Yes, it has been awhile. Apologies. I've been busy with other creative endeavours but I'll always circle back to the BOOMCAST!This is the 4th MOVIE VAULT PROJECT episode, where I'm joined once again with the other Cinema Saviours CLINT CHAFFER and CHAD WEEKS. If you are not aware, the U.S. Government has commissioned us to save 50% of all the major films ever made due to the unfortunate fact that an asteroid is approaching and the chances of society being wiped out is roughly 50/50. Due to storage space issues, I guess, the other half will be condemned to be forgotten. Will we pick the right films? Weigh in on our decisions! This episodes films are: THE FIFTH ELEMENT, SUPER 8, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN TEN DAYS, GONE IN 60 SECONDS, 300, DISTRICT 9, OCEANS 11, 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND, 2012, 1408, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, 13 GHOSTS, 12 ANGRY MEN, 8MM, THREE KINGS, 16 CANDLES and THREE MEN AND A BABY.Enjoy! No one can deny director David Slade hit it out of the ballpark with his 2 initial features, HARD CANDY (2005) and 30 DAYS OF NIGHT (2007). Both were splendid genre films and have become cult classics. Between the years he has directed music videos and television episodes among some other films. Late in 2023 his latest film DARK HARVEST was released during the Halloween season. In the early 1960's within a small isolated farming community in Illinois, every Halloween a monster known as Sawtooth Jack rises from the local cornfields. Years ago he entered the local church and cursed the town to with failed crops and hardship. Now, each year, a custom has been set in place. Each Halloween, the teenage boys of the town must hunt Sawtooth Jack before he curses the town once more. The movie is based on the novel with the same name written by author Norman Partridge. After being held back for a year, the movie was released to digital VOD as the last film by MGM/United Artist before their absorption into the Amazon movie fold. Your co-hosts take a look at David Slade's “comeback” and give their thoughts on the movie.

This episode the Zissou and Nez help a small town take on a horde of blood sucking vampires up in Alaska in the 2007 vampire horror film 30 DAYS OF NIGHT.   In the far Northern Hemisphere, the small town of Barrow, Alaska, experiences a solid month of darkness every year. Though most of the residents head south for the winter, some townspeople remain behind. However, those that stay regret their decision when, one year, hungry vampires descend on Barrow to feed. What are the pros and cons of this incredible new technology? What exactly is diffusion modeling and how does it work? Was A.I. developed and released into the hands of the general public too quickly? Should A.I. be more strictly regulated? What does A.I. mean for the future careers of filmmakers? How long until programs like ChatGBT allow studio executives and producers to stop having to rely on actual writers to generate screenplays that will be commercially appealing to an audience that's already numb from an abundance of “content?” If A.I. is creating new art from existing art then where does the original artist factor into the equation when it comes to credit and potential financial gains? What are the dangers of releasing such advanced technology into a world that is already torn apart by social media, “fake news,” and large factions of society that only believe their own eyes and ears if they like what they are seeing or hearing? Are we entering a new age of artistic enlightenment… or hurdling towards our own creative demise? As with all of our roundtable specials, we hope that you will continue this fascinating, frightening, and extremely complicated conversation with your own friends, family, and co-workers long after the episode is over.

Music is intrinsic to horror films, more so than any genre other than perhaps musicals. A symphony of sonic majesty can evoke emotions, and movie scores are essential to building tension, suspense and anxiety. The composers who do it best can even invoke memories of a standout moment — like the screech of violins in Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece Psycho. Listen to a soundtrack in isolation, however, and its chilling power can be felt on its own. Spotify podcast presents a Halloween special podcast "Horror Themes & Soundtracks" with music host Danny Diess. The music scores featured in this special are taken from some of the best horror movie soundtracks of all time. Featuring music from the films The Shining, Suspiria, Near Dark, The Exorcist, Salem's Lot, Vamp, The Omen, 30 Days Of Night, Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street, Hellraiser, & more. In our second episode focused on vampires and werewolves, we cover the meaner and less sexy side of the genre. We're talking Ginger Snaps: Unleashed (2004), 30 Days Of Night (2007), Let The Right One In (2008) and Daybreakers (2009). And there's not a single leather catsuit in sight! I've been saying for the longest time that there's a huge shortage when it comes to vampire flicks that are actually great... The last one I could think of was 30 Days Of Night, and those are HUGE shoes to fill. But this one here has been slipping by me and it's mainly because there was really not much of a buzz that I remember. I'm not sure if it's because this is a remake or what, but I went into this blind and without wanting to watch the source material. And I didn't need an invitation to do so like one of our main players here. Enjoy, y'all.

