We want Nurses, everyone, to feel like they are in the state of well being.  We know that well being is really static. It's like in the present moment, I'm feeling well, whereas really, self development is about well becoming, because it's a much longer journey of... and never ending, a never ending journey of well becoming, right? That always has to be a major part of who we are and what we do, because without that experience and being able to develop ourselves, we can't sit with the suffering of others and do a meaningful job with them, or take on the suffering ourselves, or, you know, all of those pieces." ~Karen Avino EdD, RN, AHN-BC, HWNC-BCAh-Ha MomentsInnovative Specialty Courses for NursesUpdate on Nurse Coaching CPT CodesRevamping the online curriculum of the Integrative Nurse Coach Certificate Program (INCCP)Renewing Alumni Connection ProgramCelebrating the success of the Integrative Nurse Coach Symposium in FloridaExcitement about the Holistic Holiday at Sea+ MORE!Links and ResourcesIntegrative Nurse Coaches in ACTION! podcastEp25: It's Time to Re-Energize Nurses!- Karen AvinoEp72: Inspiring Nurse Voices at the 2024 INCA Symposium!Ep73: More Inspiring Nurse Voices from the 2024 INCA Symposium!Holistic Holiday at SeaINCA's Specialty Course PageKaren's email Integrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integrative Nurse Coach FoundationWe provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting. "In the Nurse coaching certificate course, we definitely learned about mindfulness. And you know, that sounds maybe trivial to somebody who's not familiar with Nurse coaching. Sure, we know mindfulness is research fact and very effective, but it just goes so much deeper than that. You know, we don't often as Nurses, allow ourselves enough time, time with our patients, time with ourselves, time to breathe, time to drink water, to take a rest, so allowing time and space to transpire, to let our bodies catch up with ourselves, to really hear what our patients are saying, you know, or what they're not saying.Time is... I really think mindfulness and time are so connected that we can be mindful, intentionally mindful, if we allow ourselves more time. So that is a big one. You know, I think that's a big one in this busy healthcare space, allowing more time or creating a way to allow for more of that." ~Maggie Gardner RN, BSN, HWNC-BC, CH-CAh Ha MomentsAs Nurses, we can do things to numb our emotional experiences- social media, alcohol, drugs, ignoring the things we experience - this is not serving you, it never has- maybe there is another way...There are so many pathways you can choose to take in your professional and personal life- go in the direction that lights you up- that is the best way to go- even if it's scaryYour sensitive heart is exactly what is needed to shift the way the healthcare system is being run!  You are exactly where you need to be, right now. Danni has been advocating for the injured, aiming to help remove barriers to healthcare and raise awareness that Jersey has had no access to any vaccine damage payment scheme until very recently. Danni is a spiritually awake, vocal and unafraid mother who lost her 65-year-old beloved father suddenly following the Pfizer “vaccine” and is determined to fight for the truth. In the 2nd part of the podcast, Poppy Bazell, a registered nurse for the last 9 years, shares her experiences and insights on speaking out against vaccine mandates and questioning the mainstream COVID narrative Poppy also discusses her real passion for holistic healing. Over the last 2 years, she has been studying hard to create a nursing role that focuses on treating the 'whole' person- mind, body and soul. Poppy combines her skills in counselling, health coaching and reiki energy healing to offer individualised care that seeks to heal rather than cure. I hope you enjoy the episode. How to Take Nurse Coaching Anywhere!- Deborah McElligott, DNP, ANP-BC, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC, CDE Highlights"Coaching adds the component of not knowing.  It was so powerful for me because as an NP, you had to be the expert. You know, as a Nurse, you have to be an expert. You can't give the wrong medication, you'll kill somebody. You have to be perfect. And this not knowing part of coaching, where you can hold the space for your client, your patient, your peer, and help them discover their best way of becoming who they need to be, was really powerful. You know, knowing that you can be an expert, but you can also be a not knowing person at the same time." ~Deborah McElligott, DNP, ANP-BC, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC, CDEAh-Ha MomentsNurse Coaching eliminates labels, and teaches us to hold space, and to ‘not know''You can be an expert and not know at the same timeThe skills of Nurse Coaching become part of how you practice as a Nurse, and you will use these skills every dayIf you are looking for a place to practice Coaching and holistic Nursing look at your system, what are they doing, what are their needs, and how can you help them? You can simplify some holistic modalities to teach them to your system, or in the communityYou can teach many things through the ‘coaching approach', as opposed to the ‘telling approach'You don't have to wait for a position to open up, instead, create it for yourself!Imagery practices can open up so many healing opportunities for yourselfJournal questions… what surprised you today?  