Hello faithful Text Me Backolytes and welcome new listeners (we're sorry in advance to newbies! You could not have chosen a more wild starting place, but you'll catch on fast!). Today Lindy and Meagan kick off with a humble but necessary installment of Department of Corrections: Peter Edition. Apparently one of these colonizing yahoos from last week did, in fact, step foot in Washington State–but don't worry, we've decided to make that one a bonus Q so you can still graduate 8th grade. But the question remains: WHICH Peter from last week is the lucky boy to bless this mess? Tune in to find out. Then it's straight into Dog Thoughts, where we learn that Barry is a secret alpha?? You been listening to Joe Rogan, Bar???? Apparently, our gentle copper king does toxic male behavior at a public gathering and no amount of bully sticks–with or without Lindy's signature flavoring–can calm him down. Meanwhile, back at the Pennsylvanian Dutch Farm that is Meagan's condo, Kevin screams at ghosts in the living room. The vibes are unwell. And finally, the most Normalest News: Dire wolves have a moment in the sun before the reality of the situation is understood (GMO wolves are a little less cool to market than Dire Wolves so we don't NOT get it, but girl we need healthcare so can we focus, or????). And to round out our Normal News segment, Meagan brings us intel that people are body-shaming a mascot. SO NORMAL. Ellie the Elephant, we love you and you owe us NOTHING besides several headstands, fierce braid swings, and a liberal twerking of that ass on that court. And our 95%ers are in for a treat at the end where Lindy offers an unsolicited rotation of impersonations!!!!! Conservationist Paul Rosolie co-leads a non-profit deep in the Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon. Conserving forests beyond where law enforcement is willing to travel can be dangerous work, but his team successfully recruits former loggers to use their forest knowledge to become conservation rangers: this provides alternative income streams for communities and has attracted millions of dollars in funding. Today, this Indigenous-co-led nonprofit is responsible for protecting 55,000 acres of rainforest. In this episode, Rosolie shares his recipe for conservation success and what he thinks other conservation organizations can focus on to boost their effectiveness. It's the early 1900s, and the steamship El Dorado makes its way along the Amazon River towards Manaus, a city in the heart of the Brazilian rainforest. Onboard is the world-famous opera singer Florencia Grimaldi. She's got a gig at the opera house in Manaus, but that's just a cover. She's actually hoping for a reunion with her long-lost love, the butterfly catcher Cristóbal. But on the journey, Florencia learns that Cristóbal went missing in the rainforest while in pursuit of a rare butterfly. From the deck of the ship — and now in quarantine due to a cholera outbreak — she delivers her final aria, calling out to him, the river and the rainforest that surround her: “Escúchame.” Hear me, listen to me. “From you my song was born,” she affirms — and in embracing her love for him, she is released and reborn.Daniel Catán's lush and lyrical score has become a staple of contemporary operas, and its staging marks the Metropolitan Opera's first Spanish-language production in nearly 100 years. In this episode, host Rhiannon Giddens and her guests take us on a journey through natural wonder, transcendent love, and self-discovery.THE GUESTS Soprano Ailyn Pérez makes her Metropolitan Opera debut in her native language of Spanish as Florencia Grimaldi. She identifies with Florencia and the sacrifices that are sometimes necessary to pursue an artistic career.Andrea Puente-Catán is a harpist, director of development at Ballet Hispánico, and the widow of “Florencia” composer Daniel Catán. She met Catán when she was 17 years old. Decades later, playing harp in that opera's production at Palacia de Bellas Artes brought them back together. Author, filmmaker, and fearless traveler Alycin Hayes knows a thing or two about Amazonian adventures. When she was 21, she hitchhiked from her home in Canada to South America, where she met up with other roving internationals to paddle along the Amazon River in a dugout canoe.Paul Rosolie is conservationist, writer, and wildlife filmmaker whose memoir “Mother of God” details his extensive work in the Amazon. He's the founder and field director of Junglekeepers, a conservation outfit based in Peru, and he joins the show via a remote interview taped in the jungle.