On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, the Buzzards mix it up with legendary character actor Mark Boone Junior, or just "Boone" as he prefers to be called.   Boone's had a weird and storied career, from his improvisational cabaret beginnings with Steve Buscemi to early No Wave work with underground directors like Eric Mitchell (THE WAY IT IS OR EURYDICE IN THE AVENUES, UNDERGROUND, U.S.A.) and Lizzie Borden (BORN IN FLAMES) to indie darlings like LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN, SLAVES OF NEW YORK, Buscemi's masterpiece TREES LOUNGE (among several films that Buscemi directed), and PETE SMALLS IS DEAD.    Hollywood came a-callin' and he caught a big role in Sam Raimi's western THE QUICK AND THE DEAD, did two for David Fincher, SEVEN and THE GAME, two for Christopher Nolan, MEMENTO and BATMAN BEGINS.  He was in ROSEWOOD, THE THIN RED LINE, GET CARTER, 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, FROZEN RIVER and so many more.   He has also been in quite a bit of television. The list includes "The Equalizer," "Law & Order," "Quantum Leap," "Seinfeld," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Flaked," "The Last Man on Earth" and recently in "The Mandalorian."   The list goes on.  However, it is his role as Bobby Munson on "Sons of Anarchy" for the full seven seasons that has gotten him the most recognition. The blessing and the curse of a high profile television show is brought to bear.   We get the full monty on our man Boone, from his childhood and time playing collegiate and professional soccer to the early beginnings in NYC with Buscemi and their experience with Martin Scorsese, Peter Gabriel, Roseanna Arquette and Nick Nolte on the film NEW YORK STORIES to the Fincher/Nolan days to "SOA" to now.    Boone is great fun to talk with and he is both reverential and candid in equal measure. So pull up a chair, have an oat soda, and listen to Boone wax on about a life in showbusiness, no matter how reluctant he may be about defining himself as such.   We are in Boonetown: population: 1.   Please remember to hit subscribe on our YouTube Channel or on Apple or Spotify. If you have questions, comments, ideas or guests for future shows, please email us at FIVEDOLLARBUZZ@gmail.com.  We;ll get back to you just as soon as we finish watching that new series "Paradise City" on Amazon. Well, here's to hoping that we get another solid vampire flick... I stick to my guns when I say 30 Days Of Night still has the bar set when it comes to this type of genre, so the recent years have been a bit of a dry spell overall. The airplane setting has been done in horror, but I don't think I've seen a vampire film solely set there throughout, so it may be interesting. Enjoy, y'all.

This week we discuss an under appreciated franchise. It's "30 Days Of Night". What makes these movies so great are the vampires. These arent your sparkly emo vampires. They are feral creatures who screech, have shark like teeth and are super strong. Their sole goal is to have you for dinner. They are right up there on my list of favorite vampires of all time. I just wish there were more movies to explore their history.    And in honor of the hardy souls of Barrow, Alaska here's some info on Akutaq or Eskimo Ice Cream here  Photo: Here

