World Building for Masochists
Episode 132: Just a Small Town Worldbuild, ft. CHERIE PRIEST

World Building for Masochists

A lot of the time, fantasy worldbuilding invokes huge maps, spanning civilizations and continents, with characters traversing vast distances on their epic quests. But what about the worldbuilding that happens with a tighter focus on an intimate, even insular location? Guest Cherie Priest joins us to discuss creating small towns just ripe for gothic mysteries, peculiar traditions, and weird, haunting circumstances. What does isolation -- either naturally developing, imposed by larger-scale conditions, or willfully chosen -- do to a group of people? What sorts of lore and habits will spring up in such areas? And how do you, as a worldbuilder, think about their infrastructure -- or the lack thereof -- and how that might affect your characters and your plot? [Transcript TK] Our Guest: Cherie Priest is the author of two dozen books and novellas, most recently the Booking Agents mysteries Grave Reservations and Flight Risk. She also wrote gothic horror project The Toll and haunted house thriller The Family Plot – as well as the hit YA graphic novel mash-ups I Am Princess X and its follow up, The Agony House. But she is perhaps best known for the steampunk pulp adventures of the Clockwork Century, beginning with Boneshaker. She has been nominated for the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award, and the Locus award – which she won with Boneshaker. Cherie has also written a number of urban fantasy titles, and composed pieces (large and small) for George R. R. Martin's shared world universe, the Wild Cards. Her short stories and nonfiction articles have appeared in such fine publications as Weird Tales, Publishers Weekly, and numerous anthologies – and her books have been translated into nine languages in eleven countries. Although she was born in Florida on the day Jimmy Hoffa disappeared, for the last twenty years Cherie has largely divided her time between Chattanooga, TN, and Seattle, WA – where she presently lives with her husband and a menagerie of exceedingly photogenic pets.

A psychic travel agent and a Seattle PD detective solve a murder in this quirky mystery in the vein of Lisa Lutz's The Spellman Files and Charlaine Harris's Aurora Teagarden series. About Cherie: I write novels. I mean, I do other things too – but the books are probably the reason you're reading this. So here goes. To date, I've had 24 full-length projects published. My most recent books are The Toll, The Agony House, and The Family Plot. My best-known book is probably Boneshaker (2009) – which was nominated for a Nebula Award and a Hugo Award. Boneshaker also won the PNBA Award, as well as the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. On a more personal note – in 2006 I moved from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Seattle, Washington. Then in 2012, I moved back to Tennessee. In 2017, I moved back to Seattle – where I live at present with my husband, two dogs, and a very large cat we call the House Yeti. It's kind of a long story. I was born in Tampa, Florida, on the day Jimmy Hoffa disappeared. I'm inordinately fond of zombies, trashy goth music, and cheap red wine. I have a phobic aversion to unfinished ceramics, an allergy to yellow dye #7, and a morbid fear of sloths. For further stats, check my Wikipedia entry. It's mostly correct, though often at least partially wrong – and routinely out of date. Wikipedia won't let me fix anything, even my occupations, publications, or graduation years. Apparently I'm not qualified to address such matters of hearsay. GRAVE RESERVATIONS: Meet Leda Foley: devoted friend, struggling travel agent, and inconsistent psychic. When Leda, sole proprietor of Foley's Flights of Fancy, impulsively re-books Seattle PD detective Grady Merritt's flight, her life changes in ways she couldn't have predicted. After watching his original plane blow up from the safety of the airport, Grady realizes that Leda's special abilities could help him with a cold case he just can't crack. Despite her scattershot premonitions, she agrees for a secret reason: her fiancé's murder remains unsolved. Leda's psychic abilities couldn't help the case several years before, but she's been honing her skills and drawing a crowd at her favorite bar's open-mic nights, where she performs Klairvoyant Karaoke—singing whatever song comes to mind when she holds people's personal effects. Now joined by a rag-tag group of bar patrons and pals alike, Leda and Grady set out to catch a killer—and learn how the two cases that haunt them have more in common than they ever suspected. Current Futures: A Sci-Fi Ocean Anthology, edited by Ann Vandermeer (rec’d by Stephanie) Questions 1. Hey y’all! Could I ask for two separate recommendations? One is for my job and one is for my personal reading. I would appreciate it.  My professional recommendation: I am a 7th and 8th grade history teacher and I’m looking for some middle grade historical fiction books for the classroom, preferably Texas history and US history since those are the subjects I teach.  My personal recommendation: I really, really enjoyed True Detective, especially season 1 with Matthew McConnaughey and Woody Harrelson. I would like to read dark crime/detective/mystery/thriller books similar to True Detective.  Thank you so much for your help, I really enjoy the podcast! Respectfully, -Mason 2. I would love some recs for my Dad. He is basically retired bc of Covid. He has worked from home since March 2019 and watched ALL the tv shows and I want him to have some mental stimulation. I can’t remember the last book he read but I can tell you he loves sports, westerns, detective stuff and small town America. He would HATE anything with fantasy, sci-fi or true crime.   -Donya 3. I just finished Ask Again, Yes. And I absolutely loved it! I’m wanting to find another novel similar to it. I think I loved how the characters were so fully drawn and rich. The author did such a great job exploring all the characters personal backgrounds that way you fully understood who they were in all their complexities. I enjoyed the dynamic between the two families and the special, almost idyllic, childhood friendship between Peter and Kate. I also loved watching how the people changed over time. Books that I’ve enjoyed before that felt similar to this one are Little Fires Everywhere and Commonwealth. Thanks! -Emily  4. I’m finishing up with all the fall mysteries and spooky reads, and would love a recommendation for something heartwarming to read around the winter holidays/darkest week of the year. I typically like to read something lighthearted or at least with a happy ending, about characters with some emotional complexity and strong chosen-family relationships. LGBTQIA characters are pretty important to me, but the chosen family storyline is most important. Last year I read The Snow Child and loved it, but I could also go for something like House in the Cerulean Sea. Holiday or wintery themes are welcome but not necessary. I love fantasy, literary fiction, and memoirs (but am not into reading short stories or books that really center romance). Thanks so much, -Angela 5. I’ve been listening to your podcast for years and now need help. I finished reading The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune recently and completely fell in love with it. I loved the story, I loved the adult characters and I loved the children characters. I loved their relationships with each other and I loved the growth throughout the book of Linus. This is just such a sweet cozy read and I would love to find something similar. Any suggestions you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! -Ashley 6. I have desperately been trying to find a book like Lovely War by Julie Berry. I read it back in June and haven’t found a book that even compares since.  My favourite things about this book were the mythology, the romance, the time period (1920s), the way the gods interacted with the humans, the portrayal of death, the settings (England and France with a little bit of Belgium and America), etc.  It would be SO SO amazing if you could find any books like it! Thank you.  PS: LOVE your show and have so many new amazing books because of it.  -Niamh 7. So I’m looking for poetry audiobook recommendations. I recently bought Lana Del Rey’s Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass on audio and found it to be extremely therapeutic. I’m in law school now and don’t have the time to read anything except case books. I also found I have about zero capacity for concentration left outside of my class material and find my mind wandering during even my most favorite podcasts (Get Booked) which I listen to for the therapeutic aspect. But I found that Violet is something I can listen to over and over again and I feel soothed. I like that it’s ethereal and nostalgic. I like themes of love and love for your city and the personification of a city. I like the dreaminess of it too. I do like spoken word but I’d prefer things that aren’t particularly heart wrenching or political. I’m looking more for an escape than an awakening. Hope I haven’t made this impossible! Thanks
