When Cecilly Routman discovered that most of her Jewish kinswomen supported abortion, she was shocked...and became an advocate for the unborn. She quotes Moses ben Maimon...“It is important to not believe everything you think. People idolize their intellect. Especially intelligent people…educated people, people who spent a lot of time in higher education. Or come out of families where that is important…look at how we think and question what our views are...we are very wedded to them…unfortunately we are human, and the mind can be bent, distorted and warped.” Paraphrased from The Guide For The Perplexed. This is an extraordinary episode as one women questions why her people could think such a thing, and fights to save every Jewish child. One World in a New World with Tony Michaelides - Author, Keynote Speaker, Music Industry Executive Diving into the depths with Tony started off with the recognition that when you're dealing with the band mates (U2, Bowie and others just starting out), radio and record label executives... it's like a rollercoaster ride. You'll love the stories he shares from the perspective of being there. Asked about coincidence, synchronicities and serendipitous moments and how life reflects our connection to it, he unabashedly offers graciousness and humility in the conversations and interactions just seemed to be the natural extension of what he'd learn young. Tony speaks about watching David Bowie while he was working with him on the road and the graciousness and humility he had. The details are worth checking out. It's a real behind-the-scenes story. Have you been in a position in your life where everything seems to be falling apart around you, yet you've done nothing wrong? Tony's sharing of how that caused his own re-direction and restructuring through competition and new technology. He makes distinctions between the 70s and musicians making statements that weren't censored and now that same kind of activity gets your act pulled. He says he's not a business man, per se, yet his expertise parallels the best. You'll enjoy the examples. Younger generations, and even older ones, would be wise to listen in to the ways we can achieve success and enjoy what we're doing at the same time. That is often not the case. He shares examples of having zest and desire, passion and purpose, cooperation and collaboration, creativity and innovation. We talk about attitude being more important than skillset and dive into various comparisons between a real-world learning and going to school. Life is its own school. We finally arrive at talking about how musicians are affected by listening, learning, and exploring each other and becoming a better musician through the activity of jamming with others who wanted to be their best as well. You'll find listening in and joining our journey will enrich your life in some way. Tony Michaelides has been described as a walking, talking, encyclopaedia of music. He's been described that way for good reason, because he's worked with everyone from David Bowie, to New Order to Take That.  Tony worked in promotions and as a consultant in the music industry.  He's also very well known in Manchester for his time at Piccadilly Radio, where his nickname was “Tony the Greek”.   He describes himself as “an adopted yank, but always a Manc”.  He now lives in the United States after the US government granted him a green card for services to music and the arts.  In this episode, you'll hear some fantastic stories taken from his book “Moments That Rock”, about everyone from the Happy Mondays, to U2, Simply Red, James and the Stone Roses.    ================================== Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre.  From that point, the business, and its team members, have been involved in helping to support the creation of Modern Manchester – across regeneration, business, charity, leisure and hospitality, sport and culture. To celebrate the 26 years that Roland Dransfield has spent creating these bonds, Lisa is gathering together some of her Greater Mancunian ‘family' and will be exploring how they have created their own purposeful relationships with the best place in the world. While Your Mindset Shifts Over Time, Your Purpose May Not Sometimes in life we will all have moments where we think to ourselves, “Is this really who I want to be? Is this how I want my story to impact others?” and we either wonder or plan for the next steps in becoming the person we want to be.  In this episode Sarah Elkins and her guest Tony Michaelides, an accomplished Author and former Music Industry Executive, discuss the importance of being authentic in your stories and how they influence your audience in a way that is for the better instead of being outrageous and telling your stories for the glory of having a legacy. Highlights It's okay to be lousy when you first try something. In order to pursue your dreams you have to be willing to be uncomfortable in order to learn what you need to do. How many people can you benefit by being your authentic self? The influence of being insistent on personal growth. Show appreciation for the road life has lead you on. Quotes Be true to yourself, don't find yourself being lead down a road of uncertainty. There comes a time in your life when you stand back and say "what about me?" and that's not being selfish towards others, that's just putting yourself in the mix.  We can be heroes if just for today. Featured in this podcast: Moments that Rock Podcast Insights from the Engine Room Book  About Tony Michaelides (from his website): Having spent thirty plus years in the music industry and working with some of the world's leading artists I could see that big changes were about to happen. It was clearly time for me to make a change too so after being labelled an “Alien of Extraordinary Ability” for services to the music and arts I was awarded a green card, packed my bags and headed out to America for the next part of my journey. As I began writing my first book it dawned on me that I had learned a lot from both the artists I had worked with together with the people I like to call ‘music industry insiders.' I started to take ‘The Lessons Learned from Rock and Roll' out on to the road and to numerous events internationally. As I was writing my second book, ‘Moments That Rock' I decided to keep the lessons separate and to release them as a series of E Books and Audio books. My ‘Moments That Rock' became a storytelling podcast and a new dawn beckoned. If I can no longer do what I did then why not talk about it? The Lessons Learned from Rock and Roll is not exclusive and can be applied to anyone. It opens people's eyes in to what it takes to be a real Rock Star. ABOUT SARAH: "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Show notes by Chinook Bromlie - Estey

