British embryologist Wilmut died on 10 September at the age of 79. He led the team that created Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell.
Two cases of avian flu have been confirmed on game farms in Cheshire and Staffordshire, where pheasant and partridge are produced for shooting. Every year more than 40 million partridge and pheasant are released into the wild from game farms, to populate land for shooting. In May the RSPB called for more restrictions on releasing game birds into the countryside, to reduce the risk of new strains of avian flu, but the British Association for Shooting and Conservation says a ban on releases of game birds is not the answer. Sir Ian Wilmut who led the research team that produced Dolly the cloned sheep at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, has died at the age of 79. The team used a cell from the mammary gland of a dead adult sheep to create a living animal that was genetically identical to the donor. The work laid the foundations for stem cell research, a technology which aims to cure many of the diseases of ageing by enabling the body to regenerate damaged tissue. All week we're picking out the stories from top-fruit farming - that's apples, pears, plums and cherries. One fruit grower in Kent says he is giving away all his crop to charity, because he says he can't make any money selling it. The Canary Islands have banned imports of UK seed and eating potatoes to their Islands after Colorado beetles were found in potatoes in Kent and Hampshire in July. Each year, the UK exports 50 thousand tonnes of potatoes to Spain, and the Canary Islands are the fourth largest export market for seed potatoes from Scotland. The government's Animal and Plant Health Agency says the Spanish National Plant Protection Organisation has agreed to import potatoes again under new criteria and the APHA is discussing this with the sector. As Ben continues to struggle under the unbearable weight of his massive talent, he thought best to rope in someone else to see if they can work with The Machholz. I don't think Sean will be coming back. Let's sit back and feast on two juggernauts of cinema, Sean Travolta and Dan Cage, as they Face.........Off in John Woo's 90's action classic. Sean explains why he doesn't want Terminator 16: Rise of the nursing home residents for Judgement Day with Dark Fates and no chance of Salvation. Genisys...Jai Courtney...Ben hates CGI. Does that make him a hater? Sean channels his inner Fiona with a proper trivia dump. Decent trivia, Sean. God, Fiona sucks. She has one job. ONEDan's new hobby of punching his boom arm continues. Dan's a twat & would anyone be sad if Sean sniped him and his son during their weekly visit to the local merry-go-round? Ok, just Dan. Dolly The Sheep, the first ever successfully cloned mammal, was introduced to the world's press at the Roslin Institute in Scotland on 22nd February, 1997.Born seven months earlier, with the comparatively unremarkable name ‘Lamb Number 6LL3', news of her birth had been leaked by The Observer before the scientific paper about her genesis could be published, sparking an international frenzy. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly ask why the international media (and Bill Clinton) took the opportunity to drum up panic about human cloning, rather than engage with the remarkable breakthrough she actually represented; reveal why Dolly developed a snack habit; and identify a missed opportunity for Dolly's Tea Rooms in Roslin…Further Reading:• ‘Dolly the sheep' (National Museum of Scotland): https://www.nms.ac.uk/dolly• ‘Dolly the Sheep and the human cloning debate - twenty years later' (The Conversation, 2016): https://theconversation.com/dolly-the-sheep-and-the-human-cloning-debate-twenty-years-later-63712• ‘Retro Report: The Story of Dolly the Cloned Sheep' (The New York Times, 2014): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tELZEPcgKkEEnjoyed this episode? Oh boy. Did you know that some people think that Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Eminem, some guy named Donald Marshall, and many other celebrities have been cloned? There are conspiracies revolving around underground cloning centers created and run by illuminati global elites who sometimes kill celebrities who don't follow orders and then clone them to keep making music money mostly. Donny and his clones have been busy writing hit songs since before he was five years old. Most of the music you enjoy was written by clones. We look into so much crazy today. We also look into the actual science of cloning and explain what has been done clone-wise, and what's possible. We break down the difference between therapeutic cloning, reproductive cloning, and more. So much cloning! If you don't enjoy this episode, I hope your clone does. When Jon feels a sudden pain in his chest the Morning JaM pontificates on three possible reasons, could it be caused by a) A blood clot from Jon's recent AstraZeneca vaccine? b) A broken rib from Jon going ass-over-tit running to get his UberEats Delivery? or, c) Jon is a hypochondriac and actually completely fine. Yes, no fear, this episode title does not indicate a turn towards serious debate for the Morning JaM, the JaMmers just wonder if Jon's AstraZeneca-induced fever dreams are a worse than Mike's Pfizer induced-number twos. Meanwhile Mike is in Coronavirus Groundhog Day, urinating in wide-open areas, watching too much Olympics, and drinking too many beers. Jon on the other-hand is confused by his favourite sport's penalties and celebrating 25 years of Dolly The Sheep. The Morning JaM has also received a less than complimentary piece of correspondence. The Morning JaM would be gleeful if you contacted them at hello@morningjam.co.uk, whether it be complementary or not. Theme tune is sampled from Walking Back to El Paso from texasradiofish
