Tropical Cyclone Ilsa has made landfall in Western Australia with warnings it is the strongest storm seen in the state for almost 15 years. It powered up to a category 5 storm, the strongest possible category, as it neared land. Ilsa crossed land just after midnight (WA time) on Friday morning with winds speeds approaching 300kmh. It hit the Pilbara region near the Pardoo Roadhouse and De Grey, 150 km north of Port Hedland and 450km south of Broome. The storm is now officially record breaking, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), has confirmed. It set a new preliminary Australian 10-minute sustained wind speed record of 218km/h at Bedout Island, just off the WA coast. Cyclone George in 2007 hit 194km/h for 10 minutes at the same location. “The very destructive core of Ilsa, with extreme gusts up to 295 km/h is impacting areas near Pardoo Roadhouse and De Grey during the next few hours, before tracking inland,” the BOM said. Winds of around 150km/h could be felt inland in areas including Marble Bar and Telfer. While 90km/h winds may hit Port Hedland. Cyclone Ilsa was expected to strike Western Australia by Friday. Photo / Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology From 150 to 300mm of rain is likely around coastal areas near Illsa's eye during Friday. WA's Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) issued a red alert just hours ahead of Tropical Cyclone Ilsa making landfall warning of fierce winds up which had already reached 285km/h. Extremely destructive winds of up to 315km/h are expected around the centre of Ilsa The red alert covers people between Bidyadanga and Port Hedland (not including Bidyadanga) and inland to Marble Bar and Nullagine. “Stay indoors now. It is too late to leave,” said the DFES. Those in the red alert zone need to seek shelter immediately, and hunker down until the danger has passed. “The forecast for tomorrow is that it will maintain tropical cyclone intensity as it tracks past Telfer and further inland. Telfer could experience destructive winds up to 170 kmh,” said DFES. The Bureau of Meteorology's Todd Smith said Ilsa would cause a lot of damage to the landscape, and buildings that weren't up to code. “We know that this system is really packing a punch,” he said. “Category five cyclones are incredibly dangerous, with wind gusts in excess of 250km/h,” he said. “That's going to cause a heap of damage to trees, vegetation, if there were any caravans around they would be destroyed. “Any houses that aren't built to code are going to suffer extensive damage from that kind of wind strength.” - Benedict Brook & Alex Blair, news.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Listener Helen shared her WOTS that the Department of Fire and Emergency Services has pulled it's support from the annual Perth Firefighters Calendar as they don't believe it aligns with their values. Gareth Deeg, Committee Member of the Perth Firefighters Calendar told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that the rumour is not true that DFES has pulled their support. "They still support the calendar in a number of ways but through consultation, we as a committee have decided to move away, as we have created our own brand through the success we've had," Mr Deeg told Oly. "This will allow flexibility for us as a committee and will empower us to make decisions without needing to seek DFES approval." Mr Deeg further explained that the firefighters will now wear their own branded uniforms in order to continue producing a calendar that raises money with DFES' support.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We know how important it is to be inspired by both big businesses and individuals, which is why we are excited to present Talking Leaders, a bi-monthly initiative from the AHDB which will see a series of inspirational speakers share their life experiences and deliver impactful stories to the AgriLeader community. In our April broadcast, we have joining us Sir John Jones – discussing “Preparing yourself for a world that doesn't yet exist”. Knighted in 2003 for his services to education, Sir John worked most of his professional life in challenging schools across the North West of England, his last post being the head-teacher of a large secondary school in Merseyside. His achievements and reputation for straight talking, leadership and creativity led him to be invited onto various organizations, panels and think tanks including the National College for School Leadership, the DfES' Leadership Development Unit, the Teacher Development Agency's National Remodelling Unit and visiting posts with both Manchester and Liverpool Universities. Sir John retains a very down to earth approach to education, believing it to be about social change, never just about ticking boxes or meeting targets. Covering an impressive range of educational issues from leadership and inclusion to organizational development and ‘futures thinking', Sir John is guaranteed to give all those who come into contact with him food for thought, practical ideas that will make a difference and a genuine and moving sense of awe at the power teachers have to change young lives.

Our fire service plays a vital role to our lifestyle in WA, especially when it comes to bushfires and managing other disasters throughout our state. DFES's Education and Heritage Centre have recently put a book together looking at the past 120 years of the WA Fire Service with a focus on the Perth Fire Station. The station housed hundreds of Perth firemen and staff starting in January 1901, and DFES historian Ron Harley joined us to talk about it's impact and it's lasting legacy to the WA Fire Service. Volunteer bushfire officers and regional shires in WA are concerned the threat of jail or large fines under new West Australian workplace legislation could see fewer people volunteering to fight fires in rural areas this summer. The WA Government's Work Health and Safety Bill — which introduces industrial manslaughter as a crime — passed through parliament in November last year. It is expected to come into operation in January next year. Regional shire staff, farmers and volunteer fire coordinators have flagged concerns the new workplace rules of the act could make them liable as individuals for large fines or jail time if someone is hurt or injured while volunteer fire fighting in a regional area. Matt Holland is the Acting District Officer for Carnarvon's DFES branch. Department of Fire and Emergency Services. He's recently back from spending four weeks fighting bushfires in British Colombia in Canada.

