On January 1, 1994, masked indigenous rebels burst from the rainforest in Chiapas, Mexico to launch an uprising that was years in the making.  The Zapatista Army declared war on the Mexican Government demanding basics rights for the diverse Mayan communities who lived in extreme poverty through out the region.  The rebellion, which captured the world's attention thanks in part to the Zapatista's charismatic leader, coincided with the enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement and was disastrous for Mexican President Carlos Salinas who had promised his trade partners that Mexico was a modern, peaceful democratic country. Interview with retired San Diego Police Department Sergeant Detective David ContrerasYears of Service: 1985-2015Born in Tijuana, Mexico, David came to the United States and, as a young child, knew he wanted to become a police officer. As David explains, he always had a sheepdog mentality and was always looking to defend the weaker kids who were getting picked on by bullies and saw law enforcement as a way to protect others who were being preyed upon.As a young man, David became the founder and Executive Director of the New Life Rehabilitation Center for drug addicts and hardcore gang members. David explains that it was here that he learned his communication skills and began his education in how to deal with gang members and drug addicts and developed a philosophy to never believe anyone without first looking into the facts.David was later hired as a corrections officer, where he worked with maximum security inmates and developed expertise in gangs, and furthered his street education in dealing with people from all walks of life.At 28 years old, David was recruited by a mentor to the San Diego Police Department, where he began a long and storied career. With 8 months on patrol, David talks about what it was like working in San Diego in heavy crime and gang-ridden areas and tells the story of purchasing drugs in full uniform.Throughout his career, David worked in the gang unit, internal affairs, narcotics, community relations and was the assistant to the chief of police. Most importantly, David worked for the Criminal Intelligence Unit which worked as the Mexican Liaison group, working directly with the Mexican Government on crimes such as rape, robbery, narcotics, and murder. The CIU unit worked in Mexico, where David and his team often found themselves searching for suspects from the United States hiding in Mexico.David is the co-author of the book “When the Music Stops! The Pain Begins” which discusses the troubles law enforcement officers have reintegrating into society after a career in policing.David is also working on his second book about active shooters, their mentality, and the after-effects.Finally, David is the co-host of three podcasts. The Grey Line The Story Behind the Blue Line where he and his co-hosts talk to various guests about law enforcement as well as suspects they dealt with, as well as the spin-off podcast called Ash Wednesday, where they discuss numerous topics. The Mexican government is bringing treason charges against Joaquín Guzmán López, son of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, not for his involvement in drug trafficking, but for allegedly kidnapping Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a senior leader of a rival faction within the Sinaloa Cartel. Guzmán López is accused of forcibly bringing Zambada onto a plane and flying him to the United States, where Zambada was detained by U.S. authorities. The charge of treason stems from a specific article in Mexico's criminal code that defines treason as the illegal abduction of a person within Mexico to hand them over to foreign authorities. This legal provision was notably influenced by historical events, such as the abduction of a Mexican doctor involved in the 1985 torture and murder of DEA agent Kiki Camarena. The Mexican government views the act of delivering a high-ranking cartel leader to a foreign government as a severe breach of national sovereignty, hence the treason charge. The recent arrest of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a key leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, has thrown Mexico's political and criminal landscapes into turmoil. Zambada's capture, which took place on July 25, 2024, in El Paso, Texas, has led to widespread speculation and controversy, particularly due to a letter he released claiming that he was kidnapped rather than voluntarily surrendering. Zambada's letter implicates several high-profile figures, including Rubén Rocha Moya, the Governor of Sinaloa, and Héctor Melesio Cuén, a prominent politician who was recently murdered.Zambada's letter suggests that he was ambushed when he believed he was meeting with Rocha Moya and Cuén, further complicating the situation. Governor Rocha Moya has strongly denied any involvement in Zambada's capture, insisting that he was not at the meeting and had no ties to the criminal activities in question. The governor's alibi—that he was on vacation at the time of Zambada's arrest—has drawn criticism, particularly given the timing of Cuén's murder, which some believe is linked to the cartel's internal conflicts.President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has expressed support for Rocha Moya, urging caution and emphasizing the need for further investigation before drawing conclusions. However, the situation remains highly volatile, with ongoing speculation about Rocha Moya's potential connections to the cartel and the broader implications for the Mexican government. This controversy is not just about the capture of a cartel leader; it also reflects deep-seated issues of corruption and political manipulation within Mexico, particularly in Sinaloa, where cartel influence is pervasive. The recent arrest