What if your identity is a tapestry of diverse threads, each contributing to a complex, vibrant whole? This episode invites you to uncover the intricate intersections of queerness and autism with our insightful guest, Danny, an autistic and queer existential coach. Danny's journey of self-discovery as a queer person with a late autism diagnosis sheds light on the unique experiences of feeling like an outsider while embracing the strengths and challenges of neurodivergence. Through personal stories and reflections, we explore the nuanced overlap of queer and autistic identities, emphasizing the richness and authenticity they bring to life. Our conversation delves into the intertwining nature of gender and sexual identities, examining concepts like "autigender" and the impact of societal pressures. With poignant narratives from the restrictive era of Section 28 in the UK, we discuss the complexities of navigating identity amidst homophobic bullying and varying societal acceptance. Danny shares their experiences in academia and coaching, highlighting the importance of visibility and representation for marginalized communities. By critically examining traditional perspectives and incorporating subjective experiences, we consider how educational programs can evolve to embrace inclusivity and diversity. We also tackle broader societal issues, such as internalized stigma and the responsibilities we all share in fostering understanding and safety for marginalized groups. Danny guides us through the political landscape, exploring the potential for progressive change and the crucial role empathy plays in bridging divides. This episode challenges us to engage with diverse viewpoints and advocate for inclusive, meaningful dialogues. With a focus on promoting social change through empathy, we aim to inspire listeners to embrace a more inclusive and authentic approach to understanding identity. This Podcast is sponsored by Onlinevents

In this episode of Coaching Uncaged Animas Centre Director Robert Stephenson is joined by Existential Coach, Trainer and Author Sasha van Deurzen-Smith to explore what we mean by existential coaching, and what existential approaches bring to the coaching dynamic. Sasha shares the work that she is currently doing around existentialism, and neurodiversity, touching on her co-authored project which shines a light on existential coaching for adults with an autism spectrum condition. Sasha also shares exciting news around her work on the intersectionality of the LGBTQ+ community that also have an autism spectrum condition, and being approached to advise for next year's pride event in Houston, Texas as a result. Robert and Sasha explore what we mean when we talk about existentialism, before diving into fascinating topics such as the dizzying and confusing nature of ‘freedom' when considered through an existential lens, the notion of valid anxieties as opposed to something that needs to be fixed, and the idea that as humans we are always in the process of becoming, and never in a fixed, static state.  Sasha also shares what's next for her, and some more information around the upcoming existential CPD course, including some of the key existential philosophical themes and voices that are explored, what's covered and some of the key takeaways people can expect from the weekend of training.  We hope that you enjoy this episode, and don't forget to subscribe and follow for a new episode every Tuesday! Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: bit.ly/new-lectures An existential crisis is a situation in which our entire existence and everything we used to take for granted is in the balance, so that we feel insecure and threatened. This affects all dimensions of life, at the physical, social, personal and spiritual levels. It means that our bodies are challenged, our relationships are changed, our sense of our self is altered, and our beliefs and values are shaken up. For most people this is a very difficult experience to encompass as it leads to a total revolution of our established patterns, routines and habits. It always involves a lot of loss and therefore leads to feelings of bereavement and sorrow as well as to experiences of confusion, fear, anger, doubt and panic. In this presentation we shall consider how existential philosophers and therapists are able to make sense of such situations, be they caused by politics, society, personal choices or natural catastrophes. We shall explore the relationship between the shattering of our most reliable connections to the world and the loss of meaning. Then we shall consider how we can rise to such limit situations and personal challenges, finding ways to thrive instead of being destroyed by radical change, transforming and transcending our previous existence. Emmy van Deurzen is a philosopher, counselling psychologist and existential psychotherapist. She has founded and directed a number of training organizations and continues to be the Principal of the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling at the Existential Academy in London. Existential Approaches to Human Development – Martin Adams