“But at a purely personal level, Rondon embodied the best of both modern and old-fashioned virtues. He was intensely and genuinely patriotic, adhered to traditional codes of honor, bravery, and chivalry, and repeatedly demonstrated a moral rectitude that, enhanced a character both ascetic and abstemious, impressed those who regularly came into contact with him." Welcome back to another episode of Made You Think! In this episode, we're picking up the conversation on our favorite Brazilian explorer, Cândido Rondon, with Into the Amazon. Rohter's book dives into the untold stories of Rondon and Roosevelt, shining a spotlight on the uncharted territories, unique challenges, and extraordinary legacies left behind in the heart of the Amazon. We cover a wide range of topics including: Rondon's unique approach to exploration Animal and plant life within the Amazon How Rondon navigated each obstacle from sickness to river crossings Technology's impact on different generations The relationship between tech and human intelligence And much more. Please enjoy, and make sure to follow Nat, Neil, and Adil on Twitter and share your thoughts on the episode. Though not a direct sequel, it spins off of a previous episode on The River of Doubt, and gives us more insight into the life of Cândido Rondon. (1:57) In the era of great explorers, Rondon's discoveries were often overshadowed by the Europeans. Though he is very well-respected in Brazil, his accomplishments aren't as widely known in the US. (6:18) We talk a bit about Paul Rosolie and his preservation efforts in the Amazon rainforest, as well as why the forest felt empty in terms of wildlife throughout their exploration. (8:41) Rondon's peaceful demeanor and rationalist approach. He had a high tolerance and respect for the native tribes that he came across, and in return, they embraced him and his crew. (12:12) In addition to being an explorer, Rondon was a soldier. We also talk about Brazil's infrastructure advancements and how Rondon viewed the natives as Brazilian, whereas the Brazilian government hardly saw them as part of their people. (15:48) The friendship between Cândido Rondon and Theodore Roosevelt, and Roosevelt's profound respect for Rondon. We witness how Roosevelt's initial perception of Rondon transformed during their shared journeys, shedding light on Roosevelt's character and open-mindedness. (20:43) The rich history of Rondon's story is preserved through detailed diaries and journals kept by the explorers. The survival of these records is nothing short of miraculous when you consider the conditions they were in on their journey. (22:21) Meta's new AI features where you can talk to different personalities, based on the topics that you're interested in. (25:35) Rondon had opoprtunities to go down many paths in his life. He had developed several unique skills very early on in his childhood, yet exploring the Amazon is ultimately what he chose to pursue. (30:48) There were several elements to Rondon that uncovered as we read Into the Amazon that we may not have realized while reading The River of Doubt. Very military-like, Rondon created order for their day and took leadership on their expedition. (35:17) We share some badass Rondon stories that stuck out to us, including how he navigated a seemingly improbable river crossing with all of the cargo of his crew. (39:30) When times got tough and supplies ran low, Rondon always stuck to the mission. (42:31) Deforestation and its long-term consequences. Plant life is so dense in the Amazon; if it ever gets cleared out, it'd be near impossible to bring it back to what it once was. (47:13) The effects of global shipping traffic and it's pollution into the atmosphere. (50:32) The later years of Rondon was more of a focus in this book vs. The River of Doubt. We discuss his family life, which included a wife and 7 children. They communicated via telegrams throughout his many missions and projects where he was forced to be away from home. (57:40) Einstein had heard so much about Rondon during his time in Brazil that he submitted a Nobel Peace Prize nomination for him without even meeting him. (1:00:34) Your body always tells you what you need. If Rondon is sick? Just give him some pineapple! (1:01:31) Though Rondon is framed as a tough explorer, he was also an intellectual. He documented a lot of the indigenous languages and transcribed it based on his interactions with the tribes. (1:04:45) Tangent time: Which celebrities could potentially run for office, and who is big enough to have their names still referrenced after their passing? (1:07:39) Our thoughts on the movie Idiocracy and theories on the relationship between technology and intelligence levels. Will our generation always be the most technological competent generation? (1:15:09) How technology has shaped generations differently, especially Gen Z and Millenials. (1:20:33) We throw it back to when we were younger, talking about different devices that were around then and how they compare to the more modern, current models. (1:23:08) The development