of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a key leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, has indeed triggered significant turmoil within the Mexican government. Zambada, who had evaded capture for decades, was arrested on July 25, 2024, near El Paso, Texas, by U.S. authorities. His arrest was part of a larger operation that also led to the capture of Joaquín Guzmán López, a son of the notorious drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.Impact on the Mexican Government:Allegations of Corruption and Treason:The circumstances surrounding Zambada's arrest have sparked controversy, especially given his claim that he was kidnapped and forcibly taken to the U.S. by individuals he trusted within Mexico. These allegations have prompted Mexican prosecutors to consider treason charges against those who may have been complicit in his capture. This situation exposes the deep-seated corruption and complicity between cartel leaders and certain elements within the Mexican government.Political Fallout:Zambada's arrest has led to political fallout, with accusations flying across various levels of government. The event has placed significant pressure on Mexico's ruling party and local officials in Sinaloa, raising questions about their involvement or knowledge of the operation. This has resulted in a climate of distrust and further strained relations between Mexican and U.S. authorities.Instability and Violence:The arrest has also heightened fears of retaliatory violence from the Sinaloa Cartel, as such high-profile arrests often lead to increased violence, both internally within the cartel and against government forces. Zambada's influence within the cartel was considerable, and his removal from power could lead to a power struggle among remaining leaders, potentially destabilizing the region further. This arrest represents a major development in the ongoing battle against drug cartels, but it also highlights the complex and often murky relationship between organized crime and government institutions in Mexico.(commercial at 11:07)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:The letter from ‘El Mayo' Zambada that widens the scandal in Mexico: A murder, a capture and a secret meeting | International | EL PAÍS English (elpais.com)

The CJNG, led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as "El Mencho," has been known for its brutal and innovative methods of exerting control and influence. The cartel's shift to using drones equipped with explosives represents a strategic evolution aimed at maintaining and expanding their dominance in the drug trade and other illicit activities. The use of drones by the CJNG was first reported a few years ago, primarily for surveillance purposes. However, recent reports indicate a more sophisticated approach, where drones are now being fitted with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and used in offensive operations. These drone attacks have been employed in various regions, targeting rival cartel members, military convoys, police stations, and other strategic locations.Specific IncidentsMichoacán and Guanajuato: These states have seen significant drone activity by the CJNG. In Michoacán, drones have been used to drop bombs on local police and rival cartel strongholds, causing casualties and significant damage.Jalisco: The cartel's home state has also experienced drone attacks, including assaults on government buildings and security forces.Guerrero: In this state, drones have been used to target community police forces, who often oppose cartel activities. The use of drone-delivered bombs has posed new challenges for Mexican security forces. Traditional counterinsurgency tactics are less effective against these airborne threats. The Mexican government has had to adapt, investing in anti-drone technology and training to counter this new form of warfare. Despite these efforts, the adaptability and innovation of the CJNG continue to complicate law enforcement and military responses. The CJNG's use of drones demonstrates their ability to acquire and utilize advanced technology. These drones are often commercially available models modified to carry and drop explosive payloads. The modifications require a certain level of technical expertise, indicating the cartel's capability to recruit or train individuals with the necessary skills. The use of drone-delivered bombs by the CJNG also has international implications. It sets a precedent for other criminal organizations globally, potentially leading to an arms race in cartel warfare technology. Moreover, the origins of the drones and explosive materials often point to international smuggling routes, implicating global networks in the supply chain. In response to the growing threat, the Mexican government has been increasing its focus on technological countermeasures. Before I get started, just a quick reminder that I have 3 audiobooks based on this series. You can find information about them at my  website https://arctx.org. On the menu, under Digital Products -> Audiobooks. Check them out, thanks, Now back to the Cherokee. Ever since Europeans had landed on the continent, the Cherokee had done their best to coexist. Unfortunately, their desire to live in peace on their ancestral lands conflicted with the new settlers desire to own that same land. As a result, they were forced off their land and as I mentioned in the last episode they arrived in what is now East Texas where they lived in relative peace for a few years. They did their best to maintain neutrality when conflict started between the Anglo Texans and the Mexican Government. After Texas achieved independence in 1836, Texas Republic President Sam Houston was a strong advocate for peace with all Texas tribes. He spent many hours working to keep the Cherokees as allies as he tried to negotiate