When will all the craziness be over? It's the question that seems to be on every American's mind, and one that many have asked both Russell Moore and George Packer, author and staff writer at The Atlantic. Moore and Packer discuss the exhaustion and rage that have become common in our politics. They discuss partisanship, profitability, and pessimism. They talk about the historical events that have led to our current realities, the effects of secularization on culture, and what it might take for Packer to believe there is a God—and why Packer still, despite all of the chaos, can't forgo his hope for humanity. In this conversation, Dr. Jared Stacy and Jonathan Martin explore misinformation, disinformation and white evangelicalism. Dr. Stacy shares his very personal journey of leaving pastoral work in the wake of seeing his own community embrace propaganda and disinformation in the aftermath of January 6th. In his work as a theologian and ethicist, he has been on a long journey to understand the way white evangelicalism has been hijacked by MAGA ideology. They explore questions of race, power and privilege, and the need for ongoing work of discernment in a digital age.
This week we have a chat with Dr Susannah Crockford about conspiracy theories, Donald Trump, the Qanon Shaman and climate change.
I've talked with journalist and best-selling author, GEORGE PACKER, about 2013's National Book Award-winning The UNWINDING and 2021's LAST BEST HOPE, in which he offers four narratives of America that motivate and divide us. Today our jumping off point will be his current cover story in The Atlantic on Phoenix, Arizona, WHAT WILL BECOME OF AMERICAN CIVILIZATION? Conspiracism and Hyper-partisanship in the Nation's Fastest-growing City. More tour guide than pundit, George chooses the characters and makes the introductions, but the voices in this piece are those of the people of Phoenix.

In this riveting episode of "Some Dare Call It Conspiracy," hosts Neil Sanders and Brent Lee sit down with Otto English to unravel the complex web of political maneuverings, historical misconceptions, and media influences that shape our contemporary world. This insightful conversation delves deep into the layers of influence, from dark money in politics to the perpetuation of historical myths and the rise of political entertainers. The Dark Money Influencing PoliticsOne of the most compelling topics discussed is the concept of "dark money." Large corporations funnel significant amounts of undisclosed funds into politics to steer policies and public opinion in their favor. This clandestine funding mechanism has far-reaching implications, influencing everything from healthcare reforms to deregulation policies. By highlighting this issue, the podcast underscores the urgent need for transparency and accountability in government affairs.Political Entertainers: The Rise of a New ClassThe conversation extends to the rise of political entertainers such as Lawrence Fox, Calvin Robinson, and Ben Shapiro. These figures have capitalized on the merging of entertainment and politics to spread their ideologies. Otto English criticizes this trend, arguing that it undermines serious political discourse and fosters a climate where racist and bigoted statements can be made without consequence. There's a call for regulatory intervention to curb these harmful narratives and restore integrity to political discussions. The Curious Case of Ancestry and MonarchyOtto English then touches upon the fascinating topic of ancestry and its implications. Highlighting how Boris Johnson and David Cameron discovered their royal lineage on the show "Who Do You Think You Are?", he suggests that almost everyone with one European ancestor in the last hundred years likely descends from historical figures like Charlemagne or King John. This revelation serves as a reminder that lineage and ancestry often carry unexpected connections and histories. The Inextricable Link Between History and MediaMedia representations of history can significantly influence public perception. The podcast discusses how movies, such as Oliver Stone's "JFK," perpetuate conspiracy theories and shape historical narratives. Otto English points out that while such films can be entertaining, they can also distort historical facts, creating misconceptions that linger in public consciousness. The Problem with Sudden ElectionsThe hosts delve into the reasons behind a prime minister calling a sudden election. This often perplexing political move may be motivated by a range of factors, from internal party dynamics to personal considerations, such as securing a family break in California. Understanding these underlying motivations can demystify political maneuvers that often seem abrupt and inexplicable to the public.Reflecting on Brexit and Its Ideological RootsA significant portion of the discussion focuses on Brexit and the ideologies driving it. Otto English highlights how Brexit was shaped by a nostalgic longing for a mythical British past and aristocratic interests. The conversation also touches upon the influence of American organizations like the Heritage Foundation on English think tanks, pushing for privatization and wealth accumulation. This ideological cross-pollination has profound implications for the UK's political landscape. The Fetishization of Historical FiguresThe podcast critiques the fetishization of historical figures such as Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy. Otto English argues that this glorification often ignores the complex and multifaceted realities of these individuals. By oversimplifying their legacies, society perpetuates myths that can misinform and mislead.Prince Andrew and the Epstein ScandalThe conversation takes a critical turn as Otto English addresses the scandal involving Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein. He condemns Prince Andrew's friendship with Epstein and the subsequent attempts to justify this relationship. This discussion emphasizes the importance of accountability and ethical behavior, even within the highest echelons of society. The Influence of Farage and the Reform PartyNigel Farage and the Reform Party also come under scrutiny. The hosts explore Farage's media influence and political maneuvers, expressing concerns about his cult-like following and the potential dangers of complacency in politics. Otto English's prediction that Trump might lose the US election, coupled with his ambivalence about Farage's potential win in Clacton, underscores the precarious nature of contemporary politics.ConclusionIn this episode of "Some Dare Call It Conspiracy," the hosts and Otto English offer a thought-provoking exploration of the forces shaping our world. From the shadowy influence of dark money to the distortions of historical narratives and the rise of political entertainers, the discussion provides a nuanced understanding of contemporary political and social issues. This episode serves as a clarion call for greater transparency, accountability, and critical engagement with the forces that govern our lives.

