Anne is also the author of the forthcoming book “The Body Joyful - My journey from self-loathing to self-acceptance” available October 5, 2021.  In this powerful conversation, Anne and I talked about:  How important it is to have another option on the table around how to be in relation with food and your body.  Grieving a body size you lived in in the past so you can move forward.  The importance of self-talk, how to recognize the different voices you have in your mind and how to create a more compassionate narrative.  How diet culture lures us into feeling safe by dieting, but only creates false safety when we compare and judge our bodies.  One of the challenges of starting an intuitive eating journey is the fear of the unknown.  Why community is so important in the work of intuitive eating.  You can learn more about Anne at https://shapingperspectives.com Pre-order Anne's book here- https://shapingperspectives.com/the-body-joyful/ Join Anne's Private Facebook community- Body Joyful Revolution here- https://www.facebook.com/groups/bodyjoyfulrevolution  Connect with Anne on Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/shapingperspectives

Episode 54: The Secret of Intuitive Eating for Athletes | Ditching Diet Culture and Improve Performance!

One Small Bite

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 14, 2020 48:37

In this episode we’ll go through what Intuitive Eating (IE) is and we’ll unpack how it can be used in conjunction with training to optimize performance. I bring TD Wellness Teammate and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Kia Bourne on the show. She is going to tell us about how IE can enhance your performance during your training, and after you’ve retired. We’ll meet an athlete who was down, struggling with her body image, and viewing her sport as a chore until she discovered Intuitive Eating. She was able to improve her performance while falling in love with her body and sport again. Imagine a world where being healthy is not correlated with being skinny or any kind of body image. Where working out is not just a means to burn calories or to get a slimmer waist and bigger butt. Imagine being taught as a young (and older) athlete that exercising can build strength and confidence; that nutrition can be sustainable, supportive, and fulfilling. Diet culture has taken this away from many of us and is something we struggle with, but good news is we don’t have to. Intermittent Fasting, Keto, Weight Watchers, Flexitarian, Vegetarian, Jenny Craig, South Beach, Beach Body, Shakeology, Anti-Inflammatory… the list goes on. Diet culture is everywhere we look and spread over every media platform. It’s with the friends and teammates we talk to and even our coaches and trainers. Are you tired of trying to find ways to shift and shape your body in order to look a certain way or to change in hopes of being better in your sport? So, how does it work? The 3 Pillars to Optimized Performance for Athletes TrainingMindfulnessNutritionThere is a lot of noise when it comes to sports and nutrition. What a beautiful human to share with you today. Paige Schmidt is a Certified Intuitive Eating & Financial Coach who helps women enjoy a healthier relationship with food & money. Paige has an amazing relationship with food, her body, fitness, and herself. She describes it as calm, happy, and fun. But, my good lassie, it wasn’t always like this. For YEARS she was caught up in dieting- counting and measuring everything that went into her mouth and thinking about it constantly. She received a ton of praise for her weight loss at a young age and it led her to associate her worth and value as a woman with her thinness (and a lot of fear around food and gaining weight) When she found true connection through her church and experienced the fullness that her faith gave her, the consuming dieting thoughts and behaviors began to fall to the background. I'll let her tell you all about the ups and downs of the journey in the epi. Paige shares mad wisdom in this one. Prepared to be uplifted and inspired! We get it - diet culture sucks! It has created a hostile environment where fat phobia is stigmatized and thin privilege reigns supreme. This results in an overall dysfunctional relationship with food and it's no surprise society has now come to reject the 36"-24"-36" measurements of "beauty". Intuitive Eating (IE) rejects diet culture and promotes the love of self, and the love of all foods. While it is true we should respect our bodies and honor our health, social media has painted only a small fragment of what IE really is. Spoiler alert: it's not all about having a second helping of apple pie or eating a cake for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. IE is a DEEP framework based on ten guiding principles that can be applied for someone who has diabetes, high cholesterol, and other metabolic diseases. In today's episode we have Ayana Habtemariam MSW, RDN, LD who is a Certified Intuitive Eating counselor here to answer all our burning questions about the truth behind IE. This week on the Speaking of Hungry podcast I speak with Michelle Vino-Baltsas, a Certified Intuitive Eating and Body Confidence Coach, who's been coaching women internationally for over six years. She specializes in helping women deal with body changes in midlife.  It’s hard enough for us to feel good about our bodies when we’re up against diet culture and unrealistic thin ideals. Michelle recognizes that when you throw in the natural process of aging, pre-menopause, and menopause, the struggle deepens.  In this episode, we talk about Michelle’s relationship with food and how it’s changed as she’s grown personally and professionally.  We discuss:  Embracing the fact that we age.  Dealing with body changes that women face through aging.  Coping with weight gain that may occur once we give up dieting without going on another diet or “lifestyle change”. Dieting causes weight gain in the long run by messing with metabolism and throwing us into a restrict-binge cycle.  Helpful tips on handling the holidays that have nothing to do with keeping your weight down or restricting delicious holiday foods.  Michelle is passionate about supporting women who wish to feel good in their bodies and practice more health-promoting behaviors without dieting or restrictive eating. Since midlife is such a major life transition for women, she helps them to navigate this phase with more ease and confidence so they can renew their purpose and identity apart from their changing bodies. Michelle lives in upstate NY with her family and she provides virtual coaching, online learning, and group coaching.  Mentioned in this episode:  Michelle’s website Michelle on Instagram Michelle on Facebook No-Diet Sisterhood Facebook Group Contact Michelle: contact@michellevinabaltsas.com Intuitive Eating Workbook Daily Om - Emotional Freedom From Food course Megrette Fletcher - nonjudgemental weight-neutral approach to diabetes education Health at Every Size (HAES) Linda Bacon, PhD Alison Barkman's scholarship opportunity ------------------------ If you are enjoying my podcast, please go to iTunes and leave a 5-star rating and review!!