What is life for, existentially? We are born and then we die and our life task is to make something of the time in between with no way of knowing how long we have got. In living towards an unknown future we are challenged daily with the paradox that while life will always be a mystery, it is this that makes life worth living. So, what do we mean when we say that human beings develop, and what are the limits to human potential? In the first part of this talk, Martin will look at what six existential philosophers, Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Simone de Beauvoir have said about how we become who we are. In the second part, he will draw out some common themes and relate these to everyday life and by implication, to therapeutic practice. Martin Adams is an existential psychotherapist, lecturer, supervisor and writer. He is a visiting lecturer at Regents University and the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling in London. Martin is the author of several books, including: ‘A Concise Introduction to Existential Counselling', ‘Skills in Existential Counselling and Psychotherapy' which he co-authored with Emmy van Deurzen, and most recently: An Existential Approach to Human Development', which was published by Palgrave in 2018. He has contributed to Case Studies in Existential Therapy and to the Wiley World Handbook for Existential Therapy. In his spare time, he is also a sculptor. This is Chris's second podcast with Sarah. In the first, which is episode seven of this series, you can hear her backstory, some of her work-related achievements, and her approach to learning and to self-care. They gave this podcast the somewhat ambitious title of “the leader as philosopher, learner and listener” and imagined that it might be more of a conversation than an interview. Sarah has said previously that our politicians are no longer philosophers. She believes this matters because we live in a volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous (VUCA) world and things are grey rather than black and white. Philosophers embrace the idea that changing our mind is a legitimate, in fact healthy, thing to do. And politics matters more than we might imagine: politicians enact the laws that govern our everyday lives. Chris thinks that there are parallels in business. His favourite quote is from Emmy van Deurzen, who is an existential psychotherapist, and she says “Passive living comes easily; one can always fall back on it. Actively living requires much practice and study, as does any art.” Sarah is a big fan of the stoics. Stoicism acknowledges that life is a struggle and rarely goes according to plan. It helps her to appreciate the highs but not get too attached to them and to weather the lows in the knowledge that they too will pass. We have a tendency to ‘gloss over' things when they aren't OK and to say that they'll be better in the future. In reality when one challenge goes away another will replace it. Chris would say that it helps in an organisation if the leader has a clear sense of purpose and can articulate what the current struggle is for. Without such meaning the organisation is in danger of becoming a product of the system in which it operates. Chris cites Tracy Allen (episode 12) as such a leader. For Sarah values and purpose help with prioritisation. However, she understands why some people don't have clarity around values and purpose; she says “it's scary.” Chris says it's what Jean Paul Sartre would have described as “existential angst”, the anxiety caused by a person's awareness of her unlimited freedom and the corresponding responsibility. In his book ‘Compassionate Leadership' Chris includes ‘a spiritual journey' under routes to development and asks Sarah where she is on that journey. Buddhism and the stoics have been reference points for her, along with Alain de Botton, Christian Tippett and David Whyte. Chris describes himself right now as a ‘Christian Existentialist.' He believes in God, but also believes we need to take personal responsibility. He has found the books of Richard Rohr helpful, along with a lot of one-to-one conversations. He has come to a point where he can be comfortable with uncertainty. Sarah says that “a lot of therapy” has helped her, as have podcasts, in that you hear people's thought processes out loud. When it comes to helping leaders clarify their values and purpose, Sarah sometimes uses the question “Which are those moments in your life when you have most thrived?” Beyond philosophy, there's a whole lot more for a leader to master. Chris makes the distinction between informational learning – lectures, training, what passes for learning in most universities and business schools – and transformational learning – learning that enhances our ability to handle complex thoughts and ideas, and to consider our thoughts themselves objectively. Sarah says that she thinks this idea is useful and that transformational learning helps us close the gap between the knowing and the doing. For each person, the nature of the transformational experience that is most effective will be different, but what is important is that we get out there and experiment. Sarah recommends the writing of Seth Godin, who writes so well about mustering the courage to experiment. Both Sarah and Chris agree that talking with friends can be transformational, and Chris cites a book group that he is in where...

A discussion on existentialism and terrorism DescriptionThe robotic revolution is here and there s no going back. From the way we raise our children, to our work settings, to our governments, and even our wars, the quick fix-instant result society is roiling our world. Yet what is lost in this delirium is depth, the awesomeness, not just of our machines, but of our flesh, our capacity to feel, and our capacity to dwell in the miracle of the unknown. This book dwells in the miracle of the unknown. It is an intimate trek into the evolving spirituality of awe--the humility and wonder; sense of adventure toward life. Can we preserve awe--the arguable "heart" of humanity--in spite of and even in light of our technologies? Or will we devolve into mechanically driven puppets, numb to our possibilities, blind to our servitude? There is no more critical problem for our age."ReviewThe dehumanization of life in the new computer driven society...leads to a gradual death of feeling. When people are cut off from feeling they are more likely to act out in destructive and potentially violent behavior. In The Spirituality of Awe, Kirk Schneider elaborates the negative consequences of what he calls the Robotic Revolution. In this important book, the author offers an alternative in his conception of an awe-based psychology that emphasizes both the mystery and magnificence of existence. I am personally inspired by Schneider s concern and ethical approach to coping with the problem of maintaining one s human heritage in the new society. --Robert Firestone, Ph.D., author of Overcoming the Destructive Inner Voice: True Stories of Therapy and Transformation, and (with Joyce Catlett) Beyond Death Anxiety: Achieving Life-affirming Death AwarenessIn a world where many feel dehumanized and devalued, we need courage and clarity to widen our perspective and find new purpose. In this book Kirk Schneider offers a sensitive and incisive new narrative to help us reconsider what our lives are about today. He gathers wisdom from his long experience, and freely combines this with the insights of psychology, psychotherapy, philosophy, sociology, religion, literature and cinema to create a new vision of where we are heading and how we may change direction before it is too late. In this final essay, psychotherapist Emmy Van Deurzen reflects on how existentialist philosophy has shaped her life and work. She grew up in the Netherlands, but went as a student to France, where she read philosophy and later studied psychotherapy. Her work in the two fields led her to want to follow an existentialist path- to pursue a form of therapy which was rooted in philosophy. She now lives and teaches in England, where she works with clients on using moments of crisis in their lives for positive action.Producer: Emma KingsleyThe Existential Me was first broadcast in November 2013 to mark the centenary of the birth of Albert Camus.
