Malaysia is home to ten hornbill species, who play vital roles in preserving the delicate balance of our natural ecosystems. But these beautiful and iconic birds face threats such as habitat loss, poaching, and also suffer from the effects of climate change. We explore how conservation efforts - driven by science and community involvement - are giving hornbills a fighting chance in Malaysia's rainforests. Joining us are wildlife researcher Dr. Ravinder Kaur (Wildlife Researcher, CoFounder, xploregaia, Scientific Director, GAIA and a lecturer at Sunway University) and Dr. Hjh Yatela Zainal Abidin (CEO, Sime Darby Foundation) to share insights into the challenges and triumphs of conserving these magnificent creatures, the vital role hornbills play in the ecosystem, and the groundbreaking efforts being made to protect their habitats. We also discuss the inaugural National Hornbill Day, which is set to be celebrated on the 10th of November 2024.Image credit: ShutterstockSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

An unidentified Conservative MP has been accused of rape by several women. These allegations are mentioned in a new book by former cabinet secretary Nadine Dorries. It comes after reports the Conservative party's former chairman, Sir Jake Berry, wrote to the police to make them aware of the claims after leaving the post last year. The deputy Prime Minister, Oliver Dowden, has denied a cover-up by the party when he was the chairman. Emma Barnett hears the reaction of Isabel Hardman, Assistant Editor at The Spectator, and Conservative MP Caroline Nokes, Chair of the Women and Equalities Committee. A group of mothers under the umbrella of Just Stop Oil are planning a slow march to demand an end to new oil and gas licences and to call for a secure liveable future for their children. Just Stop Oil's tactics around the country, from blocking roads to halting theatre productions, are controversial. Emma is joined by two of the protesting mums. When con woman Melissa Caddick vanished from her luxurious eastern Sydney home in November 2020 - with only her partially decomposed foot found washed up on a beach months later, it set off a frenzy in Australia. Regulators suspect the 49-year-old stole nearly £16m from more than 60 clients, including many of her family and friends, to help fund a lavish lifestyle. Chief investigative reporter at the Sydney Morning Herald, Kate McClymont, joins Emma to discuss. We hear about a development in the case of Agnes Wanjiru, a 21-year-old Kenyan woman who was found stabbed to death at a hotel in the garrison town of Nanyuki in 2012. Witnesses said she was last seen leaving the hotel bar with a British soldier, and her body was found in a septic tank at the hotel nearly three months later. A Kenyan judge concluded after an inquest in 2019 that she had been murdered by one or two British soldiers. As yet, nobody has been convicted. Kenyan police have now flown to the UK to question British soldiers and officers about the case. Emma speaks to Sunday Times journalist Hannah Al-Othman. Sarah Whalley is the producer and director of Forests, an episode of Planet Earth III. She was pregnant during filming and chose to name her child Forest. Sarah talks to Emma about how the isolation of her pregnancy during lockdown was mirrored when they filmed a Hornbill bird in its nest for the first time.

“One ironic anxiety of travel is that suddenly you're living in 'organic time' and you're not used to it.” –Rolf Potts In this "vagabonding audio companion" episode of Deviate, remixed from Aaron Millar's Armchair Explorer podcast, Rolf talks about his earliest travel dreams, and what compelled him to finally take a vagabonding dream trip around North America by van in his early twenties (2:00); how travel expectations and planning are often at odds with the joy of what happens spontaneously on the road (8:30); the delightful surprises Rolf found on a recent trip to Sumatra and the Mentawai Islands (11:30); Rolf's experiences in Myanmar, and the importance of seeing time, rather than possessions, as our most important form of wealth in life (22:00); Rolf's early experiences in Southeast Asia, and his monthlong boat journey down the Mekong River (31:00); and how, at its best, travel teaches us to pay attention to life itself (35:00). Today's episode is number 68. It's all about the family of birds called Bucerotidae. These are the hornbills.Maybe you've heard about hornbills and know a few facts about them. Or maybe you've never even heard about these birds. Either way, I think you'll enjoy today's podcast episode. Hornbills are just so cool! The family Bucerotidae includes several dozen hornbill species. But there's a second, much smaller avian family that contains birds we also call hornbills. The name of that family is Bucorvidae, the ‘ground-hornbills.' There are only 2 species of ground-hornbills. I'll be including them in our conversation today too. Besides, until recently, scientists grouped ground-hornbills into the larger Bucerotidae family. Hornbill are key players in the tropical ecosystems of both Africa and Asia. There are many fascinating things for us to learn about them. The Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill, whic is endemic to the dry savannas of Southern Africa, was last evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature or IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as of Least Concern. This despite the fact that the population appears to be decreasing. But a recent study at the University of Cape Town into the effect of climate change on their breeding success in the Kalahari Desert found that they could be wiped out by 2027. In this week's edition of Being Green, Glynis Crook speaks to Nicholas Pattinson, one of the researchers at UCT's FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology.

