Inspiring Collective Community: Christine Gilchrist PhD, MPH, RN, NC-BC, CH Highlights"To each of you— to ask, at this point, 'what is it you're hoping for'? And then when you have that, when you've reflected on that, to go back inside and ask, 'what is your deeper hope'? I think, to be able to connect with feelings of hope through difficult times that certainly we experience in our lives and as a society, it's important to connect with hope, the feelings of hope, and what ultimately we're hoping for, because there's always, there's always hope in each moment." ~Christine Gilchrist PhD, MPH, RN, NC-BC, CHAh-Ha MomentsYou can do anything you set your mind to!Connect with your Community- they will hold up a mirror for you, to see how powerful you areWords and how we can connect them for our clients, patients and communities are important in the sense of change and evolutionImagine your future as you want it... and so it isYou'll find healing in communityLinks and ResourcesIntegrative Nurse Coaches in ACTION! podcastClinical Meditation and Imagery with Bonney and Richard SchaubHarnessing the Power of Hypnosis Intro CourseHypnosis for Nurses: Certification CourseCalm Collective CareDean Ornish programChristine's LinkedInChristine's YouTubeEp34: Powerfully Linking Curanderismo and Nurse Coaching-Caroline Ortiz, MS, MPH, RN, NV-BCArticles:Trauma-Disclosure, Meaning-Making, and Help-Seeking in Mothers Experiencing Homelessness: Results From a Trauma-Focused, Clinical Ethnographic Narrative InterventionPilot clinical trial of a clinical meditation and imagery intervention for chronic pain after spinal cord injuryA Randomized Trial of a Group-Based Integrative Medicine Approach Compared to Waitlist Control on Irritable Bowel Syndrome Symptoms in AdultsThe Nurse Coach Community – 700+ Amazing ConnectionsIntegrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integrative Nurse Coach FoundationWe provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting. Menopause Insights from a Nurse Coach-Suzanne Greiner BSN, RN, NC-BC Highlights“Yes, I'm going through perimenopause. And what do I want my perimenopause story to look like? Do I want to be a victim to going through this?Or do I want to be that victor? I went through perimenopause, and I was able to do this, and I was able to find solutions for my own health. And I think the kicker for me at that point in my perimenopausal journey was, I want this to be that when I'm 85 years old, and I look back on my life, this is the point that I chose for longevity of my life, versus a quick fix.So, every decision past, that point in time was, is this going to be helping my 85-year-old body to hike a mountain, or is it going to set me back? So those are the kinds of decisions of working with my future self. What does my future self-want me to do at this moment?” ~Suzanne Greiner BSN, RN, NC-BCAh-Ha MomentsIn mid-life, if you're lucky, you WILL go through the stages of menopause- perimenopause, menopause and post menopauseYou have choices and a voice as it relates to your health- and ALL aspects of your lifeImagine the life you want to life at 85 years old- ask yourself- is this a decision that will support me when I get to be 85?Let Them = Let Me…. Imagine flying to Hawaii for a humor keynote, only to have everything shift in a way you never saw coming. As a keynote speaker, comedian, and corporate speaker, I know that timing, adaptability, and engaging an audience are everything—but this was a whole new challenge. With the pressure on and no room for error, I had to think fast and use comedy in business to keep the energy high. What happened next proved that sometimes, the best moments in public speaking come when you least expect them, and that workplace humor can turn any situation into a success. https://www.theWorkLady.com Jan McInnis is a top keynote speaker, funny female motivational speaker, comedian, Master of Ceremonies, and comedy writer. This month I'm giving a special shout to the nursing industry- a dedicated group of caring professionals whom I've had the honor of coaching over the past few years. My guest Dr. Alysia Adams and I discuss the opportunities for the field of nursing to adapt to the modern era and take advantage of tools such as AI and social media. We discuss the opportunities nurse leaders have to promote the industry, create a unique brand, and redefine what it means to have an impact as a nurse leader. 