What inspired you?  What touched your heart?Links and ResourcesDossey & Keegan's Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice: A Handbook for Practice 8th EditionPodcast 54: How To Integrate Energy With Nurse Coaching- Sandra Rousso, MSN, RN, HWNC-BCDr Barbara DosseyThe Theory of Integral Nursing by Dr Barbara DosseySusan LuckIntegrative Health and Wellness Assessment Analysis of the Theory of Integrative Nurse Coaching articleIntegrative Health and Wellness Assessment Tool articleInstrument Development of Integrative Health and Wellness Assessment™ articleAmerican Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses, Provision 5Health promotion in nurses: is there a healthy nurse in the house? Today, Lauren Hanson, Functional Medicine Holistic RN, joins me on the podcast. She shares her family's incredible story of how they began their holistic journey. After her husband became seriously ill and having no answers after seeing multiple doctors across multiple states, a friend suggested essential oils. Lauren did some research and decided to give it a try and within a week or two her husband began seeing improvements and now, eight years later he is 90% better. Lauren became passionate about helping educate individuals about natural alternatives. Her passion grew into starting her own Functional Medicine Holistic practice. Holistic nursing focuses on looking at the client as a whole, working toward finding root cause, and not just symptom modification.  Lauren has helped children with emotional dysregulation, cancer patients needing extra support, supporting women through menopause, and so much more. She is determined to help you find the answers you need to start moving forward on your journey. Please listen to Lauren's story, be inspired, and head to her website to find out more. I became a registered nurse in 2007 graduating from Evangel University with my Bachelor of Science in Health Care and Cox College of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduation, I went to work in Columbia, MO on the Oncology unit where I also spent time working as a Supportive/Palliative Care RN for Boone Hospital. After 8.5 years, my husband and I, along with our growing family, moved near St. Louis, MO. It was then I decided I wanted to pursue a different type of nursing. While I loved bedside nursing, at the time I still had little ones at home. In 2013, my husband's health started to decline and the traditional western medicine did not provide answers nor solutions. It was then that I started researching about natural solutions and preventative health. Since that time, my curiosity became my passion. In the summer of 2021, I decided to combine my experience, education and passion in holistic nursing. I completed my certification in Holistic Nursing program from Pacific College of Health and Science in the Spring of 2022. In April of 2022, my dreams became reality when I opened my office for Hanson Holistic Health in Cottleville, MO. Healing the whole person is a process, but having someone there to listen, encourage and empower is so needed in healthcare today. I look forward to connecting and encouraging you on your path towards healing.

Save Your Advice and Offer Support Instead Our guest-host, CNN's Alisyn Camerota, is joined by Bethany Johnson and Dr. Margaret M. Quinlan to continue the conversation about why so many moms feel like they're never good enough at home or at work. "The threshold for women to be called a bad parent is far lower than it is for men still, and that's an institutional thing..." Bethany says in this episode. The trio talk about how having a helpful partner can make a big difference when raising kids, but it will never make up for some of the systemic problems that exist, like the lack of good childcare. They also talk about a better way we can support moms and each other on social media that does not involve offering advice. Our guests today co-wrote the book, You're Doing It Wrong! Mothering, Media, and Medical Expertise and share some of the historical underpinnings of why so many mothers struggle with feelings of shame and guilt regarding their kids.  Bethany L. Johnson (MPhil, M.A.) is a doctoral student in the history of science, technology and the environment at the University of South Carolina and a research affiliate faculty in the department of communication studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She studies how science, medical technology, and public health discourses are framed and reproduced by institutions and individuals with structural power from the 19th century to the present; specifically, she studies epidemics and reproductive health. She has published in interdisciplinary journals such as Health Communication, Women & Language, Departures in Critical Qualitative Research, Journal of Holistic Nursing, and Women's Reproductive Health.  