History is a lie agreed upon, and so is the present day when navigating the narratives of the internet's conspiracy crowd. But luckily we have a swathe of talking heads who are here to separate the wheat from the chaff, sift through the bullshit and amplify the white in the white noise. They are here to tell us the truth, no matter how unpalatable, bigoted and fallacious this might seem to reasonable or informed people. In the USA they have entire networks dedicated to distributing this modern day two minutes of hate. It can be highly lucrative to wind up the credulous and furious, and these outlets namely The Daily Wire, OAN, Rebel TV, Turning Point and others do very well and have directed more people to the right wing than a stewardess during a crash landing. These outlets can loosely be described as purveyors of news, in the same way that a dirty protest can loosely be described as an example of elegant home decoration. In the UK we have the propaganda Network GB News and Talk TV. They are very much the Robbie Williams to America's Justin Timberlake in this regard, the Jim Davidson to their Dave Chappelle or the Scunthorpe united to their Dallas Cowboys. Essentially they do the same thing but with wildly different standards of aesthetics and with far less talent, charisma, skill and panache. The main through-line is a mixture of right wing and far right politics and performative outrage deployed through the lens of conspiracy and faux anti government sentiment. But, as I believe Shakespeare once said, there are levels to this shit. If we think of Alex Jones and David Icke as top billing prize fighters slugging it out against the illuminati on a pay per view from Las Vegas, then people like Russel Brand, Laurence Fox and their ilk are a man killing rats with a hammer in a ring of hay-bales in the dimly lit back room of an abandoned warehouse in Kidderminster.

Please be aware, this series will be examining a deadly bombing and we will be discussing details of death and injury. Listener discretion is advised.Examining the Conspiracy Theories Around the Manchester Arena BombingThe 2017 Manchester Arena bombing was a tragic event that left 22 people dead and hundreds more injured. However, in the years since, a number of conspiracy theories have emerged claiming the attack was a hoax. One of the main proponents of this theory is Richard D. Hall, who has produced a book and documentary called "The Night of the Bang" alleging the victims were crisis actors. In this 8-part podcast series, we aim to meticulously examine the claims made by Hall and others, assess the evidence, and uncover the truth behind this divisive event. As content creators, we recognize the responsibility we have to approach these sensitive discussions with great care. The first half of the series will present Hall's arguments and the conspiracy theory in detail. We will then spend the second half deconstructing these claims and determining where the truth lies. This balanced approach is crucial, as conspiracy theories around tragic events can have devastating consequences. We've already seen how these false narratives can fracture communities and lead to the harassment of victims and their families. The recent legal action taken by Manchester Arena survivors Martin and Eve Hibbert against Hall is a landmark case, the first of its kind in the UK against a "disaster troll.”The Hibberts are seeking an injunction to prevent Hall from making similar allegations in the future, as well as damages. Their lawyer has described Hall's actions as "appalling" and hopes this case will set a precedent to better protect survivors of tragedies from such harassment. This issue also highlights the challenges lawmakers and social media platforms face in addressing the spread of disinformation and abuse online. While new legislation like the UK's Online Safety Bill aims to improve user protections, there are still debates over how far such laws can and should go.Ultimately, the Manchester Arena bombing conspiracy theories demonstrate the very real harm that can result when facts are obscured and victims are re-traumatized. As we delve into this complex topic, our goal is to provide a thoughtful, nuanced examination - one that honours the memory of those lost and supports the recovery of the survivors.By rigorously analysing the evidence and ethical implications, we hope to cut through the noise and misinformation, offering listeners a clearer understanding of this tragic event and the importance of responsible journalism in the face of conspiracy theories.Listen to episodes weekly: https://www.somedarecallitconspiracy.com/all-episodes/deep-dives/season-2/manchester-arena-bombing-on-trialFind us on your preferred podcast platform: https://pod.link/1629532988 Listen to all 8 parts of the series now: https://www.patreon.com/somedarecallitconspiracy You have questions? Welcome to our Manchester Arena Bombing On Trial series. On the 22nd of May, 2017, Salman Abedi detonated a bomb in the foyer of the Manchester Arena at the end of an Arianna Grande concert killing 22 people and injuring hundreds more.A conspiracy theory claiming that this bombing was hoaxed and everyone involved was a crisis actor soon became a dominant narrative in the Conspirasphere. One of the main proponents of this theory is Richard D Hall. Over the course of this series we will be examining and deconstructing the claims made by Richard D Hall in his book and documentary "Night Of The Bang" only to discover where the truth lies. As usual, our deep dive series are split into two halves. In the first four episodes we present the conspiracy theory faithfully and with as little judgement as possible. All the while attempting to give our perspective as former believers as to how or why the theory may be believable. In the final four episodes we revisit the theory and provide the often missing context and facts which prove the theory wrong. You have questions? We have answers. Returning guest, Cynane Shay is a nuclear engineer in South Carolina. Her childhood in White Christian Nationalism normalized conspiracy theories like Obama “Birther-ism” and the Biblical apocalypse; but 2020, with COVID and Qanon, finally made her realize something was deeply wrong. Now Cynane is writing a book, “Taking Off the Tinfoil Hat: How Lizard People and Space Lasers Dismantled my Christian Worldview,” to process the deconstruction of her fundamentalist evangelicalism and her propagandistic patriotism. We invited Cynane back to the show to continue discussing the inseparable link between cults, conspiracy theories, and American White Christian Nationalism. In this fascinating and informative follow-up conversation, Cynane delves deeper into the insidious nature of the Christian nationalism that defined her early family life and worldview. In the last few years we have seen a significant rise in the belief of conspiracy theories. From the dismissal of facts as fake news to the full embrace of conspiracy theories by politicians and commentators, we face an uncertain future. Democracy is under attack and our open and free societies are in danger due to a dangerous mind virus. Conspiracism is the new pandemic. In 2003, I fell down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories. For the next 15 years I was an outspoken believer in the New World Order / Illuminati Grand Conspiracy Theory. I was invested in the belief that all bodies of governmental power were merely a facade; that a secret cabal was really running the show. This belief structure was predicated upon a belief that many other mysterious and tragic events like JFK, 9/11, etc… served to further the greater conspiracy. Conspiracy theories in our modern era are like digital folklore; a game of Telephone. We add onto them, changing them in the process and then we infect others with this altered narrative. This belief system became the very core of my life. I lived and breathed it. Not only did I subscribe to these beliefs, but I would eventually spread them onto others. I helped create them and add to the lore through my blogs, music and videos. I made friends from across the world, united for this cause. I even met my partner through this community. I opted out of normal society and chose not to pursue a career, get a mortgage or start a family as I believed the “Secret Cabal” would soon rise up as our overt masters; no longer content to be relegated as secret rulers. I had invested my entire life into this ideology. I was a ‘Truth Activist.' And then in 2018…I walked away from it all. I spent the next three years deconstructing this belief system and figuring out why I fell into it in the first place. In 2021, I witnessed the mainstreaming of conspiracism with the rise of QAnon, COVID and the Jan. 6th insurrection. I saw the real world consequences of these dangerous ideas and I decided that it was time to speak out in the hopes that my story could perhaps convince other conspiracy theorists to leave the rabbit hole behind. —---- Some Dare Call It Conspiracy is produced entirely by Brent Lee and Neil Sanders. In the ‘00s there were three big Conspiracy theory movies on the internet: the 9/11 conspiracy theory film Loose Change, the