86: Building a Meditation App- Ann Adams, MS, RN Highlights"Two supportive practices that are accessible to anybody is their breath— that can help regulate their nervous system, just by learning different ways to breathe. And gratitude. So a gratitude practice is free, and that helps you not ignore what's negative, but helps you scan the horizon for also what's good. If we have a dysregulated nervous system, we tend to look for what can be threatening, because that will be what saves our life. So a gratitude practice helps balance that out, that intentional practice of looking for the good." ~Ann Adams, MS, RN Ah-Ha MomentsTake your wisdom, creativity and passion and create something you've always wanted or needed“Sometimes, you don't always have the answers, you just know you need to begin.” ~ Dr. Barbara DosseyTwo supportive and accessible practices are breath and gratitudeLet your heart and inner wisdom guide you, it will never let you downYou will learn so much about yourself when you decide to dig in and do something that is fueled by your passion and desireLinks and Resources· Integrative Nurse Coaches in ACTION! podcast· Integrative Nurse Coach Certificate Program· Mindfulness Meditation: Stillness Practices for Nurses Specialty Course· CRUSH the Pain Instagram · CRUSH the Pain Meditation app on Google· CRUSH the Pain Meditation app on Apple· CRUSH the Pain website· Ann's email· Dean Ornish Intensive lifestyle changes for reversal of coronary heart disease (1998) article· Candace Pert Molecules of Emotion bookIntegrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integrative Nurse Coach FoundationWe provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting. We want Nurses, everyone, to feel like they are in the state of well being. We know that well being is really static. It's like in the present moment, I'm feeling well, whereas really, self development is about well becoming, because it's a much longer journey of... and never ending, a never ending journey of well becoming, right? That always has to be a major part of who we are and what we do, because without that experience and being able to develop ourselves, we can't sit with the suffering of others and do a meaningful job with them, or take on the suffering ourselves, or, you know, all of those pieces." ~Karen Avino EdD, RN, AHN-BC, HWNC-BCAh-Ha MomentsInnovative Specialty Courses for NursesUpdate on Nurse Coaching CPT CodesRevamping the online curriculum of the Integrative Nurse Coach Certificate Program (INCCP)Renewing Alumni Connection ProgramCelebrating the success of the Integrative Nurse Coach Symposium in FloridaExcitement about the Holistic Holiday at Sea+ MORE!Links and ResourcesIntegrative Nurse Coaches in ACTION! podcastEp25: It's Time to Re-Energize Nurses!- Karen AvinoEp72: Inspiring Nurse Voices at the 2024 INCA Symposium!Ep73: More Inspiring Nurse Voices from the 2024 INCA Symposium!Holistic Holiday at SeaINCA's Specialty Course PageKaren's email Integrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integrative Nurse Coach FoundationWe provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting. "In the Nurse coaching certificate course, we definitely learned about mindfulness. And you know, that sounds maybe trivial to somebody who's not familiar with Nurse coaching. Sure, we know mindfulness is research fact and very effective, but it just goes so much deeper than that. You know, we don't often as Nurses, allow ourselves enough time, time with our patients, time with ourselves, time to breathe, time to drink water, to take a rest, so allowing time and space to transpire, to let our bodies catch up with ourselves, to really hear what our patients are saying, you know, or what they're not saying.Time is... I really think mindfulness and time are so connected that we can be mindful, intentionally mindful, if we allow ourselves more time. So that is a big one. You know, I think that's a big one in this busy healthcare space, allowing more time or creating a way to allow for more of that." ~Maggie Gardner RN, BSN, HWNC-BC, CH-CAh Ha MomentsAs Nurses, we can do things to numb our emotional experiences- social media, alcohol, drugs, ignoring the things we experience - this is not serving you, it never has- maybe there is another way...There are so many pathways you can choose to take in your professional and personal life- go in the direction that lights you up- that is the best way to go- even if it's scaryYour sensitive heart is exactly what is needed to shift the way the healthcare system is being run! “…the problem and what is driving Nurses from the profession in droves like never seen before— please don't talk to me about attrition, well, yes, that's a factor—the world is hemorrhaging Nurses. And that's a quote from Dr. Terrance Hill, medical sociologist, the world is hemorrhaging Nurses and the root cause for that, it's not about burnout. And please stop gaslighting Nurses about burnout resilience. 