treaties with the Apache, Comanche, and the Kiowa. This even included the Cherokees agreeing in 1836 to send a company of 25 rangers to help patrol the land west of their settlements. In 1837 Cherokee leader Duwali agreed to be the republic's emissary to the Comanches. However, in 1838 relations began to fall apart after a raid on settlers in East Texas was blamed on a combined Cherokee and Mexican force. As he was getting ready to leave office, Houston once again tried to keep the peace between Texans and the Cherokees. He established a boundary that could have served as a boundary separating the groups. This line upset the Anglos who wanted the land and who believed the Cherokees were actually allies of the Mexicans. Mirabeau B. Lamar who took Houston's place as Republic President was an ardent foe of the Cherokees and wanted them completely out of Texas. He initiated his campaign of elimination by sending troops to the Neches Saline (a small community in East Texas). When Chief Duwali had his people block the Texans and in response Lamar told the chief that the Cherokee would be relocated beyond the red river. His words to the chief were, "peaceably if they would; forcibly if they must." Lamar then put together a commission who were told they could compensate the Cherokees if they left their land.  The Cherokees said no, and the result was what is known as the Cherokee War. The war, although it was really more of a pitched battle took place in the summer of 1839. That was when Chief Duwali led several hundred of his warriors in a fight that took place near present day Tyler Texas. The result was a disaster for the Cherokee as more than a 100 warriors including the chief were killed. The Texans then drove the remaining Cherokees across the Red River into what was then labeled Indian Territory. Not all Cherokee were exiled to the territory, some stayed and lived as fugitives in Texas and still others moved into Mexico. There were some Cherokee who conducted raids and fought for their lands, but they had little to no success. In 1841 Sam Houston was elected to another term as president and he instituted a policy that he thought would help end future hostilities between the tribes and the settlers. This policy gave two  treaties with the Cherokees who remained in Texas in 1843 and 1844. After the Cherokees who had been moved north of the Red River they were able to reunite with the much larger group of Cherokee who had been settled in the northeastern corner of the territory. In 1846, the Cherokee signed an agreement with the U.S. that specified that all the Cherokee, those from Texas and those who were already in the Territory had equal rights to the  lands of the Cherokee nation. This union lasted until the Civil War.

Great to bring you Episode #92 Pepe Tiburon: "Tren Maya - A Disaster in the Making". Big thanks to all of you and also to our brilliant sponsor XDEEP. Your support makes this podcast possible. Many of you will be aware of the environmental issues and development pressures experienced on the Yucatan peninsula in the area spanning from Cancun to Tulum. This area encompasses the largest cave systems in the world, many of which are also of huge archaeological and environmental significance, playing home to rare species of flora and fauna, Mayan artefacts, and geological features dating back millions of years. On top of that, the caves are aquifers that carry the water supply for all life in the region. Development pressures and the lack of adequate development controls have already damaged the region recently the Mexican Government's plan to build a train loop from Cancun to Tulum directly through the pristine jungle and above the precious caves of the region has caused huge concern and opposition. Known as Tren Maya, the train was originally planned to run along the highway meaning its impact would be manageable however, following opposition from the hotel industry, the Government decided to move the train 7km inland through the jungle and yes directly over some of the best-flooded caves on the planet. All cave divers should be concerned about this but more than that, the loss of jungle habitat, endangered species, and the ongoing and increasing damage to the water supply should worry us all. I have covered this topic in other episodes notably EP #36 Somos Los Cenotes with Phillip Lehmann, Natalie and Vince of Under the Jungle and also with Alessandra Figari #77 and Robbie Schmittner #85 but when Stratis Kas provided an introduction to Jose Urbina Bravo or Pepe Tiburon as he is known I took the opportunity to meet and find out more. In this episode, Pepe takes us through the background and history of Tren Maya and then describes the issues and terrible outcomes likely if this project is allowed to continue. He speaks not only of the damage caused by the Tren Maya project itself but also of the "Cancer" that will result in terms of additional development surrounding the train and environmental damage in these last remaining pristine jungle regions of Mexico. Pepe updates us on his progress including winning a legal injunction to stop the project before this was overridden by the Government. He talks of the ongoing battle to oppose the project and his recent trip to Mexico City to meet with the Government face-to-face. But Pepe also provides balance to the discussions with ways in which development might occur in the region where technology and modern techniques might both reverse current issues and allow for responsible development in the future. Lastly Pepe shares with us ways in which all of us who love this region and care about the environment might assist and support the fight to oppose the Tren Maya project in its current form. So sit back and join me with Pepe Tiburon in this episode of… Speaking Sidemount. Watch a video of Pepe showing the damage.