multi-conspiracy film Zeitgeist, and the illuminati and conspirituality film Esoteric Agenda. Esoteric Agenda is perhaps less famous than the other two, but it was just as impactful for the first generation of internet users who watched videos online. On this episode, we talk about the movie and its creator Ben Stewart. Stewart was the singer/songwriter for an up-and-coming but unsigned band called Hierosonic. While Stewart initially made conspiracy videos to discuss topics in his songs, he soon discovered his YouTube clips were making a bigger impact than his music did. That set him on a path towards becoming a professional conspiracist that stretches to today. He now makes series for the conspirituality streaming network Gaia TV and right wing YouTuber Tim Pool. To help us learn more about Ben Stewart's career arc Travis spoke to one time Hierosonic roadie Steven Wynne. Travis, Liv, and Jake ponder the chicken-and-the-egg problem of the conspiracy theory media industry. What really drives the popularity of online conspiracy theories? Is it suppliers like Ben Stewart? Or does the demand for exciting misinformation create influencers like Ben Stewart? Conspirituality podcast co-host and journalist Matthew Remski returns to the podcast, bringing his ongoing analysis of online cultists, grifters, and conspiritualists to a discussion that relates to the book he co-authored with co-hosts Julian Walker and Derek Beres titled 'Conspirituality: How New Age Conspiracy Theories Became a Health Threat,' forthcoming from Public Affairs/Random House in June. We begin our discussion by delving into what Matthew describes as the “amoral attention economy” and how becoming “professionalized into the cursed news cycle” impacts one's mental health. Matthew has taken it upon himself to jump into the fray of online “disaster spirituality” and the circles of culty health and wellness grifters—a psychologically and emotionally taxing beat to be on. Based on personal experiences he's had, some of which he shares in this interview, along with a deep research background into cultic dynamics and abuse in spiritual movements, Matthew has developed an ability to adeptly spot, analyze, and critique the charismatic, narcissistic, self-aggrandizing public personas that contaminate public discourse. He walks us through the dynamics at play, and provides a material framework for understanding how these figures and ideas become so influential to begin with. Following the threads from the Satanic Panic to QAnon, and from QAnon to anti-wokeness, Matthew identifies a set of motivations and circumstances that sets the stage for moral panics and their destructive consequences. Flat earth beliefs have been spreading alarmingly in recent years. They offer plenty of fodder for punchlines, yes--but they also have ties to more nefarious conspiracy theories like QAnon and to other manifestations of political extremism. As a reporter at the Daily Beast, Kelly Weill has been covering it all. And she has written Off the Edge: Flat Earthers, Conspiracy Culture, and Why People Will Believe Anything, a book that tells the history of flat earthism, relates many stories from and about its current adherents, and traces its connections to other forms of radical belief.David Priess and Weill discussed the genesis of her interest in conspiracies; what drives people toward conspiracy theories; 9/11 trutherism as a "gateway drug" to other conspiracies; the origins of modern flat earth thinking in the 1800s and its links to religious fundamentalism; how flat earth believers took over and ran Zion, Illinois in the early 20th century; different flat earthers' conceptions of what's above, below, and around the ground; how online videos and social media helped drive a rise in flat earthism; what a flat earth conference is like; the negative impact that flat earth beliefs can have on individuals; how flat earth thinking intersects with other manifestations of conspiracism and with political extremism; how to help people who fall prey to conspiracy theories; and more.Chatter is a production of Lawfare and Goat Rodeo. The Left loves labels; they take the place of ideas. You don't like affirmative action? You're a racist. You think Hillary shouldn't run again? You're a sexist. Now, as Will discusses, the newest tactic is: You think COVID came from a lab? You're a conspiracy theorist. You think the border is open? You're a conspiracy theorist. Etc. It's only a matter of time before the Biden document dump gets the same treatment. Republicans can't allow a fear of the “c” word to hold them back from telling for truth.
