On this episode of All Bodies. All Foods., Ashley and Sam sit down with Laura Maalouf, a multifaceted individual who had previously battled Atypical Anorexia and recently published a self-help journal Not Sick Enough: Atypical Anorexia. Laura's story is one of frustration, resilience, and continued growth; her struggles were minimized, misunderstood, and misdiagnosed every time she reached out for help. Finally receiving the support and validation she had been longing for, she obtained the tools she needed and created a workbook to help others on the same road to recovery. Unfortunately, Laura's story is not uncommon. The medical, mental health, and dietetic fields have perpetuated the myth that only “underweight” bodies experience the symptoms of anorexia. In fact, Atypical Anorexia and Anorexia Nervosa share the same exact criteria with the only difference being “body size.” Even though these are technically different diagnoses, the physical and psychological consequences are just as serious. Today I'm talking to Emma Carter – author, mother, emotional coach and therapist. Emma was born in a small town in South Wales and now lives in Derbyshire with her two children, a cat who likes nothing more than jumping on her laptop when she is working, and her scruffy but adorable dog who melts everyone's heart. Emma has always been passionate about helping others, which led her into a career in healthcare. Continuously searching for solutions to help her daughter, who was suffering from anorexia nervosa, she has completed several courses and gained a better understanding of mental health illnesses and eating disorders. This ignited a fire in her belly to make a difference and she is now a trained emotional coach and therapist. By listening to other parents and carers, Emma saw a need to share her story by writing a book – Slaying Monsters, Dodging Doughtnuts. Writing this book has been a cathartic way to help her deal with her daughter developing anorexia and she hopes that it will offer support to others on the same path. Emma admits to being a fan of Welsh rugby and loves watching matches with her family, particularly if they win. When she is not writing or supporting her daughter, she enjoys spending time outdoors, walking her dog and taking photographs. In the episode today, you'll hear all about Emma's ongoing journey in supporting her daughter through anorexia nervosa. Emma shares openly her coping strategies for staying sane. She talks about mistakes she's made and what has helped most. This is an incredible conversation and will be hugely inspiring and supportive for anyone listening who is supporting someone with an eating disorder. I hope that you find it helpful. This week on Wellbeing is the last in our 13-part series on anorexia and focusses on anorexia recovery with internationally renowned anorexia recovery expert and author Carolyn Costin. Having gone through her own anorexia journey, Carolyn became a psychotherapist in 1979. She is considered a pioneer in the field. In 1996, she founded the first licensed eating disorder treatment centre in a residential home setting. Her recovery program is unique as it involves the staff and clients shopping, eating, and cooking together, attempting to evoke skills for long-term recovery from anorexia. More recently, Carolyn opened The Carolyn Costin Institute in 2017 which offers training for clinicians in the eating disorders field. In this episode Carolyn talks about when people should seek help with anorexia, why people may find it difficult to ask for help, the history of the anorexia recovery sector, the recovery process step by step, how the psychological underpinnings of anorexia are taken into account in the recovery process, the importance of self-exploration in anorexia recovery, the affordability of recovery services, and how recovery can differ from person to person. “You have to dissociate the concept that food equals weight gain because if they have that in their mind forever, as soon as they can stop doing it (balanced eating), they'll stop doing it.” - Carolyn Costin on this episode of Wellbeing Tune in after a fortnight when we present an audio documentary using content from our anorexia series. After discussing anorexia at length with those affected both directly and indirectly by the condition, this week on Wellbeing we are moving on to talking about the recovery sector in the anorexia field. During lockdown, author and psychotherapist Matthew Campling released his book “Diary of a Male Anorexic” which covers his journey with the condition and also his recovery from it. In this episode, Mathew shares his thoughts on the anorexia recovery sector both from his own personal experience as someone having gone through the recovery sector but also now form his perspective as a psychotherapist in the field. Matthew's other books include “Therapeutic Weight Loss” and “Eating Disorder Self-Cure: The Matthew Method”. In this episode Matthew talks about his own experience with the recovery sector, his book “Diary of a Male Anorexic”, his views on the effectiveness of the recovery sector, the importance of fixing the psychological underpinnings of anorexia - not just the physical habits, the importance of not giving starved people more food then the body can absorb, how family can help their loved ones with anorexia in the recovery process, how recovery may differ person to person, and society's view on size and how that interacts with anorexia. “If they (recovery places) don't come from the idea that its the dysfunction - self defence - of the psyche, then they are always going to be looking at it from the outside.” - Matthew Campling on this episode of Wellbeing Tune in next week when we talk with anorexia recovery expert Carolyn Costin. In this episode of "The Fit Mess," hosts Jeremy and Zach share their interview Jaime Filer, an online mental and physical health coach. Jamie shares her personal journey with anorexia and how bodybuilding helped save her. During the episode, Jamie emphasizes the importance of taking small steps toward improving your health. She believes that progress is like an elevator, it requires multiple cables to lift it up. Therefore, she encourages her clients to not rely only on the scale but to also use progress photos, how their clothes fit, how they