Wow. So Tony and I go on a tear through our shared history and abiding love of music. He's from Manchester, UK, and he was intricately involved with the music scene there, starting with selling records out os his van, going upstairs at Virgin Rags (an early precursor to the Virgin records empire), following local acts like U2 and wrapped in the David Bowie phenomenon early on. We both see the possibility of a return to more local music, a move away from the domination of accounting and the blossoming of community-through-music, a landscape that encourages and provides venues for original artists who actually create music rather than layer lyrics on top of other people's samples. Along the way, we have quite a time, as both of us have developed intimately within the company of music.

This has allowed me the opportunity to share the experiences and the moments that rocked my world with others in both corporate America and as a philanthropist involving myself in fundraising events that are making a difference to the world. https://www.linkedin.com/in/tonymichaelides/

00:00 - Hi it's Brett, I'm back from vacation. Yay. In this first segment, we set up the show, particularly our chat at 2 o'clock about cyclists. Global News has learned cycling fatalities often end with a fine, rather than jail time, for drivers who are deemed at fault. 9:48 - On Friday we are off to a Kindergarten graduation. Seems adorable and a little silly all at once. We will talk about this and engineered achievements as we get closer to Friday. As your kids pass into a new grade, the rumours will abound about "how much homework does this teacher give?" And on the subject of homework, studies are increasingly showing that assigned homework is not necessarily a benefit to students in early and middle years. 17:27 - What should we do with The Bay building downtown? What COULD we do with it? There was a great article from Dan Lett in the Winnipeg Free Press over the weekend, and one of the architects featured and tasked with finding alternate uses is Aaron Pollock, who is our guest. Aaron is a Design Intern with number TEN architectural group. 35:39 - More on the Global News investigation into cycling fatalities, which often don't lead to jail time for drivers who are found at fault. Our guest is Jamie Hilland, manager of the Active and Safe Routes to School Program with Green Action Centre. 53:18 - "U2 on the Inside" - Get all you need to know about the band from the man who promoted them, Tony Michaelides. He tells us about his book "Insights from the Engine Room". 73:30 - Winnipeg Thunder follow-up -- I went to Oak + Oar on Saturday morning to pick up a Thunder hat & t-shirt, and my mind was appropriately blown. The owner & founder of Oak + Oar, Chris Watchorn, joins us again to tell us how they did with sales. Are the Winnipeg FURY next? ALSO, Greg tells a great story about his run-in with a Winnipeg mascot. 85:52 - The trip down Memory Lane continues... remember the Winnipeg Whips? How about the Cyclone? Then, Snake Oil Gets Twisted giveaway. 92:40 - Julie Buckingham tees up THE NEWS