No, the Southern Ground Hornbill wouldn't win the parent-of-the-year award. Fortunately we have God as our Father who cares deeply about every single one of His children.
This week's podcast introduces an amazing bird from Asia, the Great Hornbill. These creatures are members of a large family of unique looking birds due to the large casques atop their heads. The Great Hornbill ranges from India to the Philippines and is on a trajectory towards extinction. What makes hornbills especially unique are their nesting behaviors, which are almost too radical to be believed. This week we also welcome a special guest who had the pleasure of working with hornbills and he gives us some insight into their behaviors. Due to the destruction of their habitat and for the fact they are often hunted for their casques and feathers, the Great Hornbill is in trouble. These are big and beautiful birds that need our help, and are well worth learning about. For one cup of "good" coffee a month you can support your favorite podcast on Patreon and give back to conservation. With your support we were able to donate to the Coral Reef Foundation, Red Panda Network, helped provide chum ($$) for OCEARCH, funding to train rangers in Africa with Global Conservation Force and so much more. Chapter 41 of the Ch'u Ta-Kao translation of the Tao Te Ching. 10 minute guided meditation followed by discussion. Chapter 41 is a beautiful passage and one of the ones that originally attracted me to the Tao Te Ching, primarily because it puzzled me. When I was young it seemed both to not make sense and simultaneously to speak to something deep within me. In the course of exploring the chapter, I ask the question, If all paths are part of the Tao, then why make an effort to follow the Tao? We finish with a short gratitude practice. * * * 41. When the superiour scholar is told of Tao, He works hard to practise it. When the middling scholar is told of Tao, It seems that sometimes he keeps it and sometimes he loses it. When the inferiour scholar is told of Tao, He laughs aloud at it. If it were not laughed at, it would not be sufficient to be Tao. Therefore the proverb says: 'Tao in enlightenment seems obscure; Tao in progress seems regressive; The highest virtue seems like a valley; The purest white seems discoloured; The most magnificent virtue seems insufficient; The solidest virtue seems frail; The simplest nature seems changable; The greatest square has no angles; The largest vessel is never complete; The loudest sound can never be heard; The biggest form cannot be visualised. Tao, while hidden, is nameless.' Yet it is Tao alone that is good at imparting and completing. This week, The Musafir Stories speaks to Aakash Mehrotra from the blog Hand of Colors. Today's destination: Nagaland Nearest domestic airport: Dimapur Airport (DMU) Nearest Railway Station is Dimapur (DMV) Prerequisities - Inner line permit, see links section below Packing - warm clothes, gloves Time of the year - December as you get to see the Hornbill festival. Preferable to do a festival calendar check before you plan. Length of the itinerary: 10 days Itinerary Highlights: Aakash speaks about his experience covering the Hornbill festival which takes place in Kisama, which is about 15kms from the capital Kohima. Bus services are available The Hornbill festival is a celebration held every year from 1st - 10th December, in Nagaland. It is also refered to as the festival of festivals as different Naga tribes come together and showcase their cultural heritage through this festival. One can see the display of different Naga cultures, their food, their traditional attire, dance forms, fight forms and much more. Along with these there is a variety of competitions right from food, to music to literary events. If you are brave enough you can also participate in the chilli eating competition and get a flavor of the bhut jolokia or ghost pepper, one of the hottest chillis in India. In terms of lodging Kisama has some decent homestays where you can lodge during the festival, but they are very limited in number. - Another option is to stay in Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, which is just 12kms from Kisama while you are at the festival. For other smaller villages, it is better to work with a local travel agent to arrange accommodation. By choosing to stay in Kohima, you can also experience the beautiful night markets during the festival as well as a flavor of local food, music and shopping. For transportation, public transport like buses and shared taxis are available but frequency is limited. Cabs are your best bet to get about the city/towns. Aakash also speaks about his next pit stop, Khanoma, which is one of few green villages in Nagaland ie a village which is completely self sustainable and has given up hunting in order to avoid any imbalances in the natural topography Aakash then travels to Mon - the final frontier of India. He shares his experiences in the village of Longwa, which is one of the final villages in Mon before the Myanmar border. Longwa is a village of of the head-hunters, warriors and tribes infamous for cutting off the head of their opponents in war. An amazing story with the cheiftain of the Longwa village ensues (spoiler alert! There is opium and Assam rifles in the story too!) From Longwa, Aakash makes a pit stop at Chuchuyimlang - a village in Mokokchung District which has been converted to a heritage village by the Nagaland Tourism board. As far as food is concerned, most of the Naga cuisine is water based, low or no oil base. Food is mostly boiled and not fried and organic. Sweet potatoes and rice beer are the popular choices among tourists as well. Listen to some amazing stories of experiences with the locals! From drinking rice beer to how the Nagas fooled the British into believing they had guns during the Naga wars!