feel in their own skin, measurements, and compliments from others as measures of progress. Jaime also stresses the importance of clean eating, stating that the food we put in our bodies is brain fuel and can have a significant impact on our thoughts and feelings. She suggests incorporating whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and fibrous carbs into our diets. The conversation covers various topics, including: The importance of building confidence from the outside in and how it can lead to consistency, competence, and confidence in other areas of life. The connection between physical health and mental health, and how movement and exercise can help reduce the impact of childhood trauma and other issues. The importance of using multiple measures of progress, such as the scale, clothes fit, progress photos, feelings, and measurements to track progress. Cleaning up your diet and incorporating more fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to fuel your brain and improve mental and physical performance. It is important to remember that progress takes time and it is important to not put too much pressure on yourself. Jamie's advice is to take small steps and not wait 10 years to start on our journey toward a healthier lifestyle. If you are interested in learning more about Jaime's work and philosophy, be sure to follow her on Instagram and visit her website at jaimefiler.com. She shares her personal journey, her experiences, and her knowledge of mental and physical health, and provides tips and advice for those who want to improve their overall well-being. This week I had the pleasure of talking to Athina Crilley (and her cats, Quiet Jasper and Shouty Jake)Athina is a podcast host, author, content creator (and all-round very busy!). She is also a recovered anorexic and was kind enough to take some time out of her very busy schedule to talk to us about her recovery journey and her experience in overcoming her eating disorder. She spoke about life as a young person with anorexia, how the NHS deals (or fails to) deal with children with eating disorders. We touched on social media, the problem with "influencers" who give us the idea that we have to do what they do so that we can look the way they look. She also spoke about the importance of a good support network to aid your recovery and what she does now that she is recovered from her eating disorder. You can find Athina everywhere; Her websiteTikTokInstagramYouTubeIn the news this week I touch on the story I spoke about a few months ago. If you remember David Bennett was given a genetically modified heart 2 months ago and unfortunately this week he passed away. I received an email about this this week that said something along the lines of "See? This shows it will never work and that GM is a bad idea". That kind of thinking shows a bit of a misunderstanding about how medical procedures, and science, progress so I talk a bit about why this was still a tremendous achievement and is very promising indeed Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. BMI should never be used as the primary indicator for eating disorder diagnosis, or for determining who is considered 'unwell enough' to access specialist treatment. Why do I think this is harmful? It can lead to potentially dangerous delays, neglecting imperative early intervention strategies, thus triggering suffers further down a destructive pathwayIt's important to remember that the vast majority of eating disorders aren't immediately visible - they're primarily psychological illnesses, evidently proving that the simplistic calculation of BMI is a totally inadequate strategy for diagnosis.

This phase is primarily about finding purpose, rediscovering joy, and ultimately looking ahead. While the redefining stage encompasses the process of assessing what life could be like away from the eating disorder, rediscovering is about becoming actionable, becoming intentional and putting it into practice. It's about putting yourself in discomfort zones, building resilience, understanding that backward steps aren't indicative of failure, as well as challenging yourself and subsequently acquiring growth from moments of adversity. It also consists of incorporating productive coping mechanisms and the construction of relapse prevention plans, allowing you to feel equipped and prepared if you experience any moments of difficulty

Today I'm talking to Hope Virgo. Hope is a multi-award winner mental health campaigner, speaker, author and an ambassador for MQ. She suffered with anorexia for over 4 years, before being admitted to a Mental Health Hospital in 2007. Since being discharged, she has fought to stay well, and she now campaigns to raise awareness and remove stigma around eating disorders, and to improve access for all to treatment. Hope is also the initiator behind the #dumpthescales campaign, which demands support for everyone suffering with an eating disorder, regardless of their BMI. Today I'm talking to Katrina Smale, recovery warrior, mental health advocate and English teacher in training. Katrina was diagnosed with atypical anorexia in 2012 and went on to have three hospital admissions, with varying approaches. Katrina's experience of anorexia was one not dominated by concerns around weight or shape, rather linked to low mood and then decreased appetite. Frustratingly, Katrina felt that this was not acknowledged by the professionals supporting her, particularly in her first two admissions, which led to a delay in getting the help she needed. However, Katrina's final admission was different and this was a turning point in recovery, when the underlying problems and feelings were addressed. Katrina shares her story today to give hope to others struggling and to shine a light on some misconceptions around the illness and treatment. I hope that you enjoy. *TW*Today I am joined with a fellow anorexia warrior, Brittney (@bites_by_b), to have a no-filter, raw conversation of our experiences with eating disorders. We raise awareness of the psychologically damaging reality of anorexia nervosa, how isolating, terrifying and identity engulfing it can become – seeking comfort and control in abusing, malnourishing and depriving our bodies. How small habits and rituals can detrimentally develop and amplify into a sinister, life