The recent Paris Olympics has just passed and may already be fading into memory. This year Team Taiwan won 2 gold medals and 5 bronze at the Olympics. Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/my-conversation-with-mike-chinoy-award-winning-journalist-on-his-new-film-decathalon-ep-290/ Do you know when and who won Taiwan's first Olympic medal? It happened at the 1960 Rome Olympics, which was the first Summer Olympics that was televised in North America. The man who was known as the “Iron Man of Asia,” C.K. Yang won a silver medal in the decathlon. C.K. was of the Amis indigenous tribe from southeastern Taiwan. His Amis name was Maysang Kalimud, but then Japan colonized Taiwan he had a Japanese name when, and then after the Chinese Nationalists the Kuomintang lost the civil war in China to the Chinese Communist and fled to Taiwan, his father gave him a Chinese name, Yang Chuan-kwang.  Like many Amis, he used his athletic prowess to gain status and success that might otherwise have eluded him. But not much is known about how heavily he identified as Amis.   The gold medal winner at the Rome Olympics was Rafer Johnson, an African American.   Rafer and C.K. trained together under the same coach at UCLA and then competed against each other in the decathlon at the Rome Olympics. They were not only rivals but also the best of friends.   Their extraordinary and unlikely friendship inspired the making of a documentary film and I sat down recently to speak with Mike Chinoy, the co-creator, co-writer, and co-producer of that film which is called "Decathlon: The CK Yang and Rafer Johnson Story,”   Mike Chinoy is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the University of Southern California's US-China Institute and is based in Taipei. Previously, he spent 24 years as a foreign correspondent for CNN, serving as the network's first Beijing bureau chief and as Senior Asia Correspondent.   "Decathlon: The CK Yang and Rafer Johnson Story" is currently streaming on the Taiwan Plus Docs YouTube channel.   Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: ·       Team Taiwan's performance during the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris ·       How flags and signs in the shape of Taiwan or with the word Taiwan on them were confiscated from fans during the men's doubles badminton finals at the Paris Olympics ·       How China's state-run broadcaster CCTV cut the feed during parts of the men's badminton doubles match and did not broadcast the medal ceremony ·       Why Taiwan has to compete under the name “Chinese Taipei” at the Olympics ·       The “Iron Man of Asia” ·       The man that won Taiwan's first Olympic medal ·       C.K. Yang was Amis and had three names, an Amis name (Maysang Kalimud), a Japanese name and a Chinese name (Yang Chuan-kwang, 楊傳廣) ·       How C.K. first met Rafer Johnson at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 ·       How C.K. and Rafer were trained by the same coach at UCLA and became close friends ·       The International Olympic Committee (I.O.C) told the government of Chiang Kai-shek that the team sent to participate at the 1960 Rome Olympics could not be called the Republic of China ·       Chiang Kai-shek almost boycotted the Olympics but didn't because he realized that C.K. Yang could possibly win a medal and bring glory to Taiwan ·       How Taiwan competed under the name Formosa during the 1960 Rome Olympics ·       C.K. Yang was the first person with a Chinese surname to win an Olympic medal ·       At the opening ceremony of the 1960 Rome Olympics Rafer Johnson was the first African American to carry the American flag at the Olympics ·       At the opening ceremony of the 1960 Rome Olympics, the Taiwan team marched in carrying a placard that said under protest, which was the first overt political protest by a team in Olympics history ·       Where the idea for "Decathlon: The CK Yang and Rafer Johnson Story" came from ·       How Mike's co-creator, co-writer, and co-producer, John Krich sought out, befriended and interviewed C.K. Yang in 2006 ·       How Mike met and befriended Rafer Johnson and C.K.'s widow Daisy in Los Angeles ·       Taiwanese Canadian film director of "Decathlon: The CK Yang and Rafer Johnson Story," Frank W. Chen also directed “Late Life: The Chien-Ming Wang Story” ·       How C.K. Yang, Rafer Johnson and athletes have become political symbols ·       How C.K. Yang and Rafer Johnson were intense athletic rivals and close friends ·       The close personal friendship between C.K. Yang and Rafer Johnson ·       How C.K. Yang and Rafer Johnson had the same coach, Ducky Drake at UCLA ·       How C.K. Yang and Rafer Johnson joked that they were the “Two-Man United Nations” ·       How C.K. Yang's story tells the story of Taiwan in an unconventional way ·       Why C.K. was sent to UCLA to train for the Olympics ·       The 1958 Kinmen Matsu Crisis (aka The 1958 Taiwan Strait Crisis) ·       How C.K. Yang and Rafer Johnson's coach, Ducky Drake showed no favoritism ·       When U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1968, Rafer was next to him, Rafer grabbed the assassin, tackled him and grabbed the gun ·       Rafer's involvement in the Special Olympics ·       What happened to C.K. at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics ·       C.K. later became the coach of the Taiwan track team for the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada ·       Why the team from Taiwan was barred from participating in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal ·       Rafer Johnson lit the flame at the 1984 Olympic games in L.A. ·       How C.K. went into politics briefly in Taiwan, switching from one party to another ·       The Iron Man house that the government of Taiwan built for C.K. ·       How statues of C.K. are in a locked fourth floor room of the National Sports Training Center in Kaohsiung ·       There cover of Sports Illustrated magazine in 1963 with the headline “ C.K. Yang, the world's greatest athlete.” ·       The tremendous sportsmanship and loyalty that C.K. and Rafer exemplify ·       C.K.'s performance at 1954 Asian Games in Manilla ·       The use of animation in "Decathlon: The CK Yang and Rafer Johnson Story," ·       The National Sports Training Center in Kaohsiung ·       How the film addresses the Taiwan, China conflict, and the fight for social justice and equality in the United States;  64 years later the world is still wrestling with these issues ·       Mike's future projects   Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/my-conversation-with-mike-chinoy-award-winning-journalist-on-his-new-film-decathalon-ep-290/