The Last Days of Night (Random House) From Graham Moore, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Imitation Game and New York Times bestselling author of The Sherlockian, comes a thrilling historical novel—based on actual events—about the nature of genius, the cost of ambition, and the battle to electrify America. In 1888 New York, gas lamps still flicker in the city streets, but electric light is in its infancy. The person who can harness this miracle and bring it to the masses, to forever change people’s relationship with night, will make history—and a vast fortune. An untested lawyer named Paul Cravath, fresh out of Columbia Law School, takes a case that seems impossible to win. Paul’s client, George Westinghouse, has been sued by Thomas Edison over a billion-dollar question: Who invented the light bulb and holds the right to power the country? The case affords Paul entry to the heady world of high society—the glittering parties in Gramercy Park mansions, and the more insidious dealings done behind closed doors. The task facing him is beyond daunting. Edison is a wily, dangerous opponent with vast resources at his disposal—private spies, newspapers in his pocket, and the backing of J. P. Morgan himself. Yet this unknown lawyer shares with his famous adversary a compulsion to win at all costs. How will he do it? In obsessive pursuit of victory, Paul crosses paths with Nikola Tesla, an eccentric, brilliant inventor who may hold the key to defeating Edison, and with Agnes Huntington, a beautiful opera singer who proves to be a flawless performer on stage and off. As Paul takes greater and greater risks, he’ll find that everyone in his path is playing their own game, and no one is quite who they seem. Praise for The Last Days of Night “In The Last Days of Night, Graham Moore takes us back to the dawn of light—electric light—into a world of invention and skullduggery, populated by the likes of Edison, Westinghouse, Tesla, and the novel’s hero, a young lawyer named Paul Cravath (a name that will resonate with ambitious law students everywhere). It’s part legal thriller, part tour of a magical time—the age of wonder—and once you’ve finished it, you’ll find it hard to return to the world of now.”—Erik Larson, author of The Devil in the White City “Mesmerizing, clever, and absolutely crackling, The Last Days of Night is a triumph of imagination. Graham Moore has chosen Gilded Age New York as his playground, with outsized characters—Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse—as his players. The result is a beautifully researched, endlessly entertaining novel that will leave you buzzing.” —Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl “The Last Days of Night is a wonder, a riveting historical novel that is part legal thriller, part techno-suspense. This fast-paced story about the personal and legal clash over the invention of the light bulb is a tale of larger-than- life characters and devious doings, and a significant meditation on the price we as a society pay for new technology. Thoughtful and hugely entertaining.” —Scott Turow “The author of The Sherlockian presents another twisty historical novel set at the end of the gaslight era. This time the story takes place in a New York City perched on the very precipice of electricity. The book’s central focus is on American ingenuity as the basis for commercial success and the so-called ‘war of currents’ waged between Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, and Nikola Tesla over the creation of the lightbulb. Paul Cravath, the brilliant but inexperienced lawyer hired by Westinghouse to countersue the pugnacious Edison for copyright infringement, unscrupulous behavior, and even violence, provides a first person perspective. Legal battles and the rancor between scientists drive the pace, while a curious romance unmasks yet another underhanded charade. Woven into this complex drama is a philosophical question about invention: Who is the inventor: the one with the idea, the one who makes a working model, or the one to obtain the patent? Who really did invent the lightbulb? How does setting up rules help you build a world? In our most epic/longest episode yet, Chas and Stu tackle world building in films. Specifically, how the rules make something a world and not just a setting. Starting with world-centric genres like sci-fi and fantasy, we also cover horror, crime drama and - er - "other". We discuss a variety of techniques for setting up the rules of the world, including cold opens, voiceover, title cards and outsider characters! We've limited ourselves to the opening 3-5 pages... mostly... because (so the theory goes) they're the pages that teach the audience how to read/watch your story/film. Like with the character introductions episode, we cover a lot of scripts. In no particular order... [deep breath]... THE MATRIX, THE MATRIX RELOADED, MATRIX REVOLUTIONS, INCEPTION, GRAVITY, MINORITY REPORT, MOON, LOOPER, ELYSIUM, JURASSIC PARK, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE, MADAGASCAR, FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, PAN'S LABYRINTH, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, NIGHT WATCH, VAN HELSING, THE ONE I LOVE, 28 WEEKS LATER, WORLD WAR Z, DAWN OF THE DEAD, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, ZOMBIELAND, WOMAN IN BLACK, BRICK, ANIMAL KINGDOM, DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE, THE UNTOUCHABLES, GOODFELLAS, SHORT TERM 12, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, MOONRISE KINGDOM,THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, and FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL. Damn that was a lot! And we've probably missed some, too. So have a listen and please let us know!
