From the Kaidankai archives:One man is obsessed by death and suicide, so it is not surprising that he would seek out Aokigahara, Japan's famous suicide forest. When he encounters an old woman in the forest, will he change his mind?First published in Yamamba: In Search of the Japanese Mountain Witch by Stone Bridge Press.David Sands Holloway was a scholar of contemporary Japanese literature, culture, and gender studies whose meteoric career rise was cut short by his sudden death, June 25, 2021. A tenure-track assistant professor of Japanese in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Rochester, David's academic interests included the precarity of the “lost decade;” youth cultures and subcultures; the intersection of Japanese literature with gender, media, and fantasy; millennial issues; tattoos, body alterations, and self-presentation; and manifestations of Japan's AIDS crisis in 1980s and 1990s popular culture and media. Creative writer, photographer, and an ardent basketball player until his knees gave out, David's regard for life was always inflected with compassion and a sly humor, the latter of which is apparent in “An Encounter in Aokigahara.” If you have feelings of suicide, please seek help at https://telljp.com (Japan)https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/talk-to-someone-now/ (English and Spanish)Click here to learn about the 2023 Kaidankai contest for writers.Website: kaidankaistories.comFollow us on: TwitterMastodonInstagramYouTubeFacebookPlease donate any amount to the Kaidankai:Donate $25 US and a podcast episode will be dedicated to you.Donate $50US and get a t-shirt with the Kaidankai logoKo-Fi. https://ko-fi.com/kaidankaighoststoriesPayPal: https://paypal.me/whiteensokaidankai?country.x=JP&locale.x=en_US

It's a little girl's eighth birthday. She wakes to a sight that looks like the end of the world. A radioactive mushroom cloud rises 130,000 feet in the air. And the world wakes up to the devastating fallout of nuclear weapons. In this new mini series from Sideways, writer and Times columnist Matthew Syed is calling for a nuclear awakening. Since the end of the Cold War, when relations between two of the world's nuclear superpowers - the former USSR and the USA - seemed more rosy, Matthew argues that many of us have slipped into a kind of comfortable amnesia about the presence of these destroyers of worlds. The wake up call came when President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine in February accompanied by veiled nuclear threats. It was a reminder of the mind bending fact that there are weapons in existence that are capable of eradicating our species. Over four episodes, Matthew explores the intellectual and strategic frameworks birthed by the bomb and the tensions of the Cold War, which sought to contain the ultimate destructive force. From deterrence to disarmament and non-proliferation, these ideas all aim at one goal - protection from catastrophic nuclear use. Understanding their origins and complexities is urgently needed, Matthew argues. Ultimately, Matthew will be asking if the actions of Putin in Ukraine call for a new intellectual framework to help make our world safe. Once the Soviets got the nuclear arsenal Stalin had sought, they had to learn to live with the bomb - and all the dilemmas that came with it. This episode examines how the Soviet Union adjusted to the difficult new reality of being a nuclear power. Leaders like Khrushchev and Molotov struggled to resolve the contradictions of nuclear warfare, while the scientists felt burdened by the emotional impact of what they saw at the atomic test sites. Usha looks at how the Soviet military planned for nuclear war and tries to understand why the two sides continued to build up ever-bigger arsenals even after they had enough firepower to destroy the enemy several times over. For the Soviets, as for the Americans, living with the bomb was a never-ending struggle to prepare for nuclear war while trying to keep the nuclear peace. Guests: Dr. David Holloway, Dr. Pavel Podvig, Dr. Olga Oliker