81: Building a Business as a New Nurse Coach- Whitney Distefano BSN, RN, NC-BC “As a new business owner in the community, it's just been one learning opportunity after another, and truly just like a practice of vulnerability, of showing up and putting yourself out there and really doing the best I can to be detached from the outcome, which is what they teach us as Nurse Coaches as well. Showing up day in and day out, and knowing that, you're gonna find things that you don't know how to do, you're going to find that there are questions you didn't even know were questions. And just having to come back to the attitude that, everything is figure out-able.” ~Whitney Distefano BSN, RN, NC-BCAh Ha MomentsIt's absolutely vulnerable to be a new business owner, especially because Nurses are never taught how to be entrepreneurs. And yet, we can still show up and be open to the possibilities!Everything is ‘figure-out-able'. Workplace violence in healthcare requires a comprehensive approach, including improved reporting, supportive policies, technology, and legal protections, to create a safer and more respectful environment for healthcare professionals. For this episode of the Straight Out of Health IT podcast, Dr. Rhoda Collins, Chief Nursing Officer at Kontakt.io, has a conversation with host Christopher Kunney about the rising issue of workplace violence against healthcare professionals. Dr. Collins explains that most workplace violence involves verbal abuse from patients, although physical assaults and lateral violence (among colleagues) also occur. She emphasizes the need to remove the stigma around reporting incidents and create a culture where workers feel safe seeking help. Dr. Collins identifies stress as a key driver of coworker-to-coworker violence and notes that improvements in diversity, inclusion, and communication have reduced such incidents over the years. She mentions the role of professional organizations and guidelines, such as those from the Joint Commission, which help hospitals address violence. Technology, such as wearable distress buttons, is also playing a growing role in preventing violence by enabling quick responses in emergencies. Towards the end, Dr. Collins discusses legal measures, including laws that classify healthcare workplace violence as a felony in 32 states. She also encourages advocacy for federal legislation and promotes resources from organizations like the American Nurses Association and Emergency Nurses Association to help healthcare workers and institutions better handle workplace violence. It is the collective responsibility of communities, healthcare administrators, and lawmakers to ensure a safer environment for healthcare professionals. Tune in to learn about the growing issue of workplace violence against healthcare workers and how we can work together to create safer, more supportive environments for those who care for others! "Nurses are so well suited for psychedelics, and we bring so many skill sets that other disciplines don't, and I don't think any one discipline has it all, but I think we bring a really important piece of the puzzle. And if you think about it, Nurses are with patients in non ordinary states of consciousness, sometimes every day. If you're a hospice Nurse or working in labor and delivery, if you're in Psych, if you're working with patients, you know, coming in and out of anesthesia, patients with delirium. So many reasons why somebody could be an altered state or even just shock trauma. You know, emergency Nursing. And Nurses often are with patients for prolonged periods of time. You know, offering their caring, healing presence." ~ Dr. Stephanie Van Hope DNP, RN, NC-BCAh-Ha MomentsPsychedelic medicine is becoming more mainstream, and Nurses are stepping up willingly to lead and support their patients, clients and communitiesNurses are perfectly aligned to lead and work in psychedelic medicine as they are often with patients in altered states of consciousness throughout a shiftSacred medicine, also connected to entheogens, because they can help create a link to God within or to experience God within and the use of rituals and traditions to connect with the DivineNurses, you can absolutely take your passions and your knowledge and use both to create courses, programs, concepts and ideas that you know in your heart and will support fellow humans (and yourself) on life's journeyLinks and ResourcesIntegrative Nurse Coaches in ACTION! podcastIntegrative Nurse Coach Certificate Program Return to Roots course pageAJN Psychedelics Article: Penn, A., Dorsen, C. Together We Can Stop Shame and Blame in Nursing-Kristy Meyer RN, BSN, NC-BC Highlights“I feel like self-care is often discussed in a way like, well, you're burned out, it's because you're not doing self-care, or you're burned