threatening situation, where your individual lifestyle, behaviours, characteristics are controlled and altered in aid of the harmful progression of the eating disorderWe also discuss our poor experience with doctors within the recovery process – where medical practitioners solely focus on reverting symptoms, rather than providing consideration towards psychological triggers and mental health issues.Often, and specifically within our situations, the severity of the illness is totally minimised – being refused treatment due to weight not being perceived as “low enough”, which only triggered the anorexia further, craving validation – only pushing us to pursue the disordered tendencies, putting us into a life threatening position. Thus raising the discussion on the essentiality of early intervention and the application of prevention techniques.Overall, we talk toxic environments, heavily dysmorphic mindsets and how this harmful illness influences and manipulates you to totally dictate and dedicate your life to it – no matter the detrimental consequences upon your emotional and physical health, relationships or future.Due to the nature of the discussion, I would like to pre-warm any listeners of a fragile mindset and apply a trigger warning. The conversations we have regarding our previous circumstances are very raw, and can possibly be translated as triggering, so please skip this episode if you think it may impact you negatively.https://www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/

I am again joined with Josceline (@HoneyAreYouHappy) to talk all things mental health, anorexia, our experiences and sharing our stories. We discuss the identity crisis in association with anorexia - having to fight the overbearing critical voice, labelling and peoples perception of mental health.Additionally, we talk about relationships and intimacy. How letting people in can be daunting and anxiety inducing, after a prolonged period of isolation - both literal and metaphorical. Anorexia, quite frankly is an emotional and abusive relationship with yourself, therefore learning to trust is certainly challenging. We raise the topic of pro-ana websites and triggering content online - which is so scarily accessible for vulnerable and fragile mindsets, and how essential it is to navigate a safe online system. Claire is transferring colleges next fall and plans to major in journalism. She has a health & wellness Instagram where she aims to spread positivity, mental health awareness and motivation to all. She hopes to do the same one day with her writing. FYI this is a very open and honest conversation. Yoga Teacher Eating Disorder Education with Tabitha Farrar On today's episode, Shannon and Tabitha Farrar reflect on eating disorders, such as disordered eating and anorexia, and its relationship to the yoga world. As Shannon notes, January is a busy time for yoga teachers. Many new students are influenced by the tradition of the New Year's Resolution as a way to make a fresh start or establish new patterns (often eating better and exercising more), so eating disorder education is especially relevant at this time of year. Tabitha Farrar is an eating disorder recovery coach who speaks and writes about effective and realistic recovery approaches for adults with restrictive eating disorders. Tabitha recovered from 10 years of severe anorexia and is passionate about helping adult sufferers find a sustainable recovery that works for them. She is the author of Love Fat, numerous articles on eating disorders and the founder of 2 support forums. Tabitha is currently working on her second book, A Workbook for Anorexia Recovery. Recovery from Anorexia is often a time of heightened anxiety and stress. Managing recovery while looking after a young family is a reality for many adult sufferers. In this podcast Tabitha talks to an adult in recovery, Erin, about managing recovery with young children. About Erin: I am 36, and have lived in Colorado my entire life. I currently live in Highlands Ranch and have two children, 11 and 6. I have been married for 15 years. I studied sociology, philosophy and women's studies in college. I have struggled with issues around food and body image since I was a preteen. My eating disorder became severe at the age of 33. I want to help people of all ages, backgrounds, and weights understand that they can indeed develop this illness and that it is a life threatening disorder that needs to be taken seriously. I hope my experience can help others know they are not alone if they are struggling to recover while also being a parent. Support this podcast via Patreon! Just me in this podcast! Responding to questions that I get frequently around Anorexia recovery and weight restoration. How to know when you are really weight restored? Let me tell you it is not something that you can calculate via a math equation or estimate via looking on a height/weight chart. Weight restoration is a process of gaining weight until you are within a healthy weight range (I recommend a BMI of 22 at least) and continuing to eat without restriction until you no longer fear further weight gain. This podcast fully explains my position on that weight restoration, target weights, and weight versus mental state restoration. Support this podcast via Patreon! Hunger is a fascinating and crucial topic in Anorexia recovery. Navigating hunger can be difficult when hunger signals are either nonexistent, sporadic, or unrelenting. At times of under-nutrition, most people with restrictive eating disorders such as Anorexia experience a vast reduction in hunger cues — this is a very normal result of the body moving into starvation mode. When we start to eat in recovery, hunger signals can be all over the place! In this podcast, Tabitha Farrar gives some insight into hunger based on her own experience and also those of the people with whom she was worked. Support this podcast via Patreon! In this podcast Tabitha talks about her experience with recovery binges when she was recovering from Anorexia. She describes how she went from restriction, into a binge-restrict cycle. More importantly, she talks about how the way out of that binge-restrict cycle is to find the restriction that is still present in your eating and eliminate it. thus allowing the body to eat freely and unlimited.