It all started when one of his coworkers/friend decided to return to India from Sweden to take over his ancestral property. His friend was dismayed at the destruction that the fashion industry had caused to the lands owned by his family for three generations in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, India. When they started to talk to leading sustainable brands in Sweden to see if they collaborate with factories in India, they were hesitant to work with companies 1000s of miles away as they wouldn't be able to control the products and quality. After talking to these brands they developed a B2B SaaS platform that empowers fashion and textile brands to fully understand and take responsibility for the social and environmental impact of their supply chains. The company is the one-stop platform for brands aiming to solve major challenges of sustainability, compliance, and transparency in the supply chains. They track transactions and scope certificates in a standardized, digital format using an AI-driven platform. S2-E4. Relationships to Experience: The secret sauce to retain your customers

Welcome to Season 2 of the Be Empactful Podcast. This is Episode 4 of this season where we are exploring how to build Sustainable Businesses. Business leaders have always focussed on how customers are the ‘reason for being' for any company. Companies and Businesses often focus on providing the best customer service to keep them satisfied. This is more reactive to customer actions and looks to satisfy the customer after they have been expressed. With the advent of more digital tools and technology in business, the focus is now shifted to predicting customer requirements and building deep customer relationships - based on past actions and activity. With the ubiquity and omnichannel coming into purview, we are now moving into delivering Customer Experiences, every touchpoint - offline, online, digital, or physical. The upcoming need is now to shape customer requirements - influence them into looking beyond their current buying patterns. From personal experiences at a favorite restaurant to the Holiday Inn Group, we share examples of businesses that understand customer patterns and provide services before the customer asks for them. Businesses like Decathalon, a sporting goods chain, and Apple are taking this forward to provide a unique experience to every client who interacts with them - ensuring that the customer has all the information they need to make a decision and are comfortable asking for more. The customer today is part of a larger community, which is adding to the overall buying experience and in turn the customer satisfaction - resulting in better business for the company. Native Place and Hubspot are examples of companies that have used the community to understand, shape, influence, and deliver what the customer needs - making them very sustainable in the long run. This week, The Musafir Stories speaks to a very dear guest - Ajitha Yasmin, a long time listener and winner of the "Get Featured on the Musafir Stories" contest we ran on International Podcast Day earlier this year. Today's destination: Chadar Trek on the frozen Zanskar river, Jammu & Kashmir Nearest Airport: Leh Airport, IXL Nearest Railway Station: NA Prerequisites - Some experience in trekking is preferred, although not mandatory Packing - Make sure to either pack winter clothes or buy them in Leh. Decathalon is a good option in your city as well. Equipment is usually taken care of by the trek company. Time of the year - January Length of the itinerary: 6 day trek, 2 day acclimatization Itinerary Highlights: The 12 people strong team, set off after a day of acclimatization in Leh with a stopover at Magnetic hill. The trek kicks off at Chiling from where the group heads off on a 70km trek over 6 days. The trek goes through some interesting terrain with different formations of ice over the Zanskar river. The early hours are tricky with the team having to negotiate some thin layers of ice. The first stop for the night is Shingra where the team camps. Periodic oxygen level checks are performed by the trek company to ensure that everyone is good health. The trek continues through some magnificent terrain, covering icy sheets to frozen streams. The stop of the day is at Tibb caves, a point of meeting of two mountain ranges. The team also enjoy some good vegetarian food along with Thukpa, the tibetan soupy noodles. The final day of the onward journey ends at Nerak waterfalls - a frozen waterfall that is one of the iconic points of the trek at over 11,000 ft. The return journey is along the same path but on th other side of the frozen river bank. The team enjoys interacting with the local porters and share some hummable songs and the evergreen calls of Julley! Explore Europe Mont Blanc Trail Podcast Episode Show Notes Here are the show notes for this episode of Explore Europe brought to you by Used Car Guys. The Tour du Mont Blanc is a unique trek of approximately 200km around Mont Blanc that can be completed in between 7 and 10 days passing through Italy, Switzerland and France. It’s one of the most famous and exhilarating treks in Europe. Hikers, climbers and mountaineers will love the authenticity of the overnights offered by mountain refuges and gites along the Tour du Mont Blanc. Our special guest, Kaiserslautern school music teacher Gretchen Lynch, explains that you do not need to be a hardcore mountaineer to do the Mont Blanc Trail. She shares her short version of the trail with us along with all of her tips that will ensure even total beginners to hiking can accomplish this unforgetful bucket-list trek.  Here are some detailed notes and links from our Explore Europe Mont Blanc Trail episode:  Website about Tour:  http://www.autourdumontblanc.com/en/ What to bring - everything fits fine in a 30L backpack from Decathalon. fold up hiking poles lightweight gloves and hat sleep sack, sleep clothes poncho 2 pairs of hiking shorts and shirts long sleeved micofiber shirt light fleece Sunscreen & bugspray toiletries, microfibre towel gallon ziplock bags to keep clothes dry in case it rains YakTrax or crampons if you hike early in the season for the snow crossings ear plugs good hiking shoes flip flops if you don’t want to wear the ones provided (I brought them but they were not necessary!) cell phone and charger, - get one that works in Switzerland hydration bladder or water bottles Pack light - you are carrying everything! Entire tour takes about 2 weeks.  We did half of the tour, but took a bus through the mountain from Chamonix France to Courmayeur Italy to cut our tour to one week.  The bus is just 15 Euro per person. We parked near the trail’s end in Chamonix.  It was free and so nice to come out right near our car when we finished a week later! We put our kids in camp so we could do this as a couples trip (we went with another couple whose daughter stayed with family friends.) Germany’s sleepaway camps are very affordable compared to the United States.  We have been very happy with Camp Adventure which offers one and two week sessions and is a bilingual camp, so everything is in both English and German. https://www.campadventure.de/en/  Each day you hike about 6 hours and then stay in a refuge. Refuges are like hostels, but they are on the hiking route (many high in mountains and must be stocked by donkeys or helicopters!) and almost always provide breakfast and dinner. For about 10 Euros you can also buy a sack lunch for your hike. Price per night ranged from 41 (and that one was our favorite!) to 70 Euros per person.   We hiked through three countries - starting in Italy, then Switzerland, and finished in France. The main language on the train was French, even in Italy. We didn’t hear German at all! The refuges all had English speaking staff and most of the hikers also spoke English. Other than lodging, our only costs on the trip were gas (we filled in Germany near the border and didn’t have to refuel til we got back home), the 15 Euro bus ticket, lunches (either 10 sack lunches from the refuges or purchased from grocery stores along the route), coffees along the route, and wine/ beer at the refuges. Beer was pricey compared to Europe - about 7 Euros for a half litre, 4 for .33 litre. House wine was about 8-12 for a half litre carafe to share at dinner. Make sure you take out both Francs (get at an ATM on the drive down) and Euros and have enough cash to pay for both your lodging - they almost always only take cash - and your lunches/ snacks/ drinks. You can pay in Euros in Switzerland but you will get a bad exchange rate - like Euro for Dollar. BOOK YOUR TRIP IN ADVANCE. We made the mistake of waiting too long and some of the refuges were full, therefore instead of having nice even 6 hour hiking days, we had one day that was 2 hours and one day that was 10! Dinner is generally served starting at 6:30 or 7pm, so you need to be at your refuge prior to that. Breakfast is normally at 7am. Check out the website and see if there is damage to the trails. If so you will have to amend your route. THE VIEWS ARE GORGEOUS. Just GORGEOUS. The entire way. You will never really be high enough up to get Altitude sickness. But you have views of higher mountains since you climb a loop around the Mont Blanc range. Our favorite refuge was Gite Le Moulin in Argentiere. The owner cooked the most AMAZING French cuisine. All the food we had on the trip was good, and specific to the country we were in. Pasta in Italy, baked Swiss cheese in Switzerland etc. I believe all of the refuges could cater to Vegetarians/ Gluten Free etc. if contacted in advance. It IS important to be in pretty good shape for the trip. You don’t have to be an amazing athlete, but definitely have good cardiovascular fitness. If you aren’t regularly exercising you might want to spend the three months before the trip doing some uphill treadmill walking or find some good trails in the area and use them. For the most part the trail isn’t dangerous, but there were a few snow crossings, stream crossings, and a couple places with steep drop offs. All of the drop offs had wire ropes to hold on to. There was a trail at the end with a long section of ladders and cables. I’m afraid of heights and found this scary, but it is possible to avoid that section by taking an alternate route. Best time of year to hike is July, August, or September. We did the last week of June which was still early and much of the snow wasn’t melted. You can’t really do any earlier than that. Early October would likely be chilly but still okay.   Podcast Conversation Timeline:  00:01 - Introduction to our wonderful episode on the Mont Blanc trail 1:22 - What brings Gretchen to Germany? 2:18 - How did Gretchen meet her Husband? 03:54 - Where are we exploring today and why should we do it? 05:23 - How dangerous is it to climb Mont Blanc? 06:20 - Can you take the family to Mont Blanc? 08:15 - Details of  Day 1 of Gretchen’s Mont Blanc adventure 10:42 -  Day 1: Accommodation and tips on booking accomodation at different times of year 12:32 - Food at the hostels and accomodation - what to expect 13:15 - Were there any language barriers?