out, that means you're not resilient. And I feel like there's a lot of shame and blame in there, when really, we work in really tough environments, and we see really hard things, and a lot of times we have a lot of defensive mechanisms, I believe, like shielding ourselves from that, not feeling some of the feelings, and that's a good skill at times, because that's what you need to do to get through your work shift. But internalizing a lot of feelings and not taking care of your own basic needs just leads to a lot of health problems for us as Nurses.” ~Kristy Meyer RN, BSN, NC-BCAh Ha MomentsShame and blame are evident in discussions about self-care. Like the things you're doing daily to help yourself aren't good enough. It's important to change that narrativeIt's easier for Nurses to receive assistance when they can connect with a fellow Nurse, especially for health and wellness coachingIt can be difficult for Nurses to identify they are burned out and need help, because they are sooo good at caring for othersYou are powerful beyond measure and have the capacity to healLinks and ResourcesIntegrative Nurse Coach Academy INCCP CourseIntegrative Nurse Coaches in ACTION! podcastCultivating Shifts Integrative Health Nurse Coaching and EducationKristy's emailKristy's Facebook*****Integrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integr Our mission is to provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting Integrative Nurse Coach Academy I Integr Our mission is to provide nurses with a global community for learning, networking, and reconnecting Thank you for listening. Here's a quick story from my days on the road in comedy clubs. https://www.theWorkLady.com Jan McInnis is a top keynote speaker, funny female motivational speaker, comedian, Master of Ceremonies, and comedy writer. She has written for Jay Leno's The Tonight Show monologues as well as many other people, places, and even the Jerry Springer Show (her parents are proud). For over 25 years, she's traveled the country as a keynote speaker and comedian, sharing her unique and practical tips on how to use humor in business (yes, it's a business skill!). She's been featured in The Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post for her clean humor, and she's the author of two books: Finding the Funny Fast – How to Create Quick Humor to Connect with Clients, Coworkers, and Crowds, and Convention Comedian: Stories and Wisdom From Two Decades of Chicken Dinners and Comedy Clubs. She also has a popular podcast titled Comedian Stories: Tales From the Road in Under 5 Minutes. In her former life, she was a marketing executive in Washington, D.C. for national non-profits, and she received the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives “Excellence in Education” Award. 65: Feeding Compassion: Exploring Intuitive Eating in Nursing-Tiffany North, BSN, RN, INC, Certified Intuitive Eating Professional Highlights "Intuitive eating is really about letting go of shoulds around food, letting go of this food is good, this food is bad, and instead, looking at food from a body attunement lens. What are the underlying needs associated with various body signals?" ~Tiffany North, BSN, RN, INC, Certified Intuitive Eating ProfessionalAh-Ha MomentsNurses can do sooo many things with their careers!Nursing careers can help us shift into different directions as we learn more about ourselves, and sometimes we don't know exactly where it will lead us and we still trustLearning to slow down can feel very uncomfortableFood and relationships with food can be a very common area of focus for every human beingPeople's relationship with foodIntuitive eating is letting go of ‘shoulds' around food, or, this food is good, or this food is bad.Nurses are layering in all types of education, experiences and creativity into our Nursing practice in safe and appropriate waysOur society is pressurized with ‘should's about food, body image and relationships with food and our bodiesIntuitive eating helps us look internally to see how past experiences affect us today and help us unravel and reconnect to ourselves andIt can be very powerful to ask your body what you're experiencing. 64: Regulating the Nervous System as Nurse Coaches- Ellie Monjoseph, RN, BSN, NC-BC Highlights“Are you fighting something? Are you fleeing? Are you, what's called, collapse or shutdown, and just trying to figure out where we're at with our nervous system, so we can support ourselves? It's plugging in some of the missing pieces that an unresolved stress takes away from us. It kind of masks or clouds our vision of ‘where am I?'