of Apple, and how they were able to shift so elegantly from the iPod to bigger and better devices. (1:29:01) We throw out some ideas of books to cover in future episodes. Which ones stuck out to you? Let us know! (1:40:48) That wraps up this episode! Make sure to pick up a copy of Into the Amazon if you liked this episode. It's so much more than “climate change”.The most biodiverse regions of the world are under threat. Beyond the models, the data, the papers and the Twitter spats, the world's ecosystems are collapsing under the pressure of mankind's interference, extraction and exploitation. The Amazon, the world's largest tropical rainforest, has been mined, plumbed and sawed for its resources to the extent it may soon become a carbon emitter as its systems begin to decay. Protecting it is vital in the fight against our own destruction. Paul Rosolie set out to do just that when he was 18 years old.Paul is a conservationist, writer, speaker, filmmaker, protecting 55000+ acres of Amazonian habitat and wildlife Director of JungleKeepers and Tamandua Expeditions. His memoir, Mother of God, documents his years spent deep in the jungle fighting to save it. Paul joins me to discuss this and more. He reveals the gifts of the Amazon and the lessons to be learned from its inhabitants. He also explains the limitations of typical conservation efforts due to the pressures of our globalised financial system. Finally, he gives a vision for what conservation could be in the future—and a call to action for those who understand the depth of the emergency.Planet: Critical investigates why the world is in crisis—and what to do about it. What We Discuss with Paul Rosolie: How Paul Rosolie and his JungleKeepers team showcase sustainable and profitable alternatives to illegal logging and mining for locals — and their descendants — to prosper. Why many uncontacted tribes in the Amazon react to intrusion by outsiders with extreme violence — even when the outsiders demonstrate the best of intentions. How invasive and inefficient gold mining by armed, organized criminals from places as far away as Russia is turning once lush rainforests into mercury-poisoned wastelands. Efforts being made to harness medicinal compounds unique to the Amazon — and the knowledge to use them — and prevent them from disappearing for good. Even if you need to slim down for beach season, Paul doesn't recommend getting lost in the unforgiving Amazon — where he shed a pound a day simply trying to survive before finding his way back to civilization. And much more... Growing up in New Jersey, conservationist, author, and award-winning filmmaker, Paul Rosolie would much rather be outdoors testing his own survival skills than in a classroom. As a young boy he was fascinated by rainforests. Even before graduating college, he had formed an ecotourism company with his mentor Juan Julio Durand. Proceeds from leading ecotours to some of the most remote and dangerous regions in the world are used to purchase and protect pristine patches of the Peruvian rainforest. Paul is also founder of Junglekeepers, which conserves thousands of acres of threatened habitat in the vitally important Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon. The Las Piedras watershed is part of the Andes/Amazon hotspot—one of the most biodiverse and pristine areas on earth. Animal Care Software KONG Zoo Zoo Logic Podcast

About Paul Rosolie Paul Rosolie is a naturalist, explorer, author, and award winning wildlife filmmaker. For the past 16 years he has specialized in threatened ecosystems and species in countries like Indonesia, Brazil, India, and Peru. In the Amazon, Rosolie has spent extensive time traveling with poachers documenting the illegal trade in endangered species. Rosolie's memoir on Amazonian wildlife and exploration, “Mother of God”, was hailed as “gripping” by Jane Goodall, and the Wall Street Journal applauded Rosolie's environmental call-to-arms for its ‘rare immediacy and depth'. In 2013 Rosolie spoke at the United Nations global Forum on Forests while accepting an award for his Amazonian wildlife short-film ‘An Unseen World”. He is the co-founder of Junglekeepers Peru an organization that focuses on protecting threatened habitat in western Amazonia. To date, Junglekeepers protects over 55,000 acres of primary forest Junglekeepers conserves threatened habitat in the vitally important Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon. The Las Piedras watershed is part of the Andes/Amazon hotspot—one of the most biodiverse and pristine areas on earth. This forest is home to tens of millions of trees, numerous indigenous communities, and untold numbers of animal heartbeats. In recent decades new roads, illegal logging, poaching, and gold mining have begun to seriously degrade the ancient forest that is the source of life in this region. Junglekeepers Rangers patrol and safeguard almost 30,000 acres of this incredible landscape. It is central to the Junglekeepers ethos to employ and train local and indigenous community members in the active protection