).In this week's Recommendation Corner (52:44), Ian shouts out Pittsburgh band String Machine, whose album Hallelujah Hell Yeah is set to release next week. Steven hypes up Philly four-piece Caracara, an emo band with '90s alt-rock influences who are opening for String Machine on tour later this year.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Charles Darwin described caracaras as "false eagles," but Jonathan Meiburg thinks the bird of prey has been unfairly maligned for centuries. In a conversation with Matt Galloway in June, he discusses what he's learned from studying the birds in Central and South America, and his new book, A Most Remarkable Creature: The Hidden Life and Epic Journey of The World's Smartest Birds of Prey.

This episode I have two guests: Bob and Prudy Bowers. They tell us about their differing paths into birding, share about the Cactus Wren & Crested Caracara while going off on a few tangents identifying some vocal birds that visit us during the podcast.
Off the southern tip of South America, the remote and rocky Falkland Islands are home to one of the oddest birds of prey in the world: the striated caracara, which looks like a falcon but acts more like parrot. Charles Darwin had to fend these birds off the hats, compasses, and valuables of the Beagle; the Falkland Islands government had a bounty on their “cheeky” beaks for much of the 20th century; and modern falconers have used their understanding of language to train them to do dog-like tricks. The other nine species of caracara that span the rest of South America are just as odd in their own ways. In his new book, A Most Remarkable Creature, Jonathan Meiburg follows their unusual evolutionary path across the continent and describes his encounters with these birds over the past 25 years. He joins us from his home in Texas to introduce us to some new feathered friends.Go beyond the episode:Jonathan Meiburg’s A Most Remarkable CreatureRead an excerpt about Charles Darwin’s encounters with the birdMeet Tina, the striated caracara who can “find Nemo,” and a crested caracara named KevinHere’s some footage of a flock on Saunders Island in the FalklandsTune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. BROWNSVILLE, Texas - A groundbreaking was held recently for the Battlefield Trail Extension, which adds 1.8 miles to City of Brownsville’s Historic Battlefield Trail.Among those attending the ceremony were representatives from, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, the City of Brownsville, the National Park Service, the UT School of Public Health, the City Harlingen, the City of Port Isabel, the City of South Padre Island, the City of Los Fresnos, the City of San Benito and the Town of Rancho Viejo. It is the first phase in a plan to connect Brownsville with Los Fresnos by trail and is a project intended to increase access to public lands in the region. The extension to the trail ties in with Challenge-RGV, a county-wide effort to inspire healthy eating and active living among residents. The Battlefield Trail Extension was funded with a $2 million grant from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation (Legacy Foundation) to jumpstart Cameron County’s efforts to create new opportunities for physical activity and active transportation in a part of the country facing significant rates of chronic disease and poverty. It is the first of six Caracara Trails catalyst projects that are intended to accelerate development of the 428-mile trail network, which is poised to deliver significant health and economic benefits to the region. For example, the development of the trail network is expected to generate a 22 percent increase in physical activity to Cameron County residents and an annual health care cost savings of as much as $12.3 million. Construction of the trail network alone is expected to deliver a total economic impact of more than $173 million.“As we break ground on the Battlefield Trail Extension, we’re marking a turning point for the health, wellness and economic potential of our region,” said Rose M.Z. Gowen, M.D., Brownsville city commissioner and a board member of RTC. “The Caracara Trails vision is already bringing new investment to Cameron County in the form of federal and private grants. Already, you can see families and friends out on the trails, having fun while building new routines in their lives around physical activity.”Soon, Gowen said, a trail will connect Brownsville to Los Fresnos, with the new extension part of the project.“Our trail network vision and all that it can deliver for the health and economic growth of our region is being realized with each investment, each mile of trail built and each person who gets out for a walk, a run or a ride.”The above podcast features all the speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony.
Larue the crested caracara has taught us a lot of things, we wanted to zoom in the focus on three things here that are not only common issues as trainers, but are relatable no matter if you are working with a caracara, a hornbill, or a companion parrot. Caracaras are intelligent like parrots and corvids, social, enjoy walks like hornbills, vultures, and other species, and ride around on the glove like raptors, although Larue doesn't have traditional falconry equipment like anklets and jesses. In this episode, we discuss how 1) as a team, we worked through his wing bandaging maintaining a positive relationship 2) we give him tools to work through his fearful behavior 3) we use alternative motivational techniques so that we aren't relying on a heavy weight management practices. https://avianbehaviorlab.com/podcast/03-avian-teachers-larue-the-crested-caracara-and-fearful-behavior/
Caracara is a vulnerable indie punk band who write intensely felt, thunderous rock tunes with careening, distorted guitar work and massive builds. They're best witnessed live where their volatile stage presence puts power behind raw, emotional lyricism. Check out the rad performance by Caracara live at Audiotree.