. Because when you think of when you're connected, when you're joy-filled, when you're present, you can make decisions very easily.” ~ Ellie Monjoseph BSN, RN, NC-BCAh-Ha MomentsNursing experience gives you a front row to witnessing humanityListen to where you are being called… you can go in whatever direction you chooseIt's important to continue to do your own inner work to support yourself, to understand yourself more deeplyFear, imposter syndrome, people pleasing, and the inner critic can sound really loud when we don't address our unique, deep needsAn inner critic is typically a voice that is not yours, from your pastConnecting to your heart space, a purposeful pause, to connect with yourself. What do you need right now? What does your heart say right now? This voice is a calm, kind voice that will help you move into the next space that you need right now. It's a power move to ask for help! It's vulnerable to do, but it creates a cushion of a supportive community around usWhat is this urge to flee? The sympathetic system, fight, flee, shutting down… wanting to change jobs, move, give up, etc. Bringing awareness to self is imperative to understand and recognize how we're responding so we can take a purposeful step that is truly best for youHealing begins when we realize we're interconnectedLinks and ResourcesIntegrative Nurse Coach Certificate Program with the Integrative Nurse Coach AcademyIntegrative and Holistic Specialty ProgramsFree to Live Wellness - Ellie's websiteEllie on Instagram***** Thank you for listening. 63: Nurses Overcoming Addiction- Kacie Salas, BSN, RN, NC-BC Highlights"My coping mechanism was, drinking and using. I think symptoms of cumulative caretaking trauma are shame, guilt, anxiety, grief. Right? Once I started to learn that language, I realized that it had been something I've really suffered with my whole life.Through Nurse Coaching and all the tools that I learned in my Nurse Coaching program, I was able to start to guide my private clients and my debriefing clients through that process where I think, again, just opening up the conversation, you know? And making people feel like they're less alone. They really just want to feel seen, heard and validated. How to Take Nurse Coaching Anywhere!- Deborah McElligott, DNP, ANP-BC, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC, CDE Highlights"Coaching adds the component of not knowing. It was so powerful for me because as an NP, you had to be the expert. You know, as a Nurse, you have to be an expert. You can't give the wrong medication, you'll kill somebody. You have to be perfect. And this not knowing part of coaching, where you can hold the space for your client, your patient, your peer, and help them discover their best way of becoming who they need to be, was really powerful. You know, knowing that you can be an expert, but you can also be a not knowing person at the same time." ~Deborah McElligott, DNP, ANP-BC, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC, CDEAh-Ha MomentsNurse Coaching eliminates labels, and teaches us to hold space, and to ‘not know''You can be an expert and not know at the same timeThe skills of Nurse Coaching become part of how you practice as a Nurse, and you will use these skills every dayIf you are looking for a place to practice Coaching and holistic Nursing look at your system, what are they doing, what are their needs, and how can you help them? You can simplify some holistic modalities to teach them to your system, or in the communityYou can teach many things through the ‘coaching approach', as opposed to the ‘telling approach'You don't have to wait for a position to open up, instead, create it for yourself!Imagery practices can open up so many healing opportunities for yourselfJournal questions… what surprised you today? “We see this a lot in oncology too, where we're seeing a lot of use of hypnosis in even outpatient oncology, Nurses learning hypnotic language and using it there. Patients starting to feel more supported. Like, I knew you supported me before, but when we add that extra layer of using our communication styles with more conscious effort, our patients feel it, they draw more meaning from those experiences.” ~Christy Cowgill BCH, RN, CRNA, MBA, CHBE, NC-BCAh-Ha MomentsPlacebo and beliefs are powerful and can have reduced negative symptomologyNocebo is a negative suggestion, like side effects, headaches, nausea, weight gain etc.Elimination of or creating positive flips in language and words will support our patients more effectivelyHypnosis is a state of being conscious and focused and taking in suggestions as if they are trueAdding in positivity to neutralize the negatives helps support full healingWords are important for the meaning you understand for your healingNeuro-linguistic programming in offering feedback in the workplace with a “Feedback Sandwich” 1.