of land that is ultimately theirs. Forest Rangers monitor our concessions, maintain trails and report any illegal activity occurring on the land being monitored. Rangers also track wildlife to contribute to broader scientific datasets in the region. For local Peruvians, our Ranger Program also offers an employment alternative to protect the land rather than being forced to participate in harmful activity due to economic pressure. Our current and past rangers tell us this work is a great source of pride as it empowers them in the stewardship of their homeland. His story found in his book "Mother of God" is a must read, but if you like to get to know the author first, then check this out. Paul and I talk about how he got his education in spite of the school system and now is the author of two books. He operates an eco-tourism company in the upper Amazon of Peru called Tamandua Expeditions. Want to experience the Amazonian rainforest firsthand? Now you know who to call! Paul swims with piranhas, hunts anacondas, has spent multiple nights alone in the jungle and is now on my podcast to talk about it. His message is clear...we know what to do to stop the destruction of Earth's ecosystems, so we just need to do it! Paul Rosolie is an author, conservationist, and adventurer. He's written two books. His first book, Mother of God, is about the years he spent in the Peruvian Amazon. He recounts stories of wrestling down giant anacondas, plunging in the river after caiman, coming face-to-face with jaguars, and solo journeys deep into uncharted parts of the jungle. Paul's second book The Girl and the Tiger is a beautiful story about a girl in India who finds a tiger cub. The book addresses many of the important issues with tiger and elephant conservation in India. Paul was the star of a 2014 nature documentary special on the Discovery Channel called Eaten Alive. In the show, he was going to be eaten by an anaconda in the Amazon. The show drew a lot of criticism from many groups, and even Paul himself who wasn't happy with the way it turned out. But he explains that it was a massive learning experience and he remains dedicated to his conservation efforts. Paul is a very passionate conservationist, but he has a different perspective than many others. He is the co-founder of Tamandua Expeditions, which takes visitors of tours into the Amazon. He also founded JungleKeepers, which hires locals as rangers to help protect the Amazon and stop illegal activities like logging or poaching. In the following order (just so as you know who is speaking) I speak to Jonny Rankin, turtle dove pilgrim, about using wildlife to achieve personal and physical change; author Stephen Moss covers some of his most special birding memories; Dame Fiona Reynolds talks about the importance of beauty in making conservation happen; Debbie Pain and then Annette Fayet talk about the power of science to help us unlock undiscovered secrets in the natural world; Paul Rosolie describes why he wanted to travel unaccompanied into the uncharted depths of the Peruvian rainforest; Alan Rabinowitz recalls his childhood promise (now fulfilled many times over) to save big cats; wildlife photographer Tom Mason talks about how to set yourself apart as an artist; my grandfather, Tony Paine, describes an idyllic childhood in the countryside while Britain fought the Second World War; Ben Eagle and Pete Cooper talk with me about the hot topic of raptor persecution; and finally Chloe Revill describes how her immersive Change in Nature retreats help people reconnect with nature and might even motivate them to do more to save it. I’ve already got some very exciting conversations planned for 2018, so I really hope that you keep listening. Thank you so much if you’ve listened in 2017. But for the next few days have a restful holiday period and I hope you manage to fit in some wild time outdoors with your loved ones.
This conversation is with Paul Rosolie, explorer and naturalist, author of 'Mother of God: one man's journey to the uncharted depths of the Amazon rainforest'. We talk about Paul's childhood love of wildlife and his struggles with the education system, his workout regime for staying in shape for the jungle, his state of mind when he ventures on solo expeditions and very close-up encounters with big cats and giant anacondas, as well as his views on the future of conservation. Find out more about Paul at paulrosolie.com.
In Heart of Darkness, Conrad spoke of exploring up river with a “general sense of vague and oppressive wonder. Like a weary pilgrimage amongst hints of nightmare.”Paul Rosolie made a journey into his own heart of darkness, as he engaged in an extraordinary adventure into the uncharted tributaries of the Western Amazon. He writes about his experiences in Mother of God: An Extraordinary Journey into the Uncharted Tributaries of the Western Amazon. Paraphrasing Conrad, Rosolie conveys the life-sensation of his existence--that which gives his story its truth, its meaning--its subtle and penetrating essence. My conversation with Paul Rololie:
