Buffalo's Common Council has tabled a request from Bottoms Up for a special permit for 18+ college nights. Planning Board Chair James Morrell gives his take on the issues facing Chippewa.

The land just across Minnesota's border with Ontario, Canada, looks a lot like northern Minnesota. It has a similar landscape of remote forest, water, and, right now, wildfire. There are more than 100 fires burning in Ontario and they've destroyed two First Nations communities, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Others have had to evacuate, including the Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation, which has ties to the nearby Bois Forte Band of Chippewa in Minnesota. Many evacuees are staying in Thunder Bay, where local organizations are working to support them. To learn more, MPR News host Nina Moini spoke with Cora McGuire-Cyrette, a member of the Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation and CEO of the Ontario Native Women's Association. For the last couple weeks, her organization has shifted focus to helping people displaced by wildfires.

Day one had Jordan grinding as a Boater alongside a solid fishing partner that he didn't know he was gonna have in the boat until that morning, but the real story? That Evinrude. You know the one. The one that drops RPM on pad, shuts off, fires back up, shuts off again, and then — after enough cycles of rage-fueled troubleshooting — just decides it's done with you. Completely done. Won't start. Won't even pretend to cooperate. It's the kind of motor drama that'll test your patience faster than a full moon bite. But here's the thing: fishing is still fishing, and fun found a way in anyway. Day two brought an unexpected turn when Jordan, fishing as a non-boater, got in the Triton with Brian Beebe, and that's where the energy shifted. Fresh perspective, different approach, and a reminder that sometimes the best derby moments aren't about dominating the leaderboard — they're about who's sitting next to you and what you're learning together.

Each creative story is brilliantly told through Erdrich's wide range of compelling characters and illustrated by Aza Erdrich Abe, Louise's daughter and long-time book cover artist. Opening ceremonies for the statewide Native Youth Olympic (NYO) games got underway at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage, Alaska Thursday. This year's NYO coordinator, Brittany Vo, says it is impressive to watch the procession of 400 athletes from across Alaska enter the stadium, as they carry homemade banners that represent their schools and communities. “It's just so exciting to have so much representation in one room, which I think is really powerful to see how one event can bring us all together.” Over the next two days, thousands of people will come to watch traditional Native games like the Alaskan High Kick, the Seal Hop, and Stick Pull – tests of skill, strength, and endurance, Vo says, that are rooted in survival off the land. “It's really important to me, because as a youth, I didn't always feel like pride in my culture. And the fact that these students come and they're proud to do these games is really important for self-esteem and confidence.” This year marks the 40th year that the Cook Inlet Tribal Council has hosted NYO. Since then, the games have continued to grow. Today, teams from more than 100 Alaska communities take part. The deadline to comment has passed on a Trump administration proposal that could roll back a two-decade ban on oil and gas drilling around a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within seven days, more than 70,000 comments were gathered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio has more on potential changes for public lands surrounding Chaco Canyon. The BLM wants to repeal a Biden-era 10-mile buffer zone of more than 336,000 acres. Rich in oil and gas, some 40,000 wells already dot the Greater Chaco Landscape. “What we are fighting for is the last, right now, unleased federal lands.” Marissa Naranjo is from the Santa Clara Pueblo. She is with the New Mexico nonprofit Sovereign Energy. “Even when tribes lead, engage and help shape the process over many years, you know at this point, there's no guarantee that those outcomes will be respected, as we're seeing by the seven-day public comment. It could set the tone for how sacred sites and public lands are treated nationwide.” The mineral leasing withdrawal in 2023 followed a 150-day comment period. After a year of working for the U.S. Department of the Interior, Scott Davis has stepped down from his role as deputy assistant secretary of Indian Affairs (ASIA). As Brian Bull of Buffalo's Fire reports, Davis is now back in North Dakota and the private sector. Davis is a citizen of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe with Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa heritage. He has long been a familiar face across North Dakota, having served as the executive director of the state's Indian Affairs Commission from 2009 to 2021. It was in that capacity that he became friends with Doug Burgum, then governor of North Dakota. When Burgum was confirmed as the 55th U.S. Secretary of the Interior last year, he tapped Davis to join his staff. Davis confesses he was hesitant. “You know when things started getting really busy, and not enough people power in the ASIA Hallway, I said I would help him get things set up, and whether that was a year, two years. But it wasn't solely intended by no means, it was never my goal to be working in government, but sometimes that's where the Creator puts you.” Davis said he is proud to have met with 400 tribes and addressed red tape, natural resources development, and probate while in federal office. He will go back to his consulting and lobbying firm, Tatanka Consulting, which he founded in 2023. He will also spend more time with his family. The words “Sioux”, “Chippewa”, and “Crow” are some of the well-known names in the official lexicon that identify tribes, but they are also among the monikers that arise from mispronunciations, errant assumptions, and even derogatory terms by outsiders that found their way into conventional use. Over the years, some tribes have undertaken the arduous process to change their official names to take back what they have always called themselves. Others simply change how they present their names to the public, without updating the official record. We'll talk with representatives from tribes who seek to have their names better reflect their own culture and language. The Seneca Nation in New York is working to correct longstanding confusion over law enforcement on their land. A nearly 80-year-old federal statute handed the state control over certain crimes on Seneca Nation’s territory. A bill in Congress could chart a path to resolving that conflict. In Oklahoma, a Muscogee Nation citizen argues that those who work and live on the tribal land do not have to pay state income taxes. That argument could now be headed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The issue comes nearly six years after the landmark McGirt v. Oklahoma Supreme Court decision that confirmed Muscogee authority over criminal matters on tribal land. This current battle would extend that authority to civil cases. And the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe tribe in Wisconsin is facing off with U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi over outside access to a road that traverses tribal land. Bondi backs an effort to force the tribe to reimburse a nearby town for fees to access the road. We'll find out the potential implications of these cases. GUESTS J.C. This week on Chatting Chippewas, with the MAC Championships this weekend, Adam caught up with second year wrestling head coach, Ben Bennett. The two talked about Ben wrestling at Central Michigan and his career before he turned into a coach. They chat about him being a 4-time All-American and what it'll take for his Chippewas to win a MAC title. Finally, the two get on the mat and Ben shows Adam some wrestling moves. 

Today, Leah speaks with David Amitrano, the owner of Midwest All-Star Wrestling, a Minnesota-based, Native-owned independent wrestling organization in Woodbury. He is originally from Ely, Minnesota and is a citizen of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa. He and wife Brittney have four kids at home. He got into wrestling as the CFO of Women of Nations, a women and children's domestic violence and sexual assault shelter. He's been there for over a decade. It's a 44-bed shelter for Native women and children but also women and children of all nations. It was founded in 1982. Located in St. Paul, it is one of the largest shelters of its kind not on reservation land.  In 2017, David was at work when he got a call from Jesse Ventura. He had seen a video about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The shelter had been mentioned in the program. Jesse suggested doing a fundraiser and put him in contact with an owner of Midwest All Star Wrestling. David didn't know much about wrestling at the time, but they held their first wrestling fundraiser at the American Indian Center in 2017. It was a success and ever since they've done it every year. After the fundraiser, he became an owner of Midwest All-Star Wrestling, which distinguishes itself as one of the organizations to highlight women's wrestling. His daughter is a huge wrestling fan. And one day she said, "How come there are no girl wrestlers?" Before he left office, President Joe Biden came to Arizona and formally apologized for the federal government's role in running boarding schools designed to forcibly assimilate Indigenous children. As KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio reports, Biden's words still carry meaning as one group continues fulfilling a promise from his administration. “Children would arrive [at] school, clothes taken off – their hair that they were told was sacred was chopped off. Their names [were] literally erased, replaced by a number or an English name.” At least 526 facilities were built nationwide and resulted in more than 3,000 deaths. “The pain it has caused will always be a significant mark of shame, a blot on American history.” An enduring pain Deb Haaland, Biden's Interior secretary and the daughter of a boarding school survivor, began trying to heal. “For decades, this terrible chapter was hidden from our history books, but now our administration's work will ensure that no one will ever forget.” More than a year later, healing continues within the Gila River Indian Community. “It feels like just yesterday that we were doing our opening, and we were standing up here and telling you how we were going to make this week be a safe space for you.” That's Lacey Kinnart (Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians) with the nonprofit National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition. Their group came to Gila River as part of a national tour collecting boarding school testimonials. They aim to document 400 survivors by the end of the tour. Each video recording will be accessible through the Library of Congress. “One of my favorite things about this work that we do is being able to see healing happening right in front of our eyes.” Charlee Brissette is an oral history program co-director and from the same tribe as Kinnart. “We don't say that we're the healers, but we offer space for healing to happen. By the end of the week too, a lot of our relatives that have shared their story with us come back, because they're like family now.” Like boarding school survivor Ramona Klein, who is from the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota and sits on the nonprofit's board. “I know what it was like for me, so I'm hoping it was kind of like that for them, because there's a relief.” Their intimate project involves a lot of aftercare, with the nonprofit remaining mindful of mental health. “Each survivor will be contacted by the person who interviewed them in the next week or so, and then we continue to follow up for the next year. In addition to that, we offer a healing circle that's virtual. We want to be very cognizant that we don't open up wounds and hurt people.” The National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition will stop in Denver, Colo. Sharice Davids (Ho-Chunk/D-KS) reintroduced this week the Native American Entrepreneurial Opportunity Act to strengthen the Small Business Administration's Office of Native American Affairs, and expand support for Native entrepreneurs. Speaking on the House floor, Rep. Davids said Native entrepreneurs face unnecessary barriers to accessing the tools and resources they need to grow, create jobs, and compete. She says the bill strengthens programs so they can better meet those needs.