In the UK, rules around attendance at schools after a covid outbreak are changing, but the country still hasn't decided whether or not to vaccinate children. The team finds out what the hold up is, especially given some countries have already taken the leap. It's been 25 years since the cloning of Dolly the sheep, so the team looks at Dolly's legacy, exploring the many advancements and discoveries that have come as a result of this marvel of biological science. They then discuss the small matter of how to save the planet as former UK chief scientist David King, founder of the newly formed Climate Crisis Advisory Group, sets out his mission. In the race to create a breakthrough quantum computer, China is in the lead - the team explores a leapfrogging event which has seen the country achieve quantum advantage, creating the fastest computer on Earth. And they discuss NASA's exciting plans to create a spacecraft powered by solar sails. On the pod are Rowan Hooper, Chelsea Whyte, Matt Sparks and Clare Wilson. If you’re a budding entrepreneur, you can’t learn to swim by doing exercises on the beach, says Sir Ronald Cohen. “You can't keep preparing yourself for an entrepreneurial career. You learn by doing. And by your mid to late 20s, you're ready to do that. You don't have to prepare beyond that.”Sir Ronald is Chairman of the Global Steering Group for Impact Investment and The Portland Trust. He is a co-founder director of Social Finance UK, USA, and Israel, and co-founder Chair of Bridges Fund Management and Big Society Capital. But before all of this, he co-founded and was Executive Chairman of Apax Partners from 1972-2005.From immigrant, to grammar school, to Harvard Business School where he discovered Venture Capital, to setting up Apax Partners, to impact investing. Sir Ronald has had quite a life, his story is one of humanity and people. A 45-50 year overnight success story.“Venture capital was a way for me to do good and to do well, and at the same time create jobs and make money.” After becoming financially independent and at the age of 53, he informed his partners at Apax that he was leaving to deal with more important things. He wanted to help tackle social issues and try to contribute to achieving peace between Palestinians and Israelis. So, if you’re looking to create a social impact, Sir Ronald has a lot of sage advice for you - this is one episode not to be missed.“Principles have a cost, but they're always a bargain in the end. It was from a woman with Endometrisois who is contemplating ‘allowing’ her bladder to be removed. Yes! Her bladder! Removed! Oh my goodness. Whatever next?! We can produce Dolly The Sheep and fly to the Moon, yet women with Endometriosis are regularly having major organs removed. In brief; she previously had a cystectomy operation for medical treatment for her Endometriosis and cysts. But before long, not only did Endometriosis symptoms return, but soon there were side effects evident and further complications. One of them was bladder pressure. Painkillers, drugs and surgery do not treat the underlying causes of the Endometriosis condition, which is inflammation and hormonal imbalance. Painkillers, drugs and surgery only try to manage the symptoms. The bladder is a very sensitive organ which sits under the uterus. Bladder pressure (from my experience), can be caused by an inflamed uterus or general inflammation in the lower abdominal area. Equally, the bladder may be acutely sensitive to products like sugar, wheat, soy, gmo, additives, preservatives – which are widely known to irritate and add inflammation. So with my own journey (and other women I work with) it was only a case of adjusting and swapping out these elements that’s cause the inflammation and the bladder pressure disappeared. I refer to this process as Laidlaw Protocols amd the 5 P’s (poisons). The 5 P’s consist of Produce, Products, Property, People & Past. What has upset me the most is the mistreatment and misinformation she has been given. What on earth is her body and life going to be like after the removal of an essential organ? Only in the medical profession, can a treatment go wrong and/or fail, yet there is no recourse. There is no ‘money back’ and no accountability. No other industry in the world work operates like this. What is terribly troubling too is the emotional and psychological impact on her. It is often the case that many women, who may be so terribly traumatised by the decades of pain that has ravaged their body, and the invasive surgery, that they may develop a trauma bond with their physician or surgeon. I know I used to feel the