Germany. Australia. Two stories of conspiracy theorists that paint an evolving picture of a now international dissociative movement. German law enforcement say they uncovered a plot by local sovereign citizens to overthrow the government and install as head of state a descendant of German nobility. To help us make sense of the plot, we are joined by German extremism expert Miro Dittrich. The second story is from Australia, where a 47-year-old prepper named Gareth Train shot and killed three people. Investigations revealed that Train was active on conspiracist sites prior to the killings. Journalist Cameron Wilson from the Australian publication Crikey will join us to discuss the details of the killings, as he discovered a Youtube channel operated by the perpetrators. Vladislav (Vlado) Šolc (pronounced “Schultz”) is a professional psychotherapist and Jungian analyst practicing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Vlado received training from the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago and Charles University in Prague. He is the author of five depth-psychology-oriented books: Psyche, Matrix, Reality; The Father Archetype; In the Name of God—Fanaticism from the Perspective of Depth Psychology; Dark Religion: Fundamentalism from the Perspective of Jungian Psychology and most recently Democracy and Individuation in the Times of Conspiracy Theories. In this episode, Shane and Vlado discuss the psychology behind conspiracism, fundamentalism, and mythologies. Using a Jungian framework, they examine how and why conspiracy theories become powerful psychological tools. Other topics include the religious instinct, the unconscious, morality, individuation, purpose, meaning, and psychological defense mechanisms. To understand the profound rise in conspiracy theories in recent times, Vlado explores how conspiracies function as an unconscious protective mechanism against the inferiority of consciousness and subsequently also inflates the ego. Conspiracy theory adoption is archetypal in nature and parallels mythological structures. The strong resistance of conspiracism to rational correction can be understood by examining how the “Inadequate and noncredible representations of numinous energies in consciousness unwittingly contribute to the creation of structures with notable mythological parallels” (Šolc, 2019). “Thinking is free from the unconscious influence of the Self only to the extent that it is able to recognize and to relate to numinous contents, on one hand, and to withdraw projections from the object, on the other. A symbolic perspective offers a nondismissive understanding of the reasons for strong adherence to conspiracy theories. Exploring conspiracy theories as symbols rather than rational constructs offers more fruitful solutions to our current social problems.” (Šolc, 2019) Get a Copy of Dark Religion: Fundamentalism from the Perspective of Jungian Psychology: https://www.amazon.com/Vlado-Solc/e/B07KGJYKH3 Reference Šolc, V. Fascism is often used by the political left to refer to the political right and vice versa. But what is fascism? What are its characteristics? In this episode, we look at what makes a political ideology fascist and understand the challenges in defining such a term. We address this issue as Italy elects its first female Prime Minister, Giorgina Meloni. A politician regarded as far-right by many in the mainstream media and an individual whose upbringing was influenced by former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. As we assess her ideology, we will look for the conspiratorial antagonist reference in her speeches and determine whether conspiracy theories are on the rise in Italy's mainstream politics. My guest this week is Captain DadPool (@Captain_DadPool), an Iraq war vet and TikTok atheist. We discuss his de-conversion, how he got into the world of TikTok, and why it seems like a valuable platform for atheist outreach. This episode unintentionally ended up being the second in an informal three part series of chats with former conservative christians who went into the military and also are now liberal atheists. I found the overlaps and differences between the stories really interesting.Convocation: The mushrooms in Aaron's headCaptain's links: https://beacons.page/captaindadpoolMusic by GW RodriguezSibling Pods:Philosophers in Space: https://0gphilosophy.libsyn.com/Filmed Live Musicals Pod: https://www.filmedlivemusicals.com/thepodcast.htmlSupport us at Patreon.com/EmbraceTheVoidIf you enjoy the show, please Like and Review us on your pod app, especially iTunes. Freemasonry for centuries has been more influential than any other known secret society. Among its prominent members have been five kings of England, fourteen US presidents (including George Washington), and a veritable Who's Who of writers, artists, and politicians. Masons helped with everything from founding the United States to starting the Sicilian mafia, from connecting distant parts of the British Empire to coordinating revolutions, from being the bogeymen for the Catholic Church and fascist dictators alike to performing great works of charity. NASA's Buzz Aldrin even founded a Masonic lodge on the Moon.Through it all, Freemasonry has featured in conspiracy theories about subversion, perversion, and world domination. Some of these claims, such as those positing Masonic plots to kill John Kennedy and to start the Russia-Ukraine war, are laughable. Other associations between Freemasons and nefarious deeds are more plausible; there was, for example, significant Freemason involvement in modern Italy's most explosive political scandal.Historian John Dickie, author of the deeply researched history of Freemasonry called The Craft: How Freemasons Made the Modern World, recently joined David Priess to discuss it all. They talked about the secret rituals of Freemasonry; its origins and development in Europe and America; the importance of George Washington and other early American Masons; Masons, the French Revolution, and the Illuminati; the complicated relationship of Freemasonry and race relations in the United State; Dan Brown's bestselling novel The Last Symbol; the rise and fall of Masonic influence in 20th century America; what Freemasonry is such an easy target for conspiracy theorists; and the links among Italian Freemasons, organized crime, and political elites.
