Cotopaxi is named after a volcano in Ecuador–where Davis lived–and the brand icon is a llama, for the quirky herd animals of the high Andes.Brad is a returning guest on this show. Jim chatted with Brad back in December 2020, when he was the Chief Marketing Officer for General Mills. Brad worked at General Mills for over 16 years (four as CMO). Davis Smith is the Founder and Chairman of Cotopaxi, an outdoor brand with a humanitarian mission. The company has assisted over 4 million people living in poverty. The company has been profitable for the last 4 years and is expected to do $160M in revenue in 2023, up from $55M just two years before. In April 2023, Davis resigned after 10 years as CEO to lead a mission for his church in Brazil for three years. Davis is an EY Entrepreneur of the Year and was recognized as Utah's Businessperson of the Year in 2022. He is an adventurer who has floated the Amazon on a self-made raft, kayaked from Cuba to Florida, and explored North Korea. In Today's Episode with Davis Smith We Discuss: 1. From Selling $6M Worth of Pool Tables to the Amazon of Brazil to Founding Cotopaxi: How did Davis scale a pool table business to $6M in revenue? What were Davis' biggest takeaways from building the Amazon of Brazil, raising millions in VC funding and the business failing? How did depression and 36 hours on a sofa lead to the a-ha moment for Cotopaxi? 2. The Billion Dollar Company, Rejected by 100 Investors: How was the early fundraising journey for Davis with Cotopaxi? Why did so many investors say no? What was the best VC meeting he has ever had? Why do women understand Cotopaxi better? What does Davis believe are the biggest misalignments between VCs and Founders? Why does Davis believe we need a new type of financial product to fund long term projects? What are the biggest elements of fundraising that Davis believes founders do not understand? 3. Scaling Cotopaxi to $150M in Revenue: What are Davis' biggest lessons on what works and what does not from scaling Cotopaxi to $150M in revenue? Why did Davis not lay anyone off but decide everyone should take a pay cut instead? How did that go down? Why does letting people leave work earlier lead to better talent wanting to join your company? Why does Davis believe that you absolutely can build a huge business with balance in your life? 4. Life, Parenting, Marriage: Why does Davis believe that so many entrepreneurs chase the wrong thing? What do they chase? What should they be chasing instead? How does Davis analyze his relationship to money today? Does it make you happy? What does great parenting mean to Davis? How has that changed over time? How does marriage change when comparing pre-kids and post-kids? Was Davis nervous about becoming a father for the first time at the age of 24?

Cotopaxi, the Salt Lake City-based outdoor-apparel company, wasn't Davis Smith's first business. But it was his first business inspired by a mission to do more than just sell stuff. In fact, the vision for giving back came before the company. And the mission to build a public-benefit corp with strong values came before he ever sold one technicolor backpack. He tells host Christine Lagorio-Chafkin about the inspiration for, and the making the “gear for good” company Cotopaxi, which now has more than 300 employees, and whose revenues have surpassed $100 million.

Stephan Jacob, Co-founder and COO of Cotopaxi, joins Michael to talk about building an impact-driven business, how sustainability drives Cotopaxi's product development, managing a CEO transition, the proliferation of certified B Corps, donating revenue to fight poverty in developing countries, brand building and taking on North Face and Patagonia, and taking llamas on college campuses. With a humanitarian-drive and strong business acumen, Stephan's career in the COO seat began at Cotopaxi, following the sale of his company, Kembrel in 2013. During this time, Stephan reconnected with an old University of Pennsylvania Wharton and Lauder Institute classmate, Davis Smith, with the commitment to build a brand for those who shared their values: a deep-rooted interest in giving back and a passion for the outdoors. From there, came Cotopaxi, an outdoors brand, which has never wavered from its ESG principles and humanitarian focus. Under Stephan's stewardship, Cotopaxi has become a role model for how businesses can achieve the seemingly at-odds goals of making the world a better place while achieving growth. As a B-Corp using environmentally friendly sourced materials and ethically-sourced labor, Cotopaxi's values and colorful apparel have struck a chord with its customers, generating $100m in revenue, aiding 1.5 million people in poverty, and assisting 90k refugees throughout South America in 2021 alone.Where to find Stephan: LinkedinMentioned on the episode:Davis Smith, Cotopaxi's Co-founder & CEOBrad Hiranaga, Cotopaxi's Chief Brand Officer, General Mills' former Chief Marketing OfficerDamien Huang, Cotopaxi's President and incoming CEO,  Eddie Bauer's former CEOGrace Zuncic, Cotopaxi's Chief Impact Officer, Chobani's former Chief People OfficerB LabEgo is the Enemy

Today's premiere is the title track from “Dream Phases”, Davis Smith's forthcoming EP on Chicago-based Leisure Records. Smith's discography ranges from deep house via their DJ Heaven alias, to ambient and downtempo as Sorceress, and their next release marks their deep delve into electro, impressively channeling old school Detroit emotional energy throughout all four tracks, under their new Ephemeral alias. Dream Phases opens with a Drexciyan pad that coils symbiotically with euphoric keys throughout the track, taking us on a five minute daze inducing excursion. The track serves as the perfect opener to the rest of the EP, which rises in energy with “Forever Memory” and “Full Moon”, before “Azure” serves as the perfect melancholic closer to this beautiful EP. We look forward to hearing Smith's next sonic adventure with their stunning range of sounds and what they explore next.

In 2022, the company surpassed $100 million in revenue. Its work has caught the eye of investors. In 2021, Bain Capital's Double Impact Fund invested $45 million in Cotopaxi. In today's episode of Leadership Next, hosts Alan Murray and Ellen McGirt talk to Cotopaxi founder and CEO Davis Smith about why he built Cotopaxi as a for-profit company rather than a non-profit, and how Cotopaxi differs from other outdoor brands. Smith also explains why he's stepping away from leading the company he believes in so deeply. Later in the episode, we hear from Cecilia Chao, Managing Director of the Bain Double Impact Fund. You may not have heard of Cotopaxi. But you have likely heard of similar companies doing something different- Ben & Jerry's, Allbird, Patagonia, and BrewDog. What these companies have in common is B Corp certification. This is awarded to businesses for meeting the highest standards of accountability when it comes to social and environmental impact. Last year Cotopaxi also gave away $1.3million in donations as part of its pledges. But how does an FP&A team work to advance this mission? How can FP&A work to achieve goals which are ultimately not about maximizing shareholder wealth. Cole Dixon is FP&A Director at outdoor sports company Cotopaxi which has a tagline of Gear for Good on its high performance and eye-catching gear. For Dixon, the FP&A function at the company is central to “upholding a mission of our founders Davis Smith and Stephan [Jacob] that Cotopaxi can get us exploring and make a positive impact on other people's lives. So we're really truly committed that all of our products can be repurposed and that we prioritize human rights.”  Every FP&A metric – units per transaction, average order value, average store volume, the inventory returns for stores – also incorporates the company-wide mission.