same. That was me 6 years ago… So utterly desolate and desperate to be well – or at the very least pain-free – and that the only person who ‘appears’ to be helping them is someone offering ineffective treatment yet you cling to that surgical hope. Yet, why if Surgery is so ineffective do women have multiple surgeries? Do you know why? Because the surgeons blame the women or state it’s an enigma or they just don’t know. How is that even possible? How is it that miraculous feats can be accomplished in surgical realms now, yet the treatment for Endometriosis has remained the same for almost 50 years. Why? Big Pharma… Money… What if the advice they get is flawed or outdated? The medical profession used to believe, only 40 years ago, that cutting out part of your prefrontal cortex (brain) helped relieve depression… What if the current treatment is causing the Endometriosis to grow, creating new symptoms and side effects? I had 6 surgeries before I realised that the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results” as Einstein said. It rarely occurs to women with Endometriosis to get a second opinion – or to question the professional WHY the procedure did not work. The gynaecological system is well oiled Machine. The Gold Standard does not address the underlying root causes of Endometriosis. So in over 97% of cases the symptoms return with more complications and adhesions. To remove the bladder! It’s barbaric. How is this allowed to happen? Whilst there is obviously a requirement for A&E services and transplants, the medical profession struggle to treat conditions like Endometriosis and bladder pressure; in my opinion and from my own past experience. Yet the trauma has bonded this poor woman to the very person who is causing her more harm. And the vicious cycle continues. If you are curious to know more and to learn how it IS possible to allow your body to regenerate, then listen to Stacey’s testimonial. Hear her success story about how her bladder pressure reduced, then disappeared along with her Endometriosis during my 12 Week Foundation Program. How Stacey even went on to have her beautiful little daughter Madeline; despite her doctor saying she would never have any children. Where ever you are on your journey, remember all of your body parts are needed. Are important. Every single one of them. So never ever give one of them up without a fight. And look outside the medical box and learn about a NEW path to heal Endometriosis Naturally with me. To your health! Adam wants to know about cloning and Charlie makes amends with science.
We tell the story of Dolly the Sheep, talk about cloning, woolly mammoths, the concept of marsupial frogs (yes, we know...), Jurassic Park, spare parts for your body and for some reason ballet. Barnard Castle and New Zealand also raise their comedic heads again.
Dolly the sheep was born near Edinburgh, twenty years ago this summer. She was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult animal, (named after Dolly Parton because she was created from a breast cell). And became a global media star, inspiring both amazement that an animal be created with three mothers but no father, and fear. Many worried about where such a development might lead. The papers reported: 'dreaded possibilities are raised'; 'cloned sheep in Nazi storm'. Professor Ian Wilmut, the man who created Dolly, was compared to Frankenstein. Jim talked to Ian in front of an audience at the Edinburgh Festival and asked him why he decided to try and clone a sheep; how he and the team did it; and whether cloning humans is now a real possibility. Producer: Anna Buckley.

This week, we talk clones! We watched Darren Aronofsky's "The Fountain" and read Cat Patrick's "The Originals" and had all sorts of fun discussions on bald spacemen and Dolly The Sheep, among other things.
Richard Coles with comedienne Andi Osho, poet Murray Lachlan Young, Dr Bill Ritchie who helped create Dolly the Sheep, Philip Morrell, the Barnado's boy turned millionaire who's lending his boat to the Queen for the Jubilee, Patrick Newman who's trying to change the date of British Summer Time, a Soundscape of a guitar, and the Inheritance Tracks of arts guru Sir Christopher Frayling. Producer: JP Devlin.
This talk about cloning Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned, was given by Professor Keith Campbell to the knowledge transfer series in 2011. Professor Campbell is Professor of Animal Development at the University of Nottingham. He played a pivotal role in the creation of the first cloned mammal and was named joint winner of the 2008 Shaw Prize for Life Science and Medicine for his pioneering work in stem cell research.

This week on the Award Winning Naked Scientists we find out about stem cells and cloning. We discuss the elusive 'stemness' that allows cells to specialise, and learn about cloning in the post-Dolly the sheep era. We also find out how genetics has revealed that Neanderthals were redheads, how soap affects shoals of fish and some turtles come equipped with anti-roll bars. We also pay a visit to the Manchester Science Festival for a chat with Johnny Ball, and in Kitchen Science, we "clone at home" and find out the future of the humble banana. Like this podcast?
