On October 20, Moldovans cast their ballots in both a presidential election and a constitutional referendum — and the results shocked many. In the referendum, which asked whether the country should change its constitution to include the goal of joining the European Union, the “yes” vote won by just over 50 percent. Meanwhile, in the presidential election, pro-E.U. incumbent Maia Sandu came in first but failed to win an outright majority.  The day after the vote, Sandu accused “criminal groups” of attempting to undermine the democratic process by working with foreign forces to try and buy as many as 300,000 votes. Now, she'll face pro-Russian candidate and former prosecutor general Alexandr Stoianoglo in a high-stakes run-off scheduled for November 3.  What does all of this say about Moldova's political landscape and future foreign policy orientation? To find out, The Naked Pravda spoke to Moldovan journalist and writer Paula Erizanu and Ecaterina Locoman, a senior lecturer in international studies at the University of Pennsylvania's Lauder Institute.  Timestamps for this episode: (3:05) Judiciary Reforms and Controversies (6:25) The Referendum and Its Implications (9:47) Election Day Atmosphere and Concerns (12:28) Post-Election Developments and Fraud Allegations (17:01) Russia's Influence and Moldova's Future (21:26) Impact of the Ukraine War on Moldova (23:14) Kremlin's Strategy and Moldova's Challenges (25:03) Public Opinion and the E.U. In episode 79 the Investing in Impact podcast, I speak with Ed Marcum, the Managing Partner of the Working Capital Fund, on the innovations creating a more transparent and responsible global supply chain. With over 20 years of experience in human rights and venture capital investing, Ed has worked across the for-profit, nonprofit, and public policy sectors.Previously, he spent more than a decade at Humanity United, guiding initiatives to address forced labor in corporate supply chains. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MBA/MA from The Wharton School and the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania.About the Working Capital FundThe Working Capital Fund is on a mission to improve the lives of marginalized workers, catalyzing economic justice by investing in innovative solutions that address the deep-seated challenges of global supply chains.Global supply chains are enormous, involving millions of workers across thousands of businesses. On average, a Fortune 500 company works with over 10,000 suppliers, producing the goods that consumers rely on daily. However, these supply chains are often associated with some of the most pressing challenges humanity faces, including forced labor, unfair wages, and environmental degradation.Annually, over $354 billion worth of goods are at risk of being tainted by forced labor, with more than 17 million workers trapped in modern slavery conditions. These challenges are often hidden deep within supply chains, making them difficult to detect and resolve. Moreover, supply chains are a primary contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating the climate crisis. How the Working Capital Fund Works to Create ImpactThe Working Capital Fund focuses on investing in technologies and solutions that address the injustices inherent in global supply chains.Through its strategic investments, it aims to create a positive impact on workers and the environment. Key areas of focus include:1. AI-Enabled Transparency ToolsOne of the biggest challenges in addressing supply chain issues is the lack of transparency. Corporations often do not have visibility into the practices of their suppliers, making it difficult to identify labor violations or environmental concerns.By investing in AI-enabled transparency tools, the Working Capital Fund is empowering companies to map their entire supply chains and assess risks in real time. These tools offer a clear view of potential human rights abuses or environmental risks, helping businesses make more informed decisions about their suppliers.2. Worker-Voice SolutionsEmpowering workers is a critical part of creating a fair and just supply chain. The Working Capital Fund invests in worker-voice solutions that give laborers the tools they need to hold their employers accountable. These solutions allow workers to anonymously report unsafe working conditions, wage theft, or other violations, providing valuable feedback to companies and regulators. With this data, stakeholders can take action to improve labor conditions and ensure that workers' rights are respected.3. Financial Technology for Fair PayEnsuring fair wages for workers is another priority for the Working Capital Fund.By investing in financial technologies, the Fund is helping to create systems that ensure workers are paid promptly and fairly. These technologies also help gather sustainability data on upstream suppliers, providing insights into whether they are adhering to ethical labor practices. With this information, companies can work towards ensuring that their entire supply chain is both economically and socially responsible.