Margaret M. Quinlan (Ph.D.) is a Professor of Communication Studies, Director of an Interdisciplinary Minor, Health & Medical Humanities and Core Faculty Member of the Interdisciplinary Health Psychology Ph.D. Program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She examines the nexus of public perceptions of medicine, science, and technology, both historically and presently. She investigates the role communication plays in public understandings of medical expertise, illness, wellness, caring, treatment, health, and healing. Dr. Quinlan has authored approximately 40 journal articles, 17 book chapters and co-produced documentaries in a regional Emmy award-winning series (National Distribution with PBS and available on Amazon). Welcome to The Academic Life! In this episode you'll hear about: Bethany Johnson's simultaneous journey through graduate school and motherhood, her struggles with infertility, the history of birth-care access, why Black women have worse maternal health outcomes, the consequences for pregnant people in a pregnancy-surveillance culture, and a discussion of the book You're Doing it Wrong: Mothering, Media, and Medical Expertise. Today's book is: You're Doing it Wrong: Mothering, Media, and Medical Expertise by Bethany L. Johnson and Margaret M. Quinlan, which explores how new mothers face a barrage of confounding decisions. Whatever they “choose,” experts ranging from health practitioners to social media influencers tell them they're making mistakes. Johnson and Quinlan draw from their own experiences, the history of mothering advice from the newspapers, magazines, doctors' records and personal papers of the nineteenth-century to today's websites and Instagram feeds. Johnson and Quinlan find surprising parallels between today's mothering experts and their Victorian counterparts, and explore how social media pressures pregnant people, even as it offers social support. Most moms have experienced "mom guilt" or "mom shame" at some point in their children's lives. On today's podcast we talk about the very real, historical reasons why this happens, and about the long-running sentiment in the United States that a woman's true job is to be a good mother. And now with the added pressures of measuring up on social media and taking care of your family in a pandemic, it's no wonder so many moms feel inadequate.  Our guest-host, CNN's Alisyn Camerota, is joined by Bethany Johnson and Dr. Margaret M. Quinlan for a fascinating conversation about the history of mom guilt in America. The pair co-wrote the book, You're Doing It Wrong! Ep20: Living While Dying- Jan Booth, MA, RN, NC-BC Highlights“There is so much taboo and phobia, and reluctance to talk about death and dying and even though I may be a conversation opener in end-of-life, I still grew up and was formed within a culture that did not want to talk about death and dying.”  ~Jan BoothNurse Coaches begin where a person is in their own health, and they are open to discussing brokenness, hope, wellbeing, resilienceAll of us will die, yet there is an illusion that we all have time, so health is not urgent. Someone who lives with a serious illness, or is at their end of life has a different sense of urgencyNurse Coaches make a difference by talking about difficult situations and use their voices to make change in the present broken health care systemNurse Coaching is understanding how people change, seeing a readiness to change versus not readiness to change, and what contributes to their readiness to changePeople must believe they can change and have a vision for something different than what is. This does not come easy to most, so a partnership with a Nurse Coach is essentialAt the heart of coaching is a capacity to be fully present, to not be afraid of what someone is wrestling with, to not need to fix it, to not shut ourselves off because we're afraid, but to be able to be fully present. These are the keys to working with someone who's living with serious illness.Death is a natural process. Nurse Coaches can teach the human skills of how to incorporate death and impermanence into how we live.  If we don't learn the human skills of how to care for each other, we'll continue to feel lost

Move More Freely Through Life - Judy Fasone MSN-ED, RN, CTP, HWNC-BC, AHN-BC Highlights“My focus is self-care through movement, to move more freely, and I call it a moving meditation. Because if we slow our movements down and really become more aware of how things are working, it changes our whole way of being in the world.” ~Judy FasoneWhen you move more freely, it allows you to follow your heart, and this offers many more opportunities to feel joy and happiness.Combining Nurse Coaching with other modalities one is passionate about allows Nurse Coaching to become more personalized to the Nurse and to clients, patients, and communities.Nurse Coaches are entrepreneurs, and can also work in more traditional Nursing roles.Nurse Coaching reduces the use, impact, and burden to the healthcare system, because the skills of a Nurse Coach help people understand they can learn to rely on their own wisdom.  It also helps them act earlier, instead of waiting for illness to happen.Shifting Nursing practice to telehealth and becoming more comfortable in the virtual space opens more opportunities for Nurse Coaches to reach into their communities.