Nightmares of the Americas: Indigenous Tales

Welcome back for Part 2 of Alcatraz. In this episode of Nightmares of the Americas: Indigenous Tales, we discovered a haunting chapter of history that many have yet to hear.  Join us as we further explore the history of the island of Alcatraz. We jump right in with the Spanish losing control to the newly founded Mexican Government. However, their control didn't last very long. After a few years the Mexican government ceded California to the US Government in the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. They used the island for you guessed it another Fort, and later on a military prison. However, right before the end of the 1800s the US was still "dealing with the Indian Problem". They decided to create boarding schools to send "Indian" children too in hopes of destroying the family dynamic.  Many families resisted and it resulted in arrests . 19 Hopi men who defied the oppressive system of Indian boarding school ended up on the island of Alcatraz as prisoners. Lastly, before we leave we go over how the infamous Federal Prison came to be. We also go over the layout of the prison including the "Hole". A place where nightmares come to life, and even the most violent criminals are brought to their knees.  So sit back and enjoy the second part of our Alcatraz series.  Merch store- https://indigenoustales.threadless.com/Email us at info@behillnetwork.com Also check out our Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/indigenous_tales/And our TikTok -https://www.tiktok.com/@indigenous_talesAmanda Bland Dallas area Bakeryinstagram - https://www.instagram.com/cupidsweetsbakes/Cupid Sweets- https://www.facebook.com/cupidsweets

John Harwood from CNN decided to promote a statement he made almost a year ago in defense of Joe Biden's Satanic Speech. He did this because John Harwood has determined that it is a “threat to our ‘democracy'” to NOT ALLOW insurrections against legitimate legislative business. In honor of Harwood's buffoonery, we go on a hunt today to see if we can somehow find the ACTUAL threats to our Republic, with the Text of the Declaration of Independence as our guide. Is it a threat to our Republic CBS News's senior political analyst explains Republicans MADE the people in Tennessee who work with a mob that physically battled with cops to get into the legislative chamber and then seized the floor and stopped the business of the people because Republicans were supposed to give them what they screamed to have?Is it a threat to our Republic that the Democrats found a way to do a Watergate Burglary against Trump, at the orders of the people who run Joe Biden as has now been proven beyond any doubt? Maybe it's a threat to our Republic that the charges The Party is using against Trump in NY have already gone pas the Statute of Limitations? Is a clearly senile, blatantly corrupt man being a figurehead leader while the real bosses of government get to operare in the shadows a threat? So, today we play a game: let's find the threats to our Republic. What does God say? The Bible has much to say about wicked rulers. See how many match what we see today. God is not mocked, He is in charge and has already won. John Hardwood from CNN: “the threat to democracy TN has dramatized today comes from a minority of Americans - disproportionately white, male, conservative Christians - terrified of losing power and status in a changing country, the desperation of their efforts may make them lose power and status faster.CBS Warns TN Republicans Left Dems No Choice But to Get ViolentAmerican Legal Foundation: Records obtained from our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Mar-a-Lago raid further confirm that the FBI obtained access to these records through a “special access request” from the Biden White House on behalf of the DOJ.Yes, The Statute Of Limitations Has Passed On Bragg's ‘Get Trump' CaseFLASHBACK, AUGUST 2022: @EricTrump: “Make no mistake… this did not happen without Joe Biden's explicit approval.