It's no secret that handling medical data is complicated and time-consuming. Of course, the goal is to address the patient buried beneath the in-depth patient notes, multiple EHRs, and drug prescriptions. Perhaps technology can make that a bit easier! In this episode, we have the special privilege of hearing the research of two graduate students who have found the biggest pain points in our primary healthcare system and have brainstormed ways that technology, especially emerging AI, can help address these issues. Every listener will find a way to relate to the stories shared in this episode, and we hope our discussion about the short-term and long-term goals for the application of AI in medicine makes you optimistic about the future of primary healthcare! Trevor Martinez is a current master's student at the University of Pennsylvania pursuing an MSE in bioengineering. He is primarily interested in the fields of biomedical data science, healthcare, and medical devices. Pavan Patel is a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania pursuing a dual MBA/MA from the Wharton School and the Lauder Institute, and he is also a computer science student at Penn Engineering. Previously, he worked in healthcare at Hazel Health and in private credit and equity at Bain Capital and CI Capital. It was great to hear what these young minds came up with, and they graciously shared some of the visuals they created to explain information silos. If you want to view the visuals along with the podcast, make sure to watch via our YouTube channel! We also had Dr. Ross Koppel hop on this episode. Dr. Koppel is a professor of sociology and medical informatics at the University of Pennsylvania, a Senior Fellow at Penn's Center for Public Health Initiative, and a Senior Fellow at Penn's Institute for Biomedical Informatics. His hundreds of articles focus on the cybersecurity, usability, and ethics of healthcare information technology and has greatly impacted the field's understanding of how we can improve human-computer interactions and better integrate HIT into hospital workflow. He was the perfect person to chime in on Trevor and Pavan's research! Finally, we had the great pleasure of welcoming a new co-host to our podcast! Dr. Stacy Iannone is the project manager for Dr. Johnson's lab, which researches computationally-enhanced healthcare. She brings with her an extensive background in clinical research. We were so excited to have her share her insights and experiences on this episode!  We really enjoyed discussing these students' insightful research and debating how we see AI entering the conversation. Show Summary MBA admissions veteran Kara Keenan Sweeney has joined Accepted. Formerly part of the admissions team at Wharton Lauder, INSEAD and Columbia Business School, she's not only an Accepted consultant but she's our guest on the podcast. Kara discusses various aspects of the MBA application process, including choosing the right schools, handling common challenges faced by international applicants, and approaching the essays and resume. She also touches on the qualities that management consulting firms look for in MBA recruits and provides advice for MBA re-applicants. Finally, she discusses the use of AI and ChatGPT in the admissions process and the importance of authenticity in application materials. Show Notes Our guest today is no stranger to Admissions Straight Talk. She's been on several times but wore a different hat. It gives me great pleasure to introduce Kara Keenan Sweeney, Accepted consultant. Kara previously served as the Director of Admissions, Marketing and Financial Aid at Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Penn Law School. Kara has an extensive background in graduate admissions, starting with her master's in higher education administration from Columbia and including admissions positions at INSEAD, Penn State, and as I mentioned, Wharton's Lauder Institute. Most recently, she was a senior recruiter for McKinsey & Company.  Kara, welcome to Admissions Straight Talk. [1:24] Thanks, Linda. It's great to be with you on this side of the table. Glad to have you back, and this time as a colleague. Let's start with something really easy. How did you get into admissions? [1:32] Yeah, it was a little bit by happenstance, which I think is true for a lot of admissions professionals or higher education folks. I started working at Columbia University at the beginning of my career, and one of my first jobs was in student affairs at the business school, and I was working specifically with Executive MBA students as their... Directing a cohort through the two-year program, so working closely with admissions, actually. And I started to get a little bit of exposure to admissions and help out with interviewing and things like that. And then, a few years into that role, an admissions job opened up on my team, and I was lucky enough to get it. And the rest is history. That was, I think, 17 years ago, which is crazy to think about it. It's been that long. But yeah, I started in student affairs and navigated my way to admissions, and it's been a great experience. You have a wealth of experience in MBA admissions and a lot of it has been focused in the international business space. What do you think is critical for MBAs interested in international business, and specifically those programs that you've worked for? [2:31] It's funny as I'm thinking through the question again. So much of business education now is international. The cohorts and the classes are so international. I think Wharton's 30, 40%; Lauder, of course, is probably 50, 60%. So it's just such a global pool of students. Back maybe 30, 40 years ago, it was mostly Americans at Wharton or whatever. So it's changed a lot. Very global by nature. But for students who are looking at international business, it's looking at it in that global context. It's looking at it from a big vantage point. For Americans who are maybe looking to gain some more hands-on experience, maybe going to INSEAD or London Business School, having a “study abroad” experience can be a great way to really get that on-the-ground cultural immersion, language immersion in some cases. For some international students coming from outside of the US, coming to Wharton Lauder or Columbia Business School or any of the US schools is a great way to get that US or North America focus. Getting that on-the-ground experience is really invaluable. Working at Lauder and at INSEAD, it's funny,