Episode 4:   Michelle Mortimer, BSN, RN, HN-BC HighlightsSelf-care means making sure that I have enough, that I am full enough on my own, that I'm eating healthy foods, that I'm managing my stress, that I'm noticing when I'm really stressed out, and like, taking a step back, and that I'm taking care of my physical being and also relationships; it's all part of it, you know, we look at the whole being.  ~Michelle MortimerCreating Nurse Coaching magic.  Nurse Coaching is magical.  There's magic in that pause, in that space-the magic allows that person you're with to connect with their true self and be it and that's when the magic happens.Nurses bring their scientific background, all of their training, assessment skills, critical thinking and more to the table.  This is why Nurses are highly effective health coaches.Nurse Coaches are innovative entrepreneurs and running their own businesses in our communities. When one listens with deep awareness, it helps bring out things people don't realize they were saying or thinking.  This listening helps people identify their own goals, which makes them much more successful.Hearing without judgment.   The more expression people are able to do, along with acknowledgement and validation, and then creating smart goals, starting small, and having small successes and then building upon them. It really works!  That whole process works.Nurse Coaches help people process big changes (like diabetes).  Instead of just going home with a paper printout that tells you all these things, you're going to work with a Nurse Health Coach and they're going to help you process that and really work through it. I see that as being a huge opportunity.

Today we discuss getting to the root cause of addiction and exploring what it means to live a life of sobriety. What is really going on with addiction? Is it good versus evil, is it a lack of morals or willpower, an ignorance of how addiction works, or is it something else altogether? Addiction is a very complex disease, and most people don't understand why or how people actually become addicted to drugs or alcohol. The truth is, quitting takes a lot more than good intentions or goodwill. This is because alcohol and drugs actually change the way the brain works and they change who we are. Who do you know that's suffering from a problem with addiction? Think about it. Maybe it’s someone you don't really know all that well, or maybe it's someone that's very close to you. This show is all about understanding addiction and the solutions available to help those that are struggling get the help that they need. My first guest, Sherry Burditt, is an RN, Board Registered in Holistic Nursing and the Clinical Director for Hemet Valley Recovery Center & Sage Retreat. As the child of an alcoholic father with addiction running throughout her family, Sherry, fortunately, did not inherit the addictive gene. Rather, she spent the better part of her life engaged in personally experiencing it and professionally treating it. Sherry shares insight on why people become addicted, the heavy baggage that comes along with addiction, and how shifting our thoughts and energy can change our whole lives. My second guest, Mary Lou Rodgers, is the founder and operator of Ohana House which is a luxury sober living for women who are seeking support on their path to recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. As an adopted child, Mary Lou struggled with abandonment issues her entire life. These issues along with the Irish gene for alcoholism turned what was once periodic binge drinking into what eventually became a diagnosis of alcoholism. Mary Lou shares her personal journey of lasting sobriety, the most critical component of getting sober, and how sober living helps transition people back into life after treatment.   We Discuss: The widespread prevalence of addiction in our society today The complexity of addiction and how it changes how our brain function and personality Why certain people end up becoming addicts and/or alcoholics The heavy and burdensome baggage that comes with addiction and how it can be removed  The management of Duality -- Light energy (nurturing) vs. Dark energy (depleting) How to reach the people that are high-functioning and don't believe they have a problem The importance of a peaceful, loving, and supportive environment on the road to sobriety How sober living creates a safe place for treatment and transitioning back into life The most critical component of getting sober and avoiding relapse and further suffering The 7 energy centers in the body and how these Chakras relate to addiction   Visit:  VoicesofCourage.us

We often have more contact with nurses than we do with our doctors, especially when we are in a hospital. They do much more than administer doses of medicine. They check on our comfort, develop a rapport with us and our frequent visitors, they watch our emotional state and progress and offer words of encouragement. I remember when my best friend was in Intensive Care in the hospital and I had her medical power of attorney. It was the nurses who I would check with on a daily basis. Of course I would speak with the doctor as well, but he had limited availability. The nurses were always there and could fill me in on more aspects of her health and wellbeing than the doctor could. They saw the total picture, the whole person. Was she eating well? Was she responsive when we weren't there? How was she coping? I valued the nurses and relied on them to keep me informed, and they did. Please join us Thursday to learn how a pioneer in holistic nursing is helping nurses become even more effective
