Happy Halloween from The History Things Podcast! For the last couple seasons the guys have brought you fun, spooky episodes for the Halloween holiday and this year is no different. Ever notice how dark children's rhymes can be? One of the better known in the late 19th and early 20th century, though mostly forgotten today, featured the story of Lizzie Borden and what she may have done to her parents in one of the most famous double homicide's in US history. This Halloween Pat and Matt got to go on a deep dive into the Borden murders and her sensational trial with author Sarah Miller! Sarah gives the guys the lowdown on her research and her changing view of Lizzie as she wrote her book, "The Borden Murders: Lizzie Borden and the Trial of the Century". This is a fun, if macabre, discussion on murder, the law and the place of women in society near the turn of the last century. Definitely one to check out!The History Things Podcast is brought to you by HistoryNet, publisher of 9 different historical magazines including; the Civil War Times, American History, & Military History! We all know the nursery rhyme, but do you know the unsolved true crime that rocked Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892? We speak with Lizzie Borden House tour guide Ryk McIntyre to help us separate fact from fiction, and perhaps figure out why humans love dark tourism so much. On this week's episode, we look at the case of Lizzie Borden and the murders of her father and stepmother.
In this episode, author Joe DeSantis discusses the infamous Lizzie Borden murder case, and introduces his new book, "The Maplecroft Message". On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were viciously murdered in broad daylight in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. Their daughter Lizzie was accused of the ax murders and brought to trial. After three weeks, the jury deliberated for just two hours before announcing their verdict – not guilty. The case is one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in American history, one that my guest Joe DeSantis has done extensive research on. Lizzie Borden took an axe.... you know how the old nursery rhyme goes! This week we delve into the true crime genre and explore the story of Lizzie Borden and the Borden family murders. It was a sweltering hot August in Massachusetts, and tensions were high. This culminated in the brutal killings of Andrew and Abby Borden in 1892. Both were struck repeatedly in the head with an axe, a rage-filled crime which remains unsolved to this day. We take a look at the list of suspects and ask the tough questions, like how on earth did people live without indoor plumbing? Tune in to hear what we think happened all those years ago, and who we think was responsible for the murders. As always, we'll cover spooky and unusual current events including birds falling from the sky and a woman getting weird with a hairless cat on an airplane. Fresh from the Easy Bake Oven, we'll enjoy adorable peanut butter cookie cauldrons with chocolate buttercream frosting. Bake along with us and join us on our hunt for the truth about the Borden family murders! Happy haunting!

Episode 32 starts with one of the most infamous murder cases in American history. Lizzie Borden took an axe, gave her mother 40 whacks. Or did she? Although acquitted for the murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River in 1892 the court of public opinion was far different. Lizzie Borden's story is fascinating and goes far beyond the double-murder trial. The epic 2019 Road Trip continues with a stop at the home of The Office Scranton, Pennsylvania. Although it's known by so many as the backdrop for the popular TV show there is more to see there than just Dunder Mifflin sites. We go Back In the Day to the fun that was had collecting baseball cards.

A crime that still captures the American imagination. Queerphobia, sexism, class struggle, the industrial revolution...it's all ready to be unpacked.
It's a hat trick, ladies and gentlemen! Our third official episode is live! This week, we discuss the Robert Rodriguez cult classic, The Faculty. Rodriguez was right off his smash hits El Mariachi, Desperado, and From Dusk Till Dawn. This was also in that sweet spot before he launched the much maligned Spy Kids trilogy. We review the parallels to The Breakfast Club, address each and every sci fi homage in the movie (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Puppet Master, Men in Black, The Thing, Alien, etc.), and we rank the film in comparison to our prior episodes. Casey Connor is played by a pre-Lord of the Rings, post-The Good Son, Elijah Wood. Wood has some serious horror credentials, having starred in Cooties, Maniac, and Come to Daddy. Perhaps the most horror-credentialed actor in the film, Clea DuVall, plays Stokes. She went on to be in Ghosts of Mars, The Grudge, Zodiac, Identity, American Horror Story, Lizzie Borden Took an Axe, and The Astronaut's Wife. Josh Hartnett was all the rage in the late 90's and early 2000s. He starred in 30 Days of Night, The Black Dahlia, and Halloween: H20. Jordana Brewster plays Delilah Profitt. We can't tell if that is a pun with prophet, as she is an aspiring reporter, or profit because she will stop at nothing for the story. Brewster later starred in the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre., before selling her soul to the Fast & Furious franchise Piper Laurie, who played Margaret White in Carrie, has some tremendous moments in the film. Robert Patrick, of T2: Judgment Day fame, puts his steely gaze (pun intended) to good use as the coach of the football team, which in this small town where the pigskin is God, makes him a Patron Saint. Famke Janssen (X-Men, Goldeneye, Lord of Illusions) plays the piteous Miss Burke, who becomes a bold and empowered woman, albeit with a severed-head crawling across the pavement. It was really amazing how the guys actually knew about Lizzie Borden history. Probably for the best as the time was spent mostly looking at Christina Ricci and… well you know… boy stuff. This week the guys sat down for a viewing of their first Lifetime Movie: Lizzy Borden Took an Ax. This film stars Christina Ricci, Clea DuVall, Gregg […]
One of the most notorious crimes in American history was memorialized in a grisly playground chant — Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty whacks. And when she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one. The Borden family home, the scene of the crime in 1892, is now a bed and breakfast — not for the faint of heart — in Fall River, Massachusetts.
During an oppressive heat wave in August 1892, prominent Fall River residents Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered in their home; each dealt multiple and savage blows to their heads with a hatchet. Were they killed by Andrew's strange, thirty-two year-old daughter? A lot of evidence points to her being the killer. But, she was acquitted. I for one, think Lizzie was probably guilty. Their youngest daughter Lizzie was accused of the murder and tried for it, but did she really do it? Join The Lady Dicks as they dic-tect the murder of Abby and Andrew Borden. We are well into Shocktober and what makes a better Halloween story than real murder, so we watched Lizzie Borden Took an Axe starring Christina Ricci. We finally found a movie we really liked. Only took 5 months but we did it. We learn why pears are the least convincing fruit and dig deeper into Michelle's true crime obsession.
Though this is technically our 4th episode, it’s actually only the second episode we ever recorded.