Stephan Jacob, Co-founder and COO of Cotopaxi, joins Michael to talk about building an impact-driven business, how sustainability drives Cotopaxi's product development, managing a CEO transition, the proliferation of certified B Corps, donating revenue to fight poverty in developing countries, brand building and taking on North Face and Patagonia, and taking llamas on college campuses. With a humanitarian-drive and strong business acumen, Stephan's career in the COO seat began at Cotopaxi, following the sale of his company, Kembrel in 2013. During this time, Stephan reconnected with an old University of Pennsylvania Wharton and Lauder Institute classmate, Davis Smith, with the commitment to build a brand for those who shared their values: a deep-rooted interest in giving back and a passion for the outdoors. From there, came Cotopaxi, an outdoors brand, which has never wavered from its ESG principles and humanitarian focus. Under Stephan's stewardship, Cotopaxi has become a role model for how businesses can achieve the seemingly at-odds goals of making the world a better place while achieving growth. As a B-Corp using environmentally friendly sourced materials and ethically-sourced labor, Cotopaxi's values and colorful apparel have struck a chord with its customers, generating $100m in revenue, aiding 1.5 million people in poverty, and assisting 90k refugees throughout South America in 2021 alone.Where to find Stephan: LinkedinMentioned on the episode:Davis Smith, Cotopaxi's Co-founder & CEOBrad Hiranaga, Cotopaxi's Chief Brand Officer, General Mills' former Chief Marketing OfficerDamien Huang, Cotopaxi's President and incoming CEO,  Eddie Bauer's former CEOGrace Zuncic, Cotopaxi's Chief Impact Officer, Chobani's former Chief People OfficerB LabEgo is the Enemy

The Sales MBA: How to Influence Corporate Buyers by Douglas Cole About the Book: Contrary to many predictions, there is a growing demand for highly skilled sales jobs in the modern economy. Whether you're a salesperson or a knowledge worker, knowing how to influence corporate buyers has become a critical skill. But most sales books tend to be narrow and prescriptive. They focus only on tactics and tools rather than principles and mindset that can redefine your approach. This is a different kind of sales book. In plain and direct language, the author shows what it means to become a Strategist, a Change Agent, and a Decision Architect. Referencing the most important research and a wide assortment of field experiences, The Sales MBA explains how companies compete, how organizations evolve, and how people decide. Whether you sell to companies or lead others who do, this book will strengthen your credibility as a trusted advisor. About the Author: Douglas Cole is a sales leader at LinkedIn and adviser with startup accelerators in Canada and the United States, and a part-time university lecturer at the Rotman School of Management and the Schulich Executive Education Center in Toronto. Over more than 20 years in consulting and sales, he has sold tens of millions of dollars and software-as-a-service and advisory work. He holds an MBA from the Wharton School, a Master's degree in International Studies from the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, a Master's degree in English Literature, and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and English Literature, all from the University of Toronto. And, interesting fact – He is a big fan of the Hello Kitty brand! Discover what opportunities the Wharton Lauder MBA program offers [Show Summary] Kara Keenan Sweeney, Director of Admissions Marketing and Financial Aid at the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Penn Law School shares how the program continues to offer global opportunities during a COVID influenced world. [Show Notes] Welcome to the 465th episode of Admissions Straight Talk. Thanks for joining me today and whenever you're able to tune in. The featured resource for today's show is Fitting in and Standing Out: The Paradox at the Heart of Admissions. Your application needs to show that you're going to do both, and that's the difficult paradox at the heart of admissions. Master that paradox, and you are well on your way to acceptance. Download the free guide. It gives me great pleasure to introduce Kara Keenan Sweeney, Director of Admissions Marketing and Financial Aid at the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Penn Law School. Kara has an extensive background in graduate admissions, starting with her master's in higher administration at Columbia, and then moving onto admissions positions at INSEAD, the University of Pennsylvania, Penn State, and now the Lauder Institute.  Can you give us an overview of the Wharton Lauder program for those listeners who aren't that familiar with it? [1:45] The Lauder program was founded in the mid-1980s by the Lauder family to work with Wharton to help educate and generate a new, globally-minded group of business leaders. When students come to the Lauder Institute, they're earning a Master of Arts in International Studies at the same time, they're getting their MBA from Wharton. Basically, it's an MA/MBA joint degree fully integrated into the MBA program.  When students come to Lauder, they focus on one of our six programs of concentration. Five of those programs are regionally focused. We have a program on Africa, East and Southeast Asia, Europe, Latin America, and then what we call the SAMENA region or South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. That's our fifth regional program. We also have a global program for our students who have already had fairly significant global experience. In our regional program students are almost in every case also focused on a language. We have 10 languages of instruction at Lauder. When they come to Lauder they're already speaking a language at an advanced level, and then they'll continue to work on that language until they get to the superior or the fluent level over the two years as part of their studies at Lauder. It's a fully integrated joint degree. We have a small program with about 70 to 80 students a year. It's a really international community and just an amazing group to be a part of. Are you also a joint program with the law school? [3:22] That's right. Thanks for highlighting that. We do have a joint agreement with the law school as well. Each year we have a handful of students that do it. It's not really by design; it's a little bit by default. The law school has just less than 200 students a year over at Penn Law. Wharton is up to about 900. There are just a lot more MBA students. The Wharton program was founded to really work and fit in specifically with the Wharton school way back when it was founded. Our law school partnership is a little bit more recent, but in the class that's starting this summer, we actually have three incoming JD students. We're really happy to have them in the program. We love to have them, but we just tend to have fewer of them. Does the Lauder Institute only work with applicants interested in dual degrees? [4:13] Exactly. Lauder only offers a joint degree. Students take about two classes a semester at Lauder. They take their normal Wharton course load or their normal course load over at Penn Law. At Lauder, we borrow the credits from the other degree so that they can graduate with both because some of the L...

The deeper he dug, the more he found that was either difficult or expensive for her, and he found that his aunt was not alone.