A bushfire raging in Perth's east is threatening lives and property, according to an urgent warning issued by the state's emergency authorities. The Wooroloo blaze an hour to the city's east continues to burn, with an “act immediately to survive” directive issued for more than a dozen areas, while some residents have been told “it's too late to leave and leaving now would be deadly”.There are reports up to 20 houses have already been lost.An emergency warning is in place for The Vines, Bailup, Ellenbrook, Gidgegannup, Milledon, Walyunga National Park, Upper Swan, Aveley, Wundowie, Red Hill, Belhus, Baskerville, Herne Hill, Bullsbrook, Wooroloo and Brigadoon.Residents in surrounding areas have been told to be on alert by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, with continued unpredictable weather creating a risk to suburbs.“You need to shelter in your home in a room away from the fire front and make sure you can easily escape,” the warning states.“You must shelter before the fire arrives, as the extreme heat will kill you well before the flames reach you.“If your home catches on fire and the conditions inside become unbearable, you need to get out and go to an area that has already been burnt.”More than 250 firefighters fought the blaze overnight as hot and windy conditions lashed the area, with DFES spokesman Superintendent Peter Sutton saying the crews have braved “erratic fire behaviour”, according to The West.“We have a number of properties lost. Our rapid damage assessment team is working on that. But there is no known loss of life,” he said.“The perimeter of the fire is around 60km, so it is very large and the fire has spotted 3.2km from the head of the fire and crossed the river.”Inspector Sutton said houses in Avon Bridge Estate and Shady Hills were under “imminent threat”, revealing crews had little success overnight, but there were no reports of injuries. The Wooroloo fire is part of the Perth metropolitan area region plunged into a five-day lockdown due to the hotel quarantine coronavirus scare revealed on Sunday. The DFES has told anyone who is forced to break the strict lockdown to avoid a fire threat to wear a face mask and adhere to social distancing measures.

I'm going to run you through the pay rates for all the fire services around Australia or most of them, to give you an idea of what you're going to get paid as a firefighter. Then I'm going to do an average so that I answers that question broadly, but I'll go as deep as possible as I can on the data that we've got on the sheet behind it. I'll also put the document up so you can download it if you want all in one spot. I'll go through it all so it's nice and easy to look at the service that you're applying to and figure out how much you're going to get paid. These figures are up to date as of, most of them, 2007/ 2008. There's after those we could possibly get them at this point in time. So each year I'll try and update this but this is how we're going to do it for now.So QFES, a recruit firefighter is currently getting 2555 bucks, that's 89 a fortnight. So times that by 26 and you get yearly wage. And the classification firefighter 2651 should match out the gates. So that's per fortnight. SAMFS pay rate as of 2004 down through to 2017 is as written in this document here. So you'll have to download that one to get that. DFES or WA Fire Service pay rate as of 2006 down, so these ones will be old but you'll get an indicative idea. So trainee firefighter 69,000 per year which is probably the highest in the country I reckon, just off the top of my head. So 70 grand a year as a trainee. Goes up to 76 when you stop being a trainee, so a fifth class firefighter. First class firefighters are known to earn to a grand which is pretty good. Semi-firefighter, 95. Station officer, 107. SO, 211. Area officer, 121. Right up there, Chief Superintendent at 150 grand. So that gives you a really good idea across the board of where you're going to start. I'd say their starting wage is probably a higher one in the country. So you can earn anywhere from sort of 60 grand to 150 in the fire service as a base rate. The next one is the pay rate for Fire Rescue New South Wales as of February 2017. So a recruit firefighter weekly rate of pay from the 16th of Feb will be 1207 bucks a week. So times that by 52 and you get the idea. Right up to the inspector and he's getting 2300 a week. So when you're a qualified firefighter it goes up to 1500 with Fire and Rescue New South Wales. Big pay rate, so these are just the firefighter levels. I can give you an idea of the other level. So a recruit firefighter is earning 1000 bucks a week. So 52 grand a year. So a little bit less than Western Australia pay rate which is 70, so 20,000 less as a recruit. Then you go on to station and it bumps up to 400 bucks extra a week which probably brings you a little bit closer, right up a qualified firefighter at 1550 which is the same as New South Wales essentially. Then ACT Fire and Rescue pay rates, that's another download. I can set up the links there for you, you just have to read that one yourself all in one spot at least. Tasmanian Fire Service pay rate. Trainee firefighter, this is as of 2010 so you can imagine this has gone up significantly, but 41 grand as a trainee. First class firefighter, 55. So I would say this is probably more in line with Vic anyway. That is a pretty old thing but that's all we could get off their website. ARFF pay rates as of 2007. Let's say you start as a recruit, what's a recruit getting? 35 grand. That's not great, that's what it is. Trainee firefighter level one, 61 grand. So it increases significantly once you sought of jump on board as a working firefighter. So then leading firefighters 87 which is pretty much in the mix. Then we've got a SSO and SO, so substation officer, that's the difference there. So, SO is actually a higher rank around 100 grand and the controls are 110. So slightly less than average what they have but all the same not too bad. Northern Territory, all of PFES, you're going to start off on 64 grand as a recruit. It goes up to 67 and then your classes are between 70 grand and 82 as a firefighter. Then you get standing and leading around the 90 grand mark. Station officers is about 100 and senior station officer 107. So slightly below average I reckon just looking at it. But that's the general gist of firefighter wages or firefighter salary for the different services around the country. So if you looked at an average of, I reckon, on the safe side sort of starting around the 50-ish, 55 grand mark as a recruit and then once you qualify looking at 70, 75 grand. So to give you a broad idea hopefully this has been helpful. I'm Brant Clayton this is Firerecruitmentaustralia.com.