What happens when a poor country, ravaged by war and brutalized by a totalitarian dictator, but dead-set on international greatness, tries to become a nuclear superpower? This episode - the first of three covering the Soviet nuclear program - explores how Josef Stalin, desperate to match American nuclear might after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, set his country on a path from which it would never turn back. Usha looks at the shadowy network of spies bringing atomic secrets into the Soviet Union, the rise and fall of the terrifying Stalinist henchman Lavrenty Beria, and the mysterious "atomic cities" where battle-hardened prison laborers helped produce nuclear fuel - when they weren't drinking and getting in fights. Four years after Hiroshima, Stalin's orders became a reality when the first Russian atomic test lit up the sky over the Kazakh steppe - and the nuclear arms race truly began. July 2017: Dr. Henry Kissinger said that President Nixon “created a set of international policies whose main outlines survive to this day.” One of the most important is triangulation; by improving relations with China, the U.S. carved out favorable negotiating positions with the Soviet Union — while improving relations with both countries. Is the concept of triangulation between China, Russia and the U.S. still relevant in today’s world, and what can Americans expect the Trump administration’s policies toward Russia to be? Participants: Karl Eikenberry is the Oksenberg-Rohlen Fellow, Director of the U.S.-Asia Security Initiative and faculty member at the Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, Stanford University. Prior to his arrival at Stanford, he served as the U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan from May 2009 until July 2011, where he led the civilian surge directed by President Obama to reverse insurgent momentum and set the conditions for transition to full Afghan sovereignty. On this episode of Compelled, we discuss the human piece of garbage that is Nathan Larson and then talk about the impact of Anthony Bourdain's passing. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/nathan-larson-congressional-candidate-pedophileus5b10916de4b0d5e89e1e4824 Nathan Larson, a 37-year-old accountant from Charlottesville, Virginia, is running for Congress as an independent candidate in his native state. He is also a pedophile, as he admitted to HuffPost on Thursday, who has bragged in website posts about raping his late ex-wife. In a phone call, Larson confirmed that he created the now-defunct websites suiped.org and incelocalypse.today ― chat rooms that served as gathering places for pedophiles and violence-minded misogynists like himself. HuffPost contacted Larson after confirming that his campaign website shared an IP address with these forums, among others. His sites were terminated by their domain host on Tuesday. On the phone, he was open about his pedophilia and seemingly unfazed about his long odds of attaining government office. “A lot of people are tired of political correctness and being constrained by it,” he said. “People prefer when there's an outsider who doesn't have anything to lose and is willing to say what's on a lot of people's minds.” Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown TV-PG | 1h | Documentary | TV Series (2013– ) Episode Guide 98 episodes Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown Poster Anthony Bourdain visits countries, delving into their political issues as well as indigenous food and culture. In 1972, President Nixon famously visited China, moving away from a bilateral relationship with the Soviet Union and toward a more inclusive global conversation. Could the United States enhance its negotiating position with Russia today by improving relations with China? Experts from the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) convened at the Nixon Foundation to discuss relations between these three countries. Are Russia and China building a relationship in opposition to the United States? How important are relations between these three countries? How has the rise of populism and autocracy changed the relationship? FSI deputy director and senior fellow Kathryn Stoner asks these questions and more to the panel: FSI senior fellow David Holloway, the Raymond A. Spruance Professor of International History at CISAC; Thomas Fingar, a Shorenstein APARC fellow; and Karl Eikenberry, the Oksenberg-Rohlen Fellow at Shorenstein APARC. On this episode of “Hot off the Press,” Chef Pete and his sidekick Chef Nick Dimario sit down to dish with Gulf Coast culinary guru and food writer David Holloway. A native of Louisiana, Holloway moved to the Mobile area where he has spent the past 30 years writing for the Press Register. His AL.com food column “Generous Portions” is a staple of the Alabama food beat, bringing readers the latest in cuisine coverage with an emphasis on eating seasonal and locally-produced food. From recipes and cookbooks to restaurant reviews and food contests, Holloway covers the food beat “like gumbo covers rice, thick and with a hint of spiciness.” His search for Alabama’s best hamburger is one of his best-known recurring features. When asked what inspires his column ideas, Holloway says “whatever I’m hungry for when I sit down at my computer to write.” Pete chatted with Holloway this past week about the vitality of the restaurant scene in the Mobile area and the Port City’s rich culinary history that dates back more than 150 years—deeply rooted and influenced in Greek culture as reflected in the Mediterranean-inspired seafood dishes of beloved eateries such as Constantine’s and Rousso’s. Both agree that the uniqueness of the food along the Gulf Coast ties it together like a common language and that the future of the restaurant industry in this area is looking vibrant. A a lecture by David Holloway, Raymond A. Spruance Professor of International History at Stanford University. Discussant: Robert Jervis, Adlai E. Stevenson Professor and Professor of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University. The first thermonuclear weapons tests (1952-1955) had a profound impact on the political leaders of the three nuclear powers of the time including the Soviet Union, leading them to view a general nuclear war as unacceptable in some profound if ill-defined sense. In this talk Dr. Holloway will make use of some newly available materials to examine the development of military strategy in the Soviet Union from 1953 up to the SALT agreements of 1972. What is the appropriate strategy for an unacceptable war? How did Soviet thinking about war change over this time? What shaped the development of Soviet military strategy? This paper draws on a larger project on the international history of nuclear weapons. Dr. Holloway will therefore discuss Soviet military strategy in the context of the US-Soviet arms race and explore the impact of American policy and American ideas on Soviet thinking.

There were those in the Soviet Union and outside who greatly admired the Soviet commitment to science and technology. There were others who thought that the Soviet system inhibited scientific progress and technological innovation. And there were critics who regarded Soviet communism as a product of science and modernity, the perverse extreme of the belief that the world can be understood as a system and directed to the benefit of humanity. What does the Soviet experience tell us about science and technology? And what do science and technology tell us about